Dear Parents,
Although I am a professional hockey player, I am also a Dad to three school-aged boys! I find that reading to my kids is just as fun as shooting a puck into the net and am excited to announce that your child’s first grade classroom will be participating in the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Score With Reading program. The program will run October 15-December 15, 2012 and encourages your first grader to read at least 20 minutes per day and keep “score” of minutes read. The program motivates students to become All-Star
readers with reading milestones and the ability to win prizes!
Students who read 20 minutes a day for 20 days (400 total minutes) by the end of the program will earn a FREE ThunderBug’s Kids Club
membership and ThunderBug sticker. Students who read 20 minutes a day for 40 days (800 total minutes) by the end of the program will also earn a FREE ticket voucher to an upcoming Tampa Bay
Lightning game. All classrooms that go above and beyond the goal of 800 minutes per student will be entered to win a classroom
visit by ThunderBug or another Lightning celebrity.
PARENT/GUARDIAN STEPS FOR SUCCESS
MOTIVATE: Encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes per day and your child will be on his or her way to “Scoring With Reading!” Although the goal is to encourage daily reading, your child can certainly read more or less each day to reach the minute milestones.
KEEP SCORE: Don’t forget to initial the Reading Scorecard every time your child reads or reads along with you and remind your child to turn in the scorecard to his or her teacher each week.
HAVE FUN: This program is meant to make reading fun for your child, but it can be fun for you too! Read along online with Lightning “celebrities” on TampaBayLightning.com, visit a local library for a “Story Time” or pull out a book before bed instead of turning on the TV!
