you will complete a rigorous required curriculum that emphasizes both “learning” and “doing.” you will apply your knowledge by researching issues, negotiating and drafting legal documents, presenting oral arguments, participating in mock trials, and working closely with practicing attorneys.

With this solid foundation, you may then customize the balance of your legal education. you may choose to focus your elective courses on a particular field, pursue a dual degree, study abroad, serve on a journal, or intern for a judge or government agency. regardless of your chosen path, the hallmarks of a Stetson legal education remain the same:

• A nationally ranked program of skills training .

• Incredible opportunities for professional experience through clinics, internships and advocacy competitions .

• A rich and diversified intellectual life that includes regular opportunities to interact with distinguished scholars, practitioners, government officials and judges .

• A commitment to professionalism and public service — which also integrates students into the legal system at an early stage in their career .

• And a talented, accessible faculty who care about your success .

I enjoyed the first-hand legal experiences that I gained while at Stetson . Stetson provides numerous opportunities for students interested in litigation or advocacy of any kind to hone those skills . Stetson has given us an edge that many students at other law schools will not have once they begin their legal careers .

Effective advocacy is one of a successful lawyer’s most important skills — regardless of practice area — and Stetson’s commitment to teaching advocacy is unmatched. our lawyers and student-advocates excel in the classroom, in the courtroom, and in champion performances on our nationally and internationally lauded advocacy teams. our professors have authored several leading books in advocacy, and our campuses feature seven courtrooms for experiential learning. Breathtaking architecture frames contemporary classrooms, courtrooms and legal research facilities.

Few places in the world can compete with Stetson’s main law campus as an idyllic environment for the study of law. inside the walls of this former 1920s resort in Gulfport/St. petersburg, you’ll find classrooms and courtrooms equipped with sophisticated audio-visual technology. Stetson’s award-winning law library attracts legal scholars from around the world with its comprehensive digital and print collections, not to mention its comfortable study areas.

The Tampa law Center, located at the entrance to downtown Tampa along the Hillsborough river, shares its Wm. reece Smith Jr. Courtroom and satellite law library with Florida’s Second district Court of appeal.

Stetson’s courtrooms feature the latest design and technology, including electronic evidence displays, cameras, plasma screens, microphones and speakers for observing court participants and jury deliberations. The Eleazer Courtroom serves as a national model for access to the elderly, and the two jury rooms of the Wm. reece Smith Jr. Courtroom provide a unique laboratory for comparing the influence of demographic factors on juries. High-speed wireless internet access is available throughout both campuses, and power/network connections are available at most classroom seats.

With about 45 registered student organizations, leadership opportunities abound on campus. you can earn a leadership certificate upon graduation by attending 10 hours of workshops through a program that won the aBa’s prestigious E. Smythe Gambrell professionalism award.

a monthly cultural event series allows you to attend concerts, plays and other community activities, and our active intramural program includes team sports, competitions and exercise classes. a spacious fitness center and temperature-controlled pool are located on the Gulfport campus, which also is a short distance from several public beaches, bike trails and community dog parks.

an exciting array of attractions, beaches and activities are waiting just around the corner.

The active yet relaxing Florida lifestyle is an ideal counterpoint to the rigors of academic study. as part of the Tampa Bay metropolitan area, Stetson offers you access to one of Florida’s most vibrant business and legal communities, and positions you in a thriving cultural center with numerous environmental and international opportunities.

The St. petersburg/Gulfport area boasts magnificent beaches, palm-lined boulevards and sunshine throughout the year. relax to live music at one of the many restaurants and clubs on the beach or downtown. refine your tennis stroke or golf swing. attend a spring training game. or spend a day on cultural pursuits at the Florida international or Salvador dali museums.

Tampa offers Busch Gardens theme park and animal preserve, the Florida aquarium, and the nightlife of historic ybor City and Channelside. The Tampa Bay area also is rich in parks, biking paths, playing fields, fishing piers, boating, shopping, marinas and golf courses. The temperate climate allows you to enjoy these activities year round.

Tampa Bay is home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay lightning. The 2008 american league Champion Tampa Bay rays play just five miles away from Stetson’s Gulfport campus, and the 2012 republican National Convention will be held in Tampa.

I have heard that other law schools can be very cutthroat . That is not the case here . We are one community, helping each other grow professionally every day .

Applying to Stetson

The College of Law admits new full- and part-time students each fall. As a prerequisite to enrollment, applicants are required to have earned a baccalaureate degree from a college or university that is accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. A final, official transcript evidencing conferral of the degree must be submitted before enrolling.

While no particular major will ensure success in law school, a solid foundation in the liberal arts and/or sciences with substantive writing assignments is recommended. The College of Law will review each applicant’s transcript to determine whether the applicant has taken a mix of classes that demonstrate his or her ability to read and comprehend rapidly and accurately, to think precisely and logically, and to communicate clearly and correctly.

The Faculty Committee on Admissions and Entering Awards begins reviewing completed applications in late fall. Although applications are accepted until the deadline, we highly recommend that you submit your application early. The deadlines for completed applications are March 15 for new student applications and July 1 for transfer students.

All applicants are required to take the Law School Admission Test and register with LSAC’s Credential Assembly Service. LSAT scores are valid for admission purposes five years from the test date. Applicants may take the February LSAT. Stetson uses the highest LSAT score for admission. LSAT and Credential Assembly Service registration and information materials may be obtained from LSAC at www .lsac .org or 215-968-1001.

For more information on the application process, including application instructions and other requirements, please visit www .law .stetson .edu .

First-Year Student ScholarshipsAll students are automatically considered for merit and diversity scholarships upon applying to Stetson. About 20–25 percent of incoming students receive scholarships. A separate application is not required for either type of scholarship, and award notifications may arrive with the offer of admission or shortly thereafter.

Merit scholarships are awarded based on the applicant’s cumulative undergraduate GPA, highest LSAT score and other factors. Scholarship levels range from partial tuition to full tuition plus stipend.

Diversity scholarships are offered based on personal attributes or experiences that contribute to a diverse student body. In your personal statement, you may address issues such as success in overcoming adversity and economic or social disadvantage; geographic background; race or ethnicity; age; sexual orientation; first generation in a family to attend college; or any other experience you feel would add to the law school experience.

Stetson participates in the Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program, offering tuition assistance to three student veterans or eligible dependents.

Other scholarships from sources outside Stetson are listed online at www .law .stetson .edu/finaid.

Assistance for Continuing Students

Several programs provide financial assistance to students who have completed their first year at Stetson, including scholarships based on leadership, service, need and merit. Announcements for these scholarships are communicated to students online and via e-mail.

Public Service Scholarships are also available, including a full-tuition scholarship for a rising third-year student with history of public service work who plans to continue that path for three years after graduation.

Teaching assistantships and faculty research assistantships are available on a competitive basis to upper-level students who have a strong academic record and an interest in scholarly research and writing. Teaching assistants support faculty teaching (but do not teach courses themselves), and research assistants support professors with books, law review articles and other projects.

Federal Financial AidStudents seeking any type of federal financial aid must annually submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is available on January 1 of each year and can be completed online at fafsa .ed .gov. Student loans for entering students are processed through the federal Direct Loan program.

I selected Stetson because it seems to focus on the practical side of law . I don’t want to come out of law school with nothing more than a knowledge of theory . I’ve learned in the military that practical working knowledge is necessary to succeed in life, and Stetson’s focus on advocacy and research and writing seems to support this goal .

Federal Stafford Loans are available to eligible law students who complete the FAFSA. You may qualify for up to $8,500 in subsidized loans and $12,000 in unsubsidized loans every two semesters. The federal government pays the interest on subsidized funds while you are in school and during the grace period, while the interest accrues on unsubsidized loans. The interest rate for these loans is fixed at 6.8 percent. An origination fee of .5 percent is deducted from the proceeds of the loan. There is a six-month grace period after graduation or withdrawal before repayment begins.

Federal Graduate PLUS Loans are available to eligible law students based on credit. The interest rate is fixed at 7.9 percent in the Direct Loan program. An origination fee of 2.5 percent is deducted from the proceeds of the loan, and interest accrues during law school. Repayment begins immediately upon graduation; however, deferment and forbearance options are available upon request.

Living ExpensesLiving expense budget projections based on average on- and off-campus living arrangements are available online at www .law .stetson .edu/finaid.

Students who complete the FAFSA will be offered a financial aid award package to cover the full cost of attendance (tuition, fees and estimated living expenses), although many students choose not to accept the full amount of loan aid offered. Students should reduce expenses wherever possible and are encouraged to speak with a Financial Aid Counselor if they have questions. Visit www .mymoney .gov for basics about financial education, such as building a budget or managing debt.

All students are required to carry a minimum level of health insurance. An annual insurance fee ($880 for 2010–2011) will be charged if the student does not qualify for a waiver based on existing coverage.
