Siyabonga Warren Maphamela (29) from Zonkizizwe Zone 4 is the most recent victim; he was poisoned and robbed of his hard earned cash, groceries, bank cards and identity documents at Chis Hani Crossing Mall. Maphamela said he went to the mall to buy groceries and, when he had finished his shopping and was on his way to take a local taxi to Zonkizizwe, he was approached by an unknown man who offered to help him carry his shopping bags and get a taxi. He took him to a black Toyota Tazz in the parking lot and left. “The driver of the Tazz said he was selling colddrinks. I bought one can of colddrink, which was sealed, and started drinking it inside the car. The driver drove off, out of the mall and I was feeling dizzy and started to black out. I don’t know what happened, but l woke up the following day in a hospital bed with tubes all over my body at Natalspruit Hospital,” said Maphamela. He said he lost groceries to the value of R700, the R1 800 which was inside his wallet, his bank cards, his cellphone and his identity documents. “The paramedics said they found me lying next to the mall unconscious and took me to the hospital. The doctor told me that I was poisoned,” said Maphamela. Captain Piet Rossouw, Communications Officer of Vosloorus Police Station, said a case of robbery has been opened. He said there are many incidents of poisoning, mostly targeted at truck- drivers during hijacking incidents. “The community should come forward with information. We believe that there are many people who have been victims, so identity kits of perpetrators can be sketched for easy identification,” said Rossouw. February is the month of love. As l pass by all the shops, peering through the windows, I see Valentine’s gifts and decorations on display and many people from different age groups holding or buying those gifts. This shows that people still love and care for one another. We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day this Saturday and some people are anxious, as they are not sure whether they will receive presents; while others are excited and optimistic that they will be receive something from their loved one. I believe that Valentine’s Day is not only for couples, but for anyone

that you c a r e

about and need to express your affection to.

It could be a friend, family member or relative. People should not wait to receive presents, but should practise being the fi rst one to hand out gifts. As part of celebrating the love month, the City of Ekurhuleni is hosting the High Schools debate fi nals at Alberton Civic Centre today. This is quite interesting, as learners are debating on issues that are linked to love and relationships such as HIV/Aids and Sexually Transmitted Infections. Learners, many of whom are considered to be sexually active, will help to provide solutions on how to fi ght HIV/AIDS.Happy Valentine’s Day, enjoy and cheers for now.

Tshepo Moloi (18), who sustained a mandibular fracture and Ntokozo Mabuya (12), who suffered a femur fracture, were among the six pupils

who were critically injured when the two vehicles collided. The Mayor wished the learners a speedy recovery and encouraged them to focus on getting well in order to return to school. She said Katleho’s mother (35) is a Lesotho national. “She left her son when he was 13 months old and did not inform us where she was heading. We have already contacted her family in Lesotho, but they also do not know her whereabouts. We want

his mother to come back so that we can apply for the child’s birth certificate under his father’s surname. We also want to register the child under our policies and are unable to do so, due to the fact that he does not have a birth certificate.”Anyone who has seen Tohlang’s mother can contact Absolom Mvakali, the child’s father, on: 072 428 5263 \011 906 5462 or visit the Mvakali family on stand number 3783 Ngcobo Street, Rockville Section, Vosloorus.

A 36-year-old male suspect was recently arrested for providing fraudulent documents while applying for a loan at a bank known to this newspaper in Vosloorus Crossing Mall.Captain Mega Ndobe, spokesperson for Katlehong Police Station, said it was alleged that the suspect went inside the bank to apply for a loan. He handed the bank consultant an identity document book and a bank statement. Consultants asked the suspect how much he wanted to borrow. The suspect did not confirm the exact

amount, but stated that any amount that he qualified for would be welcome. They gave him a form to fill in while the bank consultant continued to verify his documents. The bank consultant then discovered that his documents were fraudulent and alerted the police. “The suspect was finally arrested by the police for fraud. The investigation revealed that the bank statement issued to the bank consultant was fraudulent. We are investigating whether the identity document belongs to someone else,” concluded Captain Ndobe. The suspect will appear in Palm Ridge Court on charges of fraud.

Sakhumzi Mtabane (35) was recently handed down four life sentences at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court for raping an 11-year-old girl. The rape incident took place two years ago in an open field in Mayilula section, Vosloorus. Katlehong Police Station spokesperson Captain Mega Ndobe said, “The suspect came across the victim, who was walking in the open field with her friend. According

to our report, the suspect scared away a friend of the girl and grabbed his victim before raping her continuously without any protection.” According to police reports, they managed to arrest the culprit a few metres away from the rape scene. Captain Mega Ndobe applauded the great work done by the investigating officer Constable Ntombi Mdladlamba. “She made it possible for the the case to be well investigated and for the suspect to get appropriate sentencing,” concluded Captain Ndobe.

The Vosloorus Cluster athletics team will bring a large number of athletes to battle it out for a place in the Greater Boksburg Town team. According to Vosloorus Sports Coordinator John Makeke, they had a total of 20 primary schools that competed for a place in the Vosloorus Cluster Team. “A total of 10 primary schools were competing for a place in the Vosloorus team on 3 February. Another 10 primary schools from Vosloorus also competed for a place on 5 February and both trials were held at Germiston Stadium,” said Makeke. He said they have a total of 160 athletes which consist of a cluster 1 and 2 team and a cluster 3 and 4 team. Makeke said on 20 February they will be competing at Germiston Stadium against schools from Boksburg. “There are only 100 places up for grabs in the Greater Boksburg Team for top performing athletes. They will represent the Greater Boksburg Team in the cluster championship against Greater Alberton and Greater Germiston on 25 February. The district championships will be held at Germiston Stadium,” said Makeke. He said the Greater Boksburg team is not yet ready to give up their title and will defend it again. “Athletes are working hard on training in an endeavour to make it to the top hundred list. Their athletic commitment presents a huge challenge to the selection committee officials,” concluded Makeke.
