Miss Earth South Africa (MESA) has received many accolades, proving the leadership programme has a seed of success and has bloomed into a coveted brand with many flowers blossoming out of the programme. This year it was the exquisite Ashanti Mbanga, the 2013 Miss Earth SA. However, last Wednesday must have been the sweetest accolade ever, with a South African-bred rose named after MESA - the Miss Earth South Africa rose.The pure white rose is bred by Ludwig Taschner and was presented to Mbanga at his Pretoria farm. He chose it for Miss Earth because of it’s elegant, beautifully shaped blooms, intense fragrance and strong growth, all ideal attributes of a sought-after garden rose and worthy of a beauty queen. The rose has immaculate blooms with a soft velvet sheen. The bush is neat and compact, growing to head height and is always covered in blooms that are suitable for cutting for the vase. This year the Miss Earth South Africa pledged to “Make Every Day an Earth Day” and this launch was seen as a logical progression of the ethos of beautifying each day and ensuring that each day is lived in harmony and balance with the environment. “Greening our immediate environment is part of the journey of treading lightly, from recycle bins to responsible consumerism, and now we are able to add the gorgeous Ludwig’s Miss Earth Rose to that,” said Ella Bella, MESA’s Educational Programme Director.

Everyone dressed in pink and the day was filled with a fun walk, a balloon ceremony, dance shows, dog shows, jail bail and lots of awareness and fundraising for CANSA. “There was an overwhelming turnout and it is definitely going to be an annual CANSA fundraising event,” Toni Mackrell said.

THE PINK FAMILY: A family went all out wearing pink bow-ties in support of the Rietvlei CANSA fundraising walk and fun day.

I think I should take a little break from the rants of my head voice and share with you some of the comments received in response to last week’s column. But before I do that, as a responsible communicator I feel it is important for me to encourage you to have your say on the Transport Laws and related Matters Amendment Act (3/2013), which was in the Gazette last Wednesday. Thank you for good, fundamental thoughts in a well written article under the heading ‘Do not look where you fell, but where you slipped’ – 8 October. To my mind we in South Africa have already fallen and slipped in that we now only have a quasi-democracy, something looking like the real thing on surface but being far from it. Is this so-called democracy not starting to show tentacles of a dark, unwanted political monster or political ideology?I have my reasons for thinking this way, most of them are explained in your abovementioned writings. Look again at the Gupta saga for instance. Do we not see elements of ‘bugger you, I will do what I want to’ or ‘why should we explain to the public’? Then, like in the past under previous governments, somebody will be made the scapegoat or donkey. This person or group of persons will eventually, as it is ‘fashion’ nowadays, go to court, entice all and sundry in a long and drawn out legal battle – trying to say to the rest of the world ‘I did nothing wrong’!Some or other time in the process the wrongdoing will naturally land up in file 13. It is so predictable. It mystifies me further to almost daily hear and see how our courts are being misused to sort out one mess after the other made by our elected leaders. Then comes a thought that one of the biggest drawbacks of a democracy is simply the fact that the people’s voice can only be heard at elections. Think about it. Does this not coerce many of the bugging things we are talking about?Should we not become pro-active as per the saying of JF Kennedy? Never mind the roof that needs to be repaired before the rain – in many ways in our beautiful country there are not yet walls or basic services. The checks and balances to prevent renegade-like actions are not in place.

I’m bowled over by your comment. My thoughts especially froze when you pointed out the issue of the non-existent walls. I don’t know if you are at all religious, but you strike me as a well-read individual and your contribution reminded me of a passage in the bible (Nehemiah 1-3) where Nehemiah, who is in exile, receives a negative report about his homeland. The story takes a few turns but ultimately he makes a decision to leave his high position in a foreign land to go back home and rebuild the walls... We have a lot of South Africans living abroad; my question which stems from this parallel biblical example is... Could this be the time for our countrymen to head back home? You pointed it out... Drug abuse is a well-known social hazard causing different types of social ills, including crime, abuse, rape, assault, domestic violence, family disorientation, depression, school drop-outs and suicide. As a result a group of women known as Women of Word (W.o.W) in Rosettenville embarked on a long march in support of zero tolerance to drugs on 10 october.The march commenced from La Rochelle to Westgate Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg. The mastermind behind the initiative, Mertel Moody said, “Drug abuse is becoming rifer, especially in the young children. However,

minors can be admitted in rehabilitation centres whereas with those over 18 years old it is a cumbersome process as they have reached the age of consent. Therefore, one of the objectives of the march is to submit a proposed memorandum to the Chief Magistrate so that we can be granted an order for children who are 18 years old and above. At least with such an order in place, they can be sent to rehabilitation institutions without seeking their permission.”Moody emphasised that most children between the ages of 18 and 25 still live with their parents and when they do drugs it causes chaos in the home. In most cases, they steal and even become violent towards their siblings and parents. One of the community activists, Mandy

Fitzgerald said, “Parents should be alert and not allow this to happen anymore. They should get involved in such programmes because almost every home is affected. When a family is affected, the community suffers and it spreads countrywide. We have a dream for a drug free South Africa.” Fitzgerald also added that through this initiative they hope to get exposure so that companies and organisations can support them by providing the funds needed to re-open closed rehab centres, as well as establishment of new institutions.Conclusively, Fitzgerald noted that assistance from school authorities would be greatly appreciated together with committed visibility from SAPS. She also acknowledged the support from the police officials on their walk.

The day after Lindon Wagner (23) set Kirsty Theologo and Bronwyn Grammer alight he went to a club, took Kat and Acid and partied the whole night through. He still visited his gran with his mother that Sunday.This is what the South Gauteng High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court, heard last week when Wagner testified along with co-accused Courtney Daniels. Daniels testified first and described her co-accuseds as wanna-be gangsters who never took life seriously.The 18-year-old testified that she knew about the ritual, which to her understanding was the calling up of spirits, but denies knowing about selling of souls and the sacrifice. When asked whose spirit she was going to call up, Daniels replied “my father”, and started crying. Daniels denied putting brake fluid in Grammer and Theologo’s drinks.When questioned why she didn’t run away or tell her mom about what had happened, she explained she was scared that the boys would come after her.In cross-examination, the state’s prosecutor Carina Coetzee questioned many of the things Daniels stated and in the end put it to Daniels that she was jealous of Theologo and decided

to sacrifice her with Lester Moody, Jeremy King, Robin Harwood, Harvey Isha and Lindon Wagner. Daniels denied this. Moody and King pleaded guilty and are serving their sentence.In Wagner’s testimony he admitted to strangling Grammer, hitting Theologo with a rock on her head and to setting both girls alight. “I picked up a rock and dropped it on her head. The rock bounced and I picked it up again and hit her twice again.”Wagner, who is a father, said when Moody said “It’s time” a strange feeling was roused inside of him. “It is a feeling I can’t explain, like a rush. My body got hot and I went deaf. I had no thoughts and no feelings. I knew what I was doing and how everything was going to happen, but don’t know how I knew.” This is when he proceeded to attack the girls.Wagner stated that it was Moody who started rapping about taking over the world and being the beast when they had smoked dagga. “Lester read this verse at home (Revelation 13:18) and wanted to fulfil it. He said he calculated his name and it came to be triple 6.” It was also revealed that all boys were regular drug users.Wagner admitted he wanted to sell his soul to receive the gift of power. The court also

Glenvista High - what the community thinks?Last week tame TIMES asked their readers if they thought what was happening at Glenvista High should be made public knowledge. These are the comments received:“Yes it is a public school, funded by our taxes” - Mike O’Grady“As a parent whose children are all out of school I still feel that the answer should be yes, it should be made public. The reason is that this is a major problem and as Glenvista High is a feeder school to so many areas - parents need to know what kind of action will be taken now and in the future should this happen again. With regard to the comment made about the drugs, not only is it a problem in Glenvista but all schools. I don’t believe that enough is being done about the problem. Drugs are easily available anywhere including school grounds. Parents need to be worried.” - Anonymous“The recent matter regarding Glenvista High School should be made public knowledge. I regard your question as a timely one as the culmination of many past scandals rocketing the school testifies to the fact that firm intervention by the Department of Education to resolve the school’s issues was severely lacking. I believe that parents are responsible for their children’s upbringing, because and so, if parents do not strengthen and unify their households, the effects of

their children’s behaviour will simply be felt at school. I believe that parents should receive counselling regarding their children’s unruly conduct at school and that their children should be disciplined to the proper degree by the school or the authorities. However, nothing has been said about the school or the teachers themselves. My concern is: why did the pupil’s teacher take hold of the pupil’s schoolbag and why did the teacher willingly forgive all pupils involved shortly thereafter? Although the school’s governing body praised the teacher’s efforts for pursuing peace, this reaction may likely be a show to cover up any wrongdoing on the part of the teacher. Why so? Because, I believe it to be an act of provocation on the part of the teacher for having personally taken hold of the pupil’s schoolbag - schoolbags are pupil’s personal belongings. Instead, pupils should be instructed by teachers to take charge over their schoolbags when necessary, in compliance of a school rule or to fulfil a vital obligation. Although I strongly condemn the pupil’s malicious act of retaliation to the teacher’s action, I hold the teacher largely accountable for having incited the incident in the first place - A very concerned parent.

A woman (40) was rescued from the boot of her own vehicle, a GWM C10, after a house robbery occurred at her home in Randfontein on 8 October. The suspects locked her in the boot and fled. Three suspects were arrested by Mondeor SAPS for kidnapping and possession of a stolen vehicle when their escape plan was halted by the great work of the JHB Flying Squad, a SAPS chopper and JMPD.The woman’s vehicle tracker went off and a chase commenced with the suspects driving through Brixton. When the suspects took the Aspen Hills off-ramp from Kliprivier Drive, they were met with gunshots. The three suspects got out of the vehicle with firearms and tried to flee. One suspect was shot and all three were caught.The woman was released and taken to Netcare Mulbarton Hospital. “She was very shaken up and disorientated when she got out of the boot. She has small abrasions on her body and had bite marks on her leg and arm, as well as a cut underneath her eye and marks on her neck. She also complained that her kidneys were sore,” Michelle Pelser from Mondeor SAPS CPF said.

Pelser said a bottle of whiskey was found, along with cell phones and a wallet. Firearms were also apprehended. Randfontein SAPS is handling the case of house robbery.Aspen Hills Home Owners Association has commended the SAPS for their sterling effort. Below is a letter that was sent to all Aspen Hills residents: “The South African Police assisted by Johannesburg Metro Police and a Netstar helicopter apprehended three suspects outside the entrance to our estate this evening, and in so doing rescued a female hostage. The lady was held up in her home in Randfontein and bundled into the boot of her car and driven around for three hours. The vehicle was forced to a stop outside Aspen on the north bound off-ramp from Kliprivier Drive when the suspects fled on foot. They were swiftly apprehended. Fortunately the victim was not injured other than some bruising and being traumatised. Estate management and D&D Security provided support to the police and victim.”

tame TIMES have received an overwhelming response from pensioners who have applied for the rebate from City of Joburg but have had no response to their applications. Below are only some of the responses:

-To date I am a disgruntled and frustrated pensioner. I have not yet received my September accounts and we are way in October already. Are you able to assist in finding out whether the rebate has been granted? My application was handed in on 21 July 2013. - HJ

- I would like to say that myself and four others also applied beginning July, we posted our applications registered post, as a postal address was also given. It is now three months later with no sign of a rebate. - Another frustrated pensioner.

- I applied for the pensioner’s rebate before the deadline in 2012. I delivered the application together with applicable documents to the Springfield walk-in centre. I handed the documentation to one of the consultants who checked that everything was in order. Since then I have heard nothing. When I applied, I expected a 50% rebate but have subsequently learnt that, at 75 years of age and with my property’s rateable value less than R2 000 000, I am now eligible for the full rebate. Can the Joburg Connect first please

advise when I am going to hear the result of my application. - PJJ

- I think it was about February/March that I lifted the required form from the internet, completed it, had it signed by a commissioner of oaths, a copy of my ID also duly stamped and signed by the same commissioner and handed in the lot at Springfield. No receipt was issued, so I cannot prove my deed. When I asked about it, they said, no, just leave it here and you will hear from us. I wonder if there is anybody at all who has had a positive response so far. - BB

- I am another one of those people who is hopeful that you can help with the rebate situation. At the beginning of August and during September I handed in my forms. - AY

- My wife applied for a rebate on 23 January 2012. We submitted all the correct forms at Eureka House, and were informed that we would be contacted. After some time and not being contacted, we went back to Eureka House only to be told that they were attending to our request. We were given a reference number. Another couple of months went by and we were given another reference number. I contacted Clr Paul Smit who suggested we go to Braamfontien and he would contact the Dep Director explaining our problem. We have been to Braamfontien twice with no joy. I have saved all the correspondence from Clr

Paul Smit, as well all documentation between the council. We make regular trips to Eureka House and are still awaiting an outcome.

-I obtained an application form from the in-ternet as well as the tame TIMES office, this was in June 2013. The form was duly com-pleted and signed and witnessed by a Com-missioner of Oaths, with all relevant certified copies of documents attached as requested. These were delivered during the last week of June to Eureka House. I was informed that the form submitted was incorrect and that the form for pensioners older than 60 years should have been used. After a long delay my submission was accepted and I was as-sured that the submission would be dealt with. By end of August, I made another trip to Eureka House only to be told that they were overloaded by applications and could not tell me whether my application was still in their “back log” or whether it had been processed and sent to Braamfontein’s rates office.

E-tolls fight must go to the ballot boxMmusi Maimane, DA Premier Candidate for Gauteng, writes:

The 9 October Supreme Court of Appeals ruling that e-tolling may go ahead is not the end of the road. If elected Gauteng Premier, I pledge to do everything possible to stop e-tolling in its tracks. Our legal team are currently exploring all options available to us should we win Gauteng in the 2014 elections. The DA contributed R1million to OUTA’s court action because we believed it was important to contest the principle of e-tolling.The fight against tolling is now in the hands of the people of Gauteng. Now we must take the fight to the ballot box in 2014 and vote out the government who brought the burden of e-tolling to South Africans.E-tolling will kill jobs in Gauteng and make it harder for people to make ends meet. The power of the vote is the surest way to stop tolls.The DA has reason to believe that government is misleading the public about the true cost of

e-tolls. According to the Government Gazette on e-toll tariffs published on 9 October, 82.7% of road users (Class A2) will pay a maximum of R100 per month if they are registered as e-tag users.

Using SANRAL’s own schematic on the toll gantries and linking this to the gazetted tariffs to be paid by registered e-tag users during peak periods, the DA has estimated costs on the following routes:• Daveyton to Johannesburg: The user will pass through at least five gantries on a return trip at an approximate cost of R13,92 a day. This equates to R69,60 a week and R278,40 a month. • Alexander to Centurion: The user would pass through at least six gantries at an approximate cost of R17,31 a day. This equates to R69,24 a week and R276,96 a month.• Soweto to Midrand: The user will pass

through at least 11 gantries on a return trip at an approximate cost of R29,64 a day and the minimum threshold of R400 a month.• Tembisa to Germiston: The user will pass through at least four gantries on a return trip at an approximate cost of R14,40 per day. This equates to R72 per week and R288 per month. • Pretoria/Shoshanguve/Mamelodi to Johannesburg: The user will pass through at least 14 gantries on a return trip at an approximate cost of R37,92 per day and the minimum threshold of R400 per month. It is hard to believe that more than 80% of users carrying an e-tag will pay only R100 maximum per month.SANRAL and government continue to deceive South Africans not only about the viability of the e-toll system, but also the expected costs for the users, even those with an e-tag.

“Regeneration”

Zombie movies are all the craze at the moment. The Bible has some zombie stories of its own, believe it or not. Its story is a little more personal however. God says that everyone is born as a type of zombie. This is because no one can know God by his or her own efforts. Anyone who doesn’t know God is pretty much dead – but walking around thinking they’re not. But unlike the movie extermination solutions, God has a better plan. He can make people alive – alive to Him. Consider Titus 3:5: “...he saved us, not because of works done by

us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.”

God saves people by making them alive and renewing their ability to know him. This is what the now stigmatised ‘born again’ statement means – that when a person puts their whole trust in the Lord Jesus they will be made alive. This new life is so radical that it’s called being born again. They are ‘regenerated’.Regeneration is certainly not a word for dead religiosity and boring morals. Nothing can compare to being made alive to God.

On World Post Day (9 October) Christopher Hlekane, CEO of the SA Post Office, announced a set of stamps celebrating the achievements of the local postal industry. The stamps were launched at the Jomapex Stamp Exhibition at Museum Africa in Johannesburg.“The SA Post Office has implemented several projects over the years that significantly contributed to the national infrastructure, thereby improving the lives of South Africa’s citizens,” said Hlekane. The stamps depict five of these projects. The artwork for the stamps was done by Charlotte Olivier. Only 70 000 stamp sheets were printed. The first stamp demonstrates the SA Post Office’s address expansion project. The second stamp represents the SA Post Office hybrid mail and eBusiness solutions. The third stamp represents the Post Office’s investment in the environment.The fourth stamp represents the manner in which Postbank makes financial services accessible to all. Stamp number five illustrates the Post Office’s unique ability to deliver services to the people on behalf of other entities.

Well done to Detective Sgt Chabalala from Booysens SAPS. He attained a 15 year im-prisonment sentence on a suspect. The suspect was sentenced as follows: Count one - murder, 15 years; count 2 - malicious damage to property, 2 years; and count 3 - as-sault, 60 days. It was said that count 2 and 3 will run concurrently with the murder cases, therefore the suspect will spend 15 years in jail.

Four suspects were apprehended in a flat in Turffontein on 2 October by Booys-ens SAPS members W/O Shai, Sgt Ndaba, Cst Mbasa, Cst Mabasa, Cst Mathebe, Cst Ngwenya and Cst Thage and were arrested for fraud.W/O Shai received information about these suspects active in activities of fraud. All the team members got together and planned their bust. The officers approached the flat and were able to apprehend four suspects inside. The suspects were involved in transferring large amounts of money to a fraudulent bank account. The officers found various jewellery, watches and cell phones to the value of R100 000. Five laptops were confiscated as it is be-lieved they were involved in the criminal activi-ties.

Two suspects who were arrested on 14 June 2012 for housebreaking were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on 9 September by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.The incident took place in Colworth Street, Mondeor and it was due to a neighbour’s watchful eye that the two suspects, who are both in twenties, were caught. The case was assigned to C st (f) Malebane for further investigation.

A suspect in his twenties was sentenced to seven years imprisonment on 9 September by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. The investigating officer w as Cst Maluleka.The incident took place on 25 March 2012 in Voster Avenue, Glenanda. The victim was robbed of his cell phone by two males.

Mondeor High School had the privilege of hosting a NASA astronaut on Monday 7 October. Col Ron Garan, who has spent over 178 days in space, over 27 hours of spacewalks, and 2842 orbits of earth, equalling 71 075 867 miles of space travel, visited the school together with good friend Ashwin Willemse and social explorers Tom Huntinford and George Cowie.Ron’s address to students was based on a concept of “Orbital Perspective”, which in essence seeks to remove us from usually negative and prejudiced views. Ron shared of his experiences with the students; one story of their landing back on earth especially had students in awe.“We had a pretty rough landing,” Ron told students, “when our space shuttle eventually came to a halt, I had my head against the

shuttles window and I remember saying to myself – I’m home.” The interesting part of the story is the details, the ship landed in Kazakhstan. “Earth is our home and that’s the essence of Orbital Perspective. As an American, Kazakhstan and earth in general became home, which makes all the political issues irrelevant, hindering progress.”Mondeor students had the once in a lifetime opportunity of having a one-on-one question and answer session, where Ron at times admitted that the level of curiosity far exceeded his expectations. Below are the results:Debate: The English debate team won the district debate and advanced to the 4th round in Gauteng. Drama: The drama department did extremely well. The English junior drama received gold with an achievement of 88% and the English senior drama received gold and a diploma, the highest achievement a drama group can receive, with a percentage of 95%. The Afrikaans drama received gold and got a percentage of 80%. Choir: The choir received a gold award once again. This is the 6th year the choir received gold or higher, having received gold and a diploma in 2009, achieving more than 90%.Art: The art club stole the show at this year’s Eisteddfod with all the art pieces entered

Competition has become fierce with the tame TIMES Jozi South Half Marathon approaching. Now the challenge extends beyond the professional runners, with challenges involving individuals such as Peace Starts founder Cito and Olympic Gold medallist Sizwe Lawrence Ndlovu. Ndlovu has challenged the WonderBoom frontman to see who is the fastest in the 10km race. This sportsman vs entertainer challenge seems to have spread into an industry challenge, as they’re tallying their own troops to participate and join one of the two teams.The 21km and 10km races will start at 07:00 at the Apartheid Museum, go through Soweto and finish in front of Gold Reef City Casino entrance, giving runners a chance to appreciate the greatness of Jozi. The 4km fun run, which takes place in Gold Reef City Theme Park, starts at 7:30 and allows families to spend quality time together. IMPS IS BACK IN SA: Daryl Impey signing a previous article from tame TIMES with Ilze Moore,tame TIMES Bedfordview editor.

The first African born cyclist to be awarded the Tour de France yellow jersey, Daryl Impey, just returned from overseas and tame TIMES amongst many other news stations and papers waited at OR Tambo International Airport on 9 October for Impey. “I have just got back from world champs, despite having crashed twice. I am glad I could win the yellow jersey for South Africa,” said Impey.Impey will be taking part in the Teddy Bear Clinic 94.7 Cycle Challenge with David O’Sullivan from 702, amongst others. “It is always nice to give something back and I am excited to ride with some friends at the back and get to see a different part of a race. It is actually nice to ride for fun for a

change.”“After some of the hard times I have had it is nice to have things go my way for a change. I am glad

to be off now for the rest of the season and am looking forward to spending time with family, especially to introduce my son to them.”

It all started in 1997, when Impey was asked by his father, Tony, to join him and his brother, Grant, on a mountain bike ride. Impey was busy playing soccer at the time but decided to try out mountain biking for the first time. Impey trained hard and raced until 1999. “I got asked to ride at a u/16 tour for Club 100 when I was 15 years old and I believe this was the turning point in my career. I was no longer the big fish, I was in a bigger pond and I had lots to learn. I set a goal to represent SA at the junior world championship in 2002 and managed to secure my place. Going to the worlds and seeing all the Pro’s and seeing how big the setup was in Europe, was everything I

ever wanted. I set my next goal, first turn pro in South Africa, prove yourself and then try make the jump to Europe. Easier said than done.”Impey joined the Australian team Orica GreenEdge only 18 months ago as a domestique but this changed after management saw a rare quality in him and his competitive

spirit that gave them confidence to sign him on for more seasons.

Impey will be racing next in the National Championships in February and in Australia come March and April.
