Helping the hungryThe Rotarians of Bedfordview collect donations of food and other items every month. On Sunday 31 August they were stationed outside the Pick ‘n Pay at Bedford Centre and collected food to make up into parcels for the less privileged and hungry in the area.

Saunders takes the greening crownKlerksdorp resident, Ilze Saunders, was announced as the 2014 Miss Earth South last Thursday at Palazzo Hotel, Montecasino. The down-to-earth beauty said that she is delighted to be afforded the opportunity and cannot wait to continue making a difference. The BA Communications student will take over from former Miss Earth SA, Ashanti Mbanga, who has left big shoes to fill. Mbanga told tame TIMES she will complete her studies in Transport Economics at the University of Johannesburg and is already working with the Gauteng Department of Transport with regard to

implementing the use of bicycles in the city, adding that her reign as Miss Earth SA has forever changed her life. The co-ambassadors accompanying Saunders on her green journey are: Steffani Alexander (first runner-up), Michillay Brown (third runner-up), and Roxanne Watson

(fourth runner-up). Winchester Hills resident, Nita Kandasamy, has made the community of the South very proud by placing in the top 16. She looked absolutely stunning in her pink dress and has made an impact in the communityThe Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, among many other prestigious guests, acknowledged the sustainable difference Miss Earth SA makes. Molewa assured the contestants and stakeholders that Miss Earth SA and its projects will be at the top of the government’s sustainability agenda. “Our abundant resources - productive land, clean water, healthy air, beautiful landscapes, flora, fauna and wildlife - must not only benefit us today, but also our children and grandchildren […]. The potential impacts of climate change undermine our efforts to secure food, water, economic development and human security, including addressing health and poverty issues resulting from the rapid loss of critical biodiversity and habitat destruction. You represent the future of this country: a future we as the South African government and as the Department of Environmental Affairs are actively working for. And in this, we reiterate our support of the Miss Earth South Africa whose goals of community empowerment, women’s advocacy and grassroots participation, so closely align with the government’s own vision.”

GREEN CHANGE AGENTS: Sonwabile Ndamase, Ashanti Mbanga, Roxanne Watson, Edna Molewa, Catherine Constantinides, Ilze Saunders, Steffanie Alexander, Michillay Brown and Yusuf Abramjee.

The City of Ekurhuleni won an award for the cleanest municipality in Gauteng and was given the top prize of R300 000 at the Bontle ke Botho awards ceremony. The event was recently hosted by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development at the Lakes Hotel in Benoni. Ekurhuleni will now represent the Gauteng province at the Greenest Municipality competition which is run by National Department of Environmental Affairs, an award which the City won last year. Lebogang Maile, Gauteng MEC of Agriculture and Rural Development, also awarded the City of Ekurhuleni a Certificate of Recognition for being the first Gauteng municipality to win the national Greenest Municipality Competition last year. “This campaign continues to facilitate community development and empowerment. On both formal and informal education fronts, learners in schools and community members participating in the project gained the necessary environmental skills, knowledge, attitude and values required to ensure that they participate meaningfully in addressing environmental issues that affect them now and in the future,” said Maile.Councillor Vuyelwa Mabena, Member of Mayoral Committee for Environmental Management in Ekurhuleni said, “This project has had a positive impact in many of our communities and schools. It is important that we come up with innovations that will ensure that it is sustained for the next 20 years.”

The City of Johannesburg came second in the competition. The winners of the 2014 Bontle ke Botho awards in the City of Ekurhuleni are as follows: for wards in new projects, ward 95 in Vosloorus took the second position and won R45 000; in the sustainable wards projects, ward 49 in Katlehong took the fourth position and won R15 000; for schools, Kathorus scooped all the awards for the new projects. Abinala Primary School in Vosloorus won the first prize and was awarded R35 000. The second prize was won by Leratadima Primary School in Thokoza and scooped R30 000. The third prize went to Tshabalala Primary School in Katlehong and won R25 000. The fourth prize was won by Umkhathizwe Primary School in Thokoza and was awarded R20 000. The fifty award went to Thulisa Primary School in Katlehong which won R15 000. Bontle Ke Botho is an initiative established by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in 2002. It is aimed at encouraging sustainable environmental practices in communities, schools, wards and at municipal level. Another objective of the programme is to promote environmental actions that take into consideration poverty alleviation and sustainable living practices. Projects are required to address one or more of the five themes which are: water conservation, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable agriculture and greening.

While being transported to Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on 1 September, Radovan Krejcir was in a minor car accident when some of the police vans escorting him collided with each other. This aroused concern among Krejcir’s lawyers about his safety in the vehicle transporting him, as Krejcir had no safety gear on to prevent injury; however, Krejcir walked away with minor head injuries and has been checked by a doctor.Krejcir was scheduled to appear in court on charges of the smuggling of methamphetamine into Australia. He is to stand trial along with five others who were also allegedly involved, one of whom has already pleaded guilty to smuggling drugs. Krejcir will also stand trial on charges of kidnapping and attempted murder.

Last Saturday, protesters dressed up in provocative and skimpy attire for the Zoo Lake Slutwalk, one of many held around the world since the infamous 2011 comment of the Toronto Police, “Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.”Of course victims should not be blamed for the crimes of those who brutalise them – rape is a male problem. Rapists are always responsible for their actions and women or girls should be able to wear miniskirts on taxis or bikini tops in public without being attacked. Even if a man sees a woman walking drunk and naked down the town’s main street at midnight and rapes her, he is still guilty of rape.Unfortunately though, not all the male citizens of our country are men of honour. To avoid being raped, it is wise for women to dress modestly and to take care of their personal safety. Car-owners, to avoid car theft, need to lock their doors and windows when parking

their vehicles. Home-owners, to avoid burglary, need to activate their alarms when going on holiday. Tragically, in South Africa, even babies, children and grandmothers are raped. Rapists commonly break into homes, ransack them and rape any women and girls they find. In the Democratic Republic

of Congo, rape is used as a weapon of war – girls and women are gang-raped, then mutilated. It has been said many times that rape is about

power, but it is also about a lack of dignity; because when the powerful respect the weak, they are safe. The most vulnerable person in society is the powerless individual whose dignity has been stolen. That is why the Slutwalk is a very controversial way of protesting rape, with women voluntarily giving up their own dignity. They could choose to portray themselves as human beings with hearts, souls and minds as well as bodies; but, instead, they attract male sight-seers with all the wrong intentions.

The City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at planting 11 000 trees in its 101 wards. The project began in April at the opening of Motsu Park in Tembisa, and will culminate in an 11-minute challenge on September 13 in celebration of Arbor Day. The aim is to create an urban forest to combat climate change, thus maintaining a healthy environment at no cost. The challenge will require the participation of Ekurhuleni residents from all walks of life. Join the movement by contacting your ward councillor or your area project manager to obtain a tree. Those participating in the challenge will be requested to p l a n t t h e i r

trees at a specific time on September 13, although this is not a prerequisite for

participation. Individuals, organizations, businesses, schools, churches, clubs and everyone else are

invited to take part. C o n t a c t

Not only is September a month of celebrating the birth of new life, after what has been a long and dreary winter; it is also a month in which all South Africans acknowledge and celebrate their heritage. Along with our strong heritage we have so much to be proud of, and this pride is shown in many ways and amongst them is the pride of knowing you are making a difference to the lives of those in need. As a blood donor, you play an important role in saving lives. Your blood donation could save up to three lives, and you may never know when you or one of your loved ones needs a blood transfusion. That is why we urge all donors to become regular donors - with a minimum of four donations a year you can be proud of being part of a nation of doers. As we rapidly draw towards the end of another year, SANBS ask you to commit to donating at least twice over the next four months so as to avoid the shortages we traditionally experience from now until the upcoming holidays and school examinations break. To be a blood donor you need to: -• Be between the ages of 16 and 65 • Weigh more than 50 kilograms• Be in good health• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle• Have eaten a meal recently For more information contact our call centre on 0800 11 9031 or visit our website on www.sanbs.org.za.

CrimeEight injured in

ovErturnEd minibusNetcare 911 paramedics and other services responded to an accident on the N12 near Van Buuren Road off-ramp in Bedfordview on 30 August. When they arrived at the scene they found that a minibus had overturned, resulting in eight people sustaining injuries. The eight patients were transported to hospital for further medical care after receiving treatment on the scene. Exact details of the cause of the accident and the events preceding it will remain the subject of a police investigation.

A thirty-nine-year-old woman tragically lost her life following a pedestrian accident on North Reef Road in Elandsfontein, Germiston last Wednesday.Netcare 911 arrived on the scene to find that the woman had already lost her life during the accident. The driver of the motor vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was transported to hospital for further medical care.Little is as yet known about the cause of the accident. A police investigation is still underway.

With the help of members from the K9 Benoni unit, Primrose police arrested two suspects, aged 27 and 29 years old, for possession of drugs last Wednesday in Oak Avenue. Members of the Benoni K9 unit were doing crime prevention duties in the area when they noticed two suspicious-looking men. They stopped to search them and found drugs in their possession.Primrose SAPS arrested them and brought them to the police station for detention. Primrose SAPS management thanked the K9 unit for their help. The suspects will appear in Germiston Court soon.

Primrose police arrested a 24-year-old man last week for stealing a money-bag of wages on payday. The wages clerk had left the money-bag on the table in her upstairs office, locked the security gate behind her and gone downstairs. After four hours she returned to find the security gate open and the money-bag missing. Since there was no evidence of forced entry, she realised that the suspect had access to a key for the security gate. She then called the security guard, knowing that he had a second key for the security gate and asked him if he knew who took the money. He referred her to someone he believed to be the culprit, who confessed to the theft. The police were called later and the suspect was traced and arrested. He will appear in the Germiston Court soon.

Primrose police arrested a woman recently at Delport informal settlement for dealing in liquor without a licence. They were doing a foot patrol in Delport when they noticed what seemed to be the sign for a tavern on a home which many people were continually entering and leaving with bottles of beer. They approached the place and asked permission to search it. After finding a large amount of beer inside, they asked the owner of the place to show them her liquor licence, but she was unable to produce one. The police arrested her for dealing in liquor without a licence and took her to Primrose SAPS for detention. She has appeared at Germiston Court and the matter has been remanded for trial. Police have promised to continue such operations in informal settlements to reduce the high volume of liquor-related crimes in these areas.

Last Tuesday Primrose police arrested a 30-year-old woman for smashing the window of a shop in Rietfontein Road. The previous Saturday morning the business-owner had arrived to open her shop to find that the front window was broken. Fortunately, however, no one had entered the premises. The suspect, who was arrested for malicious damage to property, will appear in court soon.

The Monday before last, Primrose SAPS arrested a 19-year-old suspect in Elm Street for house-breaking and theft after a couple and their son woke up to find intruders in their home, and caught one after chasing them down the street. The lady of the house was woken by the barking of the family’s dogs and went to investigate. She discovered four men removing items from the lounge, who ran out of the house after realising they had been seen. Hot on their heels, however, were the woman, her husband and their son. They caught one of the suspects and handed him over to the police. Police salute the bravery of the family for apprehending the suspect but appeal to the community to be extra careful when chasing suspects, as some are armed and may put their lives in danger. The community is urged to call the police to help when necessary. The suspect appeared at Germiston Court, and the matter was remanded for plea and trial while the suspect remained in custody.

Proving that just about anything can be used as a weapon, Primrose SAPS made two arrests for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm involving bricks and an iron bar. At Marathon informal settlement on 6 August, a 24-year-old woman struck another woman with a brick after an argument involving the two of them, the assault victim’s husband and allegations about dirty water poured into the victim's yard by the brick-thrower. The victim suffered injuries to her back and the suspect was arrested on1 September. At Makause informal settlement on the same day, an argument caused by borrowed tools led to a scuffle with an iron bar and a brick. When a man who had lent his neighbour tools in 2013 went to retrieve them, the man went into his shack to fetch an iron bar to hit him but fortunately, the tool-owner grabbed it in time. The man then fetched a brick from his shack and struck his neighbour on the upper body, causing injuries. Both suspects appeared at Germiston Court and the matters have been remanded for various reasons. The police have appealed to the community not to take the law into their own hands, but to approach them for help when they have challenges.

Minister urges learners to take maths and science

South Africa needs to quadruple the number of engineering graduates per year, said Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor as she opened the UNESCO Africa Engineering Week at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) last week Monday.Minister Pandor encouraged school learners to study mathematics and science, and to work hard at them.”We have an unfortunate legacy inherited from the former education system of our country, which discouraged black learners from taking mathematics and science for Matric,” said Minister Pandor.“We need to make science, maths and technology-related subjects more visible to the youth, in order to inspire more children and build the number of engineers entering the profession,” she said.In a passionate plea to learners, Minister Pandor said: “Our desperate need is for you, as the future of this country, to take the decision from grade 10 right through to grade 12, to study maths and science at school, and to persevere with these subjects, right up to university. If you stick with this decision, in 20 years’ time our country will be transformed.”For more information, visit www.ecsa.co.za, www.unesco.org or www.dst.gov.za.

Primrose police, accompanied by members of the Crime Prevention Youth Desk, visited Laerskool Die President to address bullying last Tuesday. The school is struggling with the issue of bullying, which is affecting learners as young as six years old and some of the learners are even bullying their educators.

The Youth Desk performed an educational drama for the children and then Sgt Maome spoke to them. He warned the learners that those who end up as serious criminals often start off as bullies and urged them to report bullying to their teachers or parents.

A toast to the then and now

Jeans at work:Ok Or nO way?

By Erika Schwartz Fashion designer & owner of Fashion House & Buyers Lounge.

It is hard trying to figure out how to keep to your company’s casual dress code without adding denims to the mix. Most employees feel that they would be much more comfortable wearing their jeans to work every day, but policies may prohibit this. In some places, only certain types of jeans are acceptable and only on some days of the week, like Fridays. Other workplaces have a more straightforward NO JEANS AT ALL policy.Jeans, however, are all about how you present them and what you pair your neat pair of jeans with. Denim jeans were originally made in blue, but are now available in various colours and styles, making it easier to wear them to work and get away with it.

Most jeans suitable for office wear have four characteristics in common: office jeans are not ripped or scruffy in appearance, they have a uniform dark colour, they are made of good quality denim and they fit you properly - not being too tight and definitely not baggy.Men working in an informal corporate environment can get away with wearing slightly baggier jeans. These jeans come in black or dark blue and are slightly boot-cut, adding a little edgy look for the corporate environment. Stick to solid colours and clean lines - if pants have too many accessories like buttons, zips and bleach marks, they can make the jean look too casual. Stay away from flowery, patterned shirts. Rather match your jeans with a neat striped shirt and blazer. Ladies, avoid run-ins with Human Resources by wearing wider-legged, higher-waisted trouser pants in dark denim with a blouse and blazer. Where men may have a harder time getting away with coloured jeans, women can safely wear them. Avoid wearing bright colours that are too tight, however, as they are not suitable for an office setting. Keep in mind your employer’s point of view and the image that you are sending out to clients when selecting your outfit for the day, whether it is a casual corporate look or the traditional black and white well-tailored suit. Anything dirty, ripped, too tight or baggy is not appropriate for any office environment. What you are wearing will make an impression about the company you are working for, and also about yourself.

Sports clubs: tata ma chanceThe National Lotteries Board (NLB) would like to invite qualifying organisations that support the development of sport at grassroots level to apply for funding.Charlotte Thabang Mampane, Chief Executive Officer of the NLB said the scope of the funding programme is in line with government policy to support all sporting codes in South Africa. The NLB allocates a total of close to R2 billion each financial year in funding to various qualifying organisations covering all three sectors including charities, arts and culture organisations and sporting entities.“We would like to take this opportunity to encourage all interested schools and clubs to forward their application to the NLB as early as possible, observing the funding criteria and procedures to avoid disappointment. Failure to comply with the regulations and prescribed guidelines will result in the application automatically being disqualified,” Mampane said. We

would also like to reiterate the fact that annually the NLB receives requests for funding amounting to more than R70 billion, a figure that is well in excess of the funds available for distribution.” The NLB will give preference to sports clubs and no-fee schools (Quintile 1,2 and 3) in poor, previously disadvantaged and rural communities that support capacity building (training of coaches and technical officials), universal access to facilities and provision or upgrading of access facilities for people with disabilities. “South Africa has also demonstrated at the Common Wealth Games, held recently in Scotland, that we have a wealth of talent and it is imperative that we support the development of our sporting talent from an early age,” concluded Mampane.Application forms are available at the NLB head offices in Pretoria or online at www.nlb.org.za

The launch of the JHB SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge and 5km Fun Run, which will take place on 12 October at the Wanderers Club in Illovo, was held last week. Sonja Laxton, one of South Africa’s most successful runners and the designer of the course, was present and shared her healing process after being knocked over by a vehicle last year. The comical and delightful Phalula twins entertained guests with their competitive yet playful jokes. There is fierce competition for line honours among South Africa’s elite road runners. Diana-Lebo Phalula is virtually assured of winning the Grand Prix, and receiving the keys to her own Nissan Micra, but a number of runners could finish second on the ladder and win a cheque for R50 000. Among those jostling for second place are three-times Grand Prix winner, Rene Kalmer, Phalula’s twin sister Lebogang, who finished third in the Pretoria race after winning the Durban race a week before, and last year’s Grand Prix winner Mapaseka Makhanya. Irvette van Zyl, who has won the Grand Prix twice, has made a late surge, winning the Pretoria race in record time, and if she maintains her current form, she could pose a real threat to the front-runners.The 10km route takes the runners along Corlett Drive and Oxford Road as far as Riviera Road in Killarney, before zig-zagging back through some of Johannesburg’s

leafiest suburbs. The 5km route meanders through the plush suburbs of Illovo, Melrose, Birdhaven and Atholl-Oaklands, giving runners a chance of peeking at some of the most beautiful gardens in Johannesburg. The first 15 000 to register will receive a free race T-shirt and the first 15 000 to finish will receive a medal and a goodie bag. There are wonderful prizes on offer, including a lucky

draw for a Nissan Micra, the Bring-a-Buddy competition, where an entrant and her friend can win New Balance shoes, and the schools competition, where the school with the most entrants can win prizes from electronics giant Mustek. The Johannesburg Challenge coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and proceeds from the race will go to Reach for

Recovery, a support group for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Entries for the race close on September 27, although late entries will be accepted between 9 October and 12 October. Entry forms are available from all SPAR, Superspar and Kwikspar stores, or online at www.spar.co.za or www.sparwomensrace.co.za.

Coming off a s o l i d

showing in the

A b e r d e e n Asset Management

Ladies Scottish Open on Sunday, South African’s Stacy

Bregman is looking to extend her career-best season

with another strong performance in this week’s Helsingborg Open in Sweden. The Johannesburg professional broke into the top 15 on the Ladies European Tour money list with a tie for third place at the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters in Australia early this season. She protected her ranking with a joint fifth finish at the Italian Ladies Open in June and successfully maintained her standing ranking with a fourth top 20 finish in the €250,000 event at Archerfield Links in East Lothian, Scotland.

“This is undoubtedly my best season since I turned pro in 2007,” Bregman

said. “Obviously I’ve gained a lot of experience over the last seven

y e a r s and that experience is starting t o pay off. I believe the biggest

breakthrough has been on the mental side of the game, though. My mental attitude has made the b i g g e s t difference this year.”Bregman is reaping the benefits of working with renowned sport p s y c h o l o g i s t , Maretha Claassen. “I used to get very intense on the golf course and I just got in my own

way. I found it hard to recover from bad shots and bad rounds, because I am such a perfectionist. Maretha has helped me to accept that bad shots happen. I’ve learned to let go and move on and I’m a much better golfer for it. Instead of fighting with myself, I now focus forward. I can leave it behind and it has definitely lifted my game.”The reigning Zambia Ladies Open champion spent much quality time during the recent break at the Momentum World of Golf with her long-time coach, Neville Sundelson, to prepare for the next stretch in Europe.“I’ve been working with Neville for many years and I always touch base with him when I’m home.”“Putting has always been my Achilles Heel, so I also did a lot of work with my short game coach, Neil Cheetham. I’m hitting the ball really well and I have definitely improved my action with the short stick, so I am heading into the next couple of tournaments with a good level of confidence.”Although she is still chasing a maiden win in Europe, Bregman says it no longer consumes her life.“You know, I was my own worst enemy in the

past. I used to chase victory from the first tee in the first round and I never realised just how much unnecessary pressure I put on myself. I’ve matured a lot in the last year, and I know the win will come. With the second stage of the LPGA Qualifying School just a few weeks away, consistency is at the top of my priority list. That is far more important to me right now.”Sunshine Ladies Tour campaigners Kim Williams, Nicole Garcia and Nobuhle Dlamini from Swaziland will also join the action at Vasatorp Golf Club.
