UP, UP AND AWAY: Many families took advantage of Sunday’s warm weather to spend the day at the Rand Air Show. A dazzling variety of planes were on show - both on the ground and in the air - and spectators were afforded the opportunity of meeting the pilots.

Members of Primrose Crime Prevention Youth Desk visited both Makause and Marathon in celebration of Women’s Day.Women were given safety tips to prevent domestic violence and rape, while the children received toys and sweets donated
by Avril Elizabeth and Chubby Chums.The management of Primrose SAPS would like to thank the youth for taking their time to help the police to fight crime in the area. Together we can make Primrose a safer place.

Primrose police are requesting the rightful owners of 5 computers and 2 flatscreens to claim their property.These items were recovered when members of the Flying Squad were chasing a get-away vehicle from Germiston. The driver stopped and ran off, leaving the vehicle with the stolen items still inside it.The owner is requested to go to the Primrose SAPS with documentary proof of purchase and a case number to claim the items. Two suspects, aged 18 and 27 years, were arrested on 11 August for common robbery. Their victim alleged that he was on his way to work on the morning of 19 July, when he was attacked by 3 robbers. One robber hit the victim with a bottle and the other two robbers searched him and stole two cellphones worth R900. Primrose SAPS detectives followed the leads and arrested two suspects.

Primrose police arrested a suspect for rape on 11 August. The suspect’s ex-girl-friend informed the police that he went to her home, when she informed him that she had someone new in her life. The suspect then pushed her into her room and locked the door, saying that he was going to teach her a lesson, after which he raped her.Primrose police traced the suspect, arrested him and detained him at Primrose SAPS. The SAPS is appealing to the community to re-spect women, especially when they say “no.”

On 12 August Primrose police arrested a 30-year-
old suspect for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm at Hostel Malvern East. The victim said he and the suspect had met
to resolve an argument they had had.
The accused assaulted the victim with his fists and then pulled
out a sharp object and stabbed him in his private parts, face, nose and hands. Primrose detectives followed up the leads and arrested the suspect, detaining him at Primrose SAPS. He appeared at Germiston Court and the matter was remanded for plea and trial.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Public Order Policing Unit members’ three days of intensive search for the man who goes by the name of “Chicken,” who is wanted in connection with the death of the 3 –year-old Reiger Park boy Curburne Van Wyk, paid off when he was apprehended on 13 August in Lambton, Germiston.Chicken was confronted by the Metro Police on Piercy Avenue and when asked who he was, gave the police a false name. When the Metro Police produced a photograph of him, however, he admitted that he was Chicken from
Ramaphosa in Reiger Park. The 25-year-old suspect was handed over to SAPS members at Germiston Police Station.

ST MAry’S rETAIn Pullen TrophyThe eighth annual Pullen Trophy tournament recently took place at Roedean School (Parktown, Johannesburg) and saw 16 first team girls’ hockey sides battle it out for the spoils.Participating schools included: Beulieu College, Brescia House, Bryanston High, EG Jansen, Fourways, Holy Rosary, Hyde Park, Jeppe Girls, Kempton Park, Noordheuwel, Parktown Girls, St Mary’s (Waverley), St Andrew’s (Bedfordview), Roedean, Transvalia and Trinityhouse.Defending champions St Mary’s Waverley emerged as the tournament champions after a tough final game against St Andrew’s. The game was deadlocked at 1 – 1 at the final whistle and had to be decided through a penalty shoot-out which saw St Mary’s retain their title and champion status for another year.

The South African golf team for the 2015 Special Olympics has been selected following the National Special Olympics Tournament at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on 11 August.Multiple Special Olympics gold medallist Tom Lugg will lead the South African team at the 2015 Games in Los Angeles from 25 July to 2 August.A total of 160 athletes – children and adults with intellectual disabilities – from 17 schools and homes took part in the national tournament, which for the eighth consecutive year was run by the PGA of South Africa as part of its vision to grow the game amongst all members of society. Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club co-funded the tournament with the PGA of SA.“Working with the athletes is both very humbling and rewarding. I’m always moved and inspired by the Special Olympics athletes’ positive attitude and perseverance,” said Tracey Marais, Events Manager of
the PGA of SA.The PGA coaches, under the leadership of head coach and PGA Professional Martin Briede, work with the individual athletes on their golf skills for months in advance before this tournament.“The instruction is kept simple and basic which is very effective. It’s wonderful to see how the athletes get so much pleasure out of hitting good shots and are not too concerned with the bad. It’s inspiring to see the athletes participate in this game we love,” said Briede.The athletes compete on 5 levels, each including various golf skills and with scores to reflect the execution thereof.Lugg won the gold medal in the Level 5 division, which are 18 holes of individual medal. Joshua Trollip took silver. Andrew White, Konrad Zastrau and Christopher Duffield all also won gold in their respective

Moses Msibi, Bridget Kabini and Tshenolo Mokoto.“The PGA of South Africa works with our golfers for several months coaching them for this tournament, and they do an amazing job with our athletes. It’s amazing the effect they have on the athletes and helping them to develop through golf,” said Igna Steyn, the CEO of Special Olympics South Africa.The Special Olympics includes all sport for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Special Olympics was officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1988. The 2011 Games in Greece was attended by 7 000 athletes.

Actor Tumisho Masha of Sunning Hill with one of South Africa’s top boxers, ryno “The Lion” Liebenberg after the latter won a bloody 12-round battle against russian born Denis Grachev to win the WBC Silver Light-heavyweight belt in the headline bout of the Silver Salvo Boxing Tournament at Emperors Palace’s Centre Court on 9 August . The judges scored the fight 120-108, 117-111 and 116-112 in Liebenberg’s favour which saw him secure his 16th straight professional win, including 11 inside the distance.
