Election Special: Meet TEAM 2007Reported by Vivian Velasco and Jocelyn BernalOct 18, New York, NY - The Philippine New York Jaycees is proud to announce the new set of young leaders that will take over the helm of this organization. Manyof the new officers have been preparing themselves in the last three months to accept greater responsibilities in our beloved chapter. They have attended informa-tional sessions to learn about their positions, they met with the incumbent officers and each were able to make a personal choice to accept a position with the chap-ter. On Oct 18, they re-affirmed their commitment to our chapter by taking on the challenges as they face new roles to lead us to greater heights in 2007!!!

The General Membership Meeting for October was held at the offices of theKorean American Association of Greater New York (KAAGNY) on 24thStreet. After the chapters business portion where the officers reported onthe past months accomplishments and events, the meeting was turned overby President Vivian Velasco to Chairman of the Elections Committee, Sen.Sergs Estrada. He was joined by Comelec members Amb. George Dacoand Sen. Jocelyn Bernal.

Before the elections, quorum needed to be established. It was determinedthat from a membership base of 48 members, 28 members (or 58.33% of thetotal membership) was present. Additionally the chapter allows for paidalumni members to have a vote. Three alumni Voting Members were alsopresent bringing our total voting strength to 31 votes exceeding the 17needed for quorum.

The election proceedings went very smoothly. Each member was nominatedby two chapter members and the process followed many of the electionprotocols that are normally experienced at the State level. This was an ex-cellent opportunity to witness a formal election process that many chapter

members also witnessed at the GALS convention that took place two dayslater.

Here are some of the excerpts from the acceptance speeches of the newlyminted officers. President-elect Gary Abasolo aims to keep up the suc-cess that the chapter has experienced. The excitement from 2006 has gen-erated enough goodwill and interest within the local community that there isno doubt that this energy will continue on to next year.

MDVP-elect Florina Monroy was to make sure that we focus on promotingour chapter brand and delivering on our promise to the members. MSVP-elect Joe Valdez envisions 2007 to be an exciting year as he follows in thefootsteps of 06MSVP Gary Abasolo. His goal is to spread the message ofthe Junior Chamber so that people will freely gravitate to our organization asthe best training ground for young leaders.

CDVP-elect Jun Chua believes that any project undertaken must providevalue not just to the members running the project, but must also deliver re-sults. IDVP-elect Vicky Chang looks back at her Jaycee experience andhas attributed her personal growth to this chapter and therefore will use thatas the basis for sharing her experience with others.

IAVP-elect Bambie Gison is the newest member who was voted into herposition, however, with her professional connection to the Philippines Consu-late and Mission, she was the optimal choice to bridge the local chapter tothe global area. She intends to fully explore Internationalism within theJaycee movement and seeks to ensure harmonious relationship are devel-oped and maintained with other chapters in the world.

    Bylaws Update

Reported by: Jocelyn Bernal, Chairman of the Bylaws Committee 2006At the August GMM, the chapter voted overwhelmingly to accept the follow-

ing changes that are now incorporated into our bylaws.

    1) The official name of the chapter is now The Philippine-New YorkJunior Chamber (Jaycees), Inc.. We dropped of Commerce sothat we can be follow the naming convention already being used by theState and National Organizations. Additionally, having of Commerceas part of our official name caused some confusion as to our presumedties to the Chambers of Commerce that are present in most local com-

manage people and projects; thus, empowering us to transform the world we live in through conscientious contributions to our community. Mission: The Philippine-New York Jaycees provides anavenue for young people to develop themselves as leaders, entrepreneurs and socially responsible individuals through business training, social activities and purposeful impact projects that benefit

our local and national communities, and the global world that we live in. Page 2

2006 - Theme : Share The Vision. Vision: The Philippine-New York Jaycees develops leaders through programs that enhance our personalgrowth & development and cultivates our ability to

munities throughout the country. The elimination of the of Commercewill allow us to focus more on our chapter identity and focus.

    2) The age group of our members is now from 18-40, from 21-39. Therewere some healthy discussions as to the merits of the age change andthe potential liability that we face when we bring an under-agedmember to an event that serves alcohol. After bringing both sides ofthe issue to the floor, the chapter members voted overwhelmingly to

accept younger members and that policies and guidelines would be in-stituted to ensure that under-aged members will be restricted from en-gaging in illegal access to alcohol. This bylaw change will allow youngpeople out of high school to continue their community involvement andleadership development in a positive environment.

    3) The addition of some key member activation programs such as theSpringboard program to the requirements for designating members ingood standing.

Open amendments to be voted on:There were two key articles that were tabled for additional discussion. Theywill be presented once more to the leadership and the membership for adop-tion before Jan 2007.

    1) The composition of the Awards who shall accept any lifetime awardnominations presented by the chapter. Right now, the Awards is com-prised of anyone who has earned the three lifetime awards (there arefour members) and anyone else who has served as State President(there are two members). In order to rotate the composition of theteam, there was a recommendation to change the Awards Committeefrom 6 permanent members to 5 rotating members, three of which willbe appointed by the Chapter President and two of which shall be ap-pointed by the Phil NY Jaycees Senate President. This seems like afair amendment to the Bylaw on the Awards committee. It has to stillgo through the proper approval process with the Board and the mem-bers at large.

    2) The addition of a new bylaws section governing the general criteria for

the lifetime awards which include but are not limited to the New YorkState Jaycees Governorship, the United States Jaycees Ambassador-ship and the Junior Chamber International Senatorships.

    3) New York State changed their fiscal year from a calendar schedule(Jan to Dec) to a Feb-Jan year. The chapter will need to discuss themerits of adopting this fiscal period.

If you are interested in sharing your point of view with regards to the aboveopen amendments, you can address them to me so that we can include thatin our discussion prior to voting.

    GALS Convention, Rochester

Reported by Jocelyn BernalRochester, NY Oct 20-22

The third quarter convention could have been just any other convention thatchapter members attend. This one was in the heart of Rochester, home toKodak and Western New York's best kept secret This was the first timethat the entire team decided to take a vacation day so as to arrive in Roches-ter earlier. It was a 6-8 hour drive from the heart of New York City. Threecars left from NY and Jersey City Car 1 CDVP Jaime Torrejons car left first

followed by Car 2- MSVP Gary Abasolos car. The last car to leave was PPWilli Gamboas car. It was a race to see who would get to Rochester first. After dodging a massive car accident on Route 80, we arrived in the orderthat we left. We made it in enough time for Gov. Willi Gamboa to be presentfor the opening ceremonies. Gov. Willi was running for the position of StateIAVP and had to be there to meet the campaign requirements.

The opening ceremonies at 11:00 pm

was a great way to meet all the Jay-cees. It was also wonderful to see 12of our members attend this portion ofthe convention since we normally walkinto a convention in the wee hours ofthe morning. While the rest of thechapter members were socializing,Gov. Willi and I were busy attending the Election Committee meetings, cau-cuses and spreading Gov. Willis message of his plans for next year. Phil NYalso invited Andrea Ciravolo, candidate for President for a short caucus so

that we would get to know herbetter and gave us an opportunityto let her know of our concernsand issues for next year. By thetime it was 2:00 am, everyone

went to bed in anticipation of anexciting day ahead.

Saturday morning at 8:30 am CREDENTIALING. This was a process where the chapter members repre-senting the voting strength ofour chapter registered asofficial voters. This requiredtheir physical presence toensure that each was regis-tered at the convention andthat we had enough people toequate the number of votesthat we were entitled to. By9:00am, our 4 voting delegates

led by Pres. Vivian Velascowas seated at the voting section of the meeting room. The remainder of thechapter members were seated at the spectator gallery along the side andtowards the back of the room.

During the Board meeting, we received asurprise Jun Chua was acknowledgedas the most outstanding new member byState IDVP Jaime Curran. This was thefirst time that this honor was bestowed to anew chapter member. We are proud ofJun Chua.

After the business of the state was completed, the election proceedingsbegan. Each delegate was reminded repeatedly not to be late or risk beinglocked out of the meeting room. Luckily all chapter members were back inthe room promptly to witness the state elections.

The State elections Chair Scott Kingsley began the proceedings by officiallyappointing PNY IAVP Florina Monroy as a member of the Election commit-tee as timekeeper. The election for President (Andrea Ciravolo), IndividualDevt VP (Jonathan Kim), Community Devt VP (Christine DAndrade) pro-ceeded smoothly.

Finally, State Exec Dir Kim Stanton presented the nomination speech andJonathan Kim seconded the nomination for Gov. Willi Gamboa. It was proudmoment for all of us when a unanimous ballot was cast by the entire state toelect Gov. Willi Gamboa as our2007 International Affairs VP. Althoughsome chapter members have served in the State in appointive roles (such asGov, Krizteen Dulay as NYSJC Outstanding Young New Yorker ProgramManager), It has been eight years since the chapter had an elected Vice

President at the state level. I was the last one to serve in 1999 also asState IAVP. We are looking forward to Gov. Willi to bring the spirit of interna-tional cooperation to everyone in the state.

The ING NYC Marathon was held last Sunday 5 Nov 2006. It has been anannual tradition of the Philippine-New York Jaycees since 1996 to man theMile 17 Water station(located between 77th & 76th St. along 1st Ave). Aspart of the tradition, the early morning crew also had breakfast at the GreenKitchen Restaurant. The Philippine-New York Jaycees banner was strategi-cally placed beside the big Poland Spring "I Can" banner for increase visibil-ity. With all the volunteers donning volunteer caps, ponchos and tshirts, everybody was excited for the first runner to pass by. All the volunteers took

turns in setting up the tables, filling cups with water, distributing cups to therunners and maintaining the tidiness of the area. Everybody was cheerfullyhanding out waters to the runners, and shouts of encouragement were heardevery second. Lance Armstrong created a buzz amongst the members whenhe passed by the water station. Volunteers were also amazed and inspiredwhen they saw physically challenged runners passing by. Teamwork amongthe volunteers contributed to the success of this project.

Through combined efforts of The Philippine NYJC and the KAJC we wereable to bring a distinguished guest speaker to Region South sponsored bythe JCI, in the person of JCI World Treasurer and US Metro Chapter Direc-tor, Ms. Lori Tomlin who conducted a 5-part ID College on Write Up, Speak-Up, Debate, Effective Communications and Business/Career AdvancementStrategies that not only develops and improves a members competitive skillsduring Jaycee conventions but contributes to personal development that onecan apply in their professional careers and relationships with families, friends, peers and at the workforce. Special interest by attendees was re-garding the Career Advancement. The common denominator for an individ-uals success is having aplan. They have spent thetime establishing and writinghigh goals, researching theircompanys opportunities, mapping out a plan, andmost importantly, working

that plan. Stategies werediscussed further in theseareas.

Other tips to success that may lead to being noticed the right way includedworking the extra mile to learn new skills, applying strong work ethics, findinga mentor with achievements in that field, researching the direction and long-term goals of the company and see if you can be that someone who canhelp lead the future; be a self-starter.

Ms. Tomlin was also the guest speaker during the 1st part of the day whenthe Region South Meeting was held. Due to her presence, we had a sur-prise visit from NYSPresident Pat Wallenand Parliamentarian

Bridging the World one chapter at a time

MSVP Gary Abasolo had an opportunity to meet up with our sisterchapters and other Jaycee members from the Philippines during hisrecent trip home. He was hosted by JCI-Manilena Jaycees (an all

female chapter) with 2006 President Jeanine de Jesus who intro-duced him to her chapter as well as to the JCI-Manila chapter(an almale chapter and one of the oldest chapters in the Philippines). Joining him during this dinner get together was his sister Alice, who wasalso a past Management Development VP for our chapter. He wasalso welcome by 2007 President Eileen Esteban. The JCI-Manilenachapter has been a long time sister chapter. Last year, we donatedmoney to contribute to the Toy Library project in Manila.

Gary also met up with JCI-Pateros chapter headed by 2006 Presi-dent Judith Montenegro and 2007 President Marvin Labrador.

After one year of planning, our respective chapters have finally com-pleted the official twinning ceremony and are now sister chapters.

The success of sister chapter depends on sharing of information, accomplishments, ideas and projects. We are pleased that our firstjoint project will be the Toys for Kids slated for January 2007.

During the second week of Garys Philippine vacation, he headed forthe family home base in Cebu. IT was here that he had a chance tomeet up with JCI-Zugbuana (another all female chapter) headed byPresident Beauty Viduya and the JCI-Cebu Uptown chapter with2007 National Executive Vice President of Junior Chamber Phil-ippines, Ray Salgado. Gary was hosted to a luncheon by the twochapters.

Gary was overwhelmed at the hospitality extended to him by themany chapters that he met up with. Never did he imagine that hewould ever get such a reception from fellow Jaycees. He looks for-ward with greater appreciation at the global scope of the JuniorChamber experience.
