year plan confirms that the Tama-Toledo

bypass funding is on track to be com-

pleted by Nov 2010, price tag $54M. Por-

tions of the hwy connecting Tama-Benton

and Marshall-Story is also in the 5 year

plan for improvements.

SMALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACHIEVE

Study suggests that smaller rural districts

are more efficient academically with

higher proficiency scores and lower drop-

out rates. Iowa ranked 3rd in the Nation

with the majority of its 250+ school dis-

tricts have K-12 populations under 800

students. Source: U.S. Department of Edu-

cation’s National Center for Education

Statistics.

John Ernest Vineyard & Winery won a

double gold for their The Morning Dew

and a gold for their Dusty Road wines

from Appellation America.

COMMUNITY PLANNING

Thanks to a Hazard Mitigation grant, the

cities of Tama County have started a com-

munity planning process that addresses

not only safety planning, but also commu-

nity development factors to shape the

future of each community.

2009 EARMARKS

Meskwaki Clinic was the only earmark

with direct impact to Tama Co. that re-

ceived support in the omnibus spending

bill in March. It received $618,000. Tens of

millions of dollars where allocated to Iowa

overall for projects ranging from Research

& Development, Education, Health Care,

Government Facilities, to Arts & Culture

in cities and organizations large and small.

PLANS FOR BIO-ENERGY CAMPUS

City of Tama & the state of Iowa have

been approached to be conduits in a $520

million bond for Alpha holdings interested

acquisition development and construction

of a fully integrated bio-energy campus in

Tama and Dexter.

RETAIL GROWTH CAPACITY

An ISU study indicates over $80M of retail

dollars leave the county. Researchers esti-

mate that a capacity of just under $30M

could feasibly be recouped if the right

retail businesses locate in Tama Co. Cur-

rently inquiries from national chains with

interest locating on the new bypass indi-

cate an increasing awareness of the po-

tential for retail in Tama County.
