TERM 3 NO. 21 15 th July 2019 News from the Principal’s Desk Hi everyone. Welcome back to Semester 2. I hope everyone has had a restful term break and is refreshed for a busy and eventful few months ahead. Before the holiday break, attendance awards were handed out and our data is again exceptional with the majority of our students achieving 95% attendance for Term 2 or the semester. I would like to reiterate the importance of acknowledging great attendance so that maximum student learning can be achieved. Awards presented are only on a bit of paper, but nevertheless putting the time in to present these to our children is essential to having a positive school environment, which is reflected in sound attendance. Tomorrow, our Grade 5/6 students will be off to see Hitler’s Daughter in Shepparton. This text was focused on during term 2 and will be reinforced during this performance. Can payments for this be made ASAP please. We finally have started our visits to the Men’s Shed and we hope that these occur on a regular basis most Friday’s. These are pretty informal at the moment, but I am sure that there will be some more formal jobs for our kids to help with soon. In the past, we have assisted with Christmas decorations for the community and we hope to be involved in this again towards the end of the year. A big thank you to any families who made donations or assisted on the day of our Bunnings BBQ during the holiday break. This is always worthwhile and we were able to raise a substantial amount of money which will be used for some new stone in our car park and some soft fall for our playgrounds. These are ongoing costs which the school has to raise funds for. We hope to have this opportunity again next year. In this edition of the newsletter, there is information on our third Curriculum Day, the Parent Opinion Survey, Production and School Disco. Please read these carefully, and as always don’t hesitate to contact the school if any clarification is needed. The township of Tallygaroopna is entering a Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Town Competition and our school will have a visit in regard to this on Friday 9 th August. We plan to do some work on our school grounds prior to judging – we may even announce a Working Bee, so if you can assist in any way please contact the school. Many hands make light work! Thank you to the families who have already done some weeding over the holidays. Finally, work with the Production is picking up speed and we are hoping to set up our temporary stage in the Project Space this week. Please be conscious of this area – we will try our best to make it safe and secure for everyone. A reminder about the Curriculum Day on Monday – this day is a Pupil Free Day while staff complete a whole day focusing on Managing Aggressive Behaviour. I look forward to catching up with parents throughout the week. Karen will be at the office to attend to any matters if needed. 3. Community Helpers – F/1 This term, the F/1 unit of study will be Jobs in our Community i.e. doctors, nurses, dentists, dental hygienists, vets, police officers, teachers, chefs, hairdressers, artists, farmers, firefighters, librarians, bus drivers etc. If you or anyone you know have an interesting career or job and would like to come in to talk to the F/1 class about your job, please contact Mrs H whenever possible. We would imagine that the discussion would be approximately 20 – 30 minutes with questions. The F/1 Integrated Study times will be Monday and Tuesday afternoons (2:00pm). If you would like to participate but this does not work for you please contact Mrs H to see if we can arrange another time.

If you have any play items, books or posters about jobs that you would like to lend to the F/1 classroom we would be very grateful. If you could make sure they are clearly

labelled, Mrs H will get them back to you at the end of term. 4. Mystery Readers – F/1 Mystery Readers are very special guests that come into the classroom to read to the F/1 class. Kids absolutely LOVE their mums, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents or special friend coming into the classroom. A mystery reader can be anyone who is willing! What should I read? A Mystery Reader can choose any short text, poem or picture story book that may hold meaning for you or your child. It might be a book that was your favourite as a child, or a book that you enjoy reading with your child. If you don’t have a book then Mrs H will gladly choose one for you. When will Mystery Readers come to school? Mystery Readers will come to school at approximately 2:30pm on a Friday afternoon (just before school assembly) however if the Mystery Reader needs to change to a different time we will do our best to accommodate them. Please just check with Mrs. H. Your child will be so excited that you participated but please remember to keep it ‘top secret’ until your big day arrives. The week before your visit, Mrs H will send you a reminder, along with a request for 5 clues to read to the class the day of your visit. There should be 5 clues that start general and become more specific. By the fifth clue, your child should be able to guess that you are the special mystery reader for the day! Examples of clues you might send are….

1. I am the youngest child in my family.

2. I grew up in another country.

3. I love sport and enjoy watching my children play sport.

4. My job is looking after people.

5. My family just welcomed an adorable new kitten called Patches.

5. Classes for 2020 We are currently discussing the formation of classes for 2020. At present, we are anticipating a reasonable sized group of new Foundation students so composite grades may be: F/1, 1/2, 3/4 and 5/6. These grades will allow consistent and low student numbers in each class. It is essential that enrolment forms are in ASAP so that appropriate planning can be put in place in regard to the 2020 school year. There may be some changes in relation to teachers with grades next year, but this will not be confirmed until late in the year. 6. Curriculum Day (early Term 3) Our next Pupil Free Day / Curriculum Day is confirmed for Monday 22nd July. All staff will be involved in Professional Learning with a focus on managing aggressive behaviour. The school office will be unattended however any messages can be left on the school’s answering machine if needed. Families will need to make alternative arrangements on this day. No OSH service will be available.

8. Children’s Crossing / Speed Limit / Parking on the Road We are looking into approaching the local council in regard to concerns regarding traffic along Victoria Street. The law states the following: “Children’s crossings are only in operation when flags are displayed. When flags are displayed, drivers must not proceed through the crossing if children or adults are still on the crossing or about to start crossing. This is the law regardless of the presence of a crossing supervisor. When children’s crossings flags are not displayed, pedestrians should give way to passing road traffic. Drivers should always use caution when approaching children’s crossings when children are present. Not every child will know or remember the different rules.” 9. Parent Opinion Survey Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22nd July to Sunday 11th August. The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Greek, Turkish, Somali and Punjabi. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. For more information, see: Parent Opinion Survey

10. Performance – Grade 5/6 Our second performance will involve the Grade 5/6 students going to Eastbank in Shepparton on Tuesday 16th July to see Hitler’s Daughter (based on the award winning book by Jackie French) at 12.30pm (leaving school at midday). The running time for the show is 60 minutes and is suitable for Year 5 to Year 8 students. Permission forms are due now and the cost will be $12 per student ($9 show / $3 for the bus). The play begins early morning somewhere in the Australia countryside. Four children wait for the school bus and they decide to play a game; a simple game of story-telling. As they shelter in the bus stop from a raging storm Anna creates an intriguing story and simultaneously on the stage we begin to hear the bombing of Berlin and we see Heidi crawl from a bunker. With a large birthmark across her face, we discover that Heidi is the disfigured daughter of Hitler. Caught in the turmoil of war, she is hidden away by her father, one of the most dreaded men in history.

Back at the bus shelter Mark becomes so engrossed in Anna's story; he begins to wonder how it would feel to be the child of someone as evil as Hitler. As the play evolves, Mark's search for truth in a world of half-truths becomes clearer and the story culminates in the bombing of Berlin, the fall of the Third Reich and the end of Heidi's innocence.

Hitler's Daughter poses powerful questions and examines moral issues in relation to society's fears and prejudices.

11. Colder Months - Tissues We would be very appreciative if each family could please supply a box of tissues for the school in anticipation of colder weather (and possibly running noses and coughs!). We remind families to please encourage their children to dress appropriately for the weather. 12. Car Park Safety – reminder Over the last few weeks, we have had too many children walking through the car park at the end of the day. This is becoming a concern in line with our School Car Parking policy. Could the following points from this policy be reinforced with members of our school community please. • Parents may drop off children at the walking path in the car park every morning. • At the end of the day, children are only to enter the car park once they have been collected by their parents. Children will assemble in the senior playground area and be monitored by staff.

PLEASE ALSO BE CONSCIOUS OF THE BUS ARRIVING AT SCHOOL TO ASSIST WITH CONGESTION AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE DAY.

13. Communicating with Staff Please feel free to discuss any issues with myself or specific class teachers. At Tallygaroopna PS, we are accessible to parents and we value the importance of positive and constructive communication with all of our families. Please contact the school to make an appointment if needed – so that issues can be addressed at an appropriate time which does not affect normal planning and learning time. 14. Woorabinda Camp Good luck to the students attending this camp this week. We are sure that this will be a wonderful experience and we look forward to many stories when you return to school next Tuesday. 15. National Tree Day We will be planting at school at midday on Friday 26th July to celebrate National Tree Day. A representative from Greater Shepparton Council will assist students with planting grasses and shrubs around the frog bog garden and under the trees at the front of the school. Some parent helpers would be appreciated. If you can assist, please contact the school. We are running a Colouring Competition to coincide with National Tree Day. Categories are Pre-school, F-2, 3-6 and Adult. Colouring sheets can be picked up from the school office or the Post Office and are due back on July 25th. Winners will be announced at Assembly on Friday 26th July. There will be a prize for each category.

16. Outside School Hours Care Unfortunately, our OSH numbers have dropped and it would terrific to see some new permanent or casual placements in this service which operates from 3.25pm to 6pm, 5 days a week. This service to our families involves a large financial commitment by School Council and we will be discussing the sustainability of this program at the end of the year. Our OSH Care service has been in operation since 2014 and as our school has grown we had hoped that enrolments in this service would continue to grow. 17. Assembly Announcements Any student announcements at assembly for sport / achievements need to be written down and approved by staff in preparation for assembly on a Friday. This will assist with trying to fit in assembly in such a short time frame at the end of the week. There will be a plastic pocket stapled to the divided wall for any items - just make sure these are checked by staff please. 18. Production The 5/6 students have been busy helping to make props for our Term 3 production, Rock Bottom. They have also been practising their lines regularly. Thank you to those who have been able to bring in props. On Production night, 2-6s will be supplied with a coloured shirt and they are to wear their own black pants. F-1s will need to come dressed in all black. 19. School Uniform - reminder A uniform dress code reinforces in students a pride in their own appearance, instils recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in representing their school. A reminder to all families to reinforce this please. From May until the end of August, school beanies and scarves are permitted to be worn outside – these can be purchased from school in line with our uniform policy as well – we would appreciate green or red beanies and scarves only.

CAN APPROPRIATE UNIFORMS BE REINFORCED PLEASE – BLACK SHORTS

OR PANTS. 20. Community Plan Meeting The following dates have been set for the Community Plan Committee – all are welcome. This traditionally takes place on the 1st Monday of every month – meeting at 7pm at the Town Hall or CFA Shed. The Greater Shepparton Council are aiming to have the new Tallygaroopna Community Plan endorsed in June. See website below for further details. http://greatershepparton.com.au/community/neighbourhoods/community-plans/tallygaroopna-community-plan Meeting Dates: Monday 5th August Monday 2nd September Monday 7th October Monday 4th November Monday 2nd December 21. Absence Notes Absence notes are a legal requirement for all absences. Please use the school absence note or submit an absence on Flexibuzz. Both of these are the preferred methods because they are completed immediately. If either of these are not convenient - please ring the school. Formal notes are needed for audit records and your support would be appreciated. We would prefer no text messages.

22. School Fees now due School fees are now due. All school fee information was summarised in our Parent Payment Charges letter which went home at the beginning of the year. Feel free to contact the office if any clarification is needed.

23. Parents’ Club Initiative The Parents' Club would like to support the Colgate Community Challenge and promote the collection of oral waste products which will be sent off at no cost to the school. This initiative fits very well into our Resource Smart program –

specific information is provided on the link below. Please send in any waste toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, etc to school. The collection box is near the door of the BER Project space and there is another one at the Post Office.
