Premier Announces Funding for Colac Colac

Caravan ParkThe Andrew’s Labor Government

today announced $500,000 for the redevelopment of the Colac Colac Caravan Park, part of the new Bushfire Tourism and Business Fund.

Premier Daniel Andrews together with Minister for Emergency Services Lisa Neville, made a series of announcements today from the Buchan Caves, part of a wider focus to attract visitors and support local jobs in bushfire-affected areas.

Premier Andrews said “These projects will drive visitors to East Gippsland and North East Victoria – boosting business and supporting jobs.”

Towong Shire Mayor David Wortmann welcomed the announcement saying “Colac Colac Caravan Park welcomes thousands of visitors every year, acting as a gateway to the Upper Murray and a major contributor to the local economy.”

“The funding announced today will mean the planned minor upgrade as

part of the Council Plan can now be up scaled to transform and future-proof the Park. The redevelopment will increase accommodation capacity and enhance the unique natural features that Colac Colac is so well-known for.”

“This will mean more tourists will visit the Upper Murray each year particularly at peak periods and during events, helping to fuel the local economy” Mayor Wortmann said.

Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes said “These projects are the next step in helping locals, businesses and communities get back on their feet.”

Colac Colac Caravan Park (pronounced “Clack Clack”) is situated on the beautiful Nariel Creek, approximately 120km east of Albury/Wodonga and 450km north-east of Melbourne. The popular park provides a family-friendly haven for family visitors throughout the year.

On Wednesday Towong Shire Council welcomed the Minister

for Local Government the Hon. Adem Somyurek who announced a $10,000 grant for Council to run a program of events to help fire affected businesses across Towong Shire. The welcomed support is in addition to funding already provided by the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister Somyurek met with Towong Shire Mayor Cr David Wortmann along with CEO Juliana Phelps, Cr Jennie Star, Cr Aaron Scales and representatives from local businesses. The minister confirmed the grant to support Business Victoria’s Local Events program to provide dedicated seminars, training workshops and events to Towong Shire businesses in partnership with council and business chambers.

The additional funding follows $2.2M already provided from the State Government to establish the Upper Murray Community Recovery Hub. A proposal for how the funding will be allocated to best support bushfire affected communities will be shared at the March Council meeting.

The meeting also provided an

Additional funding for fire affected Towong Shire businesses

opportunity to discuss the challenges that come with being Victoria’s smallest rural council in managing recovery efforts across an area as vast as the Upper Murray bushfires which burnt 308,000 hectares, or 45% of the municipality.

Mayor Wortmann said the visit was just another example of the support Towong Shire Council has received from both State and Federal Governments in the wake of the bushfires.

“The funding allows us to work closely with fire affected communities to put strong foundations in place in the form of resource and plans to deliver a sustainable recovery in partnership with our communities."

“This latest grant allows us to narrow in on the needs of small businesses to give them the practical support they need” he said.

Towong Shire Welcomes New Australian Citizens

Seven of Towong Shire’s residents are now able to officially call

Australia home, following the Council’s citizenship ceremony on Tuesday.

The citizens who come from the Philippines, South Africa, Slovenia and the UK have made their new home in Towong Shire towns of Corryong, Tallangatta Valley, Old Tallangatta and Bethanga.

Mayor Cr David Wortmaan said the ceremony is a special milestone as they formally become Australian citizens.

“It is an honor to welcome our newest Australians from a number of diverse backgrounds who now call Towong Shire home.”

“Many of the citizens have already called Australia and Towong Shire home for years and are already valuable community members. Today’s ceremony simply formalises their commitment to Australia” he said.

The citizens were joined at the ceremony by their support networks including family members, friends, colleagues and fellow students.

Towong Shire Council hold Citizenship Ceremonies throughout the year. Residents wishing to become an Australian Citizen can find out more by emailing [email protected] or calling 02 60715 100.

Well, we didn’t think it would happen,

but the weather held out on Friday 14th for the 2020 TPS Swimming Carnival! The pool was surrounded by a sea of gold, red and green, as students made the pilgrimage down to the pool to not only earn points in the pool, but also cheer their lungs out on the side lines. It was fantastic to see the way in which our students tackled the day. We had students powering down the pool, motivated to beat their personal best and students who were willing to get in and give it a go even though their technique wasn’t quite right, just to get points for their team! Our House Captains and Vice Captains did a brilliant job at stepping up and being leaders in our school, not only being role models themselves but carefully considering how they could include everyone in their team.

It was wonderful to see that students embraced the spirit of friendly competition and that final placings mattered less than the encouragement received from peers, families and staff. Students loudly cheered for their classmates regardless of their team and rallied around those who needed the extra support. The ear to ear smiles made their achievements all the more memorable!

Thank you to all of our helpers on the day – to our swimming instructors Chris and Justin for helping out all day, to our lifeguards Jonty and Emma, all the parents and friends who stepped up to help out with the timing of events, and everyone who came on the day to support the students.

The day culminated in the hotly contested student v teacher v parent race. It was a tight competition this year with 3 student teams versus the reigning champions of the past few years (the parents), and the teacher team. However it was the teacher team’s year to shine, storming home for a tight win against the parents! No need to mention the extra recruits the teacher’s recruited during the 2 weeks leading up to the event.

Congratulations does need to go to the following students who took home the following awards from the day:

Pennant season has come to an end. With one round remaining the club needed a win against Kiewa at Kiewa and hope other results go our

way. Kiewa are a very hard team to beat at home but somehow Club managed to get over the line, but with Dederang and Corryong A1 having a draw we managed to make the finals. Unfortunately Corryong 1 was to good for us.

Club pairs and B grade Championships are being played at the minute. Pairs are down to the final with Yari & Forry playing Michelle & Rowdy. Plenty of tournaments still going on around the area. Victoria Hotel played on the 1st march - results next issue.

A GRADEThe game against Raiders

saw Tallangatta bowl Raiders out for 118. 3 wickets each went to Mat Armstrong and Fraser Ellis, whilst Mat Oswell and Sahib Malhotra took 2 each. The run chase started well enough with the consistent Ollie Willett making 26 before a mini slump saw Tallangatta struggling at 4 for 57, but the consistent Sahib Malhotra(52 not out) saw Tallangatta comfortably home at 5 for 121.

The game against Albury promised to be one of the games of the season, but Tallangatta faltered a little with the bat. After a promising start at 2 for 90, the dismissal of Grant Chessari(30) saw a catastrophic collapse with Tallangatta teetering at 9 for 145. The one constant was again Sahib Malhotra, who eventually found an ally in Ryan Bartel at no 11 who hung around for 2 runs whilst Sahib(89 not out) smashed more than 40 at the other end to give Tallangatta a glimmer of hope at 9 for 185. For Tallangatta to win the game they needed to dismiss the classy Zimbabwean import Innocent Kaia cheaply, but he had different ideas producing a near chanceless innings of 114 not out, and received a standing ovation from both teams as he guided Albury to 4 for 186 and comfortable victory.

This means A Grade finished 6th and will face Wodonga in a cut throat Semi.

B GRADEThe raiders game saw Tallangatta bat

first and struggle a little with the bat with the consistent Greg McGilvray guiding the team to 9 for 144. In the field, a Lachie Paton (5 for 22) led rout saw Raiders dismissed for 85. Patrick Clark also snared 3 wickets.

The Albury game saw Tallangatta sent in on a tricky wicket, but an opening stand of 48 of which Nic Paton made 30 gave

Tallangatta the chance of a good score. However a collapse of sorts saw Tallangatta slump to 4 for 68, before a 40 run partnership between Dean Simmons(42) and Lachie Paton(22) restored some order and allowed Tallangatta to limp to 151. The bowling attack of Tallangatta then highlighted how difficult the wicket was, as they shredded the Albury batting line-up and dismissed them for 91. Lachie Paton dominated again with 4 for 16 with Julian Butters equally effective with 3 for 12.

The Bs have finished third and will face Lavington at home on Saturday

C GRADEThe C Grade semi saw a nail biter with

Tallangatta dismissing Corowa for 111 with Scott Worley the destroyer with 4 for 19. What should have been a comfortable run chase saw Tallangatta teetering at 8 for 109, and then 8 for 111 before they lost both wickets for no further runs to leave an apparent tie. Tallangatta would have gone through because they finished higher on the ladder, but a scorebook check determined that Tallangatta had won by 2 runs. On the 25th February, as part of Tallangatta Health Services

leadership goal in the Global Green Healthy Hospitals, we worked alongside Tallangatta Neighbourhood House, Tallangatta Secondary College, and DELWP Hume to broadcast the acclaimed movie ‘2040’ at both Tallangatta Secondary College and the Tallangatta Community Centre. This movie looks at what 2040 could be if we simply implemented strategies that we have already invented to reduce carbon emissions and create a healthier and more sustainable planet.

The Secondary College saw the film broadcast to all year 10 students, after which they partook in an activity to explain where they would like to see Tallangatta at in 2040, this discussion was led by the DELWP Hume representatives Louise Marston and Kristy Roche who will utilise this information to be included in their regional study and research papers on Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan.

Later in the day saw the screening at the local Community Centre with 23 locals in attendance. At the conclusion of this screening, three speakers discussed topics relevant to the area.

First was John Parry, representing Totally Sustainable Tallangatta Community Group, who discussed the exciting prospect of Tallangatta developing an Urban Farm Community Garden. Requests are being sought for some leaders to be part of this initiative.

Secondly, we heard from Matt Jones from Totally Renewable Yackandandah, who discussed the solar initiative that is underway there including microgrids, and the commencement of the local power supplier Indigo Power as a part of this project.

Finally, Denise Parry (CEO of Tallangatta Health Service) talked about the involvement of Tallangatta Health Service in the Global Green Healthy Hospitals initiative which has ten goals. Tallangatta Health Service has chosen

in the first year the goal of Leadership and Energy. Being at this event is a part of this Leadership goal. Denise Parry challenged participants to ask what their personal connection to environmental sustainability is, and the next step they could take. As a part of our goal of energy we are installing a 99kW solar system on the hospital roof in March/April.

The afternoon wrapped up with the locals answering a few questions around what changes have been observed locally due to climate changes, what actions are they currently doing to be part of change, and who is local to discuss initiatives with and what is currently in play. Louise and Kristy from DELWP will collate this

information and will provide it back to the community over the next few months. This information will also be part of their ongoing research for the local area.

We would like to thank Lou Newman from Tallangatta Neighbourhood House for coordinating the application and screening opportunity of this film, and also thank DELWP Hume for facilitating the screening, through financing the licencing costs of screening the film, and leading the discussions around this very important topic.

If you missed out on the opportunity to view this film, but would still like to see it, there is plans for another screening at the neighbourhood House in April, date to be confirmed.Above: Discussion following 2040 screening

Kiewa Memorial Park, situated on the main road in Kiewa and opposite the Kiewa General Store, is another wonderful asset for the Kiewa/Tangambalanga community. The Park is home to the Kiewa Cricket and Tennis Clubs and has playground and BBQ facilities for locals and tourists alike. The beautifully shaded area is the perfect environment to hold such events as the Australia Day celebrations and the Indigo Mini Music Festival. The Park is on Crown Land and requires a Committee of Management under the Department of Land, Water and Planning (DWELP). This Committee oversees the Park generally and receives running costs from Indigo Shire and user groups. Opportunities for additional improvements in the park are

Tangambalanga Club Connection Kiewa and Tangambalanga are

having a garage sale on SUNDAY 22nd March 2020. In previous years, this event has been held on a Saturday, but after feedback from the community, Sunday is being trialled this year. This way families who have sport on Saturday will still be able to participate in the day.

Town garage sales are the best way to have a garage sale; there have been over 200 buyers come through every year that this event has been run. Traditionally buyers are not so keen to travel far to go to a garage sale outside of Albury Wodonga, but it is a whole different story when they know there are 20 plus houses selling their treasures.

If you would like to have a garage sale at your home or have a table at the Community Garden site, the cost is only $15. So, what do you get for your money? You receive a laminated 'Garage Sale' sign for your wheelie bin, some balloons to attach to your wheelie bin to create attention, an advert in the Border Mail on the Saturday and your property marked on a detailed map so participants

can easily find your home.At the Community Garden site, there will

be a huge seedling sale, Woodfire Desire Pizzas and House of Richard Coffee keeping everyone topped up with great food and drinks and households having tables of goodies to sell.

Map sales will be $2 at the site of the Community Garden, with all proceeds going directly back to our town’s community groups.

Police Chat Many of you have mentioned that you haven’t

really seen me around lately. So where have I been and what have I been doing? I spent the first few weeks of 2020 at the Tallangatta and Wodonga ICC’s - Incident Control Centres. This is where representatives from all the different agencies involved in an emergency event set up. For the devastating bushfires throughout North East Victoria, including the Walwa, Cudgewa and Corryong areas, this included Police, CFA, Parks Victoria, Shire representatives, Army, Ambulance and medical representatives, Agriculture Victoria and a heap of logistical assistance and support people. Being located in the same place allows all the services to get the same information at the same time to ensure a cohesive response.

Whilst the fires are out there is still a long way to go to recovery. We can all help, and

it doesn’t have to be hard work! My family have been having a wonderful time travelling around to local areas for lunch, dinner and day trips. The areas that need our help are on our door step. Turn off the technology and spend some quality time with your family and friends - and help a local.

If you, or someone you know, looks like they’re struggling please have a chat. Talk with your colleagues - they know what you’ve been through. Talk to your family - they see you’re doing it tough. Talk with your friends - they can help you get through this. If you need to speak with a professional - talk to your Doctor. They will put you in touch with the right people. You don’t have to go through this alone.

Kiewa RSL held their AGM last Thursday. After seven years as President, Leanne Legg stood down from the position. Leanne has provided excellent leadership over the time and has made sure that the Kiewa RSL Sub-branch has lived up to the RSL motto "Serving Still".

The Sub-branch is busy preparing for Anzac Day Services.

It was a warm morning of tennis to finish the season, perfect timing for a club breakup at the Tangambalanga pool afterwards. Most of the Section 3 and 4 players enjoyed a swim and a BBQ lunch, along with their parents. A big thank you to Jo for organising the event and to Ash for cooking the BBQ.

Kiewa has had a very successful tennis season for 2019/ 2020. In Section 3, Kiewa finished 2nd on the ladder. This is a great achievement, considering we weren’t able to field a team in this section last year.

In Section 4, Kiewa Blue finished 3rd, Kiewa Green 5th and Kiewa Red 6th on the ladder. We had a lot of new players join us in this section who had never played competition tennis before, so this is an excellent result. The enthusiasm from all the kids at training and during the games, has been great.

Former independent Member for Indi, academic and rural consultant, Cathy McGowan AO, will deliver the 2020 George Briscoe Kerferd Oration in July in Beechworth.

Oration Chair, Karenne Thistleton, said she was delighted that Ms McGowan had agreed to deliver the Oration.

“In 2006, Cathy delivered a very successful Oration which showed that communities could enrich their communities through strong community engagement and participation. In 2020, she will consider ‘the Australia we want’, with a focus on the engagement of young people across Indigo Shire in the lead up to the Oration”.

Ms Thistleton said the organising committee will engage a project officer for three months in the lead up to the Oration, to develop a participatory governance model through which young people can actively engage in decision making about the things which matter to them most.

Expressions of interest for the project position are currently being received. Anyone interested in the position should contact Karenne Thistleton by email at [email protected] or by telephone on 0490 013 921 by COB Tuesday, 25

Welcome to the penultimate report from the “Cranky Curator” for season 2019/20.

We have had a great season to date, with finals about to start. At the end of the home & away season A Grade finished 6th, B Grade 4th, C Grade missed out on finals, Under 14s and Under 12s finished on top. So, yet again, a highly successful year for our club.

Our captain, Josh Bartel, had a good after-noon with the ball recently, taking 4 wickets in 5 balls including a hattrick - 2 wickets off the last 2 balls of the over, followed by 1 off the first ball of his next over!

As we go to press, our venture into finals is about to begin - good luck to all participating.

On a club note, Saturday 22nd was our Last Ticket Standing draw and a good crowd watched as Georgia Morris took out the first prize, while Mark & Dawn Cardwell came second.

Recently our Woolies Blaster Juniors were

given the opportunity to attend the Women’s Twenty 20 match between Australia and Eng-land which also took in the Allstars charity match at Junction Oval St Kilda. They were given VIP treatment, sitting in bean bags be-side the oval boundary and getting plenty of celebrity signatures on their hats and shirts. If anyone happened to be watching the event on television that day, they may have witnessed Miss Sue, dropping a catch in the crowd!

A full report of finals happenings in the next Gazette

As we get to the pointy end of the season, our Section 1 team has again pushed through to the Grand Final. A hard-fought win against Granya in the semis set them up for a grand final berth against Yackandandah. A great team effort by all, but a particular mention to our “young guns”, Cooper Lambden and Kel Peters, who both put in a mighty effort and showed no sign of nerves in the semi-final. A full report of the grand final and photos will appear in the next issue of the Gazette.

In Section 2, Tangam Brown just missed out on playing finals by the barest of margins - actually if they had won just one more set during the season they would probably have got in! But a great effort by all - look out next year as they will be even more hungry to play finals.

Our Juniors finished off their season with a pool party at Tangam pool. What an awesome lot of kids we have in our junior

teams - thanks for your efforts throughout the season. We may not have won too many matches but we had a lot of fun - and every single one of them has improved their tennis. Thanks go to Jack, Luke, Chelsea and the two Tanyas for your help on training nights. We hope to see everyone back again next season.

Throughout February we have been trialling a Fast Four format for our social night comp and this has been quite successful. We have only had 5 teams participating, however the fast-paced, short format has been embraced by all and has been a lot of fun. By the end of the comp, everyone was remembering to hit the lets and when to best use the “powerplay”.
