Cornell LaFlare hails all the way from Gary, Indiana and is currently based out of Atlanta where he attends the University of West GA as a Psychology major. Lover of all things art and inspired by pas-sion, this designer gets off by the notion of the grind or the struggle to make things happen. He views inventions differently than most. While others look at the cool thing that has been made, he looks at what it took to make it. He believes that no matter what obstacles are in the way, passion can push you through them. He says that the hardest thing he had to do to make his DREAM become a reality was to educate himself on the world that he was jump-ing into. Initially uninterested in fashion, he had to research trends, production, and market-ing to get tips on how to make his line stand out compared to other urban clothing lines.

MALIK YOBAActor, Educator, Inspirational Speaker and Author

    Interview with Paulette Carter

Best known for his roles in the Dis-ney classic, Cool Run-nings and the hit Fox television series New York Undercover, Malik Yoba has proven himself as a man driven to raise consciousness through the use of his many talents. This ac-tor, musician, activist, educator, inspirational speaker, playwright, entrepreneur and au-thor leaves no stone unturned in his quest to educate others, young people and adults alike on the value of ac-countability, integrity and leadership. Born and raised in New York City, Yoba is not a product of his environ-ment but a progression, an example to others that the same inner city streets that breed ha-tred and violence can give birth to positive ideas and up-ward mobility. Yoba began educat-ing youth when he was considered a youth himself. Realizing at a young age that he had the gift to move others and raise conscious-ness, he was already very involved in mentoring and after school coun-seling by age 16.

Before his career as an actor, Yoba was an educator and very respected among his peers in education and community activism. By age 20, he worked with 13 New York City Pub-lic schools in a program called AIDP (Attendance Improvement Dropout Prevention), in which he assessed students, faculty and parents needs to improve the quality, content and form of education, thereby improv-ing attendance which was presented

to the Board of Education in a book of findings. From the ages of 19 to 24, Yoba was a full time educa-tor and worked with the City Kids Foundation, a NYC based youth leadership organization. By the age of 23 his work had not gone un-noticed and he was appointed vice president of the organization and served from 1991-1993. In 1989, he

co-founded the City Kids Founda-tion branch in Los Angeles. Yoba designed and facilitated workshops on leadership, cultural diversity, community organizing, conflict resolution and self- esteem. He has worked internationally with young people from Johannesburg Second-ary School in South Africa to Rik-ers Island High School and Spaf-ford Detention Center in New York as well as designed and conducted

the first ever youth leader-ship conference in Belize, Central America. Yoba has been recognized by or worked with former Pres-ident Bill Clinton, The Congress of the United States, The Mayor of New York City, NYPD, UNI-CEF, McDonalds Black Achievers, Hale House, The Ethiopian Childrens Fund, The Conference of Black Mayors, The Con-gressional Black Caucus to name a few for his ded-ication to youth.

Yobas love for the arts is constant. Since 1989 he has been in over 25 films including Cop-land, Smoke, Blue in the Face, Hooked Up Harlem Aria, Vote for Me, Ride and Dream-

ing in Black and White, winner of Best Film at the 2003 Phoenix Film Festival, to name a few. In 2005 he starred in the comedy Kids in America a feature, also starring George Wendt, Rosanna Arquette and Nicole Ritchie. That same year he played the recurring character Ice: The Bounty Hunter on the Emmy award-winning comedy Ar-

rested Development for Fox Tele-vision and also co-starred in the Warner Bros. film Criminal oppo-site John C. Rielly and Diego Luna. Yoba, a veteran of 11 network/ca-ble television series or pilots, also starred in TNTs first series Bull (TNT) and NBCs short lived se-ries Kingpin, Raines opposite Jeff Goldblum and he had a recur-ring roles in the 2003-2005 seasons of Girlfriends (UPN) and was a series regular in the F/X Network series, Thief (March 2006) with Andre Braugher and Linda Ham-ilton. In 2007 he starred in Tyler Perrys immensely popular Why Did I Get Married? which led to the sequel Why Did I Get Mar-ried Too?. In 2009 Malik played Commander Ted Shaw on the ABC series Defying Gravity. He also wrote, directed and starred in the BET.com webseries ShopTalk and recently wrapped the indie fea-ture Recalled(2012) and begins production April 2011 on SyFys Alphas w/ David Strathairn slated for July.

Cited by the New York Times Mag-azine as An artist who will most likely influence American culture in the next thirty years (Nov 1994), Yoba is on his way to achiev-ing that prediction. He served as an

arts educator for over 20 years and his theatre company, The Malik Yoba National Theatre (MYNT) Company, creates, acquires, pro-duces and distributes content for the urban theatre market. This is a 25 year old market that is primar-ily African American females, ages 25-55 yrs old. He has co-written two musicals for stage: Whats on The Hearts of Men and Acoustic Chocolate that have been adapted for screen. The MYNT Company is also a proud sponsor of the Hip Hop Theatre Festival and Yoba is one of the partners in the new publication Urban Theatre and Entertainment Magazine, the first magazine to cover the urban theatre market. He has been a guest on Oprah, Charlie Rose, Regis and Kelly, to name a few. He has performed as a musi-cal artist at Carnegie Hall and New Yorks Theatre at Madison Square Garden. He was also co-musical director for the Henson/ABC pro-duced Saturday morning show the CityKids and wrote the theme song for the Jamaican bobsled team in the movie Cool Runnings.

In 1996 Yoba fulfilled a life long dream of being a restaurateur and became a partner in Soul Caf, in NYCs Times Square for nine years until it closed in 2004.

Yobas book, Please Return My Phone Call! Preventing the Demise of Personal and Professional Re-lationships, is THE handbook for business and interpersonal relation-ships that is rapidly challenging the thought processes of students, indi-viduals, business owners and billion dollar corporations as it pertains to interpersonal communication, in-tegrity, accountability, leadership, and proper follow through. This book leaves readers switched on and conscious of their habits and habits of others in business and life. Since February 2006 he has worked with Citrix, Columbia University Film School, and Yale University, Morgans Hotel Group to name a few (see book bio). His message transcends from middle schools (in-stilling the idea of accountability) to corporations (confronting habits that cost companies millions).

PC: How long have you been act-ing?

MY: I have been acting since I was about 5 or 6. Started with school plays and plays I wrote with my siblings at home. Professionally since 1989

PC: Who or what was it that made you want to become an actor?

MY: I wanted to become an actor after I saw Alice In Wonderland off Broadway at age 4

PC: Do you have your own orga-nization/business to help up and coming actors? If not would it be of your interest to start one?

MY: I teach a class called The Working Actor at Long Island University. My goal is to provide professional training for aspiring performers and nationally through The Malik Yoba National Theatre Company.

PC: How many times have you

been turned down for a role in which you auditioned for?

MY: Getting turned down for roles happens way more than actu-ally booking them. I dont have a number but its been a lot. But I have also been blessed to work a lot too. Hence why I believe in starting your own productions!

PC: Do you think in todays society it is easier or harder for an African American to get into the acting industry?

MY: I think that question is old and tired!!! Do for self and dont worry about color or how hard things are. If you really want it and feel purposed to do it, go for it and dont give up until you achieve your dream. Its never too late to succeed but its easy to fail if you give up too early.

PC: How do you feel about play-ing the part of a crooked cop, an abusive husband, or a rapist (What I mean is how pressed are you to

be an actor, if you were even given a script where you would have to play these roles what would you do? Accept the part or turn it down and why)

MY: As a rule of thumb I dont portray roles that demean or hurt women or children. OR at least I try very hard to stick to that!!

PC: What lessons have you learned from acting that you use in your everyday life style?

MY: Acting is not about acting it is about being. Great actors are great students of life and always working to expand their horizons and knowledge base. It also makes you a more interesting person!

PC: What advice would you like to give to todays younger generation?

MY: My advice I always share is what my father always told me Build your own generator so when they turn off the power you still have lights!

Lyric (David Taylor) Detroit, MI Hes always been a fan of hip-hop ever since he was just a little kid. His dad used to bang artist like Redman, Wu-Tang, Big-gie, 2Pac, and Das EFX in his home, while his mother to played art-ist like Lau-ryn Hill and DAngelo so he has al-ways been around good music. After years of be-ing an admir-er of music, at the age of 16, in Febru-ary of 2009 when he was, he bought his first microphone and attempted to write his first song for his girlfriends birthday, singing an R&B track. The song featured two raps by Lyric, gaining positive feedback for the raps but negative for the singing. This gave him the idea to improve his rhymes and start a career as a emcee. He completed 2 mixtapes before exposing his music to anyone. He then posted a song on the web-site Facebook to test his skills against peoples crtiques. He gained a surprising number of positive comments and love for the song. Since then he has released 13 mixtapes and an EP which has over reached over 1,000 downloads of his works. The Detroit emcee is now 18 and ready for anything that comes at him.

    Nanas CornerHello,

    mynameisBrendaLewis,Iam61yearsold.IamawifeofoneGodfearingman,amother,andagrandmother.ButmostimportantlyIamaGodfearingChristian.onthispageIwillbesharingafewthoughtsonlifelearnedlessons.

    LetsTalkAboutTheGospelWhatisthegospel? Whoisthegospelfor? Doesitmeanthesametoeveryone?

If there wasnt a gospel then we couldnt be saved. For Romans 10:9 says that if thou shalt con-fess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from

    dead, thou shall be saved.

The word gospel means; Good news of the death and burial, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ for our sins. The Greek word for gospel is euangelion, which means a reward for doing good.

Overtime it changed to the good news.

Without the gospel how can you witness to others about Jesus, faith, blessings, grace or mercy? Until you are saved and have confessed Jesus as Lord, you cannot share in these benefits. The

gospel includes the death and resurrection, because through his resurrection he is set apart from any other religious leaders death. Jesus Christ rose from the dead to give believers the assurance

of forgiveness, a vital part of the gospel of Christ. So the gospel is both Christs death on the cross and his resurrection from the grave for the sins of mankind. As if its the same for every-one, your walk with Christ is your walk, only you and Christ knows the relationship you have. As God has made all of us different, Im sure what the gospel means to each individual is dif-ferent also. As we open our hearts to accept the Lord, the persons life takes on the form of the

Good News according to the needs and commitment of each Christian.

My question to you; Have you allowed the gospel to take up residence in your life and if so are you sharing the Good News with any one?

Religions are mans search for God; the gospels Gods search for man E. Stanley Jones
