Editor’sNote“New Year - a new chapter, new verse, or just the
same old story ? Ultimately we write it. The choice
is ours.” ― Alex Morritt, Impromptu Scribe
As we close the spectacular 2015, it's time to
reect and relax, retrospect and introspect, rest
and renew. It is time for a new battle ahead. It is
often said that your entire life ashes before your
eyes at the end… The very end! As the year comes to
an end, ashbacks are inevitable. You're about to
nd out in the next few carefully planned and
attempted pages.
The year 2015 had started on a wary note.
Struggles, failures, and sporadic successes – all in a
mash-up. In spite of all this kaleidoscopic phases,
we learnt to live between the moments. We
chanced on happiness to strike a perfect work-life
balance. There were occasions when, we shared
our happiness and festivals with the not-so-lucky
(during DIWALI); also sometimes we managed to
dance our brains off during HARMONY 2015. We
ventured into Nabakalebara 2015 that was both
ambitious and historic in 'epic' proportions – our
eye opener to the glitzy world of Social media. We
celebrated events with great fervor – Women's day,
Foundation day, Independence day, Ganesh
Chaturthi, Raja, Holi, …, and the list doesn't end.
We freaked out during picnics, soaked in the
pleasure of watching movies together, cried during
the wins and losses of Cricket, went green with
Raahgiri (not with envy), won awards and
accolades, gave Germany a glimpse of Kwantify and
a avor of CSM Technologies, all this gloried and
accentuated by winning some prestigious and
heavy contracts this year.
As we close in on the year, it's a mixed feeling that
we have weathered the worst of the storm and the
sun is starting to peep out. Disappointments will be
there of course, setbacks… maybe. But, every dark
cloud has a silver lining… only thing to care is that
the silver lining may actually be a plane ying
through.
Happy reading!!

Sharpen your blade
String your bow
For a new battle in the glade
Awaits us now
But do oil your armor
And shine your shield
Even if, offense is glamour
Caution you must wield
To fight another day…
To win another time…

Cover Story
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
That's a fact that somehow sums up our attitude. Prove me
wrong. How many have actually read through the last issue
and found out the interesting history behind Kwantify?
Mostly as you step into the ofce, two applications that
simultaneously blaze up your screen are Mails and
Kwantify. Something that we do involuntarily – like the air
we breathe.
Have you ever thought how easy life can get inside CSM
campus, if we just utilize Kwantify to the maximum? What
if, we could extrapolate Kwantify to the next level of
Social Intranet? Like physicians say, we use about 2-15% of
our brain potential in a lifetime, similar is the case with
Kwantify. What we know of Kwantify is mere a chunk
before a mountain.
The phrase social intranet has only appeared in recent years (late 2009) to describe an intranet with
social media features.
Social intranets require social media: blogs,
wikis, and user comments, to name a few.
Social media on the intranet is a relatively new
phenomena having only appeared behind the
rewall in the past 4 or 5 years (with the
exception of instant messaging and discussion
forums which have been around, in some form,
since the late 1990s). The Social intranet
basics:
Multiple social media tools
Open opportunity to use social media tools
for most or all employees with intranet
access
Access to social media tools from the
intranet home page
Social options woven into most content
consumption (e.g., user comments,
rating, links to tools, etc. on most page
templates)

What is it – the Social Intranet?
Intranet 2.0: Limitless Possibilities with Kwantify
Improvising Innovations
The original intranet, Intranet 1.0, typically began
as nothing more a welcome page, perhaps a name
and a phone number, and a simple welcome
message. It evolved rapidly to become The Portal
(authorization, authentication, application &
database integration). The trail has lengthened
considerably as of late with the advancement of
social media, and the intranet has made an
evolutionary leap to version 2.0 – the social
intranet.
It should be of no surprise then that social media on
the corporate intranet has jumped in prevalence so
dramatically in the past two years: from nice-to-
have to common-place (if not mandatory).
According to the Social Intranet Study (results from
1,400+ respondent organizations):
The Rise of Social Intranet
75 percent have intranet blogs; 26 percent have
deployed blogs enterprise wide;
65 percent have intranet discussion forums; 26
percent have deployed intranet discussion
forums enterprise wide;
63 percent have intranet instant messaging; 44
percent use instant messaging on their intranets
enterprise wide;
61 percent have intranet wikis; 19 percent use
intranet wikis enterprise wide;
60 percent have intranet user commenting; 32
percent have deployed intranet user commenting
enterprise wide;
As an employee, it brings smile to your face; the
smile in return keeps you engaged. For the
employers, these engaged employees work
harder, are often willing to take on extra
responsibilities and are a positive inuence on
other employees. Unengaged employees
basically serve time and do no more and possibly
less than required.
One of the reasons for the rapid adoption of
social media behind the rewall is not only the
demand, but the cost of deploying these tools:
Intranet 2.0 is cheap.
What is there for you
Employee engagement is a complex problem,
with no silver-bullet solutions. However, social
intranets, while no panacea, can have a real and
positive impact. The research available bares
this out. A 2008 Aberdeen Group Research Brief 4
reported that organizations using blogs, wikis
and social networking tools achieved an average
year-over-year improvement in employee
engagement of 18%, compared with 1% for
organizations that do not use social networking
tools.

It is important to remember, though, that employee
engagement does not equate to annual summer picnics,
holiday parties or even the executive team pushing a pastry
cart around the ofce on Fridays. Rather, high levels of
employee engagement occur when employees feel
respected, feel they can contribute meaningfully, and
when employees feel part of a community at work. The
fundamental nature of a social intranet contributes to this
real and substantive aspect of employee engagement.
Proof of the pudding is in the eating
We know that social intranets by themselves do not solve the problem of low employee morale. But to
reach there, we need to start somewhere.

How to Plan for Intranet 2.0
For a social intranet, key steps in the planning process should include
Overarching plan (purpose, objectives, goals, KPIs, cost benet analysis).
Social media policy (who can do what, when, how, and the rules for doing so).
Technology selection (Kwantify). And the buck ends there.
There! You have already reached the conclusion!
