Diamond Clover Level 6 Service Projects

Tyler Redman, Kate Chapple, Jessica Meadows, and E.J. Milhollan submitted proposals for 2019 projects, and all were approved. Wow, four new Talbot service projects! Most other counties have zero or maybe one proposal per year. As always, we are grateful to volunteer Diamond Clover Project

Specialist Ms. Debbie Urry for providing project guidance. Volunteer Ms. Sharon Pahlman has also provided valuable feedback to members who submit proposals.

Page 7: Talbot County 28577 Mary’s Court, Suite 1 Easton, MD 21601 ... · High school seniors and college students who would like to apply for Maryland 4-H Foundation scholarships must

4-H Seniors, Do You Plan to Submit Diamond Clover Level 6 Proposals this Fall? Let’s Get Them Ready this SPRING for Fall Submission

SEVEN Talbot members completed Level 5 last year, and the most Level 6 proposals we have ever had in one year is four. The process of preparing a level 6 proposal can be a long one. A member needs to come up with an idea, meet with the county Diamond Clover committee for support and feedback, possibly do research to support the project, and get the draft of the proposal in good shape prior to the fall submission deadline. Summer is a busy time, so May is an

excellent time to get the majority of the proposal writing work done. If everyone waits until August or September, there may not be enough time for the committee to get everyone’s proposal prepared for submission!

National Trip Opportunities for 4-H Seniors 4-H seniors, you are eligible to apply for out-of-state trips. Information about the trips is available online at extension.umd.edu/4-h. There are specific deadlines for submission of senior portfolios if you want to apply for a trip, so pay close attention to the deadlines. Congratulations to senior member Karli Abbott who will be attending National 4-H Conference this spring. What an amazing leadership opportunity!

International Exchange Program Opportunities for 4-H Seniors We previously shared information about international exchange opportunities through Maryland 4-H. If you are interested in one of these trips, check the information available through the Maryland 4-H website, extension.umd.edu/4-h. You may also want to talk to Rebekah Lankford about her experiences in Japan.

Animal Science Updates

Ethics: ALWAYS Do the Right Thing! Members who do animal projects, when you enroll in an animal project you agree to abide by the Maryland 4-H Code of Animal Science Ethics. This means that you will treat your animals humanely. If you are working with livestock that will eventually be eaten by people, you also agree to make sure the animals are free of substances such as medicines that might be harmful. Parents and leaders, if your children are working on animal projects please go over the code of ethics with them. The Extension Office can provide you a printed copy of the document.

Animal Project Records Can Help You Organize Your Information There are special animal science project records that you may use instead of the standard 4-H project record. These forms give you space to keep track of important details related to many animal species and are much more useful for animal project members than the generic project record. Find them online: extension.umd.edu/4-h/4-h-program-areas/animal-science-resources.

Maryland Department of Agriculture Animal Regulation Highlights (1) Be sure to carefully read the Maryland Department of Agriculture animal health web

page to make sure you are meeting all animal regulations. You don’t want to arrive at a fair or show and be turned away because you didn’t meet one of the regulations!

Go online to http://mda.maryland.gov/AnimalHealth/Pages/default.aspx. (2) Cattle and swine entering Maryland fairs and shows must have an official Radio

Frequency Identification (RFID) ear tag AND a Maryland 4-H tag. The state is requiring RFID tags for tracking in case of disease outbreaks. RFID tags can be used to trace animals to their points of origin.

(3) Poultry exhibitors must contact Ms. Karla Wieland Cherry at [email protected] or

Page 9: Talbot County 28577 Mary’s Court, Suite 1 Easton, MD 21601 ... · High school seniors and college students who would like to apply for Maryland 4-H Foundation scholarships must

another licensed poultry tester to have your birds tested between June 20 and July 8. NOTE: FOR 2019, PART OF THE TESTING REQUIREMENTS HAS BEEN REMOVED. Ms. Karla will send out an e-mail with details to last year’s poultry show participants.

4-H Animal Ownership Deadlines for Fairs and Shows

If you will be showing 4-H animals at the next county fair, you must own your animals (or have a signed lease agreement if applicable) by the dates listed below. Remember that NOTE: Maryland 4-H allows you lease performance animals such as horses and registered breeding livestock but NOT market animals that are intended to be eaten by people.

January 1 beef and dairy steers May 1 swine, lambs, goats, commercial beef heifers,

commercial breeding sheep June 1 registered heifers, performance animal leases All other ownership deadlines are determined by county fair show rules.

State Fair Market Hogs If you plan to enter hogs in the Maryland State Fair, the 4-H/FFA Market Swine Show will be shown by breed and weights this year. See the online fair book for details.

Animal Science Project Requirements

Required Animal Registration Forms DUE to the 4-H Office o Livestock Registration Forms

If you have cattle, swine, goats, sheep, rabbits, cavies, or poultry as project animals and plan to enter them in 4-H shows this year, you need to have livestock, rabbit/cavy, or poultry registration forms on file at the Extension Office by June 1. For all market swine, cattle, goats, and sheep that you will be entering in 4-H fairs and shows, please fill out as much as you can of the livestock registration form at home. We will fill in the weight and 4-H tag number on tagging day in May.

o Breeding and Performance Animal Leases If you are LEASING an animal such as a dairy cow, the Extension Office needs a signed copy of your lease agreement on file by June 1.

o ID Cards If you have dogs or horses/ponies as project animals and plan to enter them in 4-H shows this year, you need to have ID cards on file with the Extension Office by June 1.

o Where can I find the registration forms and ID cards? Forms are available online at https://extension.umd.edu/4-h/4-h-program-areas/animal-science-resources. Mr. Tom or Ms. Bonnie can also print them for you.

Page 10: Talbot County 28577 Mary’s Court, Suite 1 Easton, MD 21601 ... · High school seniors and college students who would like to apply for Maryland 4-H Foundation scholarships must

o What if I don’t submit a registration form or ID card to the Extension Office? If you DON’T have livestock registration forms and dog/horse ID cards on file, you may be denied the ability to participate in 4-H shows including shows at the regional or state level. We are required to give the state office copies of the forms for 4-H animals for verification at show check-in.

Other Required Animal Health Forms to Keep with You at Fairs/Shows o Certificate of Veterinary Inspection

All livestock that will be entered in fairs and shows must have a valid certificate of veterinary inspection that has been completed by a licensed vet. The certificate is good for 90 days. You MUST have a copy with you at each fair or show.

o Vaccination Records If your animals need vaccinations to be admitted to fairs and shows, they should be vaccinated at least 15 days prior to the first show so that the vaccines have time to take effect. Check the MDA regulations.

o Self-Certification of Animal Health

Even though veterinarians fill out certificates of veterinary inspection, YOU know your animals best. For this reason, you are expected to complete the self-certification of animal health form for species such as livestock, poultry, rabbits and horses. Look over your animals at home right before you load them to take them to a fair or show, and fill out the form. You MUST have a copy of the form with you at each fair or show. IMPORTANT: If your animals show ANY SIGNS OF ILLNESS when you are preparing to take them to a show, LEAVE THEM AT HOME so you don’t risk spreading diseases to other people’s animals!

Miscellaneous Information o Project animals MUST be registered in the member’s name or follow approved leasing

procedures. o 4-H Clovers are NOT permitted to show animals in 4-H fairs and shows. This is a rule

that follows the National 4-H Council policy. (Note: Some OPEN shows allow children of clover age to participate.)

Be Sure to Complete Your Online Animal Husbandry and Quality Assurance Training!

Members who exhibit alpacas, cattle, goats, horses, llamas, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and swine are REQUIRED to take this online training to be eligible to show your animals. Complete the training the first year you work on a new animal project and every year you change age levels (junior to intermediate, intermediate to senior). Juniors do the introductory section. Intermediates and seniors also do the sections for the individual species; any

year you add a new species, you complete the section for that species. Here is the link: http://extension.umd.edu/4-h/4-h-program-areas/animal-science-resources. Complete the training no later than June 15, but please try to get it finished by June 1 because the website may get overloaded the closer we get to the 15th.

Do You Have Animal Project QUESTIONS? Contact Mr. Tom, Ms. Bonnie, or Livestock Coordinator Ms. Susan Behrens with your 4-H livestock questions. Others experts include Ms. Tresa Hutchison (swine, goats, rabbits), Mr. Ryan Snow (dairy). Ms. Cindy Spies or Ms. Justine Spies (beef and sheep), Ms. Karla Wieland-Cherry (poultry and dogs), and Ms. Shannon Dill (horses).

Call to Order and Pledges

Updates from 4-H Council, Ambassadors, and State Council Karli represented Talbot 4-H at the National 4-H Conference and had a great experience. Jason was selected and went to Utah to participate in a Google technology training. Tyler Redman and Brian Milhollan recently earned their Eagle Scout awards.

Old Business • Review of Past Events/Activities

o Regional Public Speaking – The event went more smoothly this year than in previous years. There was a suggestion that the judges in the junior room should write faster next time to speed things up because there was a lot of waiting between presenters.

o Visual Presentations – Everyone thought it went well. o Maryland Day/State Public Speaking – Linda H. said it would help if the

extemporaneous presenters had a place to wait before their time to present. The insect zoo line backs up into the same area where the presenters are. Maybe the insect line could go the opposite way out the door.

o Eastern Shore Spring Show – No Talbot members attended this year. o Tractor Supply Paper Clover – The Hrynko/Brown family was there. Ava did a

demonstration of no-bake cookies. Some people stopped by to see what they were doing. Jason called over a bunch of people and got them to buy birdhouses. He also talked with people about his idea for a Diamond Clover Level 6 project. Mr. Tom was also there for a while one evening.

• Other Old Business? Club Activity Reports • Bay Hundred Blue Crabs (submitted by Roxane Watts and club rep. Jessica Watts)

Updates from January through April. In January and February, Bradley and Jessi worked on their theatre project and performed in the play “All Shook Up” at St. Michaels Middle High School. In February, Jessi attended the Maryland State Awards Gala to receive her Level 5 of the Diamond Clover project and to pick up Bradley’s as he was in rehearsals for “ASU.” There was no official club activity in March. In April, club members met at Tuckahoe State Park for a talk by Tyler Redman on recycling. We then hiked one of the trails for a clean-up.

In May, Bradley performed in the SMMHS Senior Vignettes productions. Jessi received “most intimidating defense” award for her YMCA lacrosse team. Taylor’s hard work this winter with her dogs paid off—winning a “3 pass for Junior HuntTest.” The club met at Claiborne Beach for a cleanup to continue a club project for that community. A picnic table was discussed and is in the works for the Bay side of the beach. Another trip across the Bay is being discussed. The club is to meet June 23 for a meeting and recycling craft.

• Busy Beavers (submitted by club rep. Jason Blades Hrynko) April and May 2019 The Busy Beavers are busy as usual. In April, the Talbot Visual Presentation program was well represented by the Beavers. Ava Brown, Jessica and Abigail Meadows, and Skylar Blades all participated in public speaking at Maryland Day. Josh Hrynko and Autumn and Tyler Redman helped at the State Council Education tables. We had three kids go to Tractor Supply to sell clovers. Jessica Meadows and Tyler Redman are working on their level 6 Diamond Clover projects. Josh and Jason Hrynko and Abigail Meadows are planning their level 6 Diamond Clover projects. We have four people signing up for the Rocks Camp.

Page 14: Talbot County 28577 Mary’s Court, Suite 1 Easton, MD 21601 ... · High school seniors and college students who would like to apply for Maryland 4-H Foundation scholarships must

In May, we had a bake sale at Easton Giant. For Memorial Day, members are assisting with the cemetery placement and removal of United States flags on veterans grave sites. The Branics went to a cemetery in Trappe this past Sunday. Tomorrow flags will be put out at Woodlawn Cemetery. They also need people to pick up the flags after Memorial Day. Planning is underway for a club booth and scrapbook to be entered in the Talbot County Fair. Members are planning their exhibits.

• Busy Beavers Clovers (submitted by Sherye Nickerson and Amanda Kane) Ms. Amanda and Ms. Sherye have been busy recruiting new 4-H’ers for Talbot County. At the end of April they went to the home school vendor fair and spoke to 15 new potential families. The Busy Beavers Clovers have started a unit on bugs! At the last meeting they learned about the parts of an insect and had the chance to make their own bugs. In June, we will continue about bugs and learn more specifically about pollination. They are now meeting at the YMCA.

• Chapel District (submitted by Susan Behrens and Tresa Hutchison)

April 2019 The Chapel District 4-H Club met in April at the Talbot Agriculture and Education Center. Members gave the new livestock pens two coats of paint. This was in preparation of the county fair. Everyone was treated to pizza and then held a regular meeting. One member reported attending the regional public speaking contest. One member has completed the requirements for Junior Leadership at the Rocks. May 2019 The Chapel District 4-H Club hosted the annual tag and weigh in at the Talbot Agriculture and Education Center for livestock that will entered at Talbot County Fair. Members worked on filling out the proper paperwork for entering their livestock. A vet from Mid Shore Veterinary Clinic attended and helped with tagging and paperwork. Mr. Tom pressure washed the wash racks. The racks will be stained in June. Many thanks to Mr. Tom and Ms. Bonnie for his help with the racks and for organizing the county tagging. Ms. Tresa made available craft supplies to the members. These supplies can be used for projects to be entered at the county fair.

• Chesapeake Bay (submitted by Melodie Haufe, Melanie Chapple, and club rep. Sara Chapple) April was a big month for our club. We held our April meeting at the Talbot Extension office where we made candy ornaments for the tree we will be sponsoring at the Festival of Trees in November. Members also presented brochures they made to places they have traveled to or will in the future. Kate Chapple and Ashton Milhollan also competed in Talbot County Visual Arts Public Speaking Contest in

April. Congratulations to Ashton Milhollan for earning Champion (1st place) in the Senior Division.

Several members were also inducted into the Easton High School National Honor Society chapter. Congratulations go to Kate Chapple, EJ Milhollan, Bree Haufe, Billy Haufe, and Andrew Ottey who joined previously inducted member, Emma Chapple. Brian Milhollan was also awarded his Eagle Scout in April for his work with Baywater Animal Rescue. Congratulations, members!

Our club also attended Maryland Day on April 27th, where members, Jack Chapple, McKenna Brach, and Sara Chapple earned a spot to compete in the Maryland State Public Speaking Contest. Jack Chapple was awarded Grand Champion for the Intermediate Radio Spot division! Congratulations! Members took in the University of Maryland campus and all of the wonderful 4-H exhibits on display. It was a beautiful day.

We are immersed in our two club projects, travel and fishing. We will combine the two projects this summer when we travel to Niagara Falls and fish in Canada while we are there. Planning has begun for our trip and many exciting adventures have been planned including zip lining. We have two members working on their Diamond Clover projects. EJ Milhollan held a yard sale to help raise funds for chicken cages that will be utilized during the Talbot County Fair for years to come. Kate Chapple also held a successful cleaning supplies & toiletry drive for her Diamond Clover project. She will be partnering with Willow

• Green Clover (submitted by Carol Frampton and club rep. Elaina Steinly, read by Abigail Meadows) The April monthly meeting of the Green Clover 4-H Club was replaced by the visual presentation program, held by the Green Clovers, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The May monthly meeting of the Green Clover 4-H Club was held on May 13, 2019, at Robins Nest Florist. During the business portion of our meeting, the clovers broke off to do activities while we discussed the results from the regional and state speaking competitions and the visual presentations program. We made plans for our June meeting, which will be hosted by the Lankfords. It will include a barbeque, crafts, and possibly swimming. All upcoming events and deadlines were discussed. Theresa and Emma Jean helped us make flower arrangements. About half of the group did silk arrangements while the others made live plant arrangements.

• Extension Office

Mr. Tom and Ms. Bonnie coordinated major events such as the Achievement Program and Regional Public Speaking in March and prepared materials for Visual Presentations in April. They also worked to help volunteers and members enroll for 2019, created and provided materials for club projects and outreach education, and prepared for livestock tagging. Mr. Tom taught Earth Day elementary school lessons, and he and Ms. Bonnie taught students at Saints Peter and Paul about environmental science careers during the school’s career day. Volunteer Ms. Karen Callahan coordinated a yard sale fundraiser for us on Saturday, May 18 that raised $319 for Talbot 4-H. Thanks, Ms. Karen! Mr. Tom and Ms. Bonnie spent the day promoting 4-H to potential members.

New Business • Talbot 4-H Wants to Form New Clubs This FALL!

The State Office has asked each county 4-H program to try to start new clubs this year. If you know any adults who would like to start a brand new club or an offshoot of an existing club, contact Tom or Bonnie. After graduation, Jessica Meadows will work with Ms. Deb Urry on getting her performing arts club going.

• Special Thanks to Ms. Karen Callahan for Coordinating the 4-H Yard Sale Fundraiser! She did a great job making things run smoothly.
