Induction is a ceremonial declaration of
membership which formally signifies commitment
to and through God, made in the presence and
with the support of the AtSCA community. It is an
affirmation of a prior orientation to the ideals of
authentic Filipino Christianity: love of God and
neighbor through a deep and meaningful prayer
life, service for others, and a responsive pursuit of
truth in societal realities. It is also a promise to a
future orientation: commitment to come to an even
closer relationship with God, to continue respon-
sively discerning His will, and to pursue always a
greater service for others.
i
AtSCA Community
We entered AtSCA from different backgrounds, be it where we came from, our courses, our ideals in life - even different reasons for joining. But something led us to sign up during Recruitment Week, something led us to come to our inter-view schedules, something led us to write that essay. I suppose looking back,
entering was the "easy" part; staying was a lot difficult. But for each and every time I try to recall the moments where I was thinking of making AtSCA my sec-ondary organization, I would remember the faces of the people who have given me a great time, who have made me happy, who have shared themselves to
make me grow as a person. In all my life, I found what it meant to have a real community in AtSCA. And so, remember the faces; with a great community (at least for me), it helped me be more enthusiastic with the activities of the organi-zation, which leads me to the next point...
Ideals of Authentic Filipino Christianity It's further expounded on the Constitutional definition, but it's basically the three pillars of formation: Ignatian Spirituality, Area Apostolate and Social
Awareness. We may have entered AtSCA not knowing what these are (or we may have stayed in AtSCA for a long time before we memorized them), but as some-one discerning for induction, one must not only know them by name, but by heart. It is to be an active Christian in the role of social activism, and in order to
be like this (or if you want be like this), various activities in AtSCA open avenues for you to see the Hand of God in your life, in the people you meet and in the ideals you live by. And so as we progress through the year/s in AtSCA, we slowly see that what we believe in, what we do, what we fight for is true, is meaningful.
Because of that... Commitment to and through God for a Future Orientation We decide to commit what we believe in, what we do and what we fight for. One
thing I realized (or rather, what my predecessor made me realize) was that AtS-CA is not going to be your world, nor mine, nor anybody else's. Someday you will graduate and set out into the world, or rather, you "go down from the hill". And we are left with another world - a world we call reality. We no longer have the
comforts of having constant prayer sessions with a community, no long struc-tured area insertions, no longer a safeguarded rally just outside the Gates of 2.5. And so, as we venture out into this world, somethings we have seen as truth must remain as truth because they are good and help build God's King-
dom on Earth. Through committing to these ideals can they become a reality in the world beyond the walls of Ateneo. But it is not just a commitment to our-selves, but a commitment to God, the One we love so dear. And it is also a com-mitment through God, i.e. an active commitment with the Grace of God, that no
matter where we are, His Grace will touch us to hold dear to our promises.

Mensahe ng mga Tagapamagitan
A yon sa agham, ang induction ay "the process by which
an electrical conductor becomes electrified when near a
charged body, by which a magnetizable body becomes mag-
netized when in a magnetic field or in the magnetic flux set
up by a magnetomotive force, or by which an electromotive
force is produced in a circuit by varying the magnetic field
linked with the circuit." Sa madaling salita, nahahawa dahil
lumalapit.
Nawa'y tuluyan
kayong mapalapit at mahawa kay Kristong ating huwaran at
hantungan.

magmahal at magtaya.
Alalahanin niyong may kasama
Nagmamahal at nananalangin,

Mensahe ng Pangulo ng AtSCA
Mensahe ng Executve Board
My dear AtSCAns,
Today marks what many of you might call a Marriage or a
Baptism. Yes, these are rights of passages signifying a be-
ginning of a new chapter in your lives. Cherish this day for it
commemorates your formation as an AtSCAn, and as a Fili-
pino Christian leader. The road will be long and dark... and
painful. Many times you will be challenged. Many times you
will be disturbed. Even more you will be lost. But remem-
bered that the One who suffered for you, the One who suf-
fered with you and the who will suffer with you. Remember
that God is a God that loves and a God that endures, and a
God that hopes. No matter how bleak your future is, remem-
ber you have faith, hope and love for God. Remember that
we are also with you in your growth as a community who
shares your passion for Growth and Service. We share your
vision in building God's Kingdom. We share in the mission
of being there for one another as brothers and sisters in
Christ.
Congratulations Inductees and may God bless you all.
Patuloy lang, dahil, kahit, para. :)
Nagmamahal,

“Spontaneous Combustion”
With all these reflections coming in like tides of wave at the onset of the
Induction season, I resorted to asking myself about the commitment I
made when I got myself inducted a couple of years ago. I asked myself,
―Who am I to choose Induction for myself, after all?‖ The question sud-
denly retold me the myth about Prometheus, who gave Fire to the
world. Fire is something that is uncontrollable, dangerous, and if not
handled properly could yield to mass destruction.
And yet, Fire has remarked the beginning of an unspoken civilization, a
passage for the dark years of the barbarian to find warmth, food, and
enlightenment. Fire has long been the main icon in symbols like the
torch for wisdom, or the Olympics connoting the first Athenian mara-
thon. And yet, fire has been closely related to the deep fiery pits of hell,
defining eternal tormentation and punishment.
Suggestively, I liken the self to Fire.
With something so great waiting to be unlocked and let loose full poten-
tial, the Fire of self becomes an entity of its own. It has been unknow-
ingly there inside all of us, trying to find a master for a direction to fol-
low. Having been unnoticed and unnourished for a long time, it grows
stubborn and uncontrollable --- and often refuses to gain restriction
and confinement. This makes it hard for us to grasp it, much more to
lead it; and often times we wouldn‘t even notice that we are burning
ourselves out with wild fire. The self, with its worldly nature, may be
paralleled with the dangerous nature of fire. It could easily spread and
cause harm if it is just left lying around with no one putting it on the
tip of a torch, aiming to light up a path with a direction.

TIWALA | TalaAtSCAn Induction Issue
The ―self‖ doesn‘t work alone; it needs something to brace itself from
doing harm and growing uncontrollably. This is where the wisdom of
Character and Principles comes in to play. Just like how early races
emerged into a new civilization using a tiny spark of fire, human wis-
dom has the ability to make something great out of our ordinary abili-
ties by using a strong fist of character and principles to work it up. It
takes a large dose of discipline and mastery of the self to be able to con-
trol such huge entity and to what purpose one would yield it to. Often
times, character and principle are not enough to make the most out of
the fire that we contain. It also takes a right Heart to be able to multiply
it; by aiming it towards other people, and in effect giving them the bene-
fits of the warmth and light of one‘s Fire. These three, I think, are the
sole foundations of the strong civilizations that emerged with Prome-
theus‘ gift to the world.
But of course, these are only idealistic notions of modern day living, and
the virginity of the Fire isn‘t that free from other strings anymore. Like
how the wind can hasten the spreading of fire into a frenzy, outward
forces could also sway the self from its directed goal. Acting on its
worldly nature, it is easy for distractions and procrastination to win over
the control of the self... and it is often so convenient for us that we even
make up excuses to give into it. It is no longer enough to rely merely on
ourselves and our whims for guidance, and we are definitely not to
chastise ourselves with wire braces.
This is where the help from other people --- who in one way or another
has managed to touch the fire of our lives because of genuine concern --
- come in to play. We rely to them in trying times; when we need har-
nessing and are too blinded by the mess made by our mistakes. It takes
the help of people who shares the same character, principle and heart
with you to help you direct your path, and thus the need to surround
yourself with such. A strong helping hand could compensate for the
weak resistance to distractions.

Just like how the fire could yield to something useful or harmful, the
self has the capability to make something good or bad out of its God-
given sparks. But whatever comes out of it, it nevertheless affects its
surrounding environment and how it extends to the community, posing
a moral obligation to the one who owns it.
And this is probably how I would answer my initial question. I choose
Induction because of the fire I have in me, and because I want it to be
directed towards a purpose.
Last night I was planning to compose a list of New Year's resolutions,
having this funny mix of guilt-trips and hormones going on inside of
me. It progressed to about 5 intermediate pads in length, but then it got
pointless. If I really actually attempted to think about writing down eve-
rything that needed to be changed about myself, the whole volume of
Britannica encyclopedia would pale in comparison to its length. I threw
the list to the bin, and lit a candle instead.

Mahirap man hanapin at makapiling ang isang
Marahil, isang panawagang ―magmahal at magmahal pa
Kaniya.

atin.
nating kaharapin.

Inasahan kong magkakaroon ako ng magical moment na tipong masasabi kong, "Wow, I feel like a brand new person now!" Pero hindi
eh.
All the best, Inductees. Saludo ako sa inyong lahat!

At first thought, one might say that the inducted mems are
in AtSCA the wow level. But based on my one year of being
an inducted mem, I can honestly say that it has been a wow
experience but never have i felt being on a different level. I
just kept in mind that I'm just like everyone else, trying to
find God, getting to know Him more. Always remember that
Jesus, our saviour, teacher and Lord, chose to be as much
human as we are and even chose be subject to human rule
and standards and limitations. Nonetheless, He was hum-
ble enough to show us His love. For a God that needs noth-
ing, has everything and is all powerful, He chose to be hum-
ble. For the sake of AtSCA, the people in the areas, our
country and our relationship with God, be humble and be
open to all the love in the world.

Dear Inductees,
Congratulations!
For some of you, today is the start of a new chapter in your
life. Today, you chose to say yes to God‘s call to love. I be-
lieve love, a word we commonly hear from other inducted
members, is the reason why you are making this commit-
ment today. Because of the overflowing love that we are
receiving from God through the people around us, we desire
to share this love to others. As AtSCAns, induction is one of
the avenues where we can concretize this desire but as the
saying goes ―Many are called but few are chosen but in this
case, I think it is more appropriate to say ―Many are called
but few responded‖. All of us are being called by God to love
but most of us ignore this call because of our fears and oth-
er worldly attachments. I salute you Induction batch 2012
because I know that in making this commitment you chose
to face your fears, let go of your attachments and surrender
yourselves to the will of God. Thank you very much for be-
ing open to the formation that AtSCA has given to you and
more importantly, thank you for choosing to love. May this
commitment ignite your passion to share the love that you
have received and may you continue to grow in the love of
God.
Congratulations and welcome to the AtSCA inducted com-
munity.
Love,
Lica

Mensahe ng Ed Soc-Aw Officer
Am I “working for God”? Or am I “Doing God‟s work”?
Sa unang tanong (i.e. Am I ―working for
da(i.e. Am I ―doing God‘s work‖?), tinatanong na natin, ano nga ba ang
kagustuhan Niya?
So, am I “doing God‟s work”?
maari itong tingnan bilang distobro o kaya abala.

gustuhan—nagtaya sila, nagtiwala.
magbabago. Padayon!
Nagmamahal,
Tim

It's been a wild ride. You've gone through many prayer ses-
sions, area insertions and rallies. Being inducted is a very fruit-
ful and heavy commitment to God. Fruitful because you will be
able to experience God in a much concrete form throught the
people around you. A heavy commitment because after going
through the formation given by the organization, it is now your
time to influence and form others as Catholic leaders. Never
forget what you have commited to, as it is a lifelong responsibil-
ity and gift.
Congratulations on being inucted! Keep persevering (patuloy

Mensahe ng Secretary-General
Maligayang pagbati! "What makes you special?"

F our years ago, I attended my first—and second to the last—
Mukha
naman siyang active [sa org].‖ Looking back, I am not anymore even
quite sure if what I thought was really the case—that he waited for
years before finally doing it—but I remember finding it really strange
that he had not done it earlier. I told myself then that that would never
happen to me… but it did.
I prefer not to discuss too many details of my journey with you in this
essay—let us save that for the spontaneous IC‘s and kwentuhan‘s we
will have in the future. To give you a general picture, especially of the
past two years of my life, I went through the entire spectrum of emo-
tions, made the biggest mistakes I could possibly make in college, lost
myself in the process, and came out with realizations that make me
still be tremendously thankful despite all the pain and difficulty I went
through. I wish I could put everything into words. I really do. The over-
whelming experience of grace that I went and am still going through is
just too much to contain. I find myself wanting to share it to people
through whatever way possible.
Four years ago, I felt very hesitant to have myself inducted, doubting
that I will be able to live up to a part of the advocacy of the organiza-
tion. Yes, my faith then was strong; but it wasn‘t strong enough to
make me want to actualize it into actions. Do not get me wrong, I saw
the value in social awareness and helping those who need help. But I
was young and was then still very self-centered. I did not have much to
think about but myself. I felt scared at the thought of committing to
something I felt was not entirely my thing.
Months ago, after exhaustively pursuing the self-centeredness crap,
with the help of some of you guys and several other people, I found my-
self more disturbed and more concerned. I became conscious of my
responsibility to do something for others, especially those who need it
the most. I have personal dreams that I still want to pursue, but even-
tually—even if I do not exactly know how it will unfold—my life will be

dedicated to others and to constantly trying to making life even a wee
bit better for as many people as possible. However, silently, I struggled
a bit with seeing how God plays a role in this plan. But then again, God
does love us, and it is through this love that we are fueled to live. I have
been through quite a lot of difficulties in life—some of you know specif-
ics about that—and when I look back, I realize how He has always been
there. My friends and family have always been there for me; but more
than that, there are just times when I find myself badly needing to lean
on someone and however improbable it is for that to happen at that mo-
ment, something somehow takes place and gives me just what I needed.
I don‘t know. No matter what, all is well, as they say. I realized and now
think that that is, for the most part, because He is there.
To me now, every day is a chance to say yes to two things: one, to see-
ing the grace and love of God everywhere around us, and two, to chan-
nel this love to others. In my journey, I have struggled with being able
to finally do both together and for quite a while now, I have started to
take small successful steps with that. For quite a while now, every day,
I have been deciding to say yes and I will continue to do so.
Induction day will be just one of the many days during which I will say
yes. To be honest, the induction rites will not in any way affect my say-
ing yes on the 28th of January or on the days following that. It will only
concretize it, much like how marriage concretizes commitment and love.
So, sabi nga ni Jeff, why not?

It‟s time I listen to the small voice that says undeserving
as I am, broken as I am, faulty as I am, I am loved.
I want to finally listen to that little voice and trust that de-
spite this overwhelming abyss, this vast uncertainty, I
am not alone.
