What do we need in an Apprentice?• Essential Skill Set Required• Ideally able to drive, if not
then willing to learn a.s.a.p• Basic computer literacy,
can use Word & Excel• Personal Qualities Required• Good team work skills• Honesty & reliability• Flexibility
• Smart appearance• Can handle a DBS check• Can work unsupervised• Willingness to learn• Can deliver a 1st class
customer experience• Has a ‘Can Do’ attitude
Our First Apprentice
• Good for business & team to have a ‘learner’ around, team also learns by sharing their knowledge!• You can shape the skill set of the
apprentice plus they don’t bring other Co’s values to your business• If they learn quickly, they add value to
your business as their first year is subsidised• It can be a halfway house to a permanent
job. We couldn’t afford another FTE driver but workload growing quickly as SME• You give a youngster a real-world
opportunity & develop their skill set - those skills last forever!
Why recruit an APPRENTICE?The process can be a time-consuming from an employers point of view too….
Remuneration – what was our view?• Last year we could have just paid
£2.73/hour #shocking • Apprentice is doing a FT job - 40
hrs/week – proper wage for a proper role – surely ?
• Apprentice needs extensive training over the term of their apprenticeship,
• Induction training• Forklift training and certification• Additional support from SDC with
specific academic goals• Costs of full HGV training and CPC
support need to be considered!
Remuneration – what we actually did!• Harry started £5.00/hour, as he
was 17 y.o. better than £2.73 recommended minimum & better than the £3.79 for an 18 y.o. required by law• …and much better than an
unpaid internship in the ‘professions’• Harry started in Sept 2014 in
May 2015 we increased his wage to £5.50/hour• Harry’s direct apprenticeship
training costs were circa £2500 in total or £208 pcm to us!
Apprentice Outcomes• We wanted our apprentice
to become a FTE of Co from start• Harry became fully
qualified with his HGV Licence in Oct 15• Able to drive HGV by end
Nov, we have taken on board extra insurance costs • Offered and accepted FT
driver role, started on £7 ph Nov 15, with review built in for Jun 16
