rather than a passive listener. • Helps prepare for the exams, quizzes.

Page 4: Taking Notes

• Notes often contain info that generally cannot be found else where (i.e textbooks).

• Notes are often a valuable clue for what instructor thinks is important.

• means that you are working the information and processing in every day

• “to eliminate having to refer to the textbook” (Straker & Kelman, 2007, p. 75).

Now let’s change sentences to ideas . . .

Page 19: Taking Notes

Change dictation into notes:

Studies on worldwide literacy* rates show that almost 80 percent of the world’s population over the age of 15 is now literate. This includes more women than ever before.

*Literacy = ability to read

Page 20: Taking Notes

One way to write this info

Studies ww literacy rt = almost 80 % world pop over 15 yrs now literate

+ grtr # of women than bef

Page 21: Taking Notes

Change dictation into notes:

UNESCO’s study shows a drop in illiteracy from twenty-two and four-tenths percent of the world population in 1995 to twenty and three tenths in 2000.

Page 22: Taking Notes

One way to write this info

UNESCO’s st shows fr 22.4% ww pop in ’95 to 20.3% in 2000

What important information is missing? What is the decrease in?

The LITERACY rate INCREASED – the drop was in the number of people who CANNOT read – the ILLITERACY rate dropped.

Page 23: Taking Notes

Another way to write it.

WW literacy rates

- almost 80% of ww pop 15+ yrs - literate

- more women than bef

- illiteracy 1995 2000 22.4% (ww pop) 20.3%

TAKING NOTES IN CLASSBefore the lecture begins: • Arrive to class on time.• Sit as near to the front of the room as

possible to eliminate distractions. • Be sure to have read assigned readings

before coming to class.• Make a list of questions from the readings to

ask the professor in class. • Review your notes from previous lecture.

Page 27: Taking Notes

TAKING NOTES IN CLASSDuring the lecture:• Have your paper & pencil or pen ready. • Attend all of every class.• Copy everything that instructor writes on the

board, especially the outline. • Be an active listener and pay attention to

instructor’s verbal cues. His choice of words might indicate the importance of the information. For example.., most importantly.., the result is.., finally etc.

• Use your own words in summarizing what instructor is saying.

Page 28: Taking Notes

TAKING NOTES IN CLASS

• Be clear & complete in your notes. Leave a (?) by info that is unclear. Later go back & check with your instructor.

review before next lecture.

RecallColumn Notes Column

Page 30: Taking Notes

Cornell Notes1. Divide the paper vertically by drawing a

line from top to bottom about 2” from the left side of the page.

2. Write on one side of page only. Write student name, course, date & page number at top of each page.

3. During lecture, record the main ideas & concepts on the right side of the page (notes column).

Benefits of Cornell Notes

• Your notes are organized • You review your notes every day• You can quickly and easily identify

key terms and concepts. • Your lecture notes become a study

guide to help you prepare for the exam.

Page 39: Taking Notes

• Try the Cornell Method of taking notes for a few weeks and notice the difference!

• You don’t have to be a genius to take good notes. All that you need is a good work ethic and consistency.

Page 40: Taking Notes
Page 41: Taking Notes
Page 42: Taking Notes

• read the textbook again!• If you take good notes, you may not

have to read it again.• Highly organized notes are crucial!

Page 43: Taking Notes

• One reason for this is a lack of awareness of the fact that the numbers of the elderly have - and will continue to - explode rapidly. The elderly population in the year 2000 was triple that of 1970. By 2025 this figure is expected to double again to be as much as 8 - 10 times the numbers of 1970.
