Director Ian Russell Celebrates 25 Years with the Board

In 1965 Ian Russell was sworn in as a police officer in the city of Toronto. During his 36-year career he served in both Toronto as a senior officer and as Chief of Police in LaSalle, Ontario. About two years into his career Ian joined the Police Credit Union, where he and his wife Penny have been members ever since.

It wasn’t long after he joined the Credit Union that his appreciation for cooperative banking grew. “I started acting as a unit representative with the divisions,” Ian explains. “I was later approached and appointed to the education committee. After which time I decided to run for a position on the Board of Directors with the PCU.” A nomination Ian won and has held for the past 25 years.

“Being on the board has been the most rewarding experience,” Ian shares. “It’s given me the opportunity to meet such a diverse group of people and surround myself with dynamic individuals. The cooperative movement is about community and everyone working together towards a common goal.”

“Being on the board also opened doors for me,” Ian says. “While on the PCU board, I also joined Credit Union Central of Ontario’s board. I was appointed as a director to the Co-Operative Trust Company of Canada, Concentra Financial, Ontario Credit Union Charitable Foundation and the Co-Operators Group.”

“I’m a strong believer in the TEAM philosophy,” Ian explains. “Together Everyone Achieves More. It was even my campaign slogan when I ran for the board in 1997. It’s a simple message but it really is what it all comes down to.” “Being a part of the board is a great way to help others and be a part of team,” Ian shares. “It exposes you to wonderful people, wonderful opportunities and is a great learning experience. You are investing your time and energy into a cause that is important and will have a positive impact on people’s lives and their financial health and stability.”

“I couldn’t have been as involved as I was for as long as I have without the unconditional support of my wife, Penny,” says Ian. “She deserves a medal for encouraging me to be as active as I have been with the Credit Union for all of these years.”

As members of the Police Credit Union for almost 50 years, Ian and Penny know the true value of the credit union movement and the cooperative community. “In my 25 years as an active director with the board,” Ian explains, “I’ve never lost sight of the history of our Credit Union and all that we have achieved.”

Curious about what it takes to become a director? As a member of the Police Credit Union, you have a voice and a say in how your credit union is run. You also have the opportunity to make that voice even stronger by expanding your participation in the democratic process as a member of the Board of Directors.

If you are a champion of the Credit Union cause, an all around community-minded individual and believe in “taking care of our own”, then you may be the perfect candidate for a seat on our Board.

Annually, the members who attend the Annual General Meeting elect the Board of Directors who will then be in charge of the affairs of the Credit Union during the year. Directors are elected for three-year staggered terms, so that at all times a majority of the Board have had one or more years of experience.

Director Gary Leitch

Our Annual General Meeting was held on April 18, 2016 in Toronto. CEO Andy Doak spoke about our continued success in 2015.

He spoke about the Peel Branch staff and how they have been developing and nurturing relationships with other police services and organizations in the west end over the past few years. He publicly recognized Donna Aleksovski and Bess Kominos-Estrela who have been instrumental in all their hard work and efforts in fostering these relationships. He added that as a result of these efforts both the Halton Regional Police Association and the Police Association of Ontario have joined the Police Credit Union family.

Mr. Doak acknowledged retiring board member Gary Rossitter for all his input and insight, both on a personal and professional level, and for his dedication to the credit union over that last 25 years. He wished him and his family success moving forward into retirement.

Mr. Doak also addressed some of the future changes for the Durham Branch. He said that the credit union was looking for a more efficient location to facilitate the needs of our east end members. A review of operations, location, and space utilization concluded that a smaller branch would be more suitable for the business it receives. The sale of the current branch land will result in a significant gain to the reserves and will improve the Credit Union’s capital position.

The Police Credit Union reached another milestone during 2015 as assets exceeded $258 million at year-end, an increase of 4.3% over the previous year.

Here is a just a quick glance over past year:• Members continued to take advantage of the historically low interest rates

on mortgages to either buy a home or make improvements. As a result, total mortgages held by members increased by $9.22 million in 2015.

• Member deposits increased by $10.1 million with Tax-Free Savings Accounts a primary focus of their investments.

• “Rewards membership” continued to be strong on our agenda as we continued to offer members the best prices up front on both loans and deposits in addition to offering the lowest service fees possible

• Developed and enhanced our relationships with existing members, our core Police Services and their Associations

• Developed relationships and provided financial assistance to Ontario Police recruits to attend Ontario Police College

• Enhanced technology to improve the ways our members conduct their day-to-day banking, including online and mobile banking enhancements

Explore Your Risk ToleranceEverybody talks about risk and “risk tolerance.” But how can they be quantified? And how can we determine your individual tolerance for risk?

What it isTo put it simply, risk tolerance is the amount of risk you’re willing to accept when investing. For many investors, risk and risk tolerance are focused on the possibility of losing money.

How it worksPeriodically, we’ll review a series of questions with you to help you explore your individual risk tolerance. A key factor in dealing with risk is time horizon. Long-term investing tends to be less risky because, over time, the general direction of most asset classes is up.

At times, it’s simply prudent to re-evaluate risk tolerance to reach our financial goals. For example, focusing too much on the potential for loss can introduce other investment risks, such as inflation risk, or leave you sitting on the sidelines at times of superior market performance.

With long-term objectives in place, the short-term ups and downs of financial markets don’t matter as much. They’re often described as “speed bumps” on the road to long-term investment success. Keeping that in mind can help ease your risk concerns.

Why it mattersYour risk tolerance affects how receptive you are to decisions involving risk. That’s important to your investment life, because as potential returns rise, so does risk. We can help you explore your personal risk tolerance through a series of questions designed to help determine the risks you’re comfortable with. We can also cultivate a feel for your tolerance as we develop your investment strategy and portfolio.

We’ll pay close attention to how you react to different types of investments and to events such as financial market volatility. Talk to us today.
