How do your child’s eyes look? • Oneeyeseemscrossed,orwanders,
orlooksin,out,up,ordown,especiallywhenchildisillortired.
• Droopyeyelid,coveringpartoftheiris(thecoloredpartoftheeye).
• Oneeyelooksdifferentthantheother.
• Eyesarecrusty,red,watery,orswollen.
How does your child frequently act? • Squints,frowns,rubseyesorblinks
veryoften.
• Avoidseyecontactwithyou.
• Doesnotrecognizefamiliarfaces orobjects.
• Extremelyshy,quietorclingy.
• Staresatbrightlights.
• Difficultywithhandtoeyemovements,orpickingupsmallobjects,suchascereal.
• Holdsobjectsclosetoface.
• Tiltsheadtooneside,orcoversorclosesoneeye,tolookatsomething,suchasatoy.
• Cannotstaystill/attentionwanders.
• Clumsy,bumpsintothings.
• Isnotreachingage-appropriatedevelopmentalmilestones(e.g.,maynotbereaching,crawling,walking).
What can I do if I think my child may not be seeing clearly? 1. Makeanappointmentwitha
pediatricophthalmologistorpediatricoptometristwhoregularlytreatsbabiesandyoungchildren.
2. Findouttherulesofyourchild’shealthinsurancevisionplanandcoverageforglasses.Thesecandifferfromyouradultvisionplan.
3. Understandhowyourchild’svisiontreatment(suchasglasses,oruseofaneyepatch)shouldbeused,beforeyouleavetheeyedoctor’soffice.
4. Sharetheeyedoctorreportwithyourchild’spediatrician,EarlyInterventionSpecialist,anddaycare/preschool.

Childrenwanttolearnabouttheirworld.Healthyvisionhelpsachildtoplay,touch,reach,recognizefamiliarfaces,crawl,walk,understandanddiscover.
Blurryvision(andvisionloss)maycauseachildtostruggletodoactivitiesaseasilyas,oratthesameageas,otherchildren.
IfyourchildisenrolledinEarlyInterventionormayreceiveSpecialEducationservices,itisespeciallyimportanttoknowifyourchildisseeingwiththeirbestpossiblevision.Avisionproblemcanslowtheirphysicaldevelopmentorabilitytolearn.

Forchildren who fail to pass the vision screening and for children diagnosed with neurodevelopmental delay*, proof of a comprehensive eye examinationperformedbyalicensedoptometristorophthalmologistchosenbythechild'sparentorguardianindicating any pertinent diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, recommendation and evidence of follow-up treatment,ifnecessary,shall be provided....

*Diagnosedneurodevelopmentaldelayincludes,butisnotrestrictedto,childrenwith:
• Hearingloss
• Motorabnormalitiessuchascerebralpalsy
• Downsyndrome
• Cognitivedelay
• Autismspectrumdisorders
• Speechdelay
• andothers….
5. Take Action: with any vision concern, or your child does not pass a vision screening, do not delay.
AnnualeyeexamsforchildrenarecoveredbyMassachusettshealthinsurances,oftenatnocost.
Followtheeyedoctor’streatmentplantoensurethebestresultforyourchild.
