As we come to the close of 2013, it is important to reflect on the many accomplish-ments and milestones achieved - with thanks to all of our employees, physicians, volunteers, patient and family representatives and our many partners and stakeholders. Together, you have touched and impacted the lives of thousands of patients/residents/clients throughout the Health Region.

We have so many reasons to celebrate our accomplishments this past year. Staff, physicians, patients and family mem-bers completed 20 Rapid Process Improvement Workshops (RPIWs). 15 senior leaders, directors and physician leaders obtained their Lean Leader Certification.

Hoshin Kanri (Strategic Deployment) is in its third year of implementation throughout the Saskatchewan Healthcare System and we have seen significant improvement in the way our employees and physi-cians are engaged in achieving the Region’s and Province’s strategic priorities.

Through our continuous improvement efforts there have been many areas with significant accomplishments. For example (this is not a comprehensive list for sure):

Medical Unit – improvements with patient rounds, reducing patient waits for routine care, improvements in the discharge planning process;

Emergency Department – improvements in patient flow, development of additional clinical protocols, development of standard work and work standards;

Mental Health and Addictions Services – reducing wait times for new client referral and for appointments for existing patients;

Pharmacy – improvements to the medication distribution process;

Home Care – improved the home care client and nurse experience through reducing indirect nursing time (non-client time); and

Laboratory – decreasing wait times for outpatient laboratory (blood work) visits

Long Term Care – St. Joseph’s Foyer d’Youville implemented flexible breakfasts, meal times for residents.

The New Regional Hospital construction commenced on April 15, 2013 and the progress since then has been remarkable. The Integrated Project Delivery Team is fully committed, along with the Five Hills Health Region Team, to ensure the project remains on time and on budget. A sincere thanks to everyone in ensuring our timelines are met.

Ensuring our patients, clients and residents are afforded and have access to the best possible care in the appropriate environment is consistent with our pillars of Better Health, Better Care, Better Teams and Better Value.

We look forward to continuing our exciting work throughout 2014 with positive energy and contributions from everyone.

I wish you and your loved ones the very best in 2014 and I thank you for your ongoing support and dedication as we continue our journey and our efforts to achieve the best possible care experience and health for those entrusted to our care.

Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Get Your Flu Shot! Countdown is on throughout the Newsletter!

Construction Update Construction is progressing at the new regional hospital site. Within the next weeks we will see the struc-ture closed in to allow for heating throughout the building which will provide a much more reasonable work environment on some of our cold winter days! We are very close to our projected schedule though there has been some delay with the exterior panels taking a bit more time than projected. We continue to progress toward our schedule of completion by December 2014.

New Building On-site What will become the new maintenance building for the new hospital has now been built on site. During the construction phase the building will serve as a lunch room for all the site workers as well as take over as the ‘Big Room’ for all of our Integrated Lean Project Delivery Team meetings.

Changes Underway Now There are many areas we are working in to prepare our move to the new hospital. These changes are by design and are directly related to how we will work in the new hospital. Both MHAS & Therapies services

have began making these kinds of change.

Mental Health and Addictions Because the new hospital will utilize a design concept where staff can work in close proximity to each other to enable collaboration and team work, Mental Health and Addictions staff have reorganized their work areas in the current hospital to learn to work in this type of collaborative environ-ment. Several offices have been converted to team rooms with staff shar-ing office space. This has been a significant change for staff, moving from single offices to a shared workspace, but they are adjusting well and are beginning to experience the benefits of this new arrangement.

Therapies Satellite therapy rooms have been configured on both the Medicine and Surgery wards similar to how ther-apy will be provided in the new hospital and it is having a big impact on the delivery of therapies even now. Less time transporting patients to the main floor therapy gym means more patients can be seen in a day. Check out our LIVE WEBCAM! If you are from out of town or unable to get up to the site of the new hospital, you are now just a few clicks away from seeing current pictures! There is now a live feed at the site of the new hospital. The picture is updated every 15 minutes. Click here or copy and paste to your web browser… http://www.fhhr.ca/NewHospital.htm

Full-Time Family Medicine Residents in FHHR

Update from Residency Program Coordinator, Dr. V. Rininsland

In the Spring of 2012, Five Hills Health Region was approached by the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Medicine to recruit us into their Distributed Medical Education Program. Although originally slated to begin this past July, the College of Medicine’s Postgraduate Training Di-rector, Dr. Anurag Saxena, felt that postponing until July 2014 would be beneficial in our preparation.

We are therefore a little more than half a year away from receiving our first residents. They will be arriving July 1st and will be located in our health region for their full two-year residencies. The goal of the distrib-uted medical education program (DME) is to absorb these locally trained physicians into our community; creating personal and professional bonds which will encourage them to settle locally after their training is complete.

Currently, we are working on curriculum development and will be visited frequently over the next few months by Dr. Tom Smith-Windsor and Dr. Peter Kapusta, who will be delivering valuable Faculty Develop-ment training to our local teaching staff. These sessions will take place in our Medical Education Classroom (the former Physicians’ Lounge in Medical Records), which has recently undergone a facelift and will be outfitted for the DME Program with brand new computers and state-of-the-art videoconferencing equip-ment to be used for various meetings, education sessions and linkages to the province’s other Family Medi-cine Residency Programs during regular Academic Half Days.

With all this work, we’re hoping to recruit and retain these physicians at the end of their residencies, so we ask that you help us in welcoming them and making them feel at home once they’re here! The countdown is on…

Program Coordinator, Dr. Rininsland and

FMR Program Administrator, Nicole Parent

presenting to the FHHR Board in November.

Successful Regional Hospital Open House

Minister of Health Dustin Duncan joined us at the New Regional Hospital Public Open House celebrating the design completion. The event was held on October 9 at Mosaic Place which included 3 mock-up hospital rooms built to scale. In addition, there was completed floor plans, fly-over video, design videos and a sneak peak at the Point of Care Integrated Bedside Terminal. The terminal will allow staff to securely view and up-date patient charts and records while at the bedside. Additionally this terminal will improve the patient experience with instant access to TV, video, phone, music, internet and much more.

The day was a tremendous success with around 1500 people, approximately 400 staff, walking through the displays and speaking with our FHHR team members. Many great conversations were had, while many questions were answered.

Staff who attended the event, entered to win a $200 VISA card! Crystal Bourassa, Medical Laboratory Technologist at MJUH, was the lucky winner!

Five Hills Newest Care Location Taking Shape

The much anticipated Greenfield site in Moose Jaw is taking shape. According to Executive Director of Primary Health Care, Dianne Ferguson, the only steps required before opening the new facility is the hiring of staff. “Hiring Nurse Practitioners has been a challenge but we are planning to open with a ‘soft start’, anticipating that we will be able to add another Nurse Practitioner over time.”

Intended to meet the unplanned, unscheduled and non-emergent health needs through the region, it is anticipated that the service will play a role in lowering the demand on services provided both in the current and future hospital Emergency Department.

In order to provide a more holistic approach to the provision of care, the center will be staffed with Primary Health Care Counselors in addition to the support provided by NP’s and Physicians. “We know many of the people seeking care have both a presenting physical condition and in a growing number of cases, an underlying mental health concern such as depression. We want to be able to make the connection to this form of help in a seamless way for our Patients and we see the presence of these counselors making that a reality.”

8. Who has time to be sick?? Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Get Your Flu Shot

On the weekend of November 16th, something big happened in our health region (besides the Roughriders winning the Western Final)! The Moose Jaw Health Foundation’s 22nd Festival of Trees Gala Event was attended by approximately 430 community members at the Heritage Inn. Over $250,000 was raised to purchase state of the art Booms for our Operating Room theatres in our New Regional Hospital!

An event of this magnitude takes months of planning by the Festival Committee along with many hours of volunteer time to decorate, display and execute the auction, bar service and ensuring an unforgettable

evening is had by those who attend. We are so proud that our region has such dedicated staff and community members who ensure this event runs smoothly.

In a 70 hour period approximately 45 people volunteered over 1300 hours to bring this event to life! 93% of these volunteer hours are contributed by FHHR staff and their families!

The COPD Coast to Coast Challenge, a 21 day walk across Canada, is a competition between other Saskatchewan-based rehab groups. The FHHR Pulmonary Rehabilitation group, supervised by Jared Dormer, Exercise Therapist, submitted a local team named ‘Breath Friends.’ Breath Friends won with a total distance of 5271 km. The team consisted of patients, their family, friends and department co-workers. On a daily basis, each team member tracked their type and length of each exercise. Data was entered and converted into a distance travelled along the Trans Canada highway. The previous Saskatchewan (all SK teams combined) record was 8800 km, which was blown out of the water with a new record of 36,139 km. Courtesy of the Lung Association the team will be enjoy a pizza party and free t-shirts. Congratulations ‘Breath Friends’ Team!!

Sometimes there are patients who, because they suffer from a chronic disease, become so familiar to healthcare staff they become like a family member. Sonny Bird is a Cystic Fibrosis

patient who has become like family to Staff on the Paediatric unit at Moose Jaw Union Hospital. She is 25 years old, and because of her CF has been a frequent visitor for

many years, allowing staff to get to know her as they provide care. To feel like Sonny does on one of her “healthy” days, would probably leave most of us feeling like we were sicker than we ever had been before. She spends about 10 days per month in hospital, needing IV therapy and other interventions to keep her strong enough to wait for a lung transplant.

On November 1, MJUH Paediatric nurses and physiotherapist attended the Cystic Fibrosis Dream of A Diamond, Dream of a Cure Ladies Night gala held at the Delta Hotel in Regina with Sonny as their special guest. Donna Hudson, one of the unit’s nurses, suggested staff purchase tickets to go and take Sonny as their guest. When staff shared their idea with Dr. Mark Brown, who is Sonny’s physician, he offered to sponsor their table.

The evening was beautiful! Everyone enjoyed the music by Codie Prevost and Tenille Arts and the great supper. The speaker for the evening was an 8 year old who has CF – Theresa Weger. At the centre of every table was a necklace by Hillberg & Berk that those at the table could bid on. The MJUH table purchased the necklace and presented it to Sonny at the end of the evening. Most importantly, approximately $22,000 was raised for CF research.

Everyone who took part in the evening believes Sonny really enjoyed herself. A couple days before the event, she was starting to get sick, but persevered despite feeling unwell. She was beautiful in a sparkly dress, with her hair and makeup done, pulling her oxygen tank behind her! It was a treat to spend time with her outside of the hospital setting. She appeared to have wanted to stay when the evening was over, even though she was exhausted from being out.

Thank you to each of the individuals involved in the evening for making it so special for one of the Region’s patients. “The best part of life is not just surviving, but thriving with passion and com-passion and humor and style and generosity and kindness.” Maya Angelou

Dr. Fauzi Ramadan is Senior Medical Officer for FHHR, leading our medical programs/services as well as a full time Internist. Dr. Ramadan has had a 35 year career in healthcare, of which 13 years are with Five Hills as an Internist. Dr. Ramadan has been a member of the current FHHR Senior Leadership Team since 2010.

What brought you to Five Hills Health Region? I did my undergraduate training in Benghazi, Libya. I worked for 1 year in Tripoli Central Hospital as Senior House Officer. I then moved to the UK for my post graduate training. I have worked and studied in many places in the UK. In 1980 I received my Master degree in Clinical Tropical Medicine from the University of London and moved around until I completed my training and became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1986. I worked as a locum consultant in Internal Medicine and Geriatric until 1988. From 1988-1996 I worked as a Consultant Physician and Assistant Professor in the University of Tripoli. The positions I held during this period included Head of Intensive Care Unit in Khadra Hospital Tripoli and Coordinator

of Post-graduate Training of Internal Medicine. I supervised one Master degree and was an examiner for undergraduate and post graduate students.

I came to Ottawa in 1996 and did a fellowship in Echo Cardiography at the Ottawa Heart Institute. My first experience with Canadian Medicine was in 2000 when I came to the Five Hills Health Region for a one month locum and I have been here ever since.

What do you think are the most important personal skills someone must have to be a successful leader? The most important personal skill to have is listening to others. As a physician I listen very carefully to my patients and doing this will help me in solving most of the problem. My philosophy as a leader is to “lead by example”.

What excites you most about the change that is underway in Five Hills Health Region? The Five Hills Health Region is going through major changes and what excites me are the continuous changes taking place in Medical Care, Housekeeping, Medical Records, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dietary, etc.

What part of this change keeps you awake at night? Fear of failing to maintain the continuous improve-ment in everything!!

What are three words that describe YOU? Honest, stubborn, fair

What is the BIGGEST risk you have taken? The biggest risk I have taken is working for 4 years as a member of the physicians looking after Gaddafi. It was a risk to your life to be working with the worst dictator in the 21st century.

From the results of the TalentMap survey many employees indicated they didn’t know who the Senior Leaders were or the scope of their roles. Over the next several editions of the newsletter, we will be introducing each of them to you!

Laurie is the Executive Director of Clinical Services for FHHR, leading our Acute/Emergency and Surgical Service Lines, including MJUH patient care areas: Emergency, Medicine, ICU, Surgery, Day Surgery, Women’s Health, Paediatrics and Dialysis; and Regional Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, Therapies, Pharmacy and Cardiopulmonary Services. Laurie has had a 37 year career in healthcare, of which 24 years are with Five Hills in a number of positions: Casual ICU and Home Care, Acute Care Supervisor, Di-rector of Dialysis. Laurie has been a member of the FHHR Senior Leadership Team since 2008.

What brought you to Five Hills Health Region? I was born and raised in Moose Jaw, graduating from Vanier Collegiate. I graduated with Diploma in Nursing from Kelsey Institute in 1976. My first nursing job was at Providence Hospital from 1976-1977. I then worked 6 years at Yorkton Union Hospital before moving to Lahr, West Germany to work at a military hospital. Coming back to Moose Jaw in 1987, working casual in ICU until 1993 while raising 2 children, Son, Brett and daughter, Tracy. Again moving to work for 2 years in Toronto at a Nursing Home before again returning to Moose Jaw. Since 1995, as my children grew, I expanded my nursing career from casual in ICU to part time supervisor, to part time Director of Dialysis, to full time Executive Director. So, my family ties to Moose Jaw kept bringing me back. My experiences working for other organizations have convinced me that this is the place to be at this time of great opportunity!

What do you think are the most important personal skills some-one must have to be a successful leader? I believe a successful leader must have trust in the team they are leading, and have the courage to stand up and speak to a vision of a better way. A successful leader must be genuine, caring and be ok to be wrong at times. It is also important to bring some fun into the hard work.

What excites you most about the change that is underway in Five Hills Health Region? I am very honoured to be part of this move to fully integrated teams. We all have strengths that will contribute to the best possible

experience for our patients and families, whether it is providing hands on care to our patients or involved in behind the scenes activities.

What part of this change keeps you awake at night? Thinking about the magnitude of the work we are involved in, and how I can support our teams through this change. But I go to sleep knowing that what we are doing is the right thing and as we pull together it will be amazing!

What are three words that describe YOU? Honest, compassionate, dedicated. I think honesty is so important in all relationships, personal and professional!! I feel sad when I hear personal stories about unpleasant experiences in and outside of the healthcare system. And I am very dedicated to the journey we are on to the new hospital and enhanced community services!

What is the BIGGEST risk you have taken? Biggest risk was to apply for this senior leadership position, knowing that I was following in very big foot-steps, and feeling unsure if I could fulfill all the re-sponsibilities that went along with the position.

iPhone or Blackberry? iPhone – easy and fun to use, learning new tricks all the time!

The $8,000 grant will be used to establish a post-partum group as a continuation of services initiated via the “Baby’s Best Start” prenatal support program and will provide ongoing support for the first year of baby's life. Building on established relationships with providers and peers, through hands on experience and education, the women will have the opportunity to develop skills that improve the health and well-being for both themselves and their

children. Picture L-R: Veronica Hawley, Erin Hewitt, Bonnie Nelson
