FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Perhaps the biggest spiritual challenge we face is to nd God in our everyday lives. Loca ng the presence of the Lord in the ordinary circumstances of life can o en seem like nding a needle in a haystack. The Lord Jesus can wear many disguises, and he can frequently be hidden from our view; his message to us can easily be drowned out in the din of our culture. The readings this weekend address this ongoing challenge of detec ng God’s presence and hearing his voice in the fabric of our daily lives. In the rst reading, Elijah the prophet is on the lam, trying to escape the wrath of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, whose false prophets Elijah had exposed and destroyed. Elijah is an exhausted and dispirited fugi ve when he arrives at Mount Horeb, desperately seeking refuge from danger. In his anxiety and panic, Elijah has a hard me nding God in a strong wind that actually shook rocks loose from the mountainside, in an earthquake that had the ground trembling beneath his feet, and in a nearby brush re that threatened to engulf him. But a er all these natural disasters subside, Elijah nds the Lord and hears his voice in a “ ny whispering sound.” Elijah experiences the Lord not in the loud noises and chaos that scares him but in a hushed whisper and a surpassing calm that reassures and guides him.
The gospel passage is the story of Jesus’ disciples traveling in a boat o shore when a squall forms over the water and whips up the wind and waves, tossing the boat to and fro. Suddenly, Jesus appears in the midst of this storm. He is walking on the sea toward his followers. His message is reassuring: “Take courage; it is I; do not be afraid.” Jesus then invites Peter to get out of the boat and walk on the water and meet him. Peter is able to oblige for a short distance but then he panics because of the strong wind and rough surf, and he starts to sink. Jesus saves him, but gently chas ses him for doub ng and having “li le faith.” These two readings help us detect God’s presence and work in our lives, and that is right in the midst of the turbulence of our busyness and trials…as long we have the eyes of faith, listening ears and an abiding trust in his care for us. May the Lord grant us eyes to spot him, ears to hear his voice, minds to grasp his wisdom, and hearts to love and serve him in the week ahead!
News and Notes:
A Year of the Eucharist Re ec on
Here is a beau ful medita on on the Eucharist from Rev. Paul Jerome Keller, OP: “Just as the lover nds it di cult to nd enough of the right words to describe the love burs ng from his or her heart for the beloved, so it is when we begin to comprehend with awe who it is we receive in the holy Eucharist….[As Venerable Louis of Granada writes] Oh! Sacred Pledge of our salva on! Oh! Incomparable Sacri ce! Oh! Vic m of Love! Oh! Bread of Life!...Who can ngly praise you? Who can worthily receive you? Who can love and venerate you as you so deserve?...I cannot extol your marvels as I desire.”
Blessings to all of you in the summer days ahead!
If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel free to introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you in any way, please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again.

YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST TTHE BLESSING CUP
The Blessing Cup is a family tradi on that you can begin in your home. Used as a family symbol, the Blessing Cup can become a sign of solidarity in the family -- oneness in prayer and blessing. Cups can be made, purchased, or found within your home. In any case, they become a true vehicle of God's grace as we rehearse our common des ny and dare to share our hopes
and fears with those we love.
Opening Prayer: We come together as a family, to share in this meal, and we give thanks for the food and drink that will nourish us, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 116: How can I repay the Lord for all the great good done for me? I will raise the cup of salva on, and call on the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people. (h p://www.usccb.org/bible/psalms/116)
Intercessions: For all of our family gathered around this table, that we may grow in faith and love. Lord hear our prayer.
For all those who prepared this family meal, that their hands be blessed for the work they have done. Lord hear our prayer.
For an end to all hunger and that we may share the gi s we have with those in need. Lord hear our prayer.
Collect: Bless us, O Lord, and these thy gi s, which we are about to receive, from thy bounty, through Christ our Lord.
Sharing of the Blessing Cup: Pray together one Our Father as the cup is passed.

Visio Divina Visio divina is La n for divine seeing and is similar to lec o divina but is prac ced with images. In a society that is ever more inundated with images, Visio Divina requires us to slow down, to truly look, and to encounter God’s presence in what we see. Works of art, stained glass windows, icons, even images in nature can be inspira ons to help set your mind to prayer and approach your conversa on with God. It is an invita on to wonder, to see Christ’s presence in all the beauty that surrounds you, and to nd a personal meaning and connec on to something you see on this spiritual journey God has placed you in. Gaze… re ect… respond… and rest in God’s grace and love.
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the
hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy
people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”
