Dear parents,
You may have noticed a reoccurring theme in our newsletters of late -‘RESILIENCE’. The HCCS staff is committed to partnering with you to develop children who are resilient.
‘Resilience is the ability to cope or ‘bounce back’ after encountering negative events, difficult situations, challenges or adversity and return to almost the same level of emotional wellbeing. It is the capacity to respond adaptively to difficult circumstances and still thrive. (Fuller, 1998)
Research says our sense of resilience is affected by the strength of our social connections. Resilient children often feel a strong bond with friends, siblings, parents and other family members, as well as teachers and other people in caregiver roles. They feel protected and believe that they can count on their network to be there for them if needed.
HCCS is a community in which families, children and staff are very connected and there is a STRONG SENSE OF BELONGING. This Friday we have our annual Sports Day. HCCS Primary has 4 Houses that come together to participate, encourage and compete as well as further develop social connections.
This year, to continue to build our sense of community and belonging, we have introduced a House point system. Teachers and other staff are able to allocate children House points for following our HCCS WAY; Look after yourself; Look after each other; and Look after this place. Children may receive a point for being organised, following instructions, caring for others, looking out for each other, picking up rubbish and many more actions that contribute to making HCCS a great place to be.
Every Friday at Assembly, the House Leaders announce the House points to a very excited audience. These points will be added up and a House trophy will be awarded to the winning House at the end of the year.
At the beginning of each year, all Year 7 students are given the opportunity to ‘run’ for House Captain. Students who choose to take up this opportunity present a speech to students in their House from Year 3 – 7 about why they would make a good House Captain and then the students vote on who they think would make the best leader for their House.
Houses have met together a number of times this term and have been led beautifully by our Year 7 House Captains. The House captains have taught their House a ‘war cry’ for Sports Day.
We hope you can come along on Friday to hear their ‘war cries’ and join in with our School community as we work together to develop children who are resilient. We are looking forward to a great day with many opportunities to strengthen our social connections.

Verdun Community Hall Carpark You may, or may not have noticed, the large pipes in the Verdun Community Hall Carpark. Shortly, SA Water and their nominated contractor will commence work (possibly next week) on upgrading these pipes along the Onkaparinga Valley Road, very near to the School.
Whilst it is anticipated that much of the roadwork directly outside of the School grounds will be completed during the April School Holidays, there may be some unavoidable traffic issues until the end of May.
The large pipes in the car park itself will be fenced off by the contractors to keep it safe for our families and students. However, this will impact the amount of car parking spaces available. It will be important that families be aware that they try to economise their car parking space, so that we may be able to accommodate as many cars in the car park as possible. The School will assist with this, by providing car parking attendants when needed. We ask that all families be patient, show restraint and be understanding of this unavoidable situation during this period. Thank you!

to go!
The Year 8 students are again preparing for their Mission Trip to Fiji, leaving on May 19th. The students allocate 13kg in their luggage allowance for gifts to take and give to the Fijian children.
How can YOU help with the 2017 Mission Trip to Fiji? The District School we are visiting has requested readers and puzzles to help their students to read English. Any gifts of educational supplies would be most welcome and also supplies for babies and young children at the 'mothers centre' and orphanages we visit.
children’s books
pencils, pens, textas, crayons, chalk, activity books and other stationery
children’s clothes
indoor games and sporting equipment
If you can help with donating gifts please take them into the Front Office at Verdun or take them to Michelle Bull at the Secondary Campus.
Your thoughtfulness and generosity is appreciated and a great role model for the students.
God bless you all for your help.

The Year 5s have been learning about composition and notation this term. They have each composed their own piece of music in 4/4 time, and have had to present it in written form using the correct rhythms and traditional notation. They are now working on group arrangements of their compositions which will be performed to the class at the end of the term.

Wingfield Waste Management Centre & Christie Walk (Adelaide) In Week 7, the Year 7s went to the Wingfield Waste Management Centre to learn about where our rubbish goes. Did you know that 1050 tonnes are carted away from their site every day?
The Year 7s are learning about how we can live more
SUSTAINABLY and REDUCE our impact on the planet. Currently, globally, humans throw away approximately 448,000,000 tonnes of rubbish every year!
In Week 6, we watched the Pixar movie WALL*E and discussed what we believe the world would be like in 50 years, 100 years and 1000 years.
After our site tour we headed to Christie Walk Eco Village in Adelaide to investigate how a small community lives sustainably in a city. Here we learnt that waste water can be used to irrigate and fertilise garden beds.

Vacation Care is changing!
Starting this APRIL HOLIDAYS, there WILL BE CHANGES to how we run our Vacation Care program.
Due to the increase in numbers and a change to regulations, ON BUSY DAYS, BOTH SERVICES WILL BE OPEN. (ELC and OSHC.) The ELC children will remain in the ELC building. This will allow us to create more age appropriate activities for both ELC and School age children.
To make excursion days financially viable a small fee will now be added on these days; more information about this in the program.
Vacation Care programs and booking forms will be sent to all via email. All booking forms need to filled out and emailed back.
If you have any questions please contact Jacki by phone on 8388 1688 or 0439 898 037 or by email: [email protected]
