Online Ad Campaign in Seattle, Portland and San FranciscoMillions of potential Roseburg visitors were introduced to the joys of vacation in the Land of Umpqua through a June/July online advertising campaign sponsored by the Roseburg Area Chamber Visitors & Convention Bureau, in cooperation with Southern Oregon Visitors Association (SOVA). Using the theme "The Ultimate Road Trip," the three week June/July campaign highlighted Roseburg and other tourism partners throughout Southern Oregon. Online ads directed consumers to campaign websites designed specifically for each market. The website allowed consumers to download discount coupons from Roseburg businesses. Although all traffic figures are not in yet, preliminary figures reveal that the campaign generated more than 14 million impressions and 16,445 visits to campaign websites that featured the Land of Umpqua. In addition, more than 1,000 web visitors viewed online coupons. "This is the second year Roseburg has been a part of this online effort," explains Jean Kurtz the Roseburg Area Chamber VCB director. "This year's campaign generated a 400% increase in visits to campaign websites over prior years. Roseburg’s investment in the campaign netted a return of more than six to one which is extremely important in this tough economy." The Portland campaign (www.southernoregon.org/portland) used banner ads on Yahoo.com, Comcast.com and OregonLive.com. In addition, a radio campaign using five different top-rated radio stations also directed people to the website. The Seattle campaign (www.southernoregon.org/seattle) also used banner ads on various web pages on Yahoo.com and Comcast.com. The San Francisco Bay Area campaign (www.southernoregon.org/bayarea) also involved Yahoo ads, but a special TripAdvisor.com campaign focused the effort on people looking for travel information about Oregon. Online banner ads on the San Francisco Examiner's website (SFexaminer.com) and on a top rated radio station website completed the campaign.

Work In Progress

Certified and Ready for HireThe recent hiring of employees for the opening of Costco confirms the need for employers to be able to quickly and effectively process potential employees from a large pool of applicants. As the economy begins to turn around and local employers start re-hiring professional staff, laborers, trade workers and others, it will be imperative for the company to hire qualified applicants the first time. The need to place competent workers and reduce turnover will be crucial to the success of the company. Over the past year the Oregon Workforce Investment Board has piloted Oregon’s National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). The NCRC is part of a national credentialing program that measures real world job skills. It helps employers identify qualifed candidates for specifc jobs so they can be confident about an individual’s ability to apply essential skills to critical tasks. The NCRC also helps job seekers verify their abilities to employers who are hiring. Oregon’s NCRC helps employers identify workers with the skills needed in 85% of all jobs in the 21st century. Over 16,000 occupations have been researched nationally as part of the NCRC program. Three skills rise to the top as critical in virtually every job: • Applied mathematics • Reading for information • Locating informationThese foundational skills are matched to occupations and the corresponding level of competency recommended. Job seekers receive a certificate based on their score level of successfully completing the test. Local employers are then able to “prefer” a certificate level to expedite hiring, reduce employee turnover and trim training expenses. The NCRC can help local businesses develop more accurate job descriptions, reduce training time and target hiring processes to find the right person for the job the first time. Employers will be able to identify applicants who already have verifiable job skills. As the Douglas County workforce system develops the local use of the NCRC, employer contribution will be invaluable. Members of the statewide and local implementation team will be available to answer questions and provide further details of the NCRC at the chamber’s workforce board quarterly meeting on September 14.

Brief Business History: The United Way idea originated over 100 years ago as a common-sense answer to the problem of providing financial support to local, voluntary social-service agencies throughout America. Since that time, United Way has continued to demonstrate that a single combined campaign for funds is more efficient and successful than a series of separate agency fund drives. Costs are reduced, the giving base is broadened, volunteer time is conserved and agency staffs are free to devote more time to community service rather than to fundraising. Established in 1954, the Greater Douglas United Way is one of more than 2,000 independent and autonomous United Ways. It is one of 800 United Ways that employ at least one full-time staff person to operate a local office year-round. And like all other United Ways, it is lead by volunteers who: 1) serve on a 30-member board of directors, and are legally responsible for the organization’s business affairs; 2) plan and conduct an annual fundraising campaign throughout greater Douglas County; 3) study and evaluate local health and human-care needs; and 4) review member-agencies and establish annual funding levels.

Marketing Niche: Employee campaigns represent the core market of our donor base. We also strive to engage retirees, locally owned businesses, individual donors and corporate donations.

Business Philosophy: We are “Uniting people to meet the human need in our community.”

Industry Trend: With the current economic conditions human service agencies in Douglas County are facing increased need with decreasing funding. Pulling together as a community will be the key to the success of Douglas County, neighbors helping neighbors through tough times.

Why the Greater Douglas United Way joined the Roseburg Area Chamber of Commerce: In the endeavor to create a vital community, the Greater Douglas United Way believes it is imperative that we work with our governmental and for-profit partners to create a strong cohesive business community.

(Winners are selected each month from the Membership Meeting drawing of attending member business cards.) Congratulations to Debbie Young, Finance & Resource Manager.
