Threats During the time of the Indian rebellion of 1857, the Taj

Mahal was defaced by British soldiers and governmentofficials, who chiselled out precious stones and lapislazuli from its walls.

During the India-Pakistan wars of 1965 and1971, scaffoldings were again erected to misleadbomber pilots.

More recent threats have come from environmentalpollution on the banks of Yamuna River including acidrain due to the Mathura Oil Refinery.

The pollution has been turning the Taj Mahal yellow.

To help control the pollution, the Indian governmenthas set up the Taj Trapezium Zone, a 10,400-square-kilometre (4,000 sq mi) area around the monumentwhere strict emissions standards are in place.

Interesting Facts It cost 32 million rupees to build it. The Taj Mahal attracts almost 2 million visitors every year. It has been listed as one of the seven wonders of the new world. Taj Mahal appears pink in the morning, white in the day and changes its

color to golden in the moon light. 2000 elephants were required to transport the marble from Rajasthan. A longstanding myth holds that Shah Jahan planned a mausoleum to be

built in black marble as a Black Taj Mahal across the Yamuna river. Several accounts describe in horrific detail, the deaths, dismemberments

and mutilations which Shah Jahan supposedly inflicted on variousarchitects and craftsmen associated with the tomb.

The Taj Mahal in India is perfectly symmetrical, except for one thing. The

two tombs inside are not equal in size.
