President’s Message Suzanne Webb Hello to all our Tahoe Nevada Members and Friends, I had the great good fortune to attend the Nevada State Con- vention on April 27 (see pic- tures on page 4). Julia Brown from national spoke about the importance of women’s issues in the cur- rent election and also stressed the importance for branches to take out directors’ and officers’ insur- ance and clarified the advantages and disadvantages of having 501c(3) status for non-profit organizations. (Julia was one of the drafters of the legislation that permitted corporations to deduct contributions to 501c(3) corporations.) Nancy Shoemaker from North Carolina discussed how virtual branches work and offered some suggestions about why Nevada might want to establish such a branch. I also had the opportunity to participate in “It’s My Vote” voter registration training funded by an Impact Grant to the state from national. AAUW is stressing the importance of being registered to vote in this coming election because so many women’s issues are at stake. AAUW is particularly focusing on registering new voters—those who are 18 to 31 years old. Each branch is asked to work to get these women registered, regardless of party affiliation. And, not least among the pleasures I experienced was the opportunity to get to know women from the other branches. I think I made some new friends! On another note we are embarking on our new membership year for 2012-13. Please check the membership forms at the end of this newsletter and send in your dues. That way, you won’t have to think about it over the summer! Further, as we near the end of our 2011-12 year we have important events still coming up. This month is our annual business meeting and branch elections. I hope you can attend. As the new board members assume their duties in June, they will be looking for willing mem- bers to head up important committees. I just want to say that it is immensely rewarding to work for our branch, and I want to encourage you to volunteer to organize or help out with special interest groups or whatever you have skills to do that can enhance the AAUW experience for our branch members and friends. In June we award our 2012-13 scholarships which we fund through our participation in Golf Fore Education. This year it takes place on June 24th, so save the date and plan to participate. I can- not emphasize too strongly how important it is to us to support this effort in any way we can — sponsor a hole or a tee, play a round, donate to the auction or participate in the auction! Thank You, Suzanne Webb President Volume 21, Number 9 May 2012 Tahoe Nevada AAUW Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Plans are underway for our June 24, 2012 Tourna-ment. A BIG THANK YOU to those of you who have volunteered to help. A more specific signup list will be available at the May and June meet-ings. Please be thinking about signing up foursomes for the tournament and encouraging donations for prizes at the auction as well as tee and green spon-sors. Please contact Carla or Jan to volunteer to sug-gest donors. We are also in need of a host home for the Friday night VIP party to honor all our donors and sponsors. It would be approx a 2 hour cocktail party that would be catered and a garden or lakeside setting would be most ideal. We would welcome any suggestions or persons to contact. Donors and sponsors already listed are:

Phil and Janice Horan to sponsor #17 tee

Don and Cindy Frei and Frank and Barb Fitz-patrick to sponsor #3 tee

As of this writing, we are pleased to note that our Branch continues to grow! We now have 98 Mem-

bers (including 19 new members/4 dual members) and 13 Friends (7 of who are new). These numbers are certainly a reflection of a strong, convivial group of women dedicated to the enrichment of our com-munity. Because our branch does not meet in June, July and August, and with the close of our fiscal year on June 30, 2012, it is time to renew your annual

membership!*** Please take a few minutes to fill in the Member-ship and/or Friends form attached to this newsletter and bring it together with your check to our May 16 meeting. It is our most sincere hope that every one

of our current members and friends will renew.

*** For those members and friends who joined after March 15, your dues cover the coming July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013 fiscal year.

Outdoor Enthusiasts Group

Lynn Whetstone

The Outdoor Enthusiasts' Group gets together year round to enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, other outdoor activities (and good companionship!) in the beautiful Lake Tahoe area. The group has recently begun its hiking season--

we invite you join us on our outings. We meet at 9:30 AM every Monday (weather permitting) in the lower parking lot of the Village Church at the Mt. Rose Hwy. and McCourry Blvd.; from there we carpool to our hiking/snowshoeing location. Please contact Lynn Whetstone at [email protected] or 831-8608 if you would like to participate and be notified of upcoming outings by email. During the warmer months, there is also a kay-aking group on Wednesday mornings led by Liz Pa-ganelli, which launches from Ski Beach in Incline. We hope to be able to start kayaking in May—please let us know if you would like to join us.

Dinner Cancellation Policy

April’s program, speaker Grant Korgan, was one of the most inspirational many of us have attended. Knowing in advance that everyone would feel the same way, our branch advertised the program in the Bonanza. As a result of the Bonanza article about Grant and because the meeting included the other Tahoe branches, we had more dinner reservations than usual. We confirmed 66 dinners with Crosby’s; how-ever, only 59 people showed up. There were 6 no shows and one person emailed us 1 ½ hours before dinner they wouldn’t be attending. Since we have our meals catered, our branch had to pay for 7 din-ners, a cost to the branch of $182 that cannot now be used for scholarships. For those of you who are new members, and as a reminder for those members who are not new, we need you to contact us 48 hours in advance if you are not going to attend. The caterer needs that amount of time to purchase the food and prepare our meals. We have been reluctant to enforce our branch’s policy of sending bills to those that don’t cancel 48 hours in advance, but we can no longer be indulgent. We understand that plans change, but know that you will receive a call or email requesting a check if you don’t cancel 48 hours in advance. If we haven’t received a check prior to the next month’s meeting, we will not be able to accept your reservation. Un-fortunately, there are some members who have made a habit of cancelling at the last minute or not show-ing up at all. We regret that we have to do this, since the camaraderie is an important aspect of our branch, but our branch cannot afford to subsidize this habit.

Welcome New Member

Dolores Holets A love of the mountains and a strong desire to leave the congestion of Southern Cali-fornia led Dolores, her hus-band Dan, and two children Lauren and Justin to Lake

Tahoe. But it was Dolores' mother who first sug-gested Incline Village to her. “We vacationed in Tahoe for many years at our timeshare at The Ridge in South Shore. One year, my mom and I came for several days alone. During one of our drives around the lake, we decided to take some extra time in Incline. She looked at me and said, ‘Well, if it were me, I would move here.’ That planted the seed. So we made the move in June 1996.” Sixteen years ago, Incline was a very different community then what it is today. Most residents were full-time and there were kids everywhere. Par-ents would start lining up at 5 a.m. to register their children for Kindergarten. “I've been involved with just about everything here...except AAUW,” says Dolores. “IES PTA, IMS Junior Boosters, IHS Boosters, Diamond Peak Ski Team, Star Follies, Hospice Thrift, and CYMBAL to name a few. I worked at Sierra Nevada College in the Develop-ment Department and taught several classes. It has all been wonderful and I cherish the friendships that have developed through years.” Dolores credits AAUW member, Robin Elley, for encouraging her to join. “Robin's son, Jackson, and my son, Justin, were in Kindergarten together and now they are entering their senior year in col-lege. And the boys are still good friends. Jackson was recently in Boston visiting Justin, who attends Berklee College of Music.” Besides traveling and working with her husband Dan, Dolores serves on the board of the Incline Ta-hoe Foundation and takes regular trips out to Wash-ington DC to visit her two-year old grandson, Cam-den, daughter Lauren, and son-in-law, David. “Lauren graduated from IHS in 2000 and UNR in 2004. She and David, who both work in foreign ser-vice, have lived in Japan and Libya...though the ex-perience they had getting evaluated out when the Gaddafi regime fell was not good.”

Volunteers Needed for Volleyball

Margaret Solomon

Volleyball line judging is some-thing that AAUW volunteers to do in order to support girl’s sports at Incline High School. Only home games are judged making the season about 11 or 12 games from the end of September to the end of October. We have had a number of volunteers over the years. Some volunteers have moved away, some went back to work and so on. The result is that last year there were only 3 volunteers besides myself. Please, if you have an interest in supporting the girls in this way let me know. Games are usually played on Tuesday or Friday or Saturday. The games are competitive and fun and it is energizing being around the young people. Hope to hear from you!
