Additional Notes about Journals

1. If <collab> is used to tag a corporate contributor (an organization, team, or group, not individuals), then a collab-type of either “author” or “editor” must be used with it.

2. If an issue is given as a season (e.g., first quarter or Spring), then <season> should be used.

3. If an issue spans multiple months (e.g., May-June) then only the first month should be tagged (i.e., <month>May</month>-June).

4. Because several other reference types (patent and report) require the month to be tagged, always tag the month when it appears in journal references for consistency.

Additional Notes about Books

1. If <collab> is used to tag a corporate contributor (an organization, team, or group, not individuals), then a collab-type of either “author” or “editor” must be used with it.

2. <fpage> is required if there is an <article-title> unless “Chap.” or “Sect.” is present (or “ch.” or “sec.” in JOCN).

CONFERENCE PAPERS OSA will distinguish between two types of conference citations:

1. book: a conference proceeding that does not have any conference details

such as conference location, day, or month 2. confproc: a conference proceeding that contains conference details such

as conference location, day, or month

Follow the decision tree below to determine whether the conference proceeding should be tagged as either book or confproc and whether a confproc should use <source> or <conf-name> (book always uses <source>).

DECISIONTREE

From a tagger's point of view, when s/he needs to make a decision whether to tag a particular citation as a book article or as a conference paper, the decision tree may look as follows:

Is there a conference location? -> Tag as ‘confproc’ ELSE Is there day or month? -> Tag as confproc’ ELSE Tag as ‘book’ (*) Citation to the entire book still can and should be tagged as 'book' -- no warnings will be issued. Once the citation is determined to be 'confproc', how is the tagger to know whether to use <source> or <conf-name>? Is there 'presented at'? If there is, use <conf- name>. ELSE Is there ', in'? If there is, use <source>. ELSE (i.e., the author didn't provide either 'presented at' or ', in'):

Is the title italicized? If it is, use <source>. ELSE Use <conf-name>

Additional Notes about Conference Proceedings

1. If <collab> is used to tag a corporate contributor (an organization, team, or group, not individuals), then a collab-type of either “author” or “editor” must be used with it.

2. The publication-type “meeting” should NEVER be used. 3. The tag <conf-date> should NEVER be used. 4. Because several other reference types (patent and report) require the month and day to be tagged, always tag

the month and day when they appear in conference references for consistency. 5. Proc. SPIE and Proc. IEEE, although they include “Proc.” in the title, should be tagged as a journal. 6. If a conference citation contains a date range, then only tag the start day and month in the range, and leave

the end day and end month untagged (e.g., <day>30</day> <month>May</month>–3 June <year>1989</year>).

7. If a ‘confproc’ or ‘book’ citation contains the word “paper” preceding the paper number tag the number as <fpage @content-type=‘conf-paper’>.
