SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB

Ahoy there, Sportsfishers!

What a great start to the year! Our Club’s star junior’s Tasmin and Toby both won major awards for their skill in Tag & Release events. Well done! See page 4. The Fortescue Tag & Release Double Points weekend was good fun and thank you Cotty for organising it. The weather wasn’t great but was still quite fishable and whilst Cotty’s 110cm Threadfin was fish of the trip. Biggest Barra and most tag points was taken out by myself thanks to a solid effort by Hamish on the net. Hammer dislodged the trebles on a Cottrell Barra earning me a carton in a personal bet with Cottrell for biggest Barra (well done Hamish, I insist you fish with Cotty next year too). See page 3. Feb’s meeting had a fantastic turnout for the Tag & Release + Topwater demonstration. Thanks to Bozzar and RT for sharing their popping, stick-bait and FG knot techniques. The Topwater Tournament saw a good turnout and the weather was great, quite a few fish were caught with Deano, RT and Cotty’s Trevally being standouts. Cotty won with a respectable 112cm GT making him the new leader in the longest trevally for the season. Big thanks to Bozzar and RT for organising the tourney and to West Coast Poppers for sponsoring the event. Don’t forget the Bream and Jack comp’ in March. All competitions for the rest of the year have been set so please lock them into your calendar. See page 11. Tight lines. Scott [Scotty] Medling President NBSFC

El Senor’ Presidente

In a local tragic swimming accident we recently lost NBSFC member and friend Gareth Evans - ‘G’ to his mates. Gareth and his family came to town 12 months ago. G and his partner Sharon competed in the Billfish Shootout as founding members of ‘Team Latte’ along with Trish and James onboard Gorgeous Girl. G was stoked to catch his first Black Marlin and to see his name appear on the Club’s ATR-BillFish challenge leaderboard. On a personal note the first time I met G he sweated it out on a 40 degree day helping me move house whilst he had just finished moving himself into town that very morning. G was one of the „good guys‟‟ taken from us far too young. Our heartfelt condolences go to his partner Sharon and their beautiful girls Tessa and Indee, R.I.P G. Scott.

Cotty‟s Fortescue River Tag & Release Double Points

Camping Weekend

Day 1: Friday night saw a great turn out to camp by the ramp with a good mix of new and used club members present. One nameless punter required a change of PJ’s when the car he tied his swag to roared into life at 3am for a predawn launch.

Q: Cotty, how long is 5 seconds?

“A bloody eternity when Hammer is balancing your un-tagged soon to escape [winning]

Barra on the edge of the friggin net!” Day 2 saw an early start to with President Scotty’s 75cm Barra and Warren Sopp’s 109cm Thready claiming the day’s honours. Rumour has it Scotty’s decky lost 5 Barra on day one, including a real bucket mouth which tail walked in front of the boat sometime after being lost with Carpo’s [I mean the decky’s ] lure still in its mouth. Day 3 conditions were awesome and thankfully no sandflies. Cody and his decky Jacob scored some good Barra. Fat Fingermark also made an appearance and the King Threadfin lead changed 3 times: Bozzar 104cm on Tuesday, Soppy 109cm Saturday then Cotty proving once again that “size does matter” winning with 110cm on Sunday. Overall Champion Tagger went to The Pres’ Scotty with 2 Barra, 2 Jack, a big Fingermark and Biggest Barra at 750cm.

As told to SF’s Editor by Mark ‘Cotty’ Cottrell.

Weigh Master‟s Report

The Annual Capture Challenge

Juniors lead the way! Max Grasso weighed his first ever fish this month and with that capture has a potential ANSA National Sub Junior Sportfishing record. Max battled through a stubborn fight with a 4.23kg Queenfish on 3kg line class. This is a sensational capture for any 5 year old. Chloe and Jessica Hornhardt spent a few days out fishing with their Dad during January as well. They too produced the goods! Jessie weighed 3 fish with the highlight being her 4.20kg Broad Barred Mackerel on 3kg which has landed her a potential ANSA sub junior game fishing record. Jessie’s other 2 captures included a 2.40kg Golden Trevally on 2kg and a 3.24kg Queenfish on 3kg Line Class to bring her total points to 482. Chloe also scored a potential ANSA Broad Barred Mackerel record. Chloe’s 5.72kg BB Mackerel was knocked over on 4kg line class. If approved, this will knock off the record claimed by Toby Mason earlier in the season! Chloe also now has a pending IGFA world record claim after she captured a 1.88kg Double Spot Queenfish during her trip. Although 1.88kg doesn't sound like a big fish, it is certainly a solid fish for this species! Chloe also weighed 2 Golden Trevally's, 2 Queenfish a Gold Spot Trevally and a 11.1kg Narrow Barred Mackerel to kick her total off with 1221 points. Congratulations to Chloe, Jessica and Max! Toby Mason and Tasmin (Tazzy) Kyle have continued to accumulate points since the last report. Toby has added 4 species and 952 points to his ever increasing total. These captures included a Stout Longtom on 1kg, a Red Emperor on 2kg, a Blue Lined Emperor on 3kg and an impressive 11.47kg Common Shovelnose captured on 2kg for 573 points. The Red Emperor and the Common Shovelnose are now leading the season HPS Coral Trout/Lutjanus and the HPS Sportfish other categories respectively. Tazzy tagged her first ever Tiger shark a couple of weeks back whilst on a trip out with her dad (Jason (Piggy) Kyle). This tag has added 500 points to her healthy total and keeps her within range of Toby’s score.

Congratulations to Tazzy on her first Tiger!

As WeighMaster watching young Max Grasso standing next to his first capture was for sure the

highlight of the season for me. I reckon his Dad, Mick looked a bit proud too!

Chloe & Jessica

with their awesome captures. Well done

girls!

SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB

Jason Hornhardt couldn’t let his daughters do all the fishing during their recent trips out! On the same day the girls got their Queenfish, Jas did a sneaky little cast out the back of the boat and hook up a fish for himself on 1 kg line class. He then told the girls to get out of his way and hide up the front whilst he showed them how it was done! I’m pretty sure the story didn't go anything like that but why let the truth get in the way? Jason eventually landed his Queenfish and it pulled the scales down to 3.78kg grabbing him 567 point on Gamefishing tackle and entering him into the top ten in the seasonAnnual Capture Challenge standings. I also got a couple of days out on the water recently and added 4 new species for a total of 901 points. The Kawa Kawa (Mac Tuna) was the best point scorer of the lot with 464 points collected for the 6.19kg fish on 2kg line class. The other fish included a Big Eye Trevally on 3kg, a Chinaman on 3kg and a Painted Blubber-lip on 2kg. What is a Painted Blubber-lip? Good question! We

commonly refer to them as Morwong, Wonga's, Neighbour’s

fish or MIL fish. It took a bit of research to match the scientific name of this fish with the scientific name in the ANSA eligible species list! It’s worth doing a little bit of research before heading out to confirm the common names are also the names used in the ANSA rule book.

Justo’s seven (7) point Capture

Towards the end of the month, Justo had heard a whisper that some captures had been made and that was enough for him to get his line class gear back out. Justo talked his wife into a nice day out on the tinny and managed to score himself another capture. Justin (longtom) Leech presented the scales with a Stout Longtom he captured on 1kg line class. This fish showed us 1.47kg on the scales, an impressive 0.06kgs more than the Stout Longtom he weighed in October of this season. The impressive upgrade has added another 7 points (no, that was not an error in print!) to his total at the top of the leader board. Great capture mate and well done! SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB

G’day Sportsfishers! Bit of long winded report this month, Tags collected from mid- December to mid- Feb to report on. Mark Lucas handed in some new and old tags with a mix of bluewater species and creek species to see him enter the scoreboard. Jacob Crowhurst has been up the local creeks giving the jacks a hiding Toby and Jack had also been up the local creeks tagging some nice jacks, one Mangrove Jack from Toby that measured an impressive 53cm to knock Cotty off for the board for the potential longest Jack annual award. Jack Clarke had a good session up the coast tagging 7 barra and a few jacks with the two Tocus brothers. Damon Bracknell submitted his first lot of tags for the year which included a mixture of Threadfin Salmon, Jacks and some nice Barra from up the coast. Dean lucas had a local session up one of the creeks and managed a couple of Barra and a Thready. Crusty has handed in some more Barramundi tags from a few different trips with also a couple of recaptures from a local creek. We are still chasing up this data so stay tuned. FatBoy and Carpo had a session up a local creek at the end of the month and tagged a mixture of species including Blue Salmon, Jacks and Fingermark. James and Trish tagged some nice Jacks in the New Year up the coast to see Trish enter the scoreboard with a healthy 41cm Jack, the President reports a few Barra were also lost due to FatBoy’s dodgy net skills.

Justo submitted a heap of tags from a few different trips from the local creeks, up and down the coast and a few bluewater species to see his score almost triple and strongly cement his 1

st

position on the leaderboard. Trav Brinkhuis has submitted a thumping Golden Trevally that measured an impressive 98cm for a potential longest trevally annual award.

by Bozzar & RT.

Bozzar had a good session up a local creek on Threadies and Barra with one nice Thready measuring 104cm to see him hold the current potential annual longest Thready award. I managed to get My Old Boy up the creek over the windy Christmas break for a couple of trips and managed a few nice Barra with his first being a cracker at 101cm and Myself also getting one at 101cm to move into the potential annual longest Barra award. Scotty and Carpo tagged a mixture of species during the Fortesque comp which included some Jacks, Barra and Fingermark. Sounds like Carpo did the drinking and Scotty did the catching. Jason Hornhardt has submitted his first tags for the year from a trip with his daughters’ Chloe and Jessica to see them all enter the score board. Some Coral Trout from the islands were tagged along with a NB Mackerel. Cotty handed in some tags from Nov-Jan to see his scores bump up with a mixture of bluewater species and creek species from up and down the coast. One exceptional tag of a King Thready at 1100mm to see him move Bozzar out of the potential longest salmon annual award. Cheers Ryan (RT) Turner & Bozzar. NBSFC TagMasters

NBSFC Tag & Release [TR] rules for Annual TR Challenge Club points

TAGS are a valuable Club resource, issued by the Tag Master at his/her discretion. Their correct use and recording is the responsibility of all Club members participating in the Annual TR Challenge. Club members agree that all tags issued must be accounted for and that any unused tags shall be returned immediately to the Tag Master on request, or when a Club member ceases to participate in the Annual TR Challenge. Tagging information must be submitted to the Tag Master a maximum of 30 days from date of tagging to count for Annual Tag & Release Challenge Club points. Except June tagging information which must be submitted by 1

st July.

Members who wish to claim Annual Capture Challenge [CC] Points for a tagged species instead of TR Points. Must clearly write “Capture” on the address side of the correctly completed tag card submitted to the Tag Master. Species indicated with a “*” should be tagged with NSW Department of Primary Industries [DPI - Fisheries] tags only. DO NOT use ANSA WA tags on these species. There is no restriction on gear type used to catch a fish to be tagged i.e. a 100lb hand line is acceptable for tagging, this is to promote the maximum chance of fish survival. It is recommended to tag fish under the “minimum length”, as long as the fish has a good chance of survival. The minimum length is only relevant for Annual TR Challenge Club points. Both overall & fork length must be noted on tagging sheets for Blue & King Threadfin Salmon. ++ When tagging Black Jewfish it is important that a correct identification is made. DO NOT confuse Juvenile Black Jewfish with adult “Little Jewfish” [Johnius Borrnesis] which only grow to ~60cm. Little Jewfish are not to be tagged. See detail this page.
