EDITORIALWith the 2006 Geneva Grand Prix d’Horlogerie award-winning TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 360 mechanical chronograph accurate to the 1/100th of a second, and the late-2007 launch of the Link Calibre S electro-mechanical chronograph accurate to the 1/100th of a second, TAG Heuer confi rms its innovation leadership and its unrivalled engineering capacity to design and manufacture the most precise mechanical and electro-mechanical chronograph movements in the world. These two revolutionary and complex movements (watchmaking masters rightly consider chronographs to be the most sophis-ticated watchmaking complications) are made of more than 250 components and are manually assembled in TAG Heuer workshops in La Chaux-de-Fondsand Sion. The addition of these two watchmaking breakthroughs to its arsenal makes TAG Heuer the only luxury watchmaking brand capable of manufacturing sophisticated chronographs that are accurate to 1/10th, 1/100th and 1/1,000th of a second. In timekeeping, TAG Heuer goes even further, mastering 1/10,000th of a second. This feat is applied to many prestigious sport events, such as the Race of Champions organized this year in Wembley, which brings together the best drivers of all major world disciplines for a unique motor racing event. Motor racing and GT cars have always been a source of inspiration for TAG Heuer watch masters and engineers. Partnered with McLaren since 1985, TAG Heuer is also the Offi cial chronograph of the Mercedes McLaren SLR roadcar, probably the world’s most advanced GT dream machine ever developed. These close collaborations have allowed TAG Heuer to seize hold of new ideas, incor-porate cutting-edge technologies into the manufacture of avant-garde watches and chronographs. THE WORLD’S ONLY 1/100TH OF A SECOND MECHANICAL WRIST CHRONOGRAPH

The fi rst mechanical wrist chronograph movement to measure and display time to 1/100th of a second, the TAG Heuer Calibre 360 houses a specially engine-ered balance wheel that oscillates at an astonishing 360,000 beats per hour, making it 10 times faster than any other chronograph—a rate until now conside-red impossible.The result of TAG Heuer’s historic savoir-faire in the demanding fi eld of high-pre-cision timekeeping, the triple-patented chronograph combines a mechanical, stop-watch inspired counter, similar to the one on the 1916 Micrograph but miniaturized to fi t a wristwatch, with a COSC-certifi ed auto-matic hours-minutes-seconds movement.

A single crown, turned clockwise, operates the barrel of the manual chronograph, which, even with its incredibly high fre-quency, has a power reserve of 100 minu-tes. Turned anti-clockwise, it rewinds the automatic movement of the watch, which operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibra-tions per hour and has a power reserve of 42 hours.Two exciting new timepieces bearing the Calibre 360’s revolutionary technology have been developed:

Winner of a 2007 Red Dot Design Award and a 2007 iF Design Award, the effortles-sly easy-to-read Monaco Calibre 360 LS (Linear Second) uses meticulously hand-fi nished engine bridges to reveal its over-sized 1/100th of a second chronograph counter, embedded 15-minute chrono-graph counter at 9 o’clock, embedded 100-minute power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, and linear second indicator at 3 o’clock. True to the square-faced original Monaco yet resolutely contemporary, the stunning design is highlighted by two rec-tangular sapphire crystal windows in the caseback, through which can be seen the Calibre 360 LS’s delicate movement, beautifully decorated with Côtes de Genève.

This remarkable innovation developed, patented, and manufactured by TAG Heuer, challenges the traditional fundamentals of watchmaking, offering an entirely new way to measure andread time based on a system of bi-

directional hands that are mechanically independent yet synchronized, to offer precision, practicality and elegance.It combines the sophistication of me-chanical watchmaking with the ultimate precision of quartz with no fewer than 250 components and 5 high-perfor-mance bi-directional engines capableof twice the torque of conventional timepiece engines. For the fi rst time in several decades, TAG Heuer has created

a new generation of “hybrid” electro-mechanical movements in the purest avant-garde tradition of the brand, and giving rise to the most elegant chrono-graph architecture ever conceived in watchmaking. Inspired by automotive dashboard counters, the Calibre S fea-tures two retrograde counters placed at 4:30 and 7:30 to display information ranging from the perpetual calendar to 1/10th and 1/100th of a second.

This unique architecture enables the central hour, minute and second hands to be used for chronograph timing with a simple press on the crown. Reading of the chronograph time has been made intuitive and quick, and the dial simple and elegant without the three counters on traditional chronographs.

Celebrating 20 years of success, the Link - TAG Heuer’s superlative sports and elegance watch series - now incorporates the ground-breaking Calibre S movement. With its 42mm case and distinctive dashboard-inspired counters, the elegant, high-performance chronograph fuses intuitive functions with a streamlined sen-sibility at the cutting-edge of avant-garde design. Two semi-circular counters either display a perpetual “retrograde” calendar on the watch mode (no need to change the date until 2099) and 1/100th second accuracy in Chronograph mode.

In Chronograph mode, simple, additional and split timing functions are available in easy-to-read displays. AQUARACER CALIBRE S TAG Heuer’s longstanding involvement in diving and com-petitive sailing makes it the expert in high-performance, water-inspired timepieces, uniquely capable of transforming technically sophisticated timepieces into stylish must-haves. The Aquaracer Calibre S embodies this perfectly. Based on the famous Aquaracer series, fi rst introduced in 1982, this prestigious new upgrade was developed and tes-ted by China Team, a challenger for the America’s Cup 2007.

Outfi tted with the electro-mechanical Calibre S movement, it uses the same central hands to show actual and measured time. It also sports a countdown mode with an automatic Chronograph start, making it a professional instrument: press twice on the crown to enter the Countdown mode (Regatta), Chronograph mode will activate automatically by the end of the countdown, and fi nally the elapsed time of the race is displayed intuitively and elegantly on the blue or anthracite dial.

THROWING AWAY THE KEY...

Back then, all watches were wound with a key. In 1867, the year Edouard Heuer relo-cated his workshop to Bienne, he chan-ged the course of watchmaking history forever with his fi rst patented inventionin 1869: a keyless, crown-operated winding system. A huge success at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna, this new generation of timepieces was soon among the most coveted in the world. When powerful Ame-rican manufacturers moved aggressively into the European market, Edouard Heuer responded by pushing through innova-tions in every area of design, engineering

and manufacturing, thus helping to make the Swiss watchmaking industry the world leader that it remains till this day.

Sporting competition was expanding rapidly − on water, grass, cinder running tracks and roads. Measuring time accu-rately became increasingly important. Edouard Heuer was well aware of the opportunities and, in 1882, become one of the fi rst to produce pocket chronographs in high volumes.In 1887, Edouard Heuer patented one of the most important innovations in wat-chmaking: the famous oscillating pinion,

used till this day by leading manufac-turers in the production of mechanical chronographs. With this breakthrough invention, TAG Heuer became the refe-rence standard in chronographs and timing instruments for high-level sports. In 1889, at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, the company received a silver medal for his pocket chronograph col-lection. By the time of his death in 1892, Heuer’s creative vision and passion for innovation had laid the foundation for a watchmaking dynasty − one that was to make an indelible mark on the next cen-tury of dramatic change.

In 1911, the company introduced Time of Trip, the fi rst dashboard chronograph. Eight years later, the Zeppelin ZR III relied on it for its epic 8,106 km trip over North America, and in 1929, Hugo Eckener had it on board for his round-the-world trip in the Graf Zeppelin. In 1916, Charles-Auguste Heuer launched the Micrograph, the fi rst instruments to measure time to 1/100th of a second. This revolutionary invention, which set a new benchmark for high-precision timekeeping, was the basis for the pocket chronographs chosen as the offi cial timing instruments of the Olympic Games in Antwerp (1920), Paris (1924) and Amsterdam (1928). Thousands of Micrographs were produced over the next six decades. The fi rst alpine slalom and downhill ski races were timed by the company, starting in 1928. In 1933, Autavia (contraction of Automobile and Aviation), the fi rst on-board stopwatch for cars and airplanes was launched. That same year saw the launch of the Hervue, a watch with a power reserve of 8 days. These two instruments were often moun-ted together on a chrome base and fi xed

to the dashboard of a car. Heuer’s lea-ding-edge chronographs soon began to be seen on the wrists of celebrity clients around the world, including Harry S Tru-man, General Eisenhower, Henry Ford, Prince William of Sweden, and King Bhu-mibol of Thailand. In 1948, the company introduced its Auto-Graph, a wrist chrono-graph for air pilots with a tachymetre and an easy-to-operate counter for measu-ring elapsed time and fuel consumption. From racing tracks to sea-lanes, inno-vation continues. In 1950, the company unveiled its patented Mareograph, a unique sailing chronograph derived from the earlier Solunar, which had allowed fi shermen to know when fi sh were fee-ding. Called the Seafarer in the USA, the new chronograph was the fi rst with a tide indicator and chronograph functions for sailing races. Skippers also welcomed the Seafarer’s 5-minute countdown function. This was followed by the Yacht-Timer, a fully water-resistant chronograph whose race-start functions were controlled by a single pushbutton.

In 1963, Jack W. Heuer turned his creative focus to the world of the cinema, designing the Film Master, which measured film sequences in 16mm and 35mm. The following year, he returned his attention to his domi-nant sports passion of motor racing with the inaugural launch of the legen-dary Carrera. A tribute to professional motor racing’s most grueling road race, the legendary Carrera Panamericana Mexico of the 1950s, this stunning piece of unconventional watchmaking technology was worn by countless race drivers, and remains, in its latest incarnation, one of the most popular, timeless and iconic creations.In 1966, Jack W. Heuer stunned the watchmaking world yet again, this time by introducing the Microtimer, the world’s first miniaturized electro-nic timing instrument accurate to an extraordinary 1/1,000th of a second.

A SQUARE WATER-RESISTANT CASE

In 1969, the avant-garde Chronomatic Calibre 11 movement was introduced. The first chronograph movement with an automatic microrotor mechanism, it would drive the mythic Monaco, the original automatic chronograph with a square, water-resistant case. The Monaco was immortalized on Steve

McQueen’s wrist in the 1970 racing film, Le Mans. In 1969, Jo Siffert, Steve McQueen’s friend and racing mentor, signed on as a brand ambas-sador, becoming the first racecar dri-ver sponsored by a watch company.

TIMING A LEGENDARY CAR

In 1971, Enzo Ferrari asked Clay Regazzoni, Swiss winner of the Italian Grand Prix, to find timing instruments for his track at Fiorano. The brand’s technology was ideally suited to the task, as demonstrated by the Le Mans Centigraph, which measured time to 1/1,000th of a second.

In 1955, Heuer unveiled the Twin-Time, a GMT model that simultaneously displayed two time zones. In 1958, the company presented its famous on-board timer, the RallyMaster, consisting of Master Time (8-day clock) and a Monte Carlo (12-hour stopwatch). The following year, Hubert Heuer and his nephew, Jack William Heuer (son of Charles-Edouard), set up Heuer Time Corporation, a new American subsidiary based in New York. One year later, Jack W. As Ferrari’s Official Timekeeper from 1971 to 1979, the brand played a key role in the team’s unprecedented string of world championship victo-ries, and saw its name linked to such Ferrari legends as Gilles Villeneuve, Niki Lauda, and Jody Schekter.Meanwhile, in Bienne, the innovations and patents kept coming. In 1972, the Microsplit 800 was unveiled, the first pocket quartz stopwatch 99.999% accurate to 1/100th of a second. In 1975, Paul Newman started a fashion for the Chronosplit, the world’s fi rst quartz wrist chronograph with a double digital display - LED and LCD - and accurate to 1/100th of a second. Barely two years later, the company presented the world’s fi rst digital-analog chronograph, the Manhattan Chronosplit GMT, the forerunner of the Kirium Formula 1 chronograph.

TAG Heuer was the Offi cial Supplier of chronographs to the Intrepid team, which won the America’s Cup in 1967. In 1995, TAG Heuer was part of Chris Dick-son’s challenge in the Louis Vuitton Cup, which reached the semi-fi nals.In 1984, Mike Birch in his Formula TAG, one of the very fi rst kevlar and carbon-fi ber catamarans, broke the world record for the greatest distance sailed in 24 hours. 1. WATER-RESISTANCE

A sports watch, and indeed any contem-porary watch, must be water-resistant to protect the mechanical or quartz movement inside, and ensure watch functions. Water-resistance helps to reduce the need for servicing by exten-ding the life of the movement. TAG Heuer carries out real water-resistance tests on 100% of its production, in water under pressure. Each watch is individually checked after testing. When the wat-ches are pre-heated and a drop of cold water is placed on the glass, no conden-sation must appear. TAG Heuer also produces professional diving watches such as the Aquagraph chronograph. This particular model must meet all the specifi cations of the Diving Watch NIHS 92-11 standard, and must then success-fully pass the pushbutton function test. To manufacture these buttons, which are waterproof and operational down to 500 meters, special test equipment had to be designed and made for TAG Heuer.

2. RESISTANCE TO U. V. AGEING.

Heat and light often have an adverse effect on plastic materials, coatings (varnishes), and leather. The aesthetic and physical properties of certain com-ponents in TAG Heuer watches can be affected by these invisible agents. To avoid this, the quality laboratory carries

out stringent tests on the materials used to ensure their long-term stability. Parts remain in a closed receptacle for three days and are exposed to light of equiva-lent intensity to the full summer sun on the Mediterranean coast. In order to be certifi ed suitable, they must not show the slightest effect. These tests enable TAG Heuer to guarantee using only high viability materials so that its watches can accompany their owners in all lati-tudes and in all seasons.

3. RESISTANCE TO EXTREME TEMPERATURES

If a watch is exposed to the sun for long periods, its case can reach a temperature of more than 40°C. In winter, when skiing, it can experience negative temperatures. To ensure that the watch continues to operate perfectly in temperatures ranging from –0°C to +50°C, TAG Heuer tests individual components and complete watches in a heated vessel. This makes it possible to verify the running and continued accuracy of timepieces used in extreme sports such as parachuting, climbing or expeditions in the tropics. To ensure that its watches are completely fl awless, TAG Heuer also conducts a test that reproduces tropical environments. To get close to real conditions, fi tted parts spend 14 days in a closed contai-ner with air maintained at +40 °C and 90 % relative humidity. No trace of corrosion nor any signifi cant time variation must be noticeable after this ordeal.

4. RESISTANCE TO THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT

A watch being worn is a watch that is alive. On the wrist it is forced to come into contact with corrosive agents that could affect the watch or its attractive-ness. The chlorine in pools, the sulfur in the air of polluted cities, not to mention perspiration or sea water can, on their own or in conjunction, attack the mate-rials in a watch or reduce the mobility of some of its components. To prevent this, TAG Heuer carries out a number of tests on watch cases, crowns, metal brace-lets, leather and rubber straps in order to verify the neutrality of the materials that come into contact with the skin. Only those that meet these strict requi-rements are accepted.

5. TRACTION RESISTANCE

Over time, putting on and taking off a watch has an effect on the buckle of a leather strap or the clasp of a metal bracelet. When a watch accidentally snags on an exterior element, traction is applied to the strap or bracelet that can seriously damage its attachment pins. To avoid this, TAG Heuer carries out a series of tests that submit the clasps and ton-gue buckles to a traction of 15-20 kg for 5000 cycles. These items are then sub-

jected to torsion under tension. No part of the strap or bracelet must show any deformation or tearing if it is to be used in the manufacture of TAG Heuer watches.

6. VIBRATION RESISTANCE

In many sports, such as mountain biking, Formula 1 or karting, wrists are subjected to very substantial vibration. And in everyday life, on a motorbike for example, the wrists and therefore the watch are regularly subjected to brief repetitive movements. To confi rm that this does

not have any effect on the accuracy of the watch, its reliability or integrity, TAG Heuer has developed a machine able to reproduce a higher level of vibration than timepieces are likely to experience on the wrist of a top-level sportsman. The intensity of vibration is far greater than a human being can withstand and enables the technical solutions to be tested to the extreme. This random-movement test must not alter the working of the timepiece or components, such as the strap or the screws, or reveal any sign of weakness.

7. RESISTANCE TO DROPPING It is rare for a watch never to be dropped. All it takes is a slip of the fi ngers when winding, or a moment’s inattention. Taking care is not enough to prevent any accidents in the life of a watch. When playing a sport, a fall on hard snow

when skiing and... it’s an impact, quick, hard, unstoppable. TAG Heuer carries out shock test in the laboratory on all its watches using a specially calibrated instrument. Every watch that leaves the workshop has been designed to resist a fall of one meter onto a surface as hard as an oak parquet fl oor. Because this is a very common type of accident, the test is carried out twice: fi rst with the watch fl at, the glass hitting the fl oor, and a second time with the watch set on its side, crown uppermost. Of course, the movement must continue to operate as before and the case must show no trace of damage.

8. IMPACT RESISTANCE

In normal life nobody is totally static. Even worse, when you play a game it is easy to forget that you are wearing a watch at all. A sudden movement and the watch can hit a wall, as in squash, or be hit by a hard fast-moving object such as a baseball. To ensure that a watch that the owner nor-mally looks after carefully, does not suf-fer from such an event, TAG Heuer carries out severe impact tests with machines

specially designed to check that the com-ponents can withstand the shock waves associated with heavy impacts. After testing, the watch must not show any mechanical damage.

9. RESISTANCE TO AGEING

All the functions of a watch are submitted for ageing tests that faithfully reproduce not only the normal hand actions of the wearer but also accidental incidents. The

turning bezel, the crown and the pushbut-tons undergo 5,000 function cycles, which equates to several years of use in normal conditions. The machine used to simulate the ageing process concerning pushbutton functions is shown above.

10. ABRASION RESISTANCE

TAG Heuer studies the behavior of its watches down to the smallest details. They are technical instruments, worn in all situations and ready to accompany their owners through all the adventu-res of life. To test its models over a long period, TAG Heuer conducts abrasion tests on cases and bracelets. This cali-brated wear, called “Polyservice”, ena-bles the treatment of a watch or metal bracelet to be modifi ed, if necessary, to make it less prone to ageing.

11. ANALYSIS OF METALS AND METAL COATINGS

The alloys or decorative coatings in pre-cious metals are systematically control-led. Fluorescent X analyzes the precious element content (carats) and checks the thickness of the coatings. These tests are carried out at random but are also combined to obtain a better insight into the real conditions that a watch expe-riences. For example, imagine an athlete who takes a bath after a mountain-bike race. These tests simulate the shocks and sweat and check the water-resistance.

INTERNATIONAL GUARANTEE

TAG Heuer watches are at the cutting edge of technology which the company backs with an international warranty against any defect in operation or manu-facture for a period of two years. They have all been individually proven in more than 60 tests, and are further subjected to numerous quality controls during pro-duction. In addition, TAG Heuer regularly conducts tests on individual compo-nents produced by suppliers. The aim is to achieve fl awless quality at all stages of production. The identifi cation number engraved on the back of every watch case is vital and must be kept intact. It is confi rmation that the fi nished watch fully complies with TAG Heuer’s quality criteria and is the essential reference required to benefi t from the international warranty.

CALIBRE S FUNCTIONSThe Calibre S, a movement developed and patented by TAG Heuer, revolutionizes the world of chronographs with a new simple and intuitive way to read measured times.

This chronograph operates in 2 modes:

When the countdown is completed, the chronograph function starts automati-cally and the central hands start moving clockwise. The left counter indicates “CHRONO”. The central hands indicate the time measured by the chronograph, with 1/10th of a second displayed on the right counter.
