Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA) is the main governmental institution, responsible for implementation of innovation policy in Lithuania. Briefly, it is a national innovation agency.

MITA was established on 4th of May in 2010 with the aim to foster business and science cooperation and to create a friendly environment for business needs and innovation. These goals are foreseen

in national Innovation Strategy for the year 2010-2020, approved by Lithuanian Government. Two ministries: the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Education and Science are the main founders of MITA. The activities of MITA are jointly supported and funded by them.

The main activity is the coordination of national activities and international programmes (HORIZON2020, EUREKA,

EUROSTARS) of research, technological development and innovation and other financial schemes (innovation vouchers, protection of industrial property rights).

Since 2011, Lithuania has been a member of TAFTIE association. In 2018, Lithuania has an ambitious goal to take the chairmanship for TAFTIE and would like to take an active part in the discussions on how to better implement research and innovation policies.

INNOVATION IN ACTION: Strategy for Lithuania and the EU November 21 (Wednesday) 2018 | 9.30 – 12.00 (welcome co�ee from 9.00) Permanent Representation of Lithuania to the EU41-43 Rue Belliard, 1040 Brussels

Innovation is as never before vital component of the European competitiveness in the global economy. Therefore, discussions on the most e�ective and future-proof Innovation policy are gaining momentum in the EU and its Member States’ agendas. Thanks to recent ambitious reforms of Lithuania’s innovation system and the changing culture favouring more risk-taking, visibility of Lithuania’s R&D and innovation is growing on the EU level and globally. This half-day event will be dedicated to taking a closer look at a number of outstanding showcases: from the perspective of a start-up and more established R&D-intensive enterprise to the local support system and global network. Ričardas ValančiauskasRičardas Valančiauskas is the head of R&D Programmes and International Cooperation Department at MITA. The department implements various programmes and initiatives designed to promote applied research, commercialization of R&D results and development of innovation. It also covers international cooperation and participation in international R&D programmes (e.g. Horizon 2020). Ričardas joined MITA in 2011 with a focus on the promotion of IP management and open access to public research infrastructures. Later he’s been actively involved in the development of national Smart specialization strategy, implementation of Green Industry Innovation Programme, Technological Development Programme and other schemes. Ričardas has a dual background. He holds a Master’s Degree in Innovation and Technology Management and a Master’s Degree in Law.

Mr Antti Peltomäki Mr Antti Peltomäki is Deputy Director-General of the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs Directorate-General since February 2012. In this function, Mr Peltomäki is responsible for Single Market Policy, Regulation and Surveillance; Industrial transformation and Advanced value

chains; Consumer, Environmental and Health Industries; and Innovation and Advanced Manufacturing Directorates.

Mr. Peltomäki is also the Commission representative at the Management Boards of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

Before that, Mr Peltomäki was Deputy Director-General in the Information Society and Media Directorate General where he was firstly responsible for research cooperation in the context of the seventh research framework (2007-2013) and thereafter for regulatory policy in the telecommunications, media and internet fields.

Mr Peltomäki has also worked as Head of the Commission’s representation in Helsinki in 2006 – 2007. Prior to joining the Commission in 2006, Mr Peltomäki worked for almost ten years in the office of the Prime Minister of Finland, initially as State Under-Secretary, then State Secretary for EU affairs.

A lawyer by training, Mr Peltomäki began his career as a coordinator of international research and training courses at the Helsinki University of Technology.

Christian Bason Christian Bason is the chief executive of the Danish Design Centre. His role is to set the strategic direction for the organisation, and to govern the most demanding initiatives and activities. Christian is also CEO of Design Society, a foundation which is the parent company of the Danish Design Center, INDEX: Design to improve life, Danish Fashion Institute and Copenhagen Fashion Week.

From 2007 to 2014, he was Director of MindLab, the Danish government’s innovation team. From 1998 to 2006, he was a consultant and business manager with the international advisory group Rambøll Management, heading the organisation and management practice.

Christian is a prolific contributor to blogs and magazines, including Harvard Business Review, Stanford Social Innovation Review and the Danish weekly business and political magazine Mandag Morgen. He is the author of seven books on design, innovation and management, most recently Leading Public Design (2017), Form Fremtiden (Shape the future; 2016), Design for Policy (2014) and Leading Public Sector Innovation (2010). Christian is a visiting associate professor at several executive educations, including Oxford Saïd Business School, the European School of Administration, Copenhagen Business School and Aarhus University.

Christian is a member of the board for the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK), and a member of The Rockwool Foundation’s Research Programme Committee. He is a former Chair of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Public Sector Innovation and a former member of the European Design Leadership Board. Currently, he is a member of the SIRI Commission and the Danish government’s challenge panel on public innovation and digitization. Christian holds an M.Sc. in Political Science from Aarhus University and a Ph.D. from Copenhagen Business School, CBS. Christian is in high demand as a speaker and inspires and advises business leaders and governments in Denmark and abroad.

Philipp Aiginger

Philipp Aiginger is a program manager of the program Impact Innovation, which he designed as the first pilot program in the FFG and successfully implemented it within the last two years. This new und unique program focuses on innovation projects without technical and/or R&D focus. Furthermore he is responsible for designing new programs and services within the General Programs (bottom-up programs within FFG) and evaluates business plans of R&D project applications.

Audrone Drungilaite Audrone Drungilaite has been interested in design ever since she began to study at a local children’s art school. Even after launching a career in credit management, she couldn’t leave her love of design behind and, after studies in France, she resolved to make it her future.

Winning the Lithuanian Design Award in 2013 and being nominated for the Young Designer of the Year competition in 2014 nailed it and since 2014 she has been chief executive of the Lithuanian Design Forum (LDF). The LDF is a non-governmental organization that seeks to raise the profile of design as a factor for sustainable economic growth and as a catalyst for societal development, across manufacturing, communication and public life.

Audrone is also responsible for the management of Design Week Lithuania, the biggest design festival in the Baltics. A graduate of Vilnius Academy of Arts with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design and a Master’s in Cultural Management and Politics, Audrone is an enthusiastic promoter of Lithuanian design around the world – and sometimes curates Lithuanian design exhibitions abroad.

Dr. Anna Whicher

Dr. Anna Whicher is Head of Design Policy at PDR - the International Design Research Centre in Cardiff. She is an elected board member of the Bureau of European Design Associations and an accredited master trainer for the Service Design Network. Her main interests are in developing, implementing and evaluating policies and services using design methods. Currently, she is leading the Design4Innovation project, funded by Interreg Europe, to integrate design into business support programmes and develop Design Action Plans

Robin Edman

Robin Edman is presently the CEO of Robin Edman Innovation.

Robin held the position as Chief Executive of SVID, Swedish Industrial Design Foundation since 2001 up until mid-2017. Robin led SVID, a National design promotion organization that disseminates knowledge, drives networks and is engaged in major innovation and design programs in the private and public sectors. Robin has worked with integrating a better understanding of the users, their needs and the importance of design in business and society at large.

Between 1981 and 2001 Robin worked for AB Electrolux Global Design organization with positions in the US as Vice President of Industrial Design for Frigidaire Company and in Sweden as Vice President of Electrolux Global Design. Robin has served as President of BEDA (Bureau of European Design Associations), 2015-2017 and on the board of ICSID between 2004 and 2007. (now World Design Organisation, WDO)

A major interest has always been to find justification and proof for the investments made and the results displayed. Measuring design and the balance of functional, emotional and social values play a key role in this search. His engagement in design related activities is displayed by the numerous international jury appointments (Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Spain, USA, Australia and Singapore), speaking engagements, advisory council and board positions he has held.

Robin is a Swedish and US citizen. He loves the outdoors where he sails, skies, trip-skates, runs, bicycles and enjoys the wind, rain, sun, and snow as well as works in his garden and model shop.

Päivi Tahkokallio

‘I moved to Lapland, the very High North of Europe, ten years ago. It has certainly changed my perspective. Living in the Arctic reminds you every day of the fragility of our globe in the hands of current climate change. We need responsible actions, and here design is to play a role.’

Päivi Tahkokallio is Founder and CEO of Tahkokallio Design+, a design thinking and strategic design agency from Lapland, Finland.

Päivi, with her track record on strategic and social design has been called the mother of Arctic Design, a design approach to support sustainable development of the Arctic. Creator of the brand for the Arctic Design Week, she helped the city of Rovaniemi to partner up with Helsinki, the World Design Capital in 2012, and was the catalyst in the inclusion of arctic design in the national Arctic Strategy of Finland. Päivi has extensive experience in the inclusive approach to design. During the 20 years with the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto ARTS) and The National R&D Centre for Healthcare and Wealth, Päivi became an international advocate of Design for All, creating and leading the Design for All Network in Finland and actively participating in the work of European eAccessibility Design for All Network. In the early years of 2000 she was the President of Design for All Europe EIDD.

Päivi is President-elect of BEDA, The Bureau of European Design Associations with 50 member organisations in 26 European countries, and Vice President of Ornamo Art and Design Finland. She is the Chair of Design Committee of Lapland Chamber of Commerce and

a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA, London, UK).
