Tariff Reduction● Tariff- Tax on goods imported

into the U.S. from another country

● In 1913, Congress passed the Underwood Tariff Act- this reduced tariffs to their lowest level in 50 years

● This act also put in place a graduated income tax (the more you make, the more tax you pay)

Banking Reform● Bank failures were common

● In 1913, the Federal Reserve Act was passed

● This act allowed banks to borrow money to keep from collapsing

● This put banks under the supervision of the national govt. for the first time

Stronger Anti-Trust Legislation● In 1914, Congress passed

the Clayton Anti-Trust Act- this act prohibited companies from buying competitors stock to create monopolies

● It also made strikes, boycotts, and picketing legal

Women Gain the Vote● For years women’s suffrage

groups had been working to get women the right to vote in the U.S.

● In 1920, the 19th Amendment was finally ratified giving women full voting rights

The Brownsville Incident● In 1906, 12 African

American soldiers were accused of a shooting in the town of Brownsville, TX

● The soldiers were told that if no one accepted responsibility for the shooting, they would all be disciplined

● No one came forward

● President Roosevelt signed the papers and discharged 167 soldiers

● Many years later it was proven that the soldiers were falsely accused

● In 1972, the U.S. Govt. finally changed their discharge status from “Dishonorable” to “Honorable”
