Good Evening and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this Spartan

South Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Stotfold FC

to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us, and have a safe trip

back afterwards.

We met Stotfold back in December on a cold and wet night when we came

away with a 1-0 win.

Our guests today maybe in the lower half of the league but are sure to be

looking to finish as high as possible and will give us a stern test again

today.

We showed once again that the First Team is nearly there and can

compete against any side in the league. Although this was their third

defeat in a row. Again it was by the odd goal and they put the opposition

under some great pressure and deserved to get something from the game.

The Reserves put up a great performance last Saturday only losing 1-0 to

Sutton Utd Reserves who are a cut above in the Premier league. To show

what a tough league this is, they played a good side from the level below on

Tuesday in The Shield and won comfortably 5-1.

Their home game today has been cancelled but they will be back here on

Tuesday evening against Northwood.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award. Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves. SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

STOTFOLD FC-CLUB HISTORY

Stotfold is a small country town with a population in the region of 7000. It is situated in the county of Bedfordshire, but being near the North Herts border has strong links with the Hertfordshire towns of Baldock, Hitchin and Letchworth. The first recorded football within Stotfold was in 1904, however it is certain that the gamewas played for a number of years before. Our present ground was first used in 1911 by Stotfold Athletic when it was just a meadow named 'Roker'. We were delighted tomove back some 43 years later in 1954 from the Hitchin Road Recreation Ground. For the first twenty years of the clubs history, we played in the Biggleswade and District League. This was followed by a spell of nearly 30 years in North Herts Football. The clubs first trophy was won in 1911 when we beat Potton 1-0 in the Biggleswade and District Championship. In 1951 we joined the South Midlands League Division 2 and in 1953 were promoted to Division 1. In 1955 we were promoted to the Premier Division, where we stayed for 30 years winning the championship in 1980 and were runners up no fewer than 9 times. The club joined the United Counties League in 1984/85 season with our best placing as runners up in 1993/94and 1995/96 under the guidance of ex Arsenal player Ian Allinson. During 1998-2000 the club won The Beds Senior and Premier Cups, UCL League Cup, and the Hinchingbrooke Cup as well as being runners up and finalists in two North Beds Charity Cups. The club also reached the last 32 of the FA Vase and the 3rd Qualifying Rd of the FA Cup in 2000 under Phil Pateman's management. Kenny Davidson took over the side in 2001, reaching the final of the Beds Senior Cup but resigned in Dec 2002. Phil Pateman assumed charge of the side again and the team won the North Beds Charity Cup and were finalists in the Hunts Premier Cup. However their most notable success came from being awarded national fair play team of the year by Ladbrokes in association with The Non League paper as well as the UCL fair play award. They finished a creditable 10th place from a previous 18th and retained the NBCC. During the summer Phil Pateman stepped down to concentrate solely on his chairman duties, and secured the services of, ex player and former St. Albans City and Baldock Manager, Steve Cook for the 2004/05 season. Steve left the club for Borehamwood after one season, and Jim Benton, stepped forward to take charge for the 05 /06 season. This saw many familiar faces drift away from the club and many new ones appear, poor discipline and performances on and off the pitch resulted in a bad year all round for the club and after Jims departure local Manager Glen Clarke was handed the position and after handing in his notice in on the eve of the new season. Coach & physio Ian Williscroft took charge for the first 9 games before Mark Teeling took charge midway through September. After gaining 11 points from 17 league games and some heavy defeats Mark was replaced in December by the previously successful partnership of Ian Donnelly and Ian Allinson. With the club staring relegation in the face, Ian recruited several senior players and combined these with the best of our young squad and the club hauled themselves out of the bottom two winning eight of

our last ten games. During the summer the squad was strengthened further and this culminated in the most successful season in the clubs history. The first and second team squads won their respective league and county cup competitions, (the first club to do so), with the second team remaining unbeaten in the league. In addition the club were the only club to reach the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup before losing to Tonbridge Angels. So it was a shock and bitter disappointment when the UCL decided against awarding Ian Allinson the Manager of the Year Award. During the summer Ian was offered the Managers job at Ryman Premier League Borehamwood and this was an offer he could ill afford to miss. He has since given the opportunity to several of the successful side to play with him at that level. However he left a great legacy and we promoted Ian Donnelly the position with reserve manager Terry Kitchener stepping up to assist him. Success continued winning the UCL League Cup and North Beds Charity Cup and finishing League Runners Up. The Reserves and the Under 18 Academy continued to sweep all before them under Gordon Bickerstaff’s Management and after Ian Donnelly stepped down with Terry at the end of last season it was easy to promote from within again with Gordon bringing his Assistant Cecil Lee with him. The management have an opportunity to take us to a new level with most of the first team likely to have come through our Academy set up with many of last season’s players having resigned despite the disappointment of being refused SSML status for the third year running. In what turned out to be the club’s final season in the UCL, 2009/10 saw the first team produce a very creditable performance reaching the 4th round of the FA Vase and finishing 7th in the league. They also Having finally been granted a move to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League in 2010/2011 the Eagles struggled to adapt until the new year and eventually finished mid table. The first team reached the final of the NBCC losing to Biggleswade Town 2-1. The reserves most of their players who needed a fresh challenge after being so successful leaving Manager Malcolm Ward with a difficult task and they also finished in a respectable mid table position. The Academy continued to go from strength to strength with the U15 and U18 Academy teams winning the Beds County Cup. The 18’s also won the County Floodlight Cup and the Ridgeon’s League West Title under Manager Ryan Brooke. In 2012 Gordon Bickerstaff stood down and Steve Young took charge of first team duties supporting by Roy Ryall. Gary Hoy took over the Reserves whilst continuing to run our Under 17 and 18 Academy teams. After another poor start the first team secured a respectable mid table position whilst the Reserves, (made up almost entirely of Academy players), won the Biggleswade KO Cup. Our Under 18s reached the first round of the FA Youth club for the very first time despite playing mostly 16 yr old players before going out to Leyton Orient. U17s finished 2nd and U18’s first in their respective leagues. Last season the Academy have again flourished reaching the 3rd QR of the FA Youth Cup before losing to full time Academy side Cambridge United on penalties. They also have reached 2 semi-finals and are 3rd in the league. The first team turned their season around from being 3rd from bottom of the SSML Premier Division with just 18 points at Xmas, to two cup finals and a semi-final place in another. They also moved away from the foot of the table with a further 29 points in the second half of the season. During the close season the club reappointed Steve Young as Manager but the club were left stunned and when Coach Tony Lamacraft collapsed after an abandoned first

team friendly caused by the double leg fracture of one of the Stotfold players Wells. Despite the valiant efforts of club officials and paramedics including an air ambulance crew Tony passed away. Over 500 attended his funeral and Tony is sadly missed not just by Stotfold but the whole of the local football community. Steve has promoted within with Michael Parkin and Matt Endersby stepping up and the club have also appointed Rob Bates as the Under 18 Academy Manager. Rob played professionally for Colchester United and was the Academy Manager for Biggleswade Town last season before resigning his position in the summer, with most of that academy side following him to the club after a hugely successful 2013 season. The club has also reformed the Reserve side after a traumatic 2013 season and Dave Elkin joins from Langford. Despite the loss of a number of first team players during the summer the team have rebuilt and are looking to progress, continuing with the development of youth as this is the way forward for the club.

MATCH REPORT – SATURDAY 14 MARCH 2015

WE LEAVE IT TOO LATE

We waited until we were 2 goals behind before mounting a late surge which should have yielded at least a point out of this game. We have never achieved much success from our visits to Hadley, with just one draw to show from 5 previous visits, but we started positively and were the more effective side during the first quarter of the match.

Kieran Turner was prominent in our best early moves nearly picking out Chris Vardy with a clever pass which a defender cleared for the first corner of the game in the 7th minute. Then Kieran linked up nicely with Vardy before firing a shot just wide of the far post. Kieran turned provider again with a fine free kick that just skimmed the head of Adam Toone with the goal at the mercy of our big centre back. We were stringing together some nice moves and Ryan Sturges and new signing Lee Stobbs, who was making his first start, combined well down our right before Lee fired in a dangerous cross which Chris Vardy, under pressure from a defender, put well over the bar.

Hadley, under the tutelage of former Spurs and Chelsea star Micky Hazzard, are recognised as the best footballing side in the South Midlands but had showed little during this opening spell. Early on we had to block a couple of shots after a bit of casual play and there was a moment when we conceded possession and were momentarily outnumbered at the back but a misplaced pass averted the possible danger. But we were coping well with their attacks and they didn't win their first corner until 21st minute.

But gradually they started to get their act together and started to dominate possession. The home skipper Nick Chrysanthou fired in a good long range shot but it was comfortably collected by Jack Hopwood and despite ending the first half strongly the home side had created little in the way of genuine goal scoring opportunities.

The half time team talk by Micky Hazzard must have hit the right spot as Hadley started the second half in a far more threatening manner. Within two minutes of the restart former Arsenal player Jernande Meade struck the post with a terrific free kick and then a few minutes later Jermal Baptiste was played through but was denied by Jack Hopwood who came out to block him.

We were dropping deeper and deeper and finding it harder to break out from our own half. The tall centre back Louis Bowen headed a corner over and the skilful Meade was becoming more and more influential with his tricky footwork and close control. Meade broke down the left and whipped in a super cross which we manage to clear and then smashed a shot just wide of the far post.

A goal was on the cards and in the 58th minute it duly arrived when Laste Dombaxe struck a superb free kick from outside the box that gave Jack Hopwood no chance. We deserved to be behind and it seems churlish to complain but it has to be said that it was never a free kick in the first place as Meade had lost control of the ball. Score 1-0.

Jack Hopwood was called into action again in the 71st minute denying Baptiste with a great save. We were living dangerously and Hadley doubled their lead in the 77th minute through Baptiste following an unusual lapse by Jack. The 18 year old has been superb for us since stepping for the injured Matt Evans but he was caught out by a tricky bounce and the Hadley forward followed up to tuck away the loose ball. Score 2-0.

Julian and Ian decided to shake things up and adopt a more attacking approach bringing on teenagers Ollie Hogg and Taylor Collins for Stuart Stedman and Ryan McMahon and they soon combined to great effect to bring us right back in the game. Ollie is a terrific prospect and was making a welcome return following an illness. In the 82nd minute he released Chris Vardy down the left with a super pass and our leading scorer outpaced the defender before crossing to fellow forward Taylor Collins to finish for his 16th goal of the season. Score 2-1.

It was now game on as the roles reversed with us now dominating possession and our hosts dropping deep to defend. From a corner the ball was played back into Adam Toone who stabbed it wide of the post unaware that behind him Taylor Collins was waiting in a better position. Lee Stobbs then sent in a great cross which Chris Vardy was just unable to control.

Pressure was mounting on Hadley as we won a series of corners and time was on our side as there was a lot to be added on following an injury to the referee who had to be replaced.

We went mighty close to an equaliser in the 97th minute when Chris Vardy produced a lovely back heel to play in Lee Stobbs whose shot was superbly saved by the home keeper Charlie Mann, who did even better to recover quickly and tip a follow up header from Adam Toone away for another corner.

Still the corners kept coming and Adam Toone must have thought he had scored with a great header but the ball was cleared off the line with our p[layers claiming the defender had used his hand to keep the ball out.

But time eventually ran out and Hadley held onto the victory by the skin of their teeth.

Although that makes it 3 defeats in a week we can point to the fact that they were all by the narrowest of margins against very good teams. A little bit of good fortune with refereeing decisions would have helped but we have not had much luck in that department this season.

Tring kept faith largely in the lads who had travelled to Sutton and done so

well last weekend and it paid dividends with another committed display

and a handsome victory.

Highlights -

0-1. Tring go behind after shocking defending from 3 successive corners.

James Cullimore headed off the line from one but a goal resulted from the

third.

1-1 A good move involving Fitzgerald on the left ended up with Olly Butler

finishing with aplomb to equalise.

2-1 Green jinked on the right and crossed for Collins to head home.

Half Time 2-1

3-1 Fitzgerald forages on the left again. His misplaced cross finds Tom

Cullimore 30 yards. He unleashes a thunderbolt, Van Basten style, into the

net to stake a claim for goal of the season. Let's hope it was captured on

camera..

4-1 Ollie Hoggs tenacity in the box pays off and he slams the ball past the

despairing dive of the keeper.

5-1 Joe Naylor steams through and pulls the ball back for Miles Blunsom

to drill home.

In the 93rd minute, House probes in midfield and seems to release Blunsom

through. Loud Cries of "oh no not again" from the bench, the stands, the

bar, the pitch and from Tring High St but thankfully Miles couldn't get on

the end of it.

TAFC First team 1-2 AFC Dunstable TAFC goals: Christopher Vardy

LATE OFFSIDE GOAL ROBS US OF A POINT We had a bad start and finish to this game after we conceded a goal after only 10 minutes and then, after staging a comeback to level the score midway through the 2nd half, we succumbed to a winner 5 minutes from time. What made matters worse was that the winning goal was clearly offside, a fact that was confirmed by a visiting official. Dunstable are challenging for promotion and are a tough enough outfit to compete against without giving them a helping hand. This was our 2nd close defeat in 3 days and completes a tough 2.5 month schedule during which we have played all the teams above us with the exception of Wembley. Our young side have responded superbly to the challenge and since December we have only lost once to a team below us and that was away at Colney Heath back in January. During this period we have suffered 5 defeats, all by a single goal and have pushed more experienced outfits to the limit and the way Dunstable resorted to time wasting tactics at the end was a complement to our players. Dan Steadman and Ollie Butler were available again so we were able to play our more favoured 3 at the back formation. The game itself was at times scrappy although there was a positive start with the visitors winning a corner after only 40 seconds and just over a minute later Chris Vardy tried a snap shot which went well over but showed a degree of confidence. Kieran Turner produced some deft footwork to win a corner and the Dunstable left back Newman Carney found himself free down the left but fortunately for us his cross was blocked. The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute in rather disappointing circumstances. Adam Toone saw his free kick charged down by Lorenzo Silvestri, who was no where near 10 yards away, but we managed to scramble the ball away for corner. But our reprieve was short lived as we failed to clear the set piece and George Biggadike was able to score from close range. Score 0-1. It was not the start we wanted and although there were pockets of good play we were struggling to get our game going and find the accuracy to open up a solid Dunstable defence. Our guests were the better side and looked more threatening but we gave Jack Hopwood plenty of cover and for all their possession our visitors didn't stretched Jack too much. A disappointing half ended with Dunstable holding a 1-0 lead and looking in a strong position.. Regrettably Mills was stretchered off 10 from the end and we hope it is not too serious and that he makes a swift recovery. We retaliated with a quick free kick to Kieran Turner whose shot was deflected, but keeper Ricky Perks got down safely to gather. We were not making any real inroads through the opposition defence so in the 66th minute Julian and Ian made a bold triple substitution bringing on Rob Tomlin, Luke Dunstan and Lee Stobbs for Kieran Turner, Stuart Stedman and Ollie Butler. The change seemed to perk us up and 4 minutes later we equalised when Greg Deer's free kick was headed on by Chris Vardy and helped into the net by a defender. Its debatable whether Vardy's header was on target but he did get the important touch so he gets credited with the goal. Score 1-1.

Within a minute we nearly committed an act of gross negligence when we lost the ball on the edge of our area but we were let off lightly when Jermaine Hall sent his shot wide of the target. Suddenly the game opened out a bit and Taylor Collins nearly capitalised on an unusual bit of hesitancy in the visitors defence, with the keeper calming the situation by gathering up the ball. We were boldly going for the win but that meant we were vulnerable to breakaways. There was a heart in the mouth moment when Adam Toone, fell or was tripped, as he tried to deal with a long ball allowing sub Chris Francis a free run on goal but his shot hit the post. Later Francis was through again but Jack Hopwood was equal to his shot. It was even stevens at this stage but with 5 minutes to go we rather rashly gave a free kick away in a dangerous position to the left of our area. The ball was expertly whipped into our box and Grant Fryer headed the ball home at the far post. We now know that the Dunstable centre back was offside but the goal was allowed to stand. Score 1-2. Coming back twice against a quality side like Dunstable was a big ask and whilst Luke Dunstan fired a shot that whistled just gotover the bar we were unable to repeat our earlier rescue act and our guests picked up 3 valuable points in their pursuit of the title. Our young inexperienced team will have learnt some valuable lesions from the game which can only be beneficial in the future. Dunstable closed the gap on Kings Langley to 2 points but the league leaders have 3 games in hand so their destiny is in their own hands. We remain in 8th place but teams below have games in hand so we may drift down a few places in the table. With have 9 league games left but only 2 are against teams above us in the table. We need to start picking up wins again against lower placed teams starting at Hadley on Saturday but that would require setting a record because we have never won there! Sutton United 1-0 TAFC Reserve team

They would have probably written songs and poems about it. It would have entered Tring

folklore. Maybe a blockbuster film would have been scripted. Chris Juraszek played by a Warren

Mitchell or Wilfred Bramble type character. Rude, Crochety. Captain Courageous James

Cullimore played by Tom Hanks. Joe Fitzgerald played by a cocky young Sean Penn. Michael

Green by George Clooney. But it wasn't to be. All ruined by a dastardly villain linesman (played

by Lee Van Cleef) and his flag.

Tring took the long trip to unbeaten Sutton United with a patched up team full of youth team

players and players who had mainly played A Team football of late and the portents were grim.

Even more so after the lads went 1 down after 2 mins to a goal from a corner. But the lads dug in

and produced a fantastic dogged and committed display to frustrate their illustrious opponents. It

was heroic stuff. Matt Stacey performed superbly on his full debut at centre half. Joe Fitzgerald

and Tom Cullimore produced 90 minutes of tenacity as the Dogs of War in midfield.

Sutton had 80% of possession and territorial superiority but the lads would not buckle - and even

threatened on the break. George House jinked through but tried to chip the keeper when through

on goal. The lads kept going. Grasso made a couple of fine saves to keep Tring in touch.

Trings young guns were growing in stature and confidence, led by a fine display from the ever

improving James Cullimore. Sutton hit the bar. Sutton hit the post but the lads were hanging in.

Sutton were moaning at the officials - obviously rattled that they weren't 3 or 4 up against a club

so much lower in the league and in the football pyramid than themselves.

Phillips, Seaton and Juraszek squabbled over substitutions - but though the personnel changed the

level of commitment didn't. We were in injury time and, unbelievably, still in the game.

Fitzgerald floated over a free kick, Green rose at the far post and arrowed a header into the net.

He was mobbed by ecstatic team mates - but the joy was short lived, and endless tales of heroism

denied by Lee Van Cleef with his flag. He had apparently seen a push.
