I would like to say thank you to the Parish Council of Warsop and Elaine Hutchison, Landlady of Hare & Hounds Pub, for supporting local residents, Lord Kenjiro Sanga Anton Jon Evans and his youngest son Adam-Lee Evans, of The Burns, Warsop. Both athletes, who are members of the Warsop TAGB Taekwondo Club, have recently returned from the Worlds Taekwondo Championships, which were held in Birmingham, with over 8,000 competitors from countries around the world.   They already hold medals from the Midlands and UK Championships and after returning with bronze and silver medals they now also have World Championships status. Not just for the UK Team but also their home town of Warsop, Nottinghamshire. During the Championships Lord K.S.A.J. Evans (pictured above left), was able to compete in patterns, and sparring for green to blue belt. He now holds a bronze medal in sparring, for the whole of the world, not just UK. His son Adam-Lee Evans (pictured above right), (who suffers from A.D.H.D. and who is still in full time education) did well in his pattern work, just missing out on a medal. He then went on to compete in sparring for yellow to green belt, just missing out on a Bronze medal. Adam-Lee was then asked to join the World Champions Sparring Team for UK and came home with a silver medal. I would just like to close with a massive thank you for not just helping these locals champions to compete in the World Championships, but also for encouraging them to continue to work towards their sporting goals. Both Lord Evans and Adam-Lee would like to thank their family and friends for all their support, and hope to keep winning medals, both for the club and the local community. The sport is open to all, and they would welcome new members. Mrs.H.Evans, Mother of Adam-Lee Evans & Carer, on Behalf of Lord K Evans & AL Evans. This year’s 11th Open World Taekwondo Championships took place on 16th and 17th July at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. Three students from the club competed at the World Championships bringing home 2 silvers and a bronze medal from a tournament with around 8,000 competitors from around the globe. Then on Sunday 4th September, eight students attended the South East Championships at Surrey Sports Park in Surrey, bringing home a total of 11 medals. These events typically include sparring, patterns, musical patterns, destruction and team patterns. Congratulations, a fantastic effort by all! The winners receiving their medals. October 2016 Tributes to Peter Councillors from Warsop and Mansfield pay tribute after the loss of Peter Crawford who sadly passed away on 13th September after a short battle with cancer. Cllr Crawford had been a member of Mansfield District Council since 2007. He represented the Birklands ward until boundary changes in 2011 when he moved to being member for the Warsop Carrs ward. He also served on Warsop Parish Council. During his years with MDC he served as a chairman of Select Commission 3/Overview & Scrutiny Committee 3 (Budget Scrutiny), was a former Chairman of Audit Committee and former Chairman of Licensing Committee. Kate Allsop Executive Mayor of Mansfield Peter Crawford was an excellent councillor with a great sense of humour. He was challenging in his role, very diligent and he read all his papers, and more importantly he understood them. I have known Peter ever since he was elected back in 2007. He became a colleague and then a friend. Peter was someone whose judgement I trusted. He was always courteous and respectful; he knew what a great honour it was to be an Elected Member of the council. He is a great loss to Mansfield District Council and I send my sincere condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed. Sonya Ward Labour leader Councillor Peter was the model of what a hard-working councillor should be. He was committed to ensuring the best for his ward residents, and the people of Mansfield and district. He had a keen brain for mathematics and finances, and was a leading light on the council’s Budget Scrutiny Committee, of which he was a former a chair. He was immensely dedicated to improving the lot of people in his ward, and served both Mansfield District Council and Warsop Parish Council. During this time, he was a tireless campaigner, dedicated to maintaining facilities to local people. He was cheerful, determined and persistent, with a dry sense of humour, and was always happy to support other councillors, especially when it came to issues around finance and budgets. Even when very poorly, he was still conducting council work from his hospital bed, which is a measure of how dedicated he was to serving the community. We will miss Peter very much. He was a valued part of the Labour team at Mansfield District Council and an asset to both his community and the council. John Kerr Parish Council & MDC Councillor Peter and I became Parish Councillors in 2003 and District Councillors in 2007, it was an exciting new beginning for both of us. It became clear very soon to me how good he really was as a councillor, his concern and his commitment to the community he represented was unwavering. It was his top priority, and soon we were to become the best of friends, we would holiday, go to the pub, play golf together, he did eventually start hitting the ball. But Peter’s proudest moment was when his twin grandsons came along, that was 7 years ago and then another and another, 4 grandsons who he loved and talked about all the time. Peter had a wicked sense of humour, and always said what he thought and you could always hear him coming by his whistle. Peter wasn’t a tall man but his shoes will be hard to fill, you will be missed my friend. Bev Smith Chief Executive of Mansfield District Council Peter was an extremely active ward councillor, who was always fighting for the community of Warsop. His challenging and probing questions in scrutiny meetings always kept us on our toes and the passion with which he spoke about Warsop was something to admire.

General Tasks and garden maintenanceTidy bordersKeep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but do try to resist the temptation of a thorough spring clean. Leave seedheads for the birds if you don’t want to collect them and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter.Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), however diseased material is another matter; make it a priority to clear and burn it to prevent pests and diseases overwintering courtesy of your kind hospitality! Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

Start your compostIf you haven’t already done so, start your compost going by buying a bin or building a partially enclosed area for a heap. It is vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground for next spring. Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, weeds (but not the roots unless they have been through a shredder), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal.Turn once a week or so if you can and NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material (such as diseased rose petals - heinous culprits) to your compost - it is a warm and welcoming nirvana for unwelcome guests who will reappear with a vengeance next year! Onto the bonfire with them without a qualm...

Prepare your soil for next yearYour soil is your most precious commodity, so start digging in compost, manure and as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better, especially if your soil is heavy. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier!

WateringHardly an issue at the moment! However, do keep an eye on your pots and containers in dry spells and check for wilting leaves before it is too late; all plants that keep their leaves continue to transpire, so should not be allowed to dry out completely.Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this should be kept clear to allow moisture to get to the roots. Mulching with bark or compost will help.

PlantingWith the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. Even in damp conditions it is worth checking the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting - heavy rain will not necessarily penetrate a rootball that has been allowed to dry out, so if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water before planting.

Rake fallen leavesDon’t waste fallen leaves (except those perilous rose leaves and evergreens, which take too long to rot down) - given time they decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake up fallen leaves and chuck them into a simple frame to make leaf mould (black bin liners spiked with air holes will also do if you can bear the visual offense - but remember to dampen the leaves first). If left to linger on the lawn for long, the grass will turn yellow. Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat.

BirdsOur feathered friends will be starting to build their reserves for winter, so do please put out food and fresh water for them.Wildlife experts recommend that we feed the birds year round as they soon become reliant on the food we provide. Their greatest time of need is during winter and spring, when their natural food sources are greatly depleted. Putting out food helps them survive the chilly winter months and ensures they are in good condition for the breeding season. Choose good quality wild bird seed, bird peanuts (remember to take them out of nylon mesh bags which can trap beaks and legs), suet and fat balls (these are great high energy foods and ideal during cold weather) as well as kitchen scraps such as crushed breakfast cereals, pinhead oatmeal, uncooked porridge oats, hard fats such as mild cheese, fresh and dried fruit, cooked potatoes and cooked rice. Bread is only an ‘empty filler’ so not ideal and remember never to put out mouldy food. Also do make sure your ‘feeding station’ has good all round visibility and is well out of curious cat range!A plentiful supply of clean water is essential for drinking and bathing; melt ice on frosty mornings with warm water, ensure the inside of your bird bath remains roughened and do remember to change the water regularly.Happy Gardening www.thegardencentregroup.co.uk

So October has arrived which means Autumn is upon us... I’ve said this before ... where is this year going?Last month was marred by some sad community news. Councillor Peter Crawford, member of Mansfield District Council and The Parish Council of Warsop sadly passed away on September 13th after a short battle with cancer. Peter was without a doubt a community champion. His dedication to Warsop District was second to none. I have certainly learned a lot from him and will greatly miss his expertise and sense of humour. Many of you will also be aware of the tragic news about Nathan ‘Fishcake’ Priest. Nathan disappeared on Friday 9th September and unfortunately his body was discovered a week later after an extensive search. During this time, although an extremely sad occurance, it was somewhat comforting to witness the fantastic community spirit we have in the district as many, many residents turned out in force to help the police in their search for Nathan.A charity fundraising day in Nathan’s memory will be happening from 1pm on Saturday 1st October 2016 at The Woodend Pub, Church Warsop. In other news, we’d love to hear your thoughts about this paper - see page 4 for more details.

Footpath & Countryside Group

WARSOP

Our Secretary can be contacted on 01623 846281.WF&CG is a community group whose members share an interest in the countryside. We maintain the public footpath network in Warsop, we undertake conservation projects and we provide information about the local environment. www.wfcg.org.uk

Our ‘Warsop 1816 to 2016’ project is nearing completion. Our celebration event in the Tudor Barn in July was a most enjoyable evening and we have completed the five boundary walks marking the 200th anniversary of the 1816 perambulation of the parish. Now we are planning to walk the whole Warsop boundary on the third weekend of October, a distance of about 20 miles. The exact boundary is not followed by public rights-of-way so this is a longer distance than following the exact boundary. Please get in touch if you are interested in joining us for all or part of this walk. There will be shorter options that allow walkers to complete part of the route covering the first 7 or 10 miles of the route. We are also preparing a leaflet describing walks along Warsop’s boundary and our local primary schools have received our packs of local history resources.By now most of the paths that we regularly mow should had their final cut of the year. Next we will move onto our winter tasks that include hedge cutting and management work on local wildlife sites. The winter months also give us a chance to maintain and repair our equipment. This will be rather expensive this year as one of our mowers has a sheared drive thanks to the person who dumped bricks alongside the footpath that runs behind Egmanton Road. When the money for these tasks runs out we will have to give up!Over the summer months our attempts to eliminate the non-native Himalayan balsam plants from the banks of Warsop’s waterways has been largely successful although a few patches keep reappearing each year. Only one plant has to seed for there to be dozens appearing next spring. Real progress has been made on The Bottoms at Meden Vale wetlands where over 7000 plants have been removed so hopefully next year it will be an easier tasks to control it in that area. Some better news about our struggling water vole populations - evidence of their activity has been found downstream from Stone Bridge and also alongside the stream through Shirebrook Wood near Carter Lane.

This month may see the last Swallows departing and the arrivals of the first Fieldfares. Hopefully there will be a good crop of hedgerow fruit for them to feast on. Early predictions were that the cool spring weather would reduce the quantity of sloes, haws, hips and other fruits that many birds depend on but, as frequently happens, the later warm weather seems to have allowed things to catch up. October is a good month for fungi spotting, take a walk through our woodlands to admire the range of shapes and colours. We enjoyed a good evening at the Greenwood Community Awards when Alan Saxton, our longest serving volunteer, received an award recognising his contribution to maintaining our footpaths over the past twenty years. Everybody who enjoys walking along Warsop’s public footpaths should be grateful to Alan for his efforts.

We were all incredibly excited and never before has meat been so high on the topic of conversation at the club committee meetings. We chatted and discussed what it would look like, how big it would be, when it would arrive and most importantly what we could do with it. We finally agreed that the Club would hold a mediterranean afternoon, hosted by member Lynne and husband Graham at their home in Warsop. (picture attached)All funds from the afternoon would be raised for President Gloria’s charity, the NSPCC. Knowing what a fantastic afternoon it would be members and partners turned up in abundance. Just before the bank holiday, the sun came out and the atmosphere was infectious with fun, friendship and of course food. Our hosts provided salads to accompany the prized Ham and members brought some amazing pudding that were thoroughly enjoyed by all.Behind the scenes there is always a good opportunity to wear an apron and lots of extra hands to help our hosts Lynne and Graham with the washing up. The Serrano Ham was ceremoniously carved by President Gloria before handing over to our expert meat man Graham. It wasn’t long before some ‘ham’some chappies were lining up to taste it.

The afternoon was full of activities including a raffle and a charity auction. Some fantastic items and promises were donated by club members. To list just a few: a vintage bottle of whisky, a gourmet dinner for 4 people, a cake a month for a year, three Christmas wreaths and an afternoon tea for 6 people. We certainly have some generous and talented members in our club.

Mediterrane-ham AfternoonIt all started back in March when our local Morrison’s Superstore offered a Serrano Ham to one of our members, for the club to use as it saw fit.

Inner Wheel President Gloria and Husband Martin Humprhey

Our hosts Lynne and Graham.

Heading off to HardwickOn Tuesday 16th August we met at the home of Sue and Richard Goad for a bucks fizz and nibbles reception, before heading off to Hardwick Inn. Members Sue and Terry Newton-Snare prepared a wonderful one hour walk for us, across the hills and dales around Teversal and Hardwick. The Rotarian husbands who joined us set off at a cracking pace, but then there was a pub at the end of the walk and it was a hot day. The sun shone and the ladies chatted and admired the view. It was a great opportunity to see members, catch up and swap stories. The gentlemen were very organised and sorted out cars to bring us back to Sue and Richard’s home, where Terry and Sue provided coffee before we all went our separate ways. I don’t know how we manage it, but the sun always seems to shine when we set off. Hot and happy we are looking forward to the next month’s walk around Thorseby.

Gloria thanked everyone for coming and explained a little of why we were all gathered to hear Richard Westcott speak about his life as a pantomime dame. Gloria is one of many volunteers for Childline School Service and goes in to schools to talk to children from the age of 7, about all forms of abuse. There are many terrible stories in the world media about child abuse, and we are all very much aware of the historic abuse suffered by vulnerable children. By visiting the schools, the Childline School Service volunteers aim to counsel, guide and help those who may need the specialist services this charity can offer. The afternoon fund raiser was held to support this worthy cause and is Gloria’s chosen charity for her year as Inner Wheel President. Richard Westcott is a Pantomime dame and having retired from a hectic schedule of 2-3 performances, 6 days a week, Richard has taken to speaking at clubs and dinners to help raise funds. Richard was invited by the Inner Wheel Club of Warsop to speak and entertain over 70 ladies and three brave husbands. Richard started the talk as himself and then proceeds to build up the character of the Dame - Dame Matilda Maddona Kylie Trott in all her full regalia. He also provided some helpful tips and hints on make up application, but we may not use them. There was much banter between the Dame and the audience and although the middle of summer the performance was perfect panto spirit. Money was also raised from a raffle with all proceeds going to the charity.More details of the story can be found on our website www.warsopinnerwheel.co.uk

What a Difference a Dame MakesOn Tuesday 6 September, President Gloria Humphrey opened an afternoon of fun and friendship at the Hostess Sookholme.

...Recognises Warsop Footpaths VolunteerAlan Saxton, who volunteers with Warsop Footpaths Group was recognised with an award at the Greenwood Community Awards Ceremony recently at Swancar Farm in Trowell. The awards are for stars who go the extra mile for the community. In all, fourteen awards were presented on the night to volunteers from all areas of the Greenwood Community Forest and included awards for individuals and teams of all ages and abilities who take part in conservation tasks or work behind the scenes.Greenwood Partnership Board Chair, Councillor John Knight presented the awards to community groups and individual volunteers, for outstanding contribution towards improving the environment. He praised volunteers in his welcome speech: “We are pleased to be able to recognise volunteers who work year in, year out to make ours such a beautiful county.”One Hundred and forty guests enjoyed a review of achievements by volunteers and organisations presented by Friends of Gedling Country Park’s Rod Fillingham, Chair of the Friends of Greenwood Community Forum. Rod Fillingham congratulated the award winners and said: “Congratulations to every one of the award winners. Tonight has shown how diverse volunteers can be, with many vital assets including vision, determination, knowledge, skill, experience, but above all humour.”Nominated by Warsop Footpaths Group, Alan Saxton was presented with a “Behind the Scenes” volunteer award for his commitment to the group. Councillor Andrew Tristram, Mansfield’s representative on the Greenwood Partnership Board, spoke about Alan’s long association with Warsop Footpaths Group since its inception in his speech below.Alan Saxton’s BiographyAlan Saxton has been a member of Warsop Footpaths Group’s since the group’s formation and he has been the group’s treasurer for twenty years. In addition, he has been their tools and equipment officer since 2002, and frequently carries out repairs to ensure that the machinery is always in tip top condition and in the right place whenever needed for a work session. He has participated in 250 work sessions over the past 10 years, taking part in activities such as grass cutting, scrub clearance, planting and managing trees and hedgerows, water vole surveying, litter picking, gate and footbridge repairs and installing waymark posts. His knowledge of the local countryside and observations of wildlife is a valuable asset to the group.Without his efforts, they say they would not have been able to achieve as much as they have over the past two decades and Warsop folk should be grateful for his contribution towards an accessible footpaths network and improved biodiversity of local wildlife sites. Let Warsop Speak - Stonebridge Planning UpdateThank you to everyone who submitted a letter to Mansfield District Council regarding the proposed planning at Stonebridge – we estimate close to 400 objections have been lodged. This is a fantastic response from across Warsop; although we’re not sure how the receptionist at the Civic Centre felt when we deposited a box full of letters on her desk and asked for a receipt. We are still waiting to hear when it will be heard at the Planning Committee; the most likely date is 17th October. It is important that as many people as possible attend this – we need to demonstrate to MDC the depth of feeling in the area regarding its likely impact on the traffic, schools and healthcare. We would be interested to know from people in the immediate area what difference the schools returning have made to the Vale Avenue junction at peak times; this is a real concern if potentially a further 800 cars will need to use this route to access the A60. More importantly we have to ensure MDC realise just how much the Hills and Holes means to the people of Warsop and to the Mansfield area. The impact of building so close to a SSSI site must not be done without proper safeguards being put in place, and the current application appears to rely on ecological recommendations made with little or no site visits. We already have evidence of protected species in this area which have not been included in the planning application as there have been confirmed sightings of slow-worms (which despite their name are actually reptiles.) This is a species which is protected against intentional killing, injuring and sale under UK legislation. Sadly they are in declining numbers in the East Midlands and any development plans must take account of them and their habitat. We would also ask that you look out for the consultation on the Warsop Neighbourhood Plan put together by our Parish council. This gives you a real opportunity to have a say in the decisions that are made about Warsop. If you wish to get in touch with Let Warsop Speak you can join our facebook page or contact us on [email protected] Warsop Speak Community Action Group

The 33rd meeting of Meden Vale the Future was held at the Village Hall on Tuesday 21 June 2016. 9 members of the Committee were present and 1 Representative from the Allotments Association. 2 apologies were received. The 34th meeting of Meden Vale the Future was held at the Village Hall on Tuesday 19 July 2016. 9 members of the Committee were present, 1 Representative from the Allotments Association and 1 Councillor. 7 apologies were received. It was reported that the new deposit scheme for Village Hall bookings was working successfully. The hand dryer and leaking pipework in the gents toilet have been replaced and all damaged chairs have been repaired. A new hoover has been purchased for use by the Caretaker. The Public Liability Insurance certificate is now displayed on the Notice Board. It was agreed that the hire fee for parties will be increased from £15 to £20. A commemorative plaque and photograph of the former Caretaker, Helen Gash, has been positioned in the Hall underneath the clock. The Chairman reported that all relevant information has been submitted to the lady who is putting our application forward for heritage funding in respect of the pit wheels. We await developments. The Biogas Plant is now connected to the Grid, feedstock is arriving on site and it has been agreed that the official opening will be held on October 19th with a small opening ceremony on site followed by a buffet in the Village Hall. Following the unfortunate flooding incident near the old colliery entrance, decisive action has been taken to rectify the situation both in the short term and long term. The slurry pits have been cleaned out, any damage to property repaired and for the future a new drainage plan has been agreed with all concerned, to divert some of the water flowing off the south side of the pit tip. In addition, a maintenance plan has been put in place to ensure that the slurry pits do not become over filled again. The representative from the Allotments Association reported that there were still some vacant plots available. An application for funding for a sit-on lawn mower was in progress.Unfortunately the Tuesday and Thursday Prize bingo has ceased owing to lack of volunteers to run this. If anyone is interested in taking this task on, please contact the Caretaker or any member of the Committee. The Treasurer reported that the Accounts were reasonably satisfactory.

For details of our next meeting please call the number below. All are welcome.

October is the month when the Friends of Thynghowe’s archaeological year begins.

We start with our AGM at 7:30 on Thursday 27th October in Perlethorpe Village Hall. You don’t need to be a member to attend although you are welcome to sign up for only £5 a year! We will review the past year’s developments and preview forthcoming events. Our Autumn Workshop will be held on Saturday 12th November between 10am and 2pm in the classroom at Sherwood Pines. Topics covered will include feedback on the recent excavation on Thynghowe and discussion of plans for the winter months when we will take advantage of the ground conditions in the Forest to investigate the past of Sherwood. Everybody is welcome to attend. At the workshop, we are hoping to discuss the preliminary report on our ‘Vikings of Sherwood’ excavation that started with the community dig in April and concluded in August when the trenches were recorded and environmental samples were taken. Expert processing of these samples may provide dating evidence for the features on Thynghowe and possibly enable us to link the archaeology to the Viking assemblies held on the hill.If you fancy a go at archaeological excavation, the next phase of the Edwinstowe village dig is scheduled for 23rd to 26th October. Contact Mercian Archaeological Services on [email protected] for more details. Test pits will be dug at sites around the village to help date the phases of its development. How about a Warsop dig? Tentative early discussions are taking place. Are you interested?Members of The Friends of Thynghowe help the Forestry Commission with work sessions to manage the landscape around Thynghowe on one Friday each month during the winter months. Look at our Facebook page or email us if you would like to join us.

You can find out about our activities from our website and Facebook page and you can email us on [email protected] or contact us by phone on 846281.

The Vikings of Sherwood project is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

New Poaching LawsGovernment legislation that could have had an impact on some Warsop folk were the Game Laws of 1816 that limited the hunting of game to landowners.

Transportation for 7 years was the maximum penalty for poaching pheasant, partridge, hares and rabbits. Even being found in possession of a net at night was outlawed. The enclosure movement had deprived villagers of access to common land where they could catch game to supplement their poor diet. In other parts of the country injuries by spring-guns and mantraps to both poachers and gamekeepers were reported with attacks on gamekeepers increasing.(As part of our Warsop 1816 to 2016 project Warsop Footpaths & Countryside Group are sharing local news stories from 200 years ago)

Looking for the CampbellsGraham Carpenter, from Silverstream, New Zealand is endeavoring to make contact with the extended family of Glynn M CAMPBELL who he believes currently reside in or about Mansfield and Warsop, Nottinghamshire. The Campbell family members that Graham wish to contact are:Fiona L  CAMPBELL,  Ian C G CAMPBELL, Rebecca F  CAMPBELL, and Molly Gillian CAMPBELL. Three of these people are most likely the children of a Glynn M and Gillian M CAMPBELL who married in Nottinghamshire. There are also two sisters of the DERBY family namely Theresa M DERBY and Elaine I DERBY who were born in Nottinghamshire.Graham has created a fairly comprehensive flow chart of various other siblings with both the birth and marriage years of their forbears (parents and siblings) some of whom are deceased, and wishes to impart this data on to any member of the Campbell Parsons and/or Derby families who are perhaps interested in their maternal family lineage.Graham believes that the correct Great Grand-parentage of the above living people may be rather difficult to ascertain. Their decendants may be unaware that their great grandfather died in New Zealand and Graham has some enlightening information he would like to pass on.He has approached Warsop & District news to ask for an article to be published in the hope that he can find out more about the Campbell family. Graham says, “Recent phone directory and electoral roll listings of the above family members seem to conflict as to their current addresses and I am hoping that they may contact me”.If you are a Campbells family member or if you have any information that you think may help Graham with his search please email him at [email protected].

The Fountaindale School Charity Day on Sunday 4th. September was also well patronised and the good weather on the day enhanced the atmosphere in and around the pub. Welbeck Lions Football Club continue to recruit for their junior and senior teams and welcome interest from all comers. Contact Graham Hall on 07791 155891 or Caren Hufton on 07549 400785 for more information. The Football Club recently staged a Girls Football Competition and a further one is planned for the spring. The Probation Service have been active in grass cutting and litter clearance around the sports facility on Elkesley Road. However it is disappointing to report that dogs fouling the sports areas of both football and rugby is becoming prevalent once more and this always creates concerns for public health. Further support is being sought from the Council to prevent this recurring problem. The Action Group would like to thank everyone who have shown support for the activities at The Three Lions and elsewhere in the village. Graham Hall. Nick Sharratt, a former pupil of the Joseph Whitaker School in Rainworth, was in Mansfield to open a colourful, humorous and hands-on exhibition of his work ‘Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants – The illustrated World of Nick Sharratt’ which is on show at the museum until 12 November. During the opening event, the award-winning artist met his fans and signed some of the hundreds of books he has illustrated, including Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker books as well as books by other best-selling authors, including Jeremy Strong, Michael Rosen and Julia Donaldson. The exhibition allows visitors the chance to meet a host of characters illustrated by Nick, including Tracy Beaker, Daisy, Hetty Feather and Pirate Pete and find out about his childhood and what inspired him to become an artist.

Among the criteria to be eligible for a grant of between £1,000 and £1,500, businesses must be based locally and employ fewer than 250 staff. The apprenticeship opportunity has to be a newly created position for an apprentice aged between 16 and 24 and who lives locally. The money can be used in any way to support the apprenticeship position.Alexsa Beauty and Holistic Studio, in Mansfield, is one company that has been taking advantage of the scheme and was awarded £1,500. The business, which has been established for 16 years,  has taken on a number of apprentices over the years and has recently used the grant to help fund extra training for their latest apprentice, Kimberley Perry.Jenny Dunville, owner of the salon,  said: “This grant has made a huge difference. It has enabled us to provide Kimberley with other training courses not covered by her college course which has had a direct impact on the apprentice by increasing her skills and abilities beyond her initial training and we could not have done this without the funding.”

Kimberley added: “I feel I have learnt more by doing an apprenticeship than I would have done by just doing the course.“My confidence has improved, my communications skills have improved and I know much more because I started at the bottom so my experience is broader.”Portfolio Holder for Regeneration Cllr Dave Saunders said: “I hope local businesses take full advantage of this pot of money and that it will encourage businesses who are toying with the idea of taking on an apprentice to take the plunge. “In the case of Alexa, it has not only helped their apprentice, Kimberley, acquire extra skills not covered in her college courses, the businesses has also benefited from having an employee who has extra qualifications - everyone is a winner!”

For details about the grants call: the council’s regeneration service on 01623 463152 or email [email protected].

Don’t miss out on Apprenticeship Grants Businesses who want to take on apprentices in the Mansfield district are being reminded that they could qualify for grants of up to £1,500 to support these positions on a first-come-first-served basis.

In a recreation of his studio, visitors can also have a go at drawing a selection of his characters using a light box. There is an interactive touch screen where they can create their own digital ‘Sharracter’ and a wipe-clean wall to draw their own Nick Sharratt inspired picture.

Youngsters can also dress up in a selection of costumes and enjoy a reading area, with specially designed rugs and beanbags, where they can sit and enjoy some of the 250 books that Nick has illustrated and 40 that he has also written.

The exhibition also features work from Nick's days at St Martin's College of Art, where he studied graphic design, as well as his first commissions and examples of his illustrations and packaging designs for well-known magazines and retailers, work he did before he moved into children's book illustration.

Fans flock to meet Tracy Beaker artistYoung fans of well loved children's books flocked to Mansfield Museum on Saturday 17 September to meet the artist behind the illustrations.

His numerous awards include the Children's Book Award, the Nestlé Children's Book Award, The Right Start Award (book category), the Under Fives non-fiction She/WH Smith Award and the Educational Writers Award. He was the official illustrator for World Book Day in 2006. A number of these awards are on show in the exhibition, including his coveted gold Blue Peter badge!

Portfolio Holder for Cultural Services and Town and District Centres Cllr David Smith said: "This is a superb exhibition and it is great that it has come to Mansfield because it is touring only 12 places around the country.

"There is lots for youngsters to see and do in this free exhibition so why not spend some quality family time and bring the kids down and let them explore these lovely books and their own creative side."

From 1st August 2016, smoking in children’s play areas, cycling through the pedestrianised town centre and the use of and sale of “legal highs” (drugs that are now illegal) were banned by Mansfield District Council under a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO).This will build on existing orders which are currently in force in the district and cover issues such as dog control, dog fouling, preventing the consumption of alcohol in designated public places, and ordering the dispersal of groups in certain areas. The new powers, approved by the full council on 26 July 2016, enable authorised council staff to: • Disperse groups if they are causing (or are likely to cause) nuisance, alarm, harassment or distress to any other person in the town centre (including Commercial Gate and Titchfield Park) and Nottingham Road Leisure Park

• Prohibit urinating, defecating and spitting in any public place in the district

• Require anyone walking a dog to have the means to pick up dog faeces

• Prohibit cycling in the pedestrianised area of the town centre

• Prohibit the use, sale or supply of psychoactive substances and new, now illegal, drugs (formerly known as legal highs)

The changes mean new signs will be going up around the town warning of the new powers and offences.People who flout the new rules could be handed a £100 fixed penalty notice and up to a £1,000 fine if the case goes to court. But there will be a 'grace period' of three months when the police and authorised council officers will warn offenders rather than issuing a fine. This is only where new powers are being introduced - including smoking in children’s play areas and the need to carry a suitable receptacle for collecting dog faeces.   Portfolio Holder for Public Protection Cllr Mick Barton said: “We want people to feel safe and secure in Mansfield and we believe the vast majority of people will be supportive of these measures and will abide by them.“The issue of people riding their bicycles in a manner which causes alarm or distress in the pedestrianised areas in Mansfield has been a long-standing problem, with complaints raised by members of the public and market traders.“So-called legal highs were recently made illegal and these new powers will reinforce this. We have evidence from the police that the use of these new substances was implicated in numerous incidents of anti-social behaviour last year.“The new powers will enable us to tackle these issues and make Mansfield a more welcoming place.”More details about the PSPO, including maps about where it is in force, can be found on the council's website at http://www.mansfield.gov.uk/pspo

The award recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.Among the seven awards for open spaces owned by Mansfield District Council, announced today (21 July 2016), were five parks - Yeoman Hill, Carr Bank, Titchfield, Peafield, King George V - which retained their prestigious Green Flags.

The council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Cllr Andrew Tristram, said: “This is fantastic news - these open spaces are our own magnificent seven! We are especially delighted that two of the council’s Local Nature Reserves have this year reached Green Flag status and this is something we will be aiming to build on in the future.“The success in retaining these accreditations and earning two new ones, reflects the great efforts of the council’s parks team who have been working hard to ensure that these open spaces were at their best when the judges came to view them.

“I would also like to thank all the friends groups and volunteers who do so much in our parks and open spaces, too. Their help is invaluable and we really appreciate everything they do.”The Green Flag Awards are an international benchmark for parks and green spaces which have been running since 1996. They provide the level of quality against which parks and green spaces are measured and aim to encourage well maintained areas with high environmental standards. The Flags are awarded annually and the announcement of this year’s award winners comes in the same week that thousands of people up and down the country are enjoying Love Parks Week (15 July to July 24), an annual celebration of the country’s green spaces and the community groups that bring them to life. Anyone who would like to get involved as a volunteer at any of Mansfield’s parks and open spaces can call Andy Chambers on 01623 463510.Pictured above is The Carrs Local Nature Reserve and below is the Quarry Lane Local Nature Reserve.

Council Sets Out Vision for the FutureMansfield District Council has updated its corporate vision and priorities for the next three years.Approved by the council on 26 July, the authority has now adopted an overall vision to maintain a safe and caring district where everybody can succeed. It has three priorities which aim to create: • A thriving, vibrant and sustainable district; • Strong, safe and resilient communities; • A clean and welcoming environment. These targets will be pursued with fairness and equality at their core and within the financial challenges the council faces. In delivering its main aims, the council wants to promote equality of opportunity through a culture of openness, fairness and transparency, enabling local people to hold the council to account. These priorities will also consider the needs of vulnerable people in their delivery. The authority also recognises that it faces financial challenges and will need to maximise its resources through efficiencies, attracting external funding and by generating income.

Elected Mayor Kate Allsop said: “This revised set of priorities helps the council to plan and budget for the rest of the current administration’s term of office.“As a council we have to take into account any changes facing us in terms of new national government policies and changes to regional policies and priorities.“We also look at other factors including changes to our local demographic, environmental and economic circumstances.”

Some of the key priorities • Creating a thriving and vibrant district, celebrating and promoting its market, town centres, shops, leisure and heritage attractions. • Regeneration to encourage the provision of good quality housing, retail and commercial developments as well as supporting businesses to thrive and set up in the district. • Helping local people enhance their skills through apprenticeship and graduate programmes. • Encouraging healthier lifestyles to help residents to live longer In Mansfield where in some parts of the district life expectancy is more than five years below the national average. The council wants to help residents live more active lifestyles with increased participation in sport and encourage smokers to quit tobacco. • Enabling people to live and enjoy independent lives through provision of good quality affordable housing in neighbourhoods that are safe, clean and attractive. • Ensuring the quality of Houses in Multiple Occupation. • Tackling homelessness by linking with the wider health and well-being agenda, identifying links with mental health and working in partnership with health providers. • Providing high quality green spaces and working in partnership with voluntary and community groups to achieve this. • Tackling climate change by reducing its own carbon footprint, increasing recycling rates and encouraging ‘green industries’ and alternative energy sources.

More details about these priorities can be found on the council’s website in delegated decision made by Mayor Allsop on 14 July before being approved by the full council on 26 July.

Green Flag Success for Mansfield’s ‘Magnificent Seven’Two Local Nature Reserves - The Carrs, in Warsop and Quarry Lane, in Mansfield - are among a ‘magnificent seven’ parks in the Mansfield district which have won Green Flag Awards.

A Grand Tour of The Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth19 March – 23 October 2016From the Grand Tour of the 2nd Earl in the company of his tutor, the famous philosopher Thomas Hobbes, to Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire’s exile on the continent, ‘A Grand Tour of the Devonshire Collection’ looks at what they saw, where they went – and what they and their contemporaries bought. The exhibition will also demonstrate the impact of the Grand Tour at home through the introduction of new ideas and styles of art and architecture. This includes the overthrow of Baroque by Palladianism, triggered by the travels of Inigo Jones and later, the 3rd Earl of Burlington (father-in-law of the future 4th Duke of Devonshire). As part of ‘A Grand Tour of the Devonshire Collection’, the Old Master Drawings Cabinet hosts displays of artists’ impressions of what Grand Tourists saw on their travels. This will start with ‘Rome in Ruins’ – an evocative collection of drawings by Sebastian Vrancx, previously unseen at Chatsworth. The exhibition is part of The Grand Tour season two, part of the Cultural Destinations programme.
