The City of Tacoma closed the Puyallup River Bridge to vehicular and pedestrian traf� c Friday due to structural damage, according to a statement re-leased by City of� cials. City of Tacoma Public Works crews installed detour routes to divert traf� c, and the closure will be in effect until further notice.
In May 2014, City of� cials cited safety concerns when they reduced maximum vehicle weight restric-tions from 18 tons to 10 tons on the 88-year-old bridge (of� cially recognized as the Eells Street Bridge, but more commonly known as the Puyallup River Bridge) located near Portland Avenue and linking Tacoma to Paci� c Highway in Fife (see "***UPDATE*** Tacoma to further restrict weight limits on Puyallup River Bridge," Tacoma Daily Index, April 30, 2014). The City previously reduced load limits on the bridge in 2009 (see "Load limits will soon be enforced on Puyallup River Bridge," Tacoma Daily Index, Oct. 13, 2009).
Last year, City of� cials reported nearly $40 million in funding was secured to begin a project to replace two of the bridge sections, and the City has applied for additional grants to continue work on four remaining sections in the future. The remaining sections could cost approximately $100 to $110 million.
The Puyallup River Bridge is one of several local bridges that needs or has undergone rehabilitation work. A $10.5 million project is under way to reha-bilitate the Tacoma Avenue South Bridge, which was built during the 1930s (see "City awards $10.5M con-tract to repair aging Tacoma Avenue South Bridge," Tacoma Daily Index, Oct. 1, 2014). In July 2014, City of� cials cited safety concerns when they announced a plan to close the century-old East 11th Street Bridge, which spans the Puyallup River near the Port of Ta-coma tide � ats (see "City of Tacoma to close East 11th Street Puyallup River Bridge," Tacoma Daily Index, July 1, 2014; and "Tacoma's East 11th Street Bridge will close Friday," Tacoma Daily Index, July 15, 2014). The century-old Murray Morgan Bridge re-opened to vehicles and pedestrians in 2013 following a $57 million rehabilitation project (see "Of� cials gather to of� cially re-open Tacoma's historic Murray Morgan Bridge," Tacoma Daily Index, Feb. 15, 2013). In May 2012, the Hylebos Bridge spanning Blair Waterway on East 11th Street near the Port of Tacoma tide � ats re-opened after a failed drive shaft left the double-bas-cule bridge platforms upright for more than a decade (see "Year In Review: Hylebos Bridge Re-Opening," Tacoma Daily Index, Dec. 31, 2012).

the Milroy Bridge over the Puyallup River at 66th Avenue East and River Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Weds., April 15, to allow crews to perform a detailed structural in-spection and general maintenance. Motorists should use an alternative route during the clo-sure.
Crews from Pierce County Public Works and Utilities and the Washington State Department of Transportation will inspect the condition of the bridge's structural components, perform rou-tine maintenance, and assess the structure for future maintenance needs. Some of the structur-al components can be accessed only with special equipment, such as an under-bridge inspection truck, which necessitates closing the roadway.
Pierce County road crews will make surface repairs to the concrete bridge deck, as well as � x any damage to guardrails and sidewalks. This work is performed every other year as part of Pierce County's bridge inspection program that ensures the safety of the traveling public and the longevity of the county's transportation in-frastructure (see "Pierce County's Milroy Bridge to close April 17 for inspection," Tacoma Daily Index, April 12, 2013).
The Milroy Bridge is a steel truss bridge that connects state Route 167 (River Road East) and North Levee Road East at 66th Avenue East. The bridge was built in 1931 and carries approx-imately 10,500 vehicles a day. Last year, Pierce County implemented weight restrictions on the bridge (see "Pierce County Council OKs weight restrictions for Milroy Bridge," Tacoma Daily In-dex, May 7, 2014).
