What is Numicon?

Numicon is a maths teaching programme that uses a series of structured images to represent numbers. Children enjoy the Numicon approach, which plays to their strong sense of pattern. Their enthusiasm and increased confidence leads them to persevere. This in turn leads to deeper understanding and raised achievement.

What is Numicon?

• Multi- sensory resource that supports teachers and pupils in the development of a deep understanding of mathematical concepts within A Curriculum for Excellence

Why use Numicon?

Why use Numicon?

• Makes numbers real – pupils can touch and see them (Subitising)

• Makes number relationships real• Helps teachers to “see” thinking and by giving

pupils support to verbalise their thinking

Why use Numicon?

• Develops fluency by using a visual, practical base to develop conceptual understanding and recall

• Helps children to reason mathematically through the use of concrete objects and spoken language to explain and justify

• Develops children into confident problem-solvers

Which kit?

• Firm Foundation – Nursery/P1• Kit 1 – Primary 2• Kit 2 – Primary 3• Kit 3 – Primary 4

This is just a guideline! The kits are very similar – it’s how you use it that counts.

environment in your classroom• Step 3 – Regularly plan Numicon activities into

your Numeracy lessons

How do you know which activites to use?

Identify which skills the pupils need to develop (milestones) I can use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division when solving problems, making best use of the mental strategies and written skills I have developed.Identify whether this skill involves patterns, numbers and the number systems or a calculatingCalculatingFind related activity card.Card 11

Task

• Look at the three tasks taken Firm Foundations kit.

• Complete the tasks.

• Decide which develop the use of patterns, numbers and number systems and calculating.
