1. Basic information

2. Objectives

2.1 Overall Objective(s)

The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the Georgian National Museum (GNM) as an institution which is able to promote culture as a major dimension of Georgia’s development, both in the country (setting standards for conservation of heritage, contribution to cultural life and education) and abroad (culture and heritage as a key constituent of Georgia’s image).

2.2 Project Purpose The purpose of the project is to initiate a systematic transfer of EU best practices and acceptation and implementation in the GNM’s activities. This will lift the museum to the international standards of performance in state of the art buildings with qualified and trained staff. This enormous capacity building opportunity will help to realise GNM’s fundamental mission - to preserve, research, and popularize heritage and support development of cultural tourism.

2.3 Contribution to the Partnership and Co-operation Agreement and the European Neighbourhood Policy Action Plan

The Partnership and Co-operation Agreement (PCA) between the European Communities and their members on the one side and Georgia on the other side establishes in article 76 that parties undertake to promote, encourage and facilitate cultural cooperation. Where appropriate, the Community's cultural cooperation programmes or those of one or more Member States may be the subject of cooperation and further activities of mutual interest may be developed.

The cooperation may include:exchange of information and experience in the field of conservation and protection of monuments, sites (architectural heritage) and museum values,cultural exchange between institutions, artists and other persons working in the area of culture.

Through the European Neighbourhood Policy new perspectives of cooperation are opened, including the possibility to provide Georgia with support to meet EU norms and standards through new modalities such as Twinning and TAIEX.

3. DESCRIPTION OF THE TWINNING PROJECT

3.1 Background and justification

3.1.1. Strategic framework

The Georgian National Museum (GNM) was established in December 2004 through a presidential decree. The GNM unifies ten of the Georgia’s most important museums, the oldest dating back to 1852, as well as two research institutions. The result of this merger is a central and professionally well provided, but very poorly housed and equipped organisation. It functions under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture.

“A museum is part of society’s collective memory. A museum acquires, documents, preserves and communicates objects and other evidence of human culture and environment. It develops and promotes knowledge and offers experiences appealing to all our senses. It is open to the public and contributes to the development of society. The purpose of the museum is knowledge for the citizens.” (Swedish Museum Definition 1994)

The establishment of the GNM sets out structural, institutional, and legal reforms in the museum sector, with the primary aim of modernizing practices to meet international standards as expressed in the definition above.

The GNM’s mission is to uphold the highest standards of research, preservation, conservation and presentation of

Georgia’s cultural heritage; to increase public involvement and awareness; both Nationally and Internationally; to maintain an effective organizational structure; and support development of cultural tourism in Georgia through its activities.

Fundamental in realizing this mission are “research, preservation and conservation of the Georgian Cultural Heritage and diffusion of corresponding knowledge.” That is the reason why the GNM would like to focus, in the twinning project, on the organizational formation, capacity building to prepare the Restoration-Conservation Centre (RCC) and the Museum of Fine Arts. The Museum of Fine Arts has in storage many significant collections consisting of objects from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages, from the Russian Tsarist and Soviet ages until today. The collections cover a broad range of objects; medieval ceramics, enamels, icons, paintings textiles, earthenware, metal ware, jewellery, drawings, wooden chariots, Qatjar paintings from Iran, miniatures, weaponry, embroidery, behind glass paintings, a large range of sculptures. The storage of all collections is foreseen to be eventually in the RCC. In the process towards realisation of this project three fields of activities have been defined for the twinning project:

1. the preparation of the renovation on the building, this includes second opinion on the risk assessment of concentrating all collections in one building, on the construction analysis of the building and on the programme and planning for the renovation prepared by the GNM

2. the preparation and execution of a Collection Removal Pilot Project

3. the training of the conservators in the fields of preventive conservation of organic, inorganic and mixed materials

The project would also help GNM meet one of its strategic objectives which is to upgrade its standards at all organisational levels. The GNM could benefit from training of the entire staff of approximately 750 employees working in the ten museums and the two research centres. The current mix of young well trained English speaking and internationally well connected staff and dedicated employees with many years of experience in the museum in their own position is already in transition. Many of the GNM infrastructures are being renovated and improved. The Sighnagi museum has opened in 2008, at the Dmanisi site the visitor centre will open in spring 2009, the Janashia museum is expected to be reopened in fall 2009, part of the Akhaltsikhe museum will be reopened in spring 2009. Several other projects are being prepared. These building activities are a great opportunity to create organisational change.

This would be component 4 of the Twinning Project. It will use the momentum for initiating the systematic introduction of museum standards and best practices. On the basis of lessons learnt from the experience of EU member states, the GNM will adopt its own approach and apply it, with the support of its twinning partner(s), to the following four priority areas:

Service to the public (reception, hosts, housekeepers, education officers, marketing and communication officers);

Loans and exhibitions (art handlers, registrars, curators, marketing and communication officers);

Commercial activities (including fundraising, sponsoring, museum merchandise and museum café / events management)

Human resources and financial management.

Part of this transfer of know-how, best practices and standards should result in the awareness of stakeholder influence and partnership opportunities. For instance in the field of cultural tourism the GNM can play an initiating role in bringing together municipal governments, tour operators and private investors with the objective that in the long run there will be a tourism infrastructure.

3.1.2 Organisation of the GNM

An overview of the GNM’s organisation is provided with the two figures below (fig. 1: Georgian National Museum Organizational Chart and fig. 2: GNM’s management organigramme).

These diagrams are complemented with a short description of each of the museums composing the GNM (Annex 3). A map is given in the same annex for easier location of these institutions.

As the project will have a focus on the Restoration-Conservation Centre (RCC) Annex 4 is presenting the composition of its four technical departments and the location of the various laboratories, which will be situated either in the Janashia Museum and in the new building (on a temporary basis, the latter will be located in the Janashia Museum and later extended into the new building).

Annex 5 relates to the training activities within this project. Main target groups have been identified and the table provides indications regarding staff count and location of these employees (Tbilisi / Regions).

3.1.3 Establishment of the new restoration-conservation centre

As mentioned above the RCC is the main objective of this twinning programme. The GNM has a building built originally as RCC around 1980. This building has, due to changing circumstances, never been used for its proper function. This building was included in an extensive restoration and renovation scheme, developed by a private sponsor for different Georgian Cultural institutions. Due to the global financial situation this scheme has been stopped for the time being. The twinning programme is focused on a phased preparation of this RCC. The activities to be developed will have concrete results that are stepping stones to the final realisation of the building at a proper time.

The concrete results can be reached for all three components of the twinning programme, due to the fact that the GNM will as of the end of 2009 recover complete availability of the building 1. This additional space can be used for temporary storage of the Oriental Collection which is urgently in need of preventive conservation measures. In order to prepare the building for this function and remove the collection from the Museum of Fine Arts to this storage, the museum has to go through all the phases and activities needed for the RCC. Thus this project will be the pilot for the ultimate goal.

3.2 Linked activities (other international and national initiatives)

Cultural initiatives taken/supported by the EC Delegation to Georgia during the past few years

The EC Delegation’s budget is fairly limited in terms of taking or supporting cultural initiatives, however, the Delegation always uses opportunities to support them, especially when there is a possibility of joint initiatives with Member States.

2004 - Support to the National Museum in organising the new gold exhibition Colchis – Land of Golden Fleece, jointly with the British Council and the Dumas Centre.

2005 - Jointly with MS a European Film Week was organised at the Rustaveli Cinema

2007 - Publication of the book “European Architects in Tbilisi” and exhibition of photographs of buildings built by European architects in Tbilisi. The author of the book is Professor Maia Mania. Jointly supported by the Council of Europe (CoE), Polish and German Embassies.

2008 - in the context of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue in 2008, the Delegation supported International Symposium on Georgian Arts entitled “Georgian Arts in the Context of European and Asian Cultures” organized by the Georgian Arts and Culture Centre (GACC) during June 21- June 29, 2008. Other contributors were - German Embassy/Goethe Institute, Embassy of Italy, Alexandre Dumas French Cultural Centre, European Foundation/ Step beyond Mobility fund, US Embassy, Harriman Institute at Columbia University/Trust for Mutual Understanding, World Monuments Fund.

Eastern Partnership Culture Programme In summer 2008 the European Commission conducted an assessment in Eastern neighbouring countries in order to identify the specific needs for cooperation with ENPI East countries in the field of culture and preservation of heritage and the related cooperation priorities and methodologies for projects. The ENPI East culture programme is expected to combine both technical assistance projects targeting capacity building and awareness-raising, and a grant-based facility focusing on strengthening regional cultural networks. In particular, the technical assistance component will be a preparatory phase to ensure that the absorptive capacity of the ENPI East institutions is at the level needed to carry out grant activities. The programme is in a formulation stage and it is expected that the call for proposals will be launched in autumn 2009.

The overall objective of the Eastern Partnership Culture Programme will be to support the role of culture in the region's sustainable development and to promote regional cooperation between civil society cultural organisations in the ENPI Eastern region and with the EU. The programme will target the following specific objectives:

Support cultural policy reform at government level, capacity building and professionalization of cultural operators in the Eastern ENP region;

Support regional initiatives/partnerships which demonstrate positive cultural contributions to economic development, social inclusion, conflict resolution, intercultural dialogue.

A - MUSE – ALL Project

In the framework of a regional initiative dedicated to access to local culture, protection and promotion of cultural diversity2 the EU is supporting a project entitled “Beyond Boredom, Dust and Decay - Museums as Life Long Learning Spaces for Intercultural Dialogue“3, proposed by the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association (dvv international - IIZ DVV) together with partners from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and the Russian Federation4.

The overall objective of this 30-months project starting in the fall of 2008 is to enhance intercultural dialogue and promote the notion of cultural and ethnic diversity in the participant countries, on a local, regional and trans-national level through adult education. The project aims at stimulating the key role of the arts as a contribution to social inclusion and dialogue in these countries through active collaboration among museums and other cultural and public-service institutions. The project specific objective is to achieve capacity building of staff of cultural and learning institutions. This will be done by making use of key concepts of adult education, transferring museums into active spaces of Lifelong Learning.

The target groups are museum staff, staff of cultural institutions and centres, volunteers (‘museum friends’ circles) involved into intercultural and educational activities in the mentioned countries.

3.3 Results

At the completion of this Twinning Project, the following results will be achieved:

3.4 Activities

3.4.0 General Activities

In addition to the activities under the four above-mentioned components, the project will organise two general activities in order to ensure some visibility of the project at the beginning and discuss the project’s impact at the stage of completion. Furthermore, in order to ensure an effective management and monitoring mechanism, regular meetings of the Steering Committee will be organised.

Activity 0.1: Kick-off meeting and installation of the project

MethodThe first month of the project will be used to allow the installation of the Resident Twinning Adviser (RTA) in Georgia. The RTA will have to be installed in his office at the GNM. He will be introduced to the BC stakeholders of the project and to his counterparts and staff. He will also hire an Assistant (RTA Assistant) through an appropriate selection procedure.

A one-day kick-off meeting will be organised in the first month aiming at launching and presenting the project to the stakeholders, the media and the public at large. In order to guarantee large public information about the start of the project, the meeting will be concluded with a press conference and a press release.

Activity 0.2: Closing Conference

Method During the last two months of the project, a closing conference will be organised at which the results of the project will be presented. The state of play in the areas of the project’s interventions will be discussed with the beneficiary, the Georgian Government, the civil society and other donors. The conference will be concluded with some recommendations for possible follow-up and lessons learned for similar projects.

EU experts will bring support in furthering the preliminary design of the future Restoration-Conservation Centre. They will mainly review studies made by Georgian experts.

Activities 2.1 Formulation of specifications for preventive conservationMethodIn each of the three domains (organic, inorganic and mixed), an EU expert will analyse the current practice in GNM and formulate recommendations. The appointed GNM’s expert in this domain will translate these recommendations in a draft manual of good practice (one manual for each domain).

3.5 Means/input from MS Partner Administration

3.5.1 Profile and Tasks of the Project Leader (PL)

The Member State Project Leader (MS PL) will be expected to devote a minimum of three days per month to the project in his home country. He/she will participate as representative of the MS partner in the quarterly Steering Committee meetings and bear – together with the Beneficiary Country Project Leader – the final responsibility for an efficient and effective implementation of the Twinning project.

The main responsibilities of the MS PL are to ensure: the overall coordination of the project; the timely achievement of project results; the timely input of resources on the MS side.

The MS PL shall: be a senior staff member from a MS museum or institution closely involved in the

management of museums; have a good command of English in word and in writing.

3.5.2 Profile and Tasks of the RTA

The Resident Twinning Advisor (RTA) will be based in Georgia to provide full-time input to the project for the entire duration of the project. His/her main tasks are:

to manage the day-to-day coordination and progress of activities of the project in Georgia; to Liaise with the BC Project Leader and RTA counterpart; to report to the MS Project Leader;

The RTA shall: be a civil servant / staff member of a MS museum or relevant public institution, with a university degree in fine arts, law, public administration, political sciences, or

equivalent relevant domain, and ten years relevant experience; be familiar with preventive conservation techniques; possess a good experience in organising exhibitions; have education and /or experience in project management;

have an excellent command of written and spoken English. An active and passive command of Georgian and / or Russian would be an asset;

experience in Phare / ENP-East countries or with similar projects would be an advantage.

In his/her daily work in Georgia, the RTA will be supported by an RTA Assistant, to be recruited and funded by the project. This assistant will provide interpretation and translation services for the project and for the RTA in particular.

Other interpretation and translation services will be procured for the project (e. g. for STEs visits, translation of manuals in Georgian, seminars and training sessions).

The Georgian Project Leader, RTA Counterpart and the three Component Leaders constitute altogether the Twinning Project Working Group which has been actively involved in the preparation of the present twinning fiche. The members of this Working Group will be the main interlocutors of the MS partner(s) during the preparation of the twinning contract and for the implementation of the project.

6.3 Steering Committee

Every three months, a Steering Committee will assess the progress of the project, verify the achievements of the outputs and mandatory results and discuss any other which might affect a smooth implementation of the project. The exact composition of the Steering Committee is to be defined in the Twinning Contract. However, the following persons should at least be a member: BC Project Leader, MS Project Leader, BC counterpart to the RTA, RTA, representative of the Twinning Programme Administration Office, representative of the EC delegation.

Representatives of other Georgian institutions (e. g. the Ministry of Culture), donors active in the field of culture, and relevant cooperation projects, may be invited to participate as observers in the Steering Committee meetings. Beyond this coordination mechanism, informal contacts with other projects and donors, for exchange of information on respective work programmes, etc. are encouraged so as to ensure the best synergy.

8. SUSTAINABILITY

The completion of the RCC construction works, which is currently envisaged to take place after the end of the twinning project, will definitely constitute a key factor to consolidate the results of the two components relating to the conservation practice (2 and 3).

Partnerships with the private sector (e. g. for the development of cultural tourism), fundraising activities (sponsorship of events, merchandising, etc.) as well as the development of outreach programmes intensifying the relationship with the public, are all deemed to strengthen GNM sustainability at large.

It is expected that the twinning project will create a strong momentum for quality enhancement in the GNM. However, sustainability of the results would probably be enhanced if the twinning partners were to maintain after project completion (i. e. without EC funding) the practice of the peer reviews initiated with the project, on an annual basis during two years at least.

9. CROSSCUTTING ISSUES

In project implementation activities, each Twinning partner is required to comply with the equal opportunities requirements of the European Union.

10. CONDITIONALITY AND SEQUENCING

There is no precondition set for this twinning project but it is foreseen that a series of activities / measures would have been undertaken by the GNM in order for the project to start in satisfactory conditions.

As regards the first component (RCC construction), it is expected that at the beginning of the twinning project implementation the following studies, documentation have been prepared, in a draft form, for being reviewed by EU experts: the SWOT analysis of the storage options, the construction analysis, the construction programming and planning documents. If their availability was delayed, this would delay the whole construction process, whereas it is expected that the twinning project should give momentum for this process.

For component 2 (preventive conservation) to be implemented in good conditions, it is expected that the laboratories foreseen to be located in the Janashia Museum during the implementation of the twinning project, either on a permanent or on a temporary basis10, will be available and adequately equipped when the project starts.

For component 3 (removal of collections), it is expected that the storage rooms, sufficient to host at least the Oriental collection, will be available and equipped when the project starts. The lead time until the start of the pilot removal case might be used for ensuring appropriate climate conditions.

For component 4 (museum standards), although a general methodological reflection will be undertaken at the beginning of the project, a pre-identification of the specific topics to be addressed in the course of the project would facilitate the mobilisation of the experts on both sides.

Further to the above, the appointment of GNM specialists in charge of drafting project documents for components 2, 3 and 4 should preferably be identified when the twinning contract will start to be discussed between the GNM and its MS twinning partners(s)

The four project components are independent one from the others.

o Component 1 should start with the SWOT analysis, the results of which may have to be taken into account in the construction programming. As well, the construction analysis may reveal issues to be addressed in the construction itself, and thus to be taken into account in the planning.

o Activities under the last three components is following the same pattern applying to the elaboration of project documents (specifications, standards): (1) joint reflection of EU and GNM experts; (2) drafting of a document by GNM experts; (3) opinion given by EU experts; (4) finalisation of a first draft and training delivered jointly; (5) application by GNM staff; (6) (peer) review and possible revision of the document;

ANNEX 3: Description of GNM institutions

1. MUSEUMS LOCATED IN TBILISI

1.1 Simon Janashia Museum

The origins of the Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia stem from the founding of the Museum of the

Caucasian Department of the Russian Royal Geographic Society in 1852. Today, the Museum

operates as a scientific and educational institution that preserves and exhibits a unique collection of

natural and human history. The Janashia museum has a wide range of collections, which cover the

history of the country, beginning with animal remains dated back to 40 million years. Among the most

important collections of the S. Janashia Museum is that containing prehistoric human remains found in

Dmanisi. These remains date back to 1.8 million years, and represent the oldest known proof of human

existence as yet discovered outside of Africa. This discovery has changed the whole theory of human

evolution. Another major collection is the treasury that contains a large number of unique objects from

different historical periods (from the second half of the third millennium BC through to the nineteenth

century AD). The collection features gold and silver artefacts and jewellery from the pre-Christian

period from Kakheti (East Georgia), Vani (West Georgia), Mtskheta, Trialeti Kurgans, Zhinvali,

Akhalgori, Martkopi, etc.

There are also departments of Archaeology, History, Ethnography, Archaeology of the Middle Ages,

Numismatic, Geology, Zoology in the museum, as well as a chemical–restoration laboratory– the only

center in Georgia restoring archaeological and ethnographic materials, as well as creating replicas.

1.2 Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts

The museum was established in Tbilisi in 1920 as the National Arts Gallery of Georgia and at the

beginning had collections of fine art. After the establishment of the Gallery, collections of fine art

from the Caucasian Museum, part of collections of Georgian Historical-Ethnographical Society, and

Church Museum were given to the Art Gallery. In early 1950s, the Gallery was transformed into so-

called "Art Museum Metekhi". In 1954 museum again changed name to become the Georgian State

Museum of Art. In 1968 after the Academy of Science’s decision, significant numbers of fine art

objects from Janashia Museum were moved to Museum of Art. The museum houses the best-known

samples of Georgian artwork. Different collections of the museum preserve approximately sixty

thousand objects. The museum is distinguished for its Georgian goldsmith pieces dated back to the

18th-19th centuries. The museum stores the works of famous Georgian painters. The museum also

hosts collections of Russian, Western Europe and Oriental (mainly Persian) artworks.

This museum has three smaller ‘House Museums’, each established in the residences of famous

Georgian painters from the 20th century. These ‘House Museums’ are situated in the capital city and

house the collections of the painters.

1.2.1 Ucha Japaridze House Museum The House Museum was established as a branch of the State Art Museum in 1988 after the death of

Ucha Japaridze. The collections include 210 paintings and 490 graphic works of Ucha Japaridze (most

of them are permanently exhibited).

1.2.2 Iakob Nikoladze House Museum In 1924 Iakob Nikoladze built a studio in his own yard. His friend, well-known architect Kalgin,

planned the studio. The House Museum was established as a branch of the Museum of Fine Art. The

collection includes 112 sculptures of Iakob Nikoladze

1.2.3 Elene AkhvledianiFollowing the death of the artist in 1975, her home-studio was bequeathed to the State, and became a

branch of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1976. The collections include a rich selection of paintings,

drawings and textiles.

1.3 The Open Air Museum (Chitaia Museum of Georgian Traditional Architecture and Lore)

George Chitaia, a famous Georgian ethnographer and academician, founded the Open Air Museum in

1966. Over a ten-year period, a team of ethnographers worked under his supervision to research,

identify and document examples of vernacular regional Georgian architecture, in preparation for their

transport to the museum site in Tbilisi. Over sixty traditional houses and subsidiary buildings, along

with furniture and other utensils, were dismantled and rebuilt on the museum site by 1976. The Open

Air Museum is located in Tbilisi, on 52 hectares of land divided into to 14 zones: 13 – ethnographical

zones. The total number of buildings presented is 70. They were purchased in historical provinces of

Georgia. Besides the buildings, over 8.000 items are kept in the collections of the museum (textiles,

precious metals, wood, leaser, metal, etc.). The Museum has 6 storage rooms.

Three regional branches in mountainous areas of Georgia belong to the Museum. These are Chazhashi

complex – in Svaneti, Shatili in Khevsureti, and Dartlo – in Tusheti. The Open Air Museum often

hosts different folk exhibitions and festivals (craft and art, wine, etc.).

1.4 Ioseb Grishashvili Tbilisi History Museum

The Ioseb Grishahvili Museum of Tbilisi History was founded in 1910 as a so-called ‘City Museum.’

In 1943, it was renamed to the Tbilisi State Historic-Ethnographical Museum and has been located in

an historical building - former caravanserai - of Tbilisi since 1984. The Museum collections represent

the history of Tbilisi, and the 20 different groups of collections, include: precious metals – 500 items,

paintings – 1300 items, armor – 87 items, numismatic – 598 items, glass and porcelain – 431 items,

cooper – 912 items, ceramics – 175 items, archive materials – 2008 items, plans and maps – 512 items,

programs and posters – 3156 items, wooden objects – 431 items, mini objects – 900 items, musical

instruments – 920 items, photos – 6400 items, archaeology – 19300 items.

2. DESCRIPTOIN OF THE GNM REGIONAL MUSEUMS

2.1 The Otar Lordkipanidze Vani Archaeology Museum-Reserve

This museum is located in the town of Vani, I the Imereti region of West Georgia. Established in

1982, and opened in 1985 by academician Otar Lordkipanidze, the museum is situated close to the

archaeological site Vani. This site is renowned for the discoveries of II-IV centuries BC mortuary

findings, including exceptional objects in gold and silver, and notably, jewellery. The museum

collections consist largely of the objects discovered during the Vani excavations, along with a

selection of objects from a former local museum and the S. Janashia Museum. One of most successful

excavation campaigns took place in 2003 –2004, when over 1300 golden objects were unearthed.

Some of these objects formed a new exhibition at the S. Janashia Museum of Georgia, named

"Colchis, Land of Golden Fleece". Other collections of the museum include metalwork (gold, silver,

bronze), numismatic items, sculptures, and ceramic objects.

Periodically the Museum organizes educational programs and temporary exhibitions of new

discoveries from the Vani site.

2.2 Ivane Javakhishvili Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum

The museum, located in southern Georgia, was established in 1923 as an archive-museum. In 1937, it

was transformed into a Local Museum, combining its archive collection with a wider range of

collections representing the history and culture of the region. Samtskhe-Javakheti is one of the

historical regions of the country that situates in the southern part of Georgia.

In 1972 Museum moved to the two buildings at the "Rabat" territory in Akhaltsikhe and it was named

after Ivane Javakhishvili. Today, the collections total over 25,000 objects. They include manuscripts

and old printed books (parchments dating to the XI, XII, XV, and XVII c.c.), archaeological

discoveries, a numismatic collection, and a significant textile (rugs, carpets) collection.

2.3 Svaneti History-Ethnography Museum

The museum of Svaneti is located in north-western Georgia, in the regional centre of Svaneti Mestia.

The Museum was established in 1936 as a Local Museum. In 1973, Svaneti was created the zonal

system of the Monument Protection and the Museum became the headquarters of this system. The

Museum collections include important archaeological and ethnographical materials, a rich collection

of the Georgian manuscripts, and icons. The collections include items donated to Svaneti churches by

Georgian kings, as well as objects originating from empires or cultures that have marked Georgian

history (Syrian, Sasanian Persia, Byzantine, etc.) Collections of the Svaneti Museum are:

archaeological collections – 2187 items, engraved and painted icons – 242 items, manuscripts – 68

items, armour – 192 items, metalwork – 292 items, wooden ethnographical objects – 650 items,

jewellery and silverware – 421 items, textiles – 37 items.

In 2003 the museum moved to the new building. Permanent exhibitions are presented the three halls,

and work has begun preparing an educational programme for the wider public.

2.4 Dmanisi Museum-Reserve of History and Architecture

The Dmanisi Museum-Reserve of History and Architecture is situated adjacent to Patara Dmanisi

village, which is located 85 km from Tbilisi, in South-East Georgia. The Museum reserve includes two

principal sites: a medieval city and church and a major palaeontology site of international significance.

The collections of Dmanisi Museum-Reserve consist of objects discovered during excavations of the

medieval town: ceramics, glasswork, metalwork, coins. There are also details of Christian architecture.

Discoveries of prehistoric animals and hominids are kept at the S. Janashia Museum of Georgia.
