PREFACE

The First Edition of this Manual was issued b the !al"utta Fire #nsuran"e $sso"iation in 1906 and was brou%ht to'date and re'issued in 1930. The third( fourth and fifth Editions were &ublished )ointl b the #nsura$sso"iations of #ndia and *a+istan in 1948( 1950 and 1953 res&e"ti,el to &ro,ide for the needs of the whole ofareas "ontrolled b these $sso"iations. The subse-uent si th( se,enth and ei%hth Editions were &ublished bFire /e"tional !o ittees of !al"utta( o ba ( elhi and Madras e%ional !oun"ils of the #nsuran"e$sso"iations of #ndia. #n the ninth Edition &ublished in 1982( a end ents and additions were effe"ted to brin% &ro,isions in line with "urrent thin+in% on fire &rote"tion te"hni-ues and to en"oura%e installation of fi ee tin%uishin% a&&lian"es alar s ste s in relati,el low ha ard ris+s on the one hand and ti%hten re-uire edesi%n of s ste s suitable for hi%h ha ard ris+s su"h as *etroleu efineries( *etro"he i"al and Fertiliser *laon the other hand( whi"h( world'wide e &erien"e has indi"ated( need "o&ious -uantities of water and o

The aintenan"e of fire e tin%uishin% a&&lian"es in an effi"ient state and fa iliarisation with all detaio&erations is essential if the a i u benefit is to be deri,ed in the e er%en" of an outbrea+ of a fire.

The Manual initiall deals with &ortable a&&lian"es and s all bore hose reels( whi"h are "onsidered as firsa&&lian"es. The re%ulations re%ardin% trailer &u &s are "o,ered ne t. 3.2 The *ri ar dut of the #ns&e"tors is to re&ort to the !o ittee on the "ondition and effi"ien" of ta&&lian"es installed as well as to ensure the re%ulations are bein% obser,ed. The will( howe,er( %i,eand ad,i"e in the aintenan"e of the a&&lian"es and on atters &ertainin% to fire &rote"tion &re,ention.

3.3 The attention of the #ns&e"tin% En%ineers shall be drawn( durin% their ,isits( to an "han%es effe"tethe &re,ious ins&e"tion or to an "onte &lated e tensions and alterations to the e istin% ser,i"es. T &ro"edure does not( howe,er( dis&ense with the ne"essit of ad,isin% the #nsuran"e !o &an!o &anies interested on the ris+ of an "han%es( whi"h affe"t the &lan of the ris+ or the details of a&&lian"es( re"orded with !o ittee.
