The William F. Slagle Dental Meeting is one of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry’s greatest traditions!

On behalf of the UTHSC College of Dentistry Alumni Association, I want to invite you to join us for the 2019 William F. Slagle Dental Meeting. Your Alumni Association Board and the College of Dentistry staff have planned an outstanding meeting. Bring your staff and learn from outstanding, nationally recognized speakers.

This year, the entire dental team: dentists, hygienists and assistants will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on courses throughout the weekend! In addition, we will have courses geared towards team building, effective communication, office design, TMD, medical emergencies, preventing restorative failures, and the opportunity to re-certify in all the required annual and bi-annual courses needed for licensure. It is the goal of the Slagle Dental Meeting to provide you the very best and most cost-effective continuing education program. In addition, the proceeds from the meeting are given back to the College of Dentistry to further support the faculty and students. The meeting has contributed over two million dollars back to our school!

If this is a reunion year, please contact your classmates and encourage them to join you. The Alumni Association will plan dinners for you, so all you and your classmates need to do is show up.

Be sure to attend our 70’s theme Welcome Party on Friday Night at the headquarter hotel: The Guest House at Graceland. You are guaranteed to have a groovy time! I encourage you to dust off your bell bottoms and platform shoes and to join in the festivities and win the best dressed award! Hors d’oeuvres will be served and the Dentones will be the featured band of the night, so let’s Boogie!

I look forward to seeing you in Memphis and encourage you to participate in your Alumni Association.

8:30 – 11:30 am Avoiding Restorative Failure Featured speaker: Lee Ann Brady, DMD3 hours CE

One of the things we dread in dentistry is case failure, and we loose sleep and stomach lining worrying about it. Cases fail for a multitude of reasons; some minor while others can be major disasters. The underlying cause can be esthetic, functional, biologic or sometimes behavioral. A large majority of failures can be predicted before a case begins, but we don’t look for the warning signs. This program will look at risk assessment in all four areas, and present a systematic approach for examination, diagnosis and treatment planning designed to minimize surprises and maximize case success.

Learning Objectives:• Esthetic evaluation and risk management

• Understanding and managing functional risk

• Managing caries risk

• Creating patient ownership

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of musculoskeltal disorders of the masticatory system. These disorders are responsible for the second most common pain complaint seen in the dental office. Therefore, every dentist should have a sound understanding of TMD so that the most appropriate care will be selected for the patient. This presentation will define the relationship between occlusion and TMD, as well as describe muscle and joint disorders, along with management strategies for each. The appropriate use of occlusal appliances will be discussed and whether it is appropriate to follow up with dental care

Learning Objectives: • To identify those pain disorders that will likely respond to

your therapy from those that will not

• Describe the relationship between occlusion, bruxism and temporomandibular disorders

• To learn what is the most favorable orthopedically stable relationship between the occlusion and condylar position for prosthodontic and orthodontic therapies

• To learn what is the appropriate use of occlusal appliance therapy for muscle pain and joint pain.

Additionally, the participant will learn simple, non-invasive critical tests that can reduce overall risks. We clearly delineate indications for emergency drug use and proper dosages, as well as demonstrate how to assemble and maintain an ideal emergency drug kit. The newest techniques for drug administration will be shown for participants to hone their skills utilizing simulation models and real drugs. Attendees will receive and review color-coded instructional cards depicting the most common life-threatening situations with algorithms providing an easy to follow action plan for both dentist and team members. We will also review the legal and moral obligations that are presented during a medical crisis.

Learning Objectives: • Discover three simple chair-side, non-invasive tests to

help avoid an emergency

• Recognize the most frequent life-threatening emergencies and know when and why they occur
