4 2005 Ram Soccer

2005 Preview

Below is a Q&A with Ram head coach SteveJones:

You return nine starters from a conferencesemifinalist. What do you think yourchances are this season?

I think the outlook for this season is verygood. We return nine starters from lastyear’s team and picked up a couple ofguys who would have started for us aswell. These newcomers will give us stabili-ty in the back and up front, and that issomething that we didn’t have last season.

You have six seniorsthis season. Howimportant is their lead-ership to this team?

As a senior it is yourlast opportunity. Theseniors know that theycan be successful inthis conference andthat confidence shouldtrickle down to theyounger players. Weare going to count onour seniors to lead theway and hopefully theyounger players willfollow their lead.

Who or what will beyour biggest surprise?

There shouldn’t be anysurprises in our return-ers because we knowwhat we are going toget out of them. It isthe younger playersthat have a chance tosneak up on people. Ifthey can do that then itwill help us out a greatdeal.

What are your biggest strengths this sea-son?

Typically, our midfield has been ourstrength, but this year our defense is goingto be a big strength. We have a very tallback line with a lot of experience.

What needs did you fill in your recruitingthis season?

We recruited a lot of forwards this seasonbecause we were playing players out ofposition last season. We also made it apoint to bring in another goalkeeper. The

last two seasons we have had only onegoalkeeper and that puts a lot of pressureon him to stay healthy and he did not havesomeone pushing him to get better.

Comment on this year’s schedule:

This schedule is as tough as it was last sea-son. We play some really good SoonerConference teams and our conference isgetting tougher each season. We don’tplay any weak teams this season. Everygame should be a test and the really chal-lenging games are at the front of the sched-ule.

How do you see theconference shaping upthis season?

You would like toalways think of yourteam as the best. It isstill probably a four-team race for the cham-pionship, betweenCollege of theSouthwest, Northwood,TAMU-Internationaland us. We were all agame apart from oneanother. I know wehave improved ourteam, just like I expectthat these three teamshave improved over theoff-season as well. Youcan also throw in UT-Permian Basin into themix, along with confer-ence-newcomer TexasCollege. It will be veryinteresting to see howthe conference playsout this season. Itmight come down towho has the home-fieldadvantage for a particu-lar game. We still see

TAMU-International as the team to beat. They have won conference the last twoseasons and made it to the regional finallast season.

Closing comments:

I am looking forward to getting everyonehealthy and helping the freshmen adjust tocollege soccer. It will be interesting to seewhich players step up early. In confer-ence-play this season we need to take astep forward and make it to the final andwin it.

RAMS LED BY STRONG SENIOR CLASS

Junior Damien McBrien will help anchor adefense that will be much improved. McBrienwas a second-team all-conference selection

last season at defender.

AtmosphereLet’s face it. Sometimes,

somewhere between classes, labs, and studying, you just wantto be with friends. No paths toexplore, no destination toachieve. Just you and yourfriends, participating in excitingcocurricular activities or seriousconversations. On campus oroff.

At the “SUB” you can playair hockey, pick up a snack at“SUB Grill”, hear some friendsplay the guitar, and search forhappenings at fort Worth hotspots on the Web. If you live oncampus, there are lounges forplaying table tennis, pool andfoosball ... or for just plain loung-ing. With vibrant downtown FortWorth just minutes away andDallas nearby, there’s plenty todo off campus, too.

Reaching for the MoonWhat are the chances of being a worldrecord-holder, a golf pro, a U.S.Congresswoman, a Broadway produceror a teacher of the year? Just ask someof our alumni. They’ll tell you that even ifyour goals seem as far away as themoon, it’s all within reach with a TexasWesleyan education.
