Antarctica, the fifth largest continent, is covered in ice. It isalso surrounded by icebergs, making it difficult for people to get to thisfrozen continent. Antarcticais the coldest region in theworld. The South Pole isits center.

The temperature inAntarctica rarely risesabove freezing. Few animals can survive thefrigid weather. Theanimals that do survive live mostlyin the waterssurrounding thecontinent.

These animals includewhales, seals and penguins. Plant fossilsdiscovered inAntarctica suggestthat Antarctica was

once warm.

Africa is the second largest continent with the second highest population. It covers about 1/5 of the world’s land area, and is home to about 1/7 of its people. Agriculture has been animportant part of Africa’s history. Africans were some of theearliest people to trade their goods with others.

There are more than 50 independent countries in Africa.Large parts of the continent, like the Sahara Desert, are largelywithout people. Other areas, like those along the NileRiver, are home to manypeople. More than 800 languages are spoken inAfrica.

This claim was shocking to many people who believed it to be a lie.

A long time ago, people thought that Earth was flat.

Thankfully, mapmakers in the years to come rediscoveredthat Earth is round, after all.

Later, the Roman Empire fell apart and many Greek ideas, like Aristotle’s, were forgotten.

In 350 B.C.E., a man named Aristotle was the first to claimthat Earth is actually round.

But it turned out that Aristotle’s claim was right.

You’re Write! The passage below describes someof the earliest forms of writing.

Read the passage and thenanswer the following questions.

Some of the first people to write lived during the Stone Age. They didn’t write letters, though. They “wrote” in pictures. As time passed, the pictures they drew developed into “picture-signs.”

It wasn’t until about 1500 B.C.E. that an alphabet was created based on sounds. It was invented in a place thatno longer exists in Asia, called Phoenicia. That alphabet is the basis for the very one we use today.

1. Describe writing during the Stone Age. How is it different

from the way you write today? How is it the same?
