IntroductionSightwordsarethemostfrequentlyusedwordsinreadingandwriting.Theyarecalled“sightwords”becausetheymustberecognizedinstantly,onsight,forreadingfluency.Manysightwordsdonotfollowstandardphonicsrulesorspellingpatterns,whichmakesthemdifficultforearlyreaderstorecognize,soundout,andcomprehend.Inthisbook,100sightwordsareprovidedforpractice.Words1–50areintendedforkindergartenstudents,whilewords51–100areintendedforfirst-gradestudents.ThewordsareorganizedbyDr.Fry’sorderoffrequency,withthewordthebeingthemostfrequentlyusedwordintheEnglishlanguage.Thewordscanbetaughtsequentially,but,dependingonwhatanindividualstudentneeds,ateachercanchoosetoskipsomewordsorteachsomewordsbeforeothers.
Eachwordisintroducedandtaughtindividually.Aseriesofexercisesdevelops,reinforces,andstrengthensstudents’abilitytodothefollowing:
• followdirections
• recognizethewordsonsight
• readthewordsincontext
• writethewordswithcorrectspelling
• identifythelettersinthewords
• writethewordswithproperletterformation
• usethewritten-outwordsinsentences
Additionalactivities,startingonpage105,encouragestudentstochoosethecorrectsightwordfromtwochoices.Alloftheanswerchoices(sightwords)canbefoundinthisbook.Theseactivitiesprovideextrapracticeforstudentswhoarefamiliarwithsightwordsandwanttocontinuetheirlearning.
Theflashcardsatthebackofthisbookcanbeusedforreinforcementandtesting.Considerpunchingholesthroughthemsothatthecardscanbeheldtogetherbyastringorbinderring.

Tracing and Writing the WordThisactivityallowsstudentstorecognizeanewsightword.Whenstudentstraceaword,theybecomefamiliarwiththelettersandsequencethatmakeupthenewword.Thisactivityalsoinvitesstudentstopracticetheirletterformation.
Circling the Word’s Letters from the AlphabetThisactivityreinforcesalphabetsequencewhileprovidinganopportunityforvisualmatching.Additionally,ithelpsstudentsrealizethemanageabilityoflanguage,inthateverywordwillbeformedfromthesesame26letters—regardlessofthenumberoflettersawordcontainsandwhatthelettersare.
Finding the Box the Word Fits IntoThisactivityallowsstudentstofocusontheshapeofthenewsightword.Itinvitesstudentstothinkabouthowthelettersfitagainsteachother—whetherlettersgoaboveorbelowthelineandwhetherthoseupwardordownwardlettersgoatthebeginningorendoftheword.
Writing the Word in a SentenceThisactivityencouragesstudentstopracticewritingthenewsightwordinasentence.Thesentenceappearstwiceonthepage.Thefirstappearanceisinthetop,right-handsideofthepage.Thesentenceincludesthesightwordwitharelatedpicture.Thesentenceappearsasecondtimeatthebottomofthepage,wherestudentsareaskedtocompletethesentencebywritingthesightwordinquestion.Note:Sometimesthewordisusedatthebeginningofthesentence.(Seepage12foranexample.)Inthesecases,thecapitalletterwillneedtobetaughtandpracticed.
