1. Introduction
a. Since United Nations declaration in 1999, World Space Week is being
celebrated as a mega public space event on Earth. Each year, more than
100 countries celebrate World Space Week, from 4 to 10 October, to
acknowledge the contributions made by the space scientists, engineers
and researchers in the field of space science, technology and application
for the betterment of humanity. A large number of different activities are
organized across the world in a common timeframe during WSW by space
agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and
astronomy clubs to promote space education and awareness. The idea is
to synchronize space events and attract greater public and media
attention towards significance that the space sciences and technology
have attained in the modern world.
b. Each year a theme is selected by the World Space Week Association
Board of Directors in close coordination with the UN Office of Outer Space
Affairs. The theme provides broad guidance to World Space Week
participants on the content of their programmes. The theme is selected to
increase the impact of world Space Week on all humanity further, by
using a uniform theme globally. The theme for WSW – 2017 “Exploring
New Worlds in Space” is an outward facing theme that serves to inspire
the World. It puts as a focal point astrobiology missions like New horizons
(NASA’s first mission to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt); feats on engineering
such as Lockheed Martin’s Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (NASA’s first
spacecraft designed to facilitate long-duration, human-rated deep space
exploration of new worlds) and efforts of New Space actors such as Space
X (revolutionary space technology projects with ultimate goal of enabling
people to inhabit other planets like Mars) and other entities with a vision
for exploration and utilization of extraterrestrial resources, such as metals
from asteroids, water from the moon, and unlimited solar energy in
earth’s orbit.
c. From the first race to the South Pole, and first solo flight across Atlantic,
to the opening of a sea route from Europe to the East, exploration and
adventures have always defined our very existence as inhabitants of
Page 4 of 57
planet Earth. WSW celebrations in 2017 will open-up avenues to improve
the vast human knowledge and awareness of the clear benefits of space
technology and its applications. This will also illustrate that our
exploration potential has no end, and that the sky is not the limit for the
many wonders of human discovery.
d. SUPARCO, being the National Coordinator for World Space Week in
Pakistan, has created a network of academic institutions, immature
societies, NGOs and public and private institutions, which together
celebrated WSW-2017 enthusiastically, participated in its activities
devotedly and, like always, made it a mega event with solo-dynamic
pursuit to promote space education and awareness in the country.

a. The details of media clippings of WSW-2017 celebrations conducted at
various cities of Pakistan are attached at (Annexure – A).
8. Conclusion
a. World Space Week (WSW) 2017 celebrations in Pakistan have shown
immense improvement in its outlook, conduct and impact. A large
number of public and media attendance has been recorded in WSW
2017 celebrations at all stations as compared to previous years.
Hence, WSW celebrations are going to emerge as the largest space
event of Pakistan which was started by SUPARCO in 2005. This year,
WSW event was celebrated in more than 16 cities of Pakistan in which
many schools, universities, students, government and private
organizations participated.
b. Pakistan has always been in top five countries of the world in World
Space Week Association (WSWA) ranking for organizing largest
number of events across the country. Pakistan has organized
approximately 474 events during WSW 2017 in 16 cities higher than
WSW 2016 events in 15 cities of the country with the support of
partner universities, colleges and schools. With the continued support
of all the sectors including government, private and public, WSW event
would soon become an eminent prominent event celebrated in
Pakistan.

(7) World Space Week 2017 – The Express Tribune, Karachi
dated 9th October 2017:
(a) World Space Week
celebrations are in full
swing in Karachi as the
Pakistan Space and Upper
Atmosphere Research
Commission (Suparco)
looks to inspire the
country’s young,
impressionable minds and give them a platform to showcase
their space science and research skills.
(b) World Space Week is celebrated annually by the national space
agency in accordance with the United Nations General
Assembly declaration of 1999. Every year, Suparco
enthusiastically embraces the spirit of the week and organises
activities in 16 different cities of the country simultaneously,
which cater to a specific, space-related theme.
(c) As humankind looks forward to investigating new heavenly
bodies and discovering planets, the week has been aptly
branded ‘Exploring New Worlds in Space’ this year.
(d) As part of the celebrations, the Pakistan Air Force Museum
played host to a Space Fair and Exhibition, held at the behest
of the Suparco administration, which concluded on Sunday
evening.
(e) Be it high-tech micro-gravity experiments to ground-breaking
radio telescopes, or short-range water rocket competitions to
simple, cardboard models of the solar system, there was
Page 23 of 57
something of interest for children of every age at the fair.
(f) Universities, colleges and schools took part in the event, open
to the general public, as academics and teachers gathered to
educate visitors and promote the cause of space in Pakistan.
(g) The exhibition also offered a chance for families to come
together and share an experience filled with wonder and
excitement.
(h) More than 30 high schools from all over Karachi participated in
a variety of competitions this year. The winners were also
awarded prizes. One of the major attractions at the fair was
the space performing arts, in which students explored their
creativity and created awareness about space by staging short
skits. Interspersed with interesting facts about galaxies and
stars far away, which were wrapped inside an enthralling tale
about alien spaceships and exploding supernovas, it seemed
as if the crowd was being treated to a mini, albeit localised,
version of Hollywood’s finest science-fiction thrillers.

(j) A few feet away was a kid’s section, where middle-school
students had set up colourful models of the solar system, and
stood alongside to narrate the story of planetary evolution to
every willing ear.
(k) The spacious PAF Museum also housed food stalls, joy rides
and jumping castles for visitors, so that everyone could enjoy
the day in its entirety and take happy, fun-filled memories
back home.
(l) Space enthusiasts were not disappointed either, as university
students displayed their innovative take on micro-gravity
simulators, robotic manipulators and refractor telescopes.
Projects relating to phases of the moon and unmanned aerial
systems were also presented.
(m) Hakim Awan, from the Institute of Space and Planetary
Astrophysics at the University of Karachi, was especially eager
to demonstrate the significance of the work that his group had
accomplished.
(n) “In the telescope we built, we used a convex lens capable of
magnifying up to 10 times, enough to detect the famous spots
on the sun,” he said. “We also take advantage of the Ds9
astronomical image processing software for enhancing pictures
in order to extract information about energy levels from them.
This telescope was featured this year in the National Space
Science Conference,” Awan explained.
(o) “My group is currently working on developing an Armature
Radio Telescope (1.4 Ghz) as well, which can detect nearby
galaxies. Using a simple dish antenna, we are close to
