Graduation RequirementsLOCAL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students must earn 48 credits in grades 9-12, for the graduating classes of 2019, 2020 & 2021, in order to graduate from Shakopee High School. Beginning with the graduating class of 2022 students must earn 49 credits in order to graduate. New requirements will include completion of a Program of Study (3-Courses) and a Freshman Seminar course. Please refer to the table below to review your specific graduating class requirements. Each student should plan to carry a minimum of six (6) classes per semester, with the class of 2022 needing to take 7 credits at least 1 semester to reach 49 total credits.

The school year is divided into two semesters. A successfully completed one-semester course will earn one semester credit. Courses concurrently enrolled with a college or university will earn one high school credit for every two college/university semester credits.

Freshman SeminarDuring the 9th grade year, all students will begin their high school experience with a Freshman Seminar. As a result of this course, all students will examine the concept of “My Place. My Path. My Future.” as they prepare and plan for the Academies of Shakopee and beyond. Can I take classes in other academies?Yes, you can explore electives in any of the academies.

What are the requirements for CIS courses?Each course has requirements set by the University of Minnesota. Please check the registration guide for specific registration requirements.

What if I need to make up credit?There are 3 options: Retake the course, APEX after school, or Summer School (Please speak with your Counselor).

What are the requirements for CAPS?You must be a junior in the top 1/3 of your class or Senior in the top 1/2 of your class, space in your schedule for 3 periods each semester and meet the requirements for dual enrollment with Normandale Community College.

How do I register for courses with an application (ie: CAPS, GLO, ITS, Unified PE)?You will register for the course and also need to complete the online application linked in the registration guide under the course name.

If I know I am doing PSEO, do I still have to complete registration at the High School?Yes, you will have a schedule at the HS until you turn in your PSEO schedule.

What if I want to learn more about a course?Read the registration guide, talk to your current teacher in that subject area, talk to your counselor, seek out a teacher in that academy, talk to friends that have taken the course.

Can I change my schedule next year?Course sections are determined by the number of students that register. Space will be limited.

If I am thinking about a 4-Year college, what should I consider when picking my courses?Take additional courses in Math and Science, Take at least 2 years of the SAME World Language, Check the admissions requirements on the college’s website for more specific information.

Who can I ask for help with my registration?Teachers, Parents/Guardians, Counselors, Case Managers, EL Teachers, Attend Registration Information Nights

Special Education English Language Learners

AVID Southwest MetroAVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness program and elective class held five days a week during the school day. It is offered to students who would like to prepare to attend four-year colleges or universities. Students participate in AVID voluntarily.

Shakopee High offers classes for students identified as learning disabled, having emotional and/or behavioral problems, mild to severe mental impairment, language impaired and other health impairments. Various testing criteria must be met to qualify for these programs. All students in any of these classes have gone through the SST process and are currently on an active IEP. If you currently have a case mananger, please consult them in the registration process.

The EL program is designed for students with a home language that is something other than (or in addition to) English. Students in the EL program learn English through listening, speaking, reading, and writing for social and academic purposes. Students move through EL levels as determined by their rate of language development and language proficiency scores. The amount and type of EL service is determined by EL level, ranging from self-con-tained English Language classes (listed below) to language services provided in co-taught content areas

The Southwest Metro Intermediate District will offer courses during the 2018-2019 school year. Each course at the center gives you job training which may be used to get a job after graduation or to help you decide what career you should study after high school graduation. Please see your counselor for more information.
