Thissessionwilldemonstratehowtoengageandmotivatestudentsthroughtheuseofanonlinestudent-centredauthentictask.ItwillgothroughDesignPrinciplesderivedfrompracticalresearchwithhighschoolstudentsthatcanbeappliedwhendesigningauthenticactivitiestoengagestudents.
DrMorrisseycompletedaDoctorateofEducation(2014)throughtheUniversityofWollongongwhileworkingfulltimeasaScienceteacheratCoonabarabranHighSchool.HeinvestigatedtheresearchproblemofdefiningdesignprinciplestoassistteachersinmotivatingandengagingstudentsinthestudyofAustralianHistorythroughtheuseoftechnologytosupportauthentictasks.
Thestudyemployedadesign-basedresearch(DBR)approachwithboththeoreticalandpracticaloutcomestoinvestigatehowanauthentictaskutilisingawebsiteresourcetoresearchthestoryofaWW1soldier,couldengageandmotivatehighschoolHistorystudents.TheinterventionwasimplementedwithYear9students.Theinvestigationexaminedthedesignprinciples,studentprocessesandtheteacher’sroleinthedeliveryandcompletionofastudent-centred,technology-based,authentictask.
Thispresentationwill:
• BrieflyoutlinetheprocessofstudyingforaDoctorateparttimebyDistanceandconductingappliedresearchwithstudentsinthepublicschoolsystem.
• DescribetheElevenDesignPrinciplestoguideeducatorsindesigningtechnology-based,student-centredauthenticactivitiesderivedfromDrMorrissey’sresearch.
• TakeeducatorsthroughtheauthentictaskforYear9Historystudents.Thistaskhasbeeninusefor9yearsandisverysuccessfulinengagingandmotivatingstudents.Thestudent-centredtasklinkslocalhistorytoworldhistorywherestudentsarerealhistoriansanduseonlineprimaryandsecondarysourcestopiecetogethertheindividualstoryofaWorldWarOnesoldierfromtheirlocalarea.Thestudentsareabletolocatethesesourcesthroughthelinksandhelpprovidedthroughtheassociatedwebresource(http://www.notjustanameonawall.com).Asthisactivityinvolvesrealresearch,theteacherneedstoattemptitbeforegivingittostudentsastherewillbeproblemsandissuesencounteredbystudents.Theactivitycanbemodifiedforusewithprimary

BehaviouralReadingresolves,retrainsand/orre-establishesthesemissinglearningbehaviours.Thetechniquesareresearchedbasedandhavebeenclinicallyimplementedoversevenyears(PhilipGruhlBehaviouralReadingTechniquesdeveloper).TheyarecurrentlybeingimplementedinanumberofprimaryandhighschoolsinQueenslandaswellasanumberofschoolsintheCessnock/KurriKurriarea,NSW.
Inessence,BehaviouralReadingtechniquesarebrainfood!Neurologicalexercises,specificallytargetingreading(includingnumberpatterns)canenhancefluency,comprehension,spelling,workingmemoryandneuralsequencing.
Duringtheworkshop,participantswillusesomeofthetechniques,viewdatashowingstudentgrowth,hearhowthetechniqueshavebeenimplementedinsomeschools,andtakepartinanexerciseonvisualising,withPhilipGruhl,asweexploretheBehaviouralReadingwebsite.

TeachingisaprofessionthatbenefitsfromacollaborativeapproachsothatteachingandlearningcanbeenhancedthroughsharingThispresentationwillfocusonhowtoestablishandmaintainsupportforcollaborativenetworksinthedevelopmentofqualityteachingandlearningactivitiesandhowtoexpandlearningcollaborationstoenhancecurriculumaccessanddeliveryusingnewandemergingtechnologies.

TheRuralandRemoteEducationStrategyreleasedinNovember2013statesthat“Childrenandyoungpeopleneedaccesstoinspiringandqualitypreschool,schoolandpost-schooleducationthatequipsthemtolivein,andcontributeto,ourcomplexandglobalisedsociety.Thisistrueforallchildrenandyoungpeopleregardlessofwheretheylive.”(p2).Since2014,theDungogLearningCommunity,consistingofsixprimaryschoolsandonesecondaryschoolhasprovidedavirtuallearningprogramforgiftedandtalentedstudentsacrossarangeofKLAareas.UsingalearningplatformincludingAdobeConnect,Microsoft365andVC,studentsfromourschoolshaveworkedwithanexpertfacilitatoronprogramsincreativewriting,science,technology,andvisualarts.
Eachprogramistailoredtotheneedsidentifiedbythelearningcommunitywithintheirstudentpopulation.Fundingprovidedthroughtheruralandremoteprimarycurriculumleadershipgranthasfacilitatedtheestablishmentoftheprogram,andin2016theteamisinvestigatingoptionsforlongtermsustainability.Thepresentationwilloutlinethestructure,aims,andoutcomesoftheprogramtothispoint,andiftimingpermitswewillconnecttoschoolsinthelearningcommunitytoincludealivedemonstration.
