Within Carroll there is a sense of commitment to a values system based on Catholic beliefs, and in this environment the educational process unfolds.

Our mission is to enhance the total growth of students. Emphasis is placed on providing quality education, involving students in a variety of learning experiences and in fostering the ability to make responsible choices. Our goal is to prepare students to meet their own needs and to meet those of the society in which they live. To this end Carroll High School provides a broad spectrum of course offerings, academic and spiritual guidance services, and numerous opportunities for

student development and enrichment. Educators in our school promote total growth of students as much by whom they are as by what they teach. It is this role modeling, coupled with instructional excellence that is the heart of Carroll’s program.

In view of the demands of the twenty-first century, Carroll High School prepares its young men and women to meet the challenges of the future. Our graduates will take their place in tomorrow’s world as responsible citizens. It is our hope that they be open to others and be able to think critically, to solve problems creatively, and to live compassionately.

The 2011-2012 Annual Fund includes gifts received during Carroll High School’s fiscal year July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012. This fund represents Carroll’s second largest source of income and helps offset the difference between tuition and the actual cost of educating a student by providing the school with crucial operating revenues. Tuition represents only 72.9% of the actual cost of education. Carroll’s tuition remains one of the lowest in the Archdiocese while its educational outcomes are among the best.

$74,157 of the money raised for Carroll’s Annual Fund Campaign was new money received for the first time, some of which resulted from a generous tuition assistance matching gift opportunity and some of which resulted from giving opportunities that arose from Carroll’s 50th Anniversary, the winter phonathon, and special memorials for loved ones.

The Phonathon was held between January 30th and February 12th – the first time a Phonathon was held at Carroll since 2007. A total of 17 students volunteered their time to phone alumni, parents and friends in order to seek their support of the annual fund campaign. The total amount raised in the Phonathon was $35,655! The students truly did their best and showed off their true Patriot spirit, dedication and enthusiasm! Thanks to the following student volunteers:

Money was also received from employers matching the gifts of their employees. For more information about matching gifts, inquire at your personnel office or contact Carroll’s Advancement Office at (937) 253-3338. Most companies ask their employees to pick up a matching

gift form from the personnel office, fill it out completely, and then send it to Carroll as instructed.

Alumni Giving by Class

This past year, our graduates contributed 68% of the number of gifts made to the annual fund as well as 41% of the total revenue for the fiscal year! Students are being transformed on a daily basis predominantly due to generosity of those on the following pages. Thank you for joining your fellow classmates in supporting the mission and goals of your alma mater. Your continued help is needed in order to sustain the school and allow other deserving students a chance at an excellent Catholic education.

This past year, in honor of Carroll High School’s 50th Anniversary, a

special class competition was held. The class with the highest level of participation, as of June 30th, was notified that they would receive $100.00 towards their next reunion celebration. After months of competition, the Class of 1966 ended up winning with a 24.5% participation rate, with the Class of 1998 close behind with a rate of 22.7%. As can be seen in the chart below, all classes truly “stepped up” and many of them gave for the first time in support of Carroll’s 50th Anniversary!

Class Competition for the Annual Fund

The Leaders of the Pats demonstrated their Carroll Spirit once again! As the 1966 motto on their class flag states: “Onward to Victory!” As soon as the 50th Anniversary year began, Jeannie (Heid) McManus encouraged her classmates to “still give three cheers to Carroll High” and be the #1 class for participation. She encouraged her class to be “ready to see it through” to the end, especially when the younger alumni from the Class of 1998 began to catch up.

So why did the Class of 1966 support Carroll High? One classmate states: “Looking around Dayton and seeing all of the schools that have been torn down, it makes me want to ensure that Carroll High School will always be around.” Dr. Ronald Swisher states: “I donate to my alma mater because it was at Carroll where I learned to have views, to value my faith, and learned to have responsibility. I didn’t realize this until many years had passed. My parents sacrificed to send me to Carroll so it is only right for me to give back.”

The Spirit of Carroll’s 50th Anniversary overtook the Class of 1998 this spring. A handful of loosely affiliated classmates took up the task in March to encourage 50 classmates to donate $50 to Carroll in honor of the 50th. Marilyn (Rupp) Cox, a Project Manager for a Cincinnati marketing firm; Andy Wiley, a Lieutenant in the Dayton Fire Department; Pete Williams, an Economic Development Professional in Greene County; and Mark Ferguson, an HRIS Manager for WorkflowOne in downtown Dayton, started small and kept it simple: $50 for the 50th. Using Facebook and LinkedIn to reach people and gain their support with one-on-one conversations and personal requests, the group quickly built steam with each donor. Soon donations were coming in from all over and fast. Alumni from New York City; Baltimore; Washington D.C.; Richmond, Virginia; Cincinnati; Chicago; Minneapolis; Denver; and even Japan were sending in their gifts and recruiting more classmates to join the effort.

The classmates were driven by the opportunity to give back to Carroll.

· Andy Wiley states: “Being part of the Carroll tradition has meant a lot to my family throughout the years and it felt good to give a little back.”

· Marilyn (Rupp) Cox states: “Any success I’ve had can be attributed to my experiences at Carroll. Whether it was college graduation, a job promotion, or the completion of an Ironman, Carroll was part of that achievement. My love of learning, competing, and succeeding began at Carroll. I want others to benefit from these same opportunities.”

· Mark Ferguson states: “Giving to CHS is just the right thing to do. I don’t believe that any of us can fully quantify the incredible impact that Carroll made on our lives during and since the time that we spent there. We each have a responsibility to make sure that others have that same opportunity that we experienced – that chance to make the best of ourselves with the help of a first-rate high school experience.”

· Lauren Grant, an attorney practicing in downtown Dayton, states: “I believe in the value of giving back to the institution that helped make me who I am today. The success of Carroll High School stems, in part, from donations made by its alumni. Donating to an institution for the benefit of the entire student body is a win-win situation for all participants.”

The Class of 1998 was also excited to support their former cross country coach and new school principal, Matt Sableski. Kevin Flaute, a Software Engineer from Beavercreek, states: “I and many others have full faith that Matt Sableski will use our donations in a meaningful and beneficial way.” Rick Bruhn, a Bank VP from St. Louis, adds: “The 50 for 50 Campaign was a perfect opportunity to honor my former coach at CHS and current principal, Matt Sableski. I know he will do great things for our alma mater.” Nate Bir, an Insurance Professional in Belmont, was also excited to be a part of the campaign to support his old coach: “Seeing Coach Sableski in this leadership role at Carroll is great; it made me want to give back and help out.” Principal Sableski wasn’t the only coach that garnered overwhelming support from the class. Mark Ferguson recruited former soccer-mates Brad Johnson, Marc Thoma, Nick Flohre, Tom Heiser, and Jon Graham to join the campaign in support of Coach Molfenter.

The accessibility of the donation page on the Carroll website also played a large role in the campaign’s success. Pete Williams states: “Our classmates loved the new website and the ability to designate their gift. The new features were crucial in gaining the support of so many people located all over the world because they could put their donation where they felt it belonged.” Kevin Westendorf, an energy sector professional from Chicago adds: “It is encouraging to see that Carroll has created a convenient and user-friendly website for alumni contributions. It took approximately five minutes to donate to the Class of 1998 50 for 50 Campaign. The website is an effective way to reach those of us who travel extensively and prefer the ability to donate online rather than the traditional method of direct mail. Convenience is King. It’s great to see Carroll leveraging this idea with its fundraising endeavors.”

The proudest moment of this campaign for the Class of 1998 was making a donation to Carroll’s Scholarship Fund in honor of their five classmates who have passed away: Josh Baker, Jennifer Huelsman, Mark Thibault, Timothy Elwood, and Nikki Swank. Their memory is kept alive by the help lent to the mission of Carroll High School.

To top it all off, the Class of 1998 is planning to hold a Marion’s Pizza Party in August to celebrate hitting the mark on the 50 for 50 Campaign with a grand total of 55 donors – just like they did in high school when they hit their goal for the Walk-A-Thon! Go Patriots!

• Pray for the well-being of Carroll students, alumni, faculty, and friends, as well as our mission.
