Wolfram electrodesThe electrodes used in the TIG welding process etc. are made from wolfram. This element has the following properties:• Highmeltingpoint(3410°C)• Lowelectricalresistance• Highheatconductivitycapacity

TheareasinwhichthewolframelectrodessuppliedbyVlamboogareusedareTIGwelding,plasmawelding,orbitalwelding,microplasma welding and plasma cutting.

AllVlamboogwolframelectrodessatisfystandardISO6848.

Tooptimisepowertransmissionandperformance,elementsintheformofmetaloxidesareaddedtothewolfram.This addition is also referred to in practice as “dope”.

Afewexamplesoftheadditionsare:• Lanthanumoxide (La2O3)1-2%• Zirconiumoxide (ZrO2)0.4-0.8%• Ceriumoxide (CeO2)1-2%

Asageneralrule,thefollowingappliestothechoiceofthetypeofelectrode:• Alternatingcurrent: purewolfram,WXelectrodeorwolframwithZrO2(Zirconiumoxide).• Directcurrent: wolframwiththeadditionofothermetaloxides.

Theselectionofsubstancesaddedalsoaffectsthewearandtearoftheelectrode.Electrodeswith2%lanthanumoxideand2%ceriumoxiderespectivelywearlessquicklythanelectrodestowhichothersubstanceshavebeenadded.Lanthanumismoreresistant to splitting than cerium.
