Harmony Fine Art Art and Music Appreciation Plans
Artist: Johannes Vermeer (yoHAHNiss vurMEAR)
Composer: Joseph Haydn (JOzef HIdin) Art Appreciation These plans organize at least nine weeks of picture study and follow-up activities for Vermeer (see suggested schedule). You can use the suggested links and resources to learn more about his life and his paintings. There are suggestions for books on the resources page. There are images of each of the featured paintings included in this ebook to use for your picture study each week. Along with picture study, I have planned follow-up activities to your picture study. There is a list of supplies needed on the resource page. A new feature of the Harmony Fine Arts art and music appreciation plans is a complete set of notebook pages to help you glean more from your art appreciation. All the pages when completed will give your child a wonderful keepsake notebook for their art portfolio. Each of the notebook pages is scheduled in the suggested plans and are explained in the follow-up activity instructions. Another new feature of these ebook plans are the inclusion of smaller art prints to use in your art appreciation. Ideas for their use are listed HERE. Music Appreciation The featured composer to go along with your art appreciation is Joseph Haydn. There are suggested CDs, online listening sources, and activities to help your family learn more about this important composer. Listening to his music as much as possible will give your family a familiarity with the sound and style of Haydn’s music. Load the music on your computer and listen during your school day, keep a CD in your car and listen when you drive around for your activities, or put some of Haydn’s music on your iPod. Although I give you suggested CDs and downloads, you can use any Haydn CD that you have in your home library or that you can borrow from the public library. Keep it simple and inexpensive. The main point is to actually take time to listen to the music with your family. There are suggested follow-up activities included with these plans and several different notebook pages to use as you listen to Haydn’s music. I have written a complete webpage on Haydn that you can view HERE. There are lots of great resources and ideas pulled together here for you to use with your family.

Suggested Books on Vermeer:
Getting to Know The World’s Greatest Artists-Johannes Vermeer. ISBN 0516269992
Vermeer’s Secret World-Adventures in Art. ISBN 3791339877
Vermeer: The Complete Paintings. ISBN 3836513773
Jan Vermeer Coloring Book: ISBN 978-3791339887. This unique coloring book is in the flavor of the “anti-coloring book” style that allows for maximum creativity. Children are given parts of scenes and then asked to fill out the rest of the page in a way that makes sense to the child. I love these sorts of coloring books that allow more than filling in the lines.

Forte—musical term that means loud
and with force. Forte is a dynamic and
tells us how loud or how soft the
music needs to be played.
Listen for examples of
music played forte in
Haydn’s symphonies.
