Rabbi Baruch HaLevi
Lean Into the DipIn his book, “The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick)”, Seth Godin teaches that in life there are always "dips" within any and every worthwhile journey.
"Almost everything in life worth doing is controlled by the Dip. At the beginning, when you first start something, it’s fun. You could be taking up golf or acupuncture or piloting a plane or doing chemistry—doesn’t matter; it’s interesting, and you get plenty of good feedback from the people around you. Over the next few days and weeks, the rapid learning you experience keeps you going. Whatever your new thing is, it’s easy to stay engaged in it. And then the Dip happens. The Dip is the long slog between starting and mastery. ..The Dip is the long stretch between beginner’s luck and real accomplishment. ….Successful people don’t just ride out the Dip. They don’t just buckle down and survive it. No, they lean into the Dip."
Whether its in our personal life, professional life or the life of a community or a synagogue - there is always a dip. Certainly this was true for the great matriarchs and patriarchs within our Torah. As I write this we are reading about Jacob as he pushes through the darkness, trying to overcome the adversity that stands between him and the man who he is to become - Yisrael - a man who "wrestles with beings divine and human, and prevails." What defines his greatness is that he pushes through the dip instead of giving up and calling it quits. He does not let go until the dark desert night gives way to the first rays of morning light.
The dip tells us we are moving toward something important. The dip tells us that we are on a journey toward something real. And, contrary to what we are often told or believe, the dip tells us that we are close; close to the end of the struggle; close to transformation from what we were to what we want to become; close to emerging from the dark night into that place of morning light.
What distinguishes the great men and women, then and now, what defines the great institutions of the past and of today, is the willingness to face the dip, the commitment to lean into the dip and willingness to push through the dip - no matter what it takes.
No matter what we have faced or will face, as a people, as a community, as a congregation - we will lean into the dip and sooner or later transcend the dip. We are B'nai Yisrael - the Children of Israel. We are Jews. We are Congregation Shirat Hayam. We are part of a great legacy and a great institution known for their ability, our ability, to navigate the dip and arise stronger and better for having made the journey. Names change (personally and institutionally) but this Maccabee warrior spirit deep within us, never has and never will.
May we each find the strength to lean into the dip.
May we each find the tenacity to move through the dip.
May we each arise from the dip transformed knowing no more darkness during this holiday season, and seeing nothing but the beautiful Hanukkah lights.
B’Shalom,
Rabbi B

Aliyot Mystery Solved...
Most, if not all of us, have taken an Aliyah (being called to the Torah). The honor of reciting the b’rakhot, blessings of the Torah, is called an Aliyah (plural, Aliyot), which means going up. Even though we at Shirat Hayam do not physically ascend a bimah, it is nevertheless going up in a spiritual way. I would also add a fine point and proper etiquette for taking an Aliyah. Although, to my knowledge it is not written anywhere, one should take the shortest route to the Torah to show one’s eagerness to take the honor and, of course, the longer route back simply to prolong the holy moment. There is also a very interesting and quite moving tradition with many families that family members rise while a parent/grandparent takes an Aliyah.
I have also been asked many times, “how do you know how many Aliyot we have to give out on a particular day?” Well, there is a set formula for this.
On weekdays (Monday and Thursday) and Saturday afternoon, Yom Kippur afternoon, Purim, Hanukkah and any fast days, three Aliyot are read. Among the reasons offered for this ruling are that traditionally there are three classes of Jews (Kohanim, Levites and Israelites) that should be represented.
On Rosh Hodesh and on the intermediate days of Sukkot and Passover, there are four Aliyot, on Rosh Hashanah and the festival days of Sukkot, Passover and Shavuot we have five, and on Yom Kippur we have six. Shabbat supersedes all the above holidays with seven Aliyot.
There are some congregations that take advantage of a provision in Jewish law that permits dividing the Torah portions into more than the minimum seven on Shabbat but not any other times, lest it waste the time of people who must go to work. These extra Aliyot (hosafot) allow one or more additional persons to have the honor of being called up to the Torah. Most congregations, however, reject this practice because it lengthens the service, and they don’t want to do that.

Memorial AlcoveWe Remember Them
The Memorial Alcove was dedicated on November 30, thanks to the generosity of Esther and Richard Salinsky. Please stop by for a demonstration on how the electronic yahrtzeit board creates a meaningful memorial experience.
If you had a memorial plaque at Temple Beth El or Temple Israel, that name is now listed on the yahrtzeit board. You may add a photo and short bio to that listing at no charge.
Pricing is available for new entries on the board. For more information about how you can create a lasting memorial for your loved ones, or to make an appointment for a demonstration, please contact Marla Gay at 781.599.8005, Ext. 27 or [email protected].

V'shinantam l'vanecha - teaching the next generation
Since teaching about the Shema at our weekly miniplex (and since having a child) I think about this often. What do I want to pass on to my child and to my students? How can I make sure that Judaism will be alive and well when I am gone?
Not that I am solely responsible for the perpetuation of the Jewish faith, or that I anticipate being "gone" any time soon, but I do feel responsible to participate in the cycle of education: learning to teach, teaching to learn, etc… It gives me a great feeling to teach others what I know, to learn more so that I can teach better and, of course, to learn from my students.
The other day, I was watching an episode of Shalom Sesame (the Jewish Sesame Street) with my 8 month old son, Ariel. He's really too young to get anything out of Shalom Sesame, so perhaps I was watching it more for myself than for him. But I found myself so moved by this program that I remember watching it as a young child.
In this episode, they showed Jewish families lighting the Hanukkah candles and as I watched it, I started to cry hysterically. I cried and cried throughout the entire episode, as Ariel looked at me curiously. Don't be alarmed; this happens to me all the time: I can start crying in the middle of a Windex commercial. But in this case, I think I started crying because it moves me to see Jewish tradition being passed from one generation to the next. I believe that my exposure to Judaism as a child lit a fire inside me, and today, as an adult, I have made it my mission to pass on what I know to the next generation.
Today, I am blessed to have many formal opportunities to teach here at CSH: I teach Preschool Music every other Wednesday morning, iShir and iShir Katan (our children's choirs), my many B'nei Mitzvah students, 6th grade B'nai Mitzvah Bootcamp, I alternate with Rabbi B teaching at our Shabbat Miniplex, and I occasionally accept other requests, from classes in Yiddish folk song, to the Jewish influence on Broadway, you name it . I try to never say "no" to a teaching invitation.
More recently, my range of students has expanded beyond the walls of CSH. A few months ago, I became a member of the faculty of Hebrew College in Newton, as a cantorial coach. I have a wonderful student who is soon to graduate, and it brings me great joy to pass on my knowledge and experience to her. In addition, last month, I began teaching fifth grade Torah Trope at Cohen Hillel Academy. I cannot tell you how excited I am to teach this incredible (and lively!) class. We are learning Torah Trope with movement, and will soon apply what we know and read Torah!
In the Shema, we are told "v'shinantam l'vanecha," that we must teach our children what it means to live a Jewish life. I try to provide our members with the tools they need to access the beauty of our tradition.

David Rosenberg and Joe Selby, Co-Presidents
100%Greetings!
When planning your end-of-year giving, please don’t forget Shirat Hayam.
Please answer the call. We will be making calls to all of our congregants who have not yet taken the opportunity to make their LEV donation. We are counting on 100% participation. If we can get 100% of our families to participate, we will not only meet, but exceed our funding goal. Help us close our funding gap and allow us to provide you with the amazing services and programs to which you have become accustomed.
Shirat Hayam is in the forefront of Conservative Judaism in the country. Rabbi HaLevi has been asked to speak at national conventions to promote radical hospitality and talk about our success. Part of this success is YOUR participation in services, programs, education and social gatherings. Help us continue to be the beacon of light that has transformed our Jewish community and is leading the way across the country.
Give from your heart. It’s your continued participation that we’re asking for. Let us know that we’re on the right track. Help us move toward the future.
Thank you for supporting Shirat Hayam,
David and Joe

Jed Filler, MAJCS, Education DirectorShalom Chaverim:
Center for Jewish Education
As you read this, we will have just completed the first (and last) Thanksgivukkah in our lifetimes. I know you’ve read a lot about it and you’ve heard plenty of jokes (some from me) about ‘menurkeys’ cranberry sauce on latkes, and dreidels that say Nun, GOBBLE, Hay and Shin.
Even with all the excitement and fun - conflating Thanksgiving and Hanukkah reminds us of one of the most important messages of Hanukkah: Keeping the ‘light’ of Jewish identity alive in places where assimilation (being absorbed into the larger culture of the society where you live) presents both benefits and challenges.
We are Americans – able to celebrate and participate fully in the development and role of government, law, and everyday life. We are also Jews – celebrating the covenant (brit) we have with each other and with God. Being able to do both so fully is a gift, and sometimes living the Jewish calendar is more challenging since we are so integrated with America’s ‘secular’ calendar.
So, in the CJE we work with our students and their families to help follow our Jewish calendar – teaching about the holidays, participating in services, and offering programming and resources designed to help our families see the world through Jewish eyes.
All of our classes have worked to make the Hanukkah party we just celebrated full of fun by preparing presentations all about the holiday. Our 5th graders are learning the Torah service, and beginning with Ayn Kamocha they have figured out how to sing it to the ‘cup’ song (I’m gonna miss you when you’re gone). And during a recent class, created illustrations of Vayetze – the Torah portion where Jacob dreams of a ladder between the earth and the heavens. He fell asleep with his head on a rock, and dreamt of a ladder, with angels going up and down. When Jacob awoke, he exclaimed, “How awesome is this place, God is here and I did not know it! I love the creativity of our children, and seeing them bring Torah, holidays and celebrations to life is inspiring, beautiful, and makes this place AWESOME!

Early Mystic Minyan - 8:30 am
As it says in the Mishnah, the early mystics would gather together and sit for an hour before even attempting to formally engage in prayer. So too at CSH we offer the Early Mystic Minyan as an option for practitioners of meditation to come and sit as we begin to open up the space of our Sanctuary on Shabbat and of our hearts in the early quiet hours before the crowds arrive. There will be minimal, if any, instruction for the first fifteen minutes. It is a time to gather one’s self and one’s thoughts together through individual prayer without words.
Renewal Minyan - 8:45 - 9:50 am
The Renewal Minyan is an attempted synthesis of keva – the traditional structure of tefillah (Jewish prayers) with kavanah – spiritual depth within the prayer itself. During the Renewal Minyan we are committed to traversing the Shabbat morning tefillot structure (Birkot HaShachar, P’seukei D’Zimrah, Shachrit), but not necessarily davening (praying) each and every prayer along the way. Our aim, again, is to strike a balance between breadth and depth, and within a one hour period that is a fine balance, to be sure.
Living Minyan: Traditional Prayers and Learning - 9:00 am
The great thing about being Jewish is to be part of a tradition that is thousands of years old! But if you can’t read Hebrew, don’t know the words, or maybe can’t carry a tune, tradition can feel a little daunting. Would you like to learn more about the traditional morning service that greets the day on Shabbat? Come and join Cantor Emil and friends in a safe, welcoming space to discover the beauty of traditional Jewish liturgy, prayer and song in a user-friendly format. You can build your knowledge and self-confidence, and impress your bubbe or grandchild. Everyone’s invited, including the tone-deaf and non-Hebrew-readers!

Chesed CommitteeKarynn Needel and Beth Hoffman, Co-chairs
The Chesed Committee has been very busy lending a hand by providing meals, rides, visits and general emotional support to the congregation, as needed. The committee’s mission is to help congregants and their families in times of crisis. They are the first responders, there to do triage until other “sources” are notified and become available.
If you want to become a part of this GREAT committee, please let us know. There is a little something for everyone to do within the Chesed Committee!
Please contact us if you know of someone in need. We can only help those that we know about.
Thank you!
