Today’s Matchup“4 Downs” with the Colonials

1 - Like Liberty, Robert Morris has opened the 2016 season with a 1-3 record. The Colonials picked up their first win of the year last Saturday by a 21-19 count over Malone. Robert Morris is seeking its first winning season since 2010, when the Colonials went 8-3, including a victory over Liberty, a NEC title and the team’s first FCS Play-offs appearance.

2 - Liberty and Robert Morris have split their first two head-to-head meetings, with each team winning on its home field (RMU in 2010 and Lib-erty in 2011). Robert Morris has only had two head coaches during its 23 seasons of football. Joe Walton coached the team for 20 years and John Banaszak, a three-time Super Bowl cham-pion for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is now in his third season at the helm. This will be the second straight week featuring a Big South-NEC clash. The Big South’s Kennesaw State posted a 36-28 victory at defending NEC champion Duquesne a week ago.

3 - The Colonials are playing south of the Ma-son-Dixon line for the first time in three years. Their most recent visit to the South resulted in a 37-31 double OT win at VMI on Sept. 28, 2013.

4 - Freshman LB Gee Stanley ranks No. 4 nation-ally with 5.5 sacks through four games. Robert Morris has been up-and-down on special teams this season, missing all four of its FG tries but re-turning both a kickoff and punt for a TD.

Last Meeting with Robert Morris

Sept. 10, 2011No. 24/21 Liberty 38, Robert Morris 7Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium)

• No. 24/21 Liberty opened its 2011 home sched-ule with a 38-7 victory over Robert Morris, avenging a 2010 setback to the Colonials.

• Mike Brown threw for 209 yards and 2 TDs while rushing for 43 yards and 2 more scores for the Flames.

• The Flames’ defense recorded four sacks and three interceptions, keeping Robert Morris off of the scoreboard until 10:25 remained in the game. By that time, Liberty had opened up a 28-0 advantage.

• Kevin Fogg accounted for two of Liberty’s inter-ceptions and also ran back a kickoff 88 yards for a score.

• The Colonials’ Justin Brooks was the top ground gainer on the night, carrying the ball 22 times for 86 yards.

Colonial Connections• Liberty freshman NG DeCarlo Hamilton grad-

uated from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla. The school is also the alma ma-ter of Robert Morris redshirt freshman DB Tevaul Brown and sophomore WR Warren Robinson.

• Robert Morris Head Coach John Banaszak was named AFCA National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2013, his final season as an assistant for the Colonials. The next year, Liberty Defensive Coordinator Robert Wimberly won the same honor for the Flames.

• Much of the Robert Morris coaching staff is fa-miliar with Liberty. Head Coach John Banaszak and assistants Scott Farison, Bill Hurley, Andrew Richardson and Patrick Shepard were all on staff for both previous meetings with the Flames (2010 and 2011).

• Meanwhile, Robert Morris Running Backs Coach Myles Russ totaled 229 all-purpose yards and three TDs, including the game winner with 22 seconds left, in RMU’s 2010 victory over Liberty. Current Robert Morris Inside Linebackers Coach Alex DiMichele had 13 tackles in that game.

Liberty vs. the NEC• Liberty is 4-1 all-time versus NEC foes, including

4-0 in Lynchburg.• The Flames are 1-0 against Bryant, 1-1 versus

Robert Morris and 2-0 against Saint Francis (Pa.).• Liberty’s most recent matchup with a NEC foe

came on Sept. 20, 2014 at Williams Stadium. No. 24 Liberty handed No. 25 Bryant its first loss of the season, 38-21.

Milestone Watch1 - After recovering his fifth career fumble during

the season opener at Virginia Tech, Erwin Des-sources’ next fumble recovery will move him into a tie for second place on Liberty’s all-time list.

2 - Nick Newman is two tackles away from 200. The senior would become the first Flame with 200+ career stops since both Jacob Hagen and Nick Sigmon reached the milestone in 2014.

4/11 - At SMU, Dexter Robbins joined current Flames Nick Newman and Wesley Scott as mem-bers of the 100-tackle club. JaRon Greene and Tyrin Holloway are both nearing the century mark as well. Greene is four tackles shy of 100, while Holloway needs 11 stops to reach 100.

4a - Dante’ Shells has hauled in a touchdown re-ception in each of the last three games. If he does so on Saturday, Shells would become the first Flame to catch a touchdown pass in four straight contests since Darrin Peterson (Nov. 1-22, 2014).

4b - Tyrin Holloway has intercepted a pass in three consecutive games. If he picks off a pass on Saturday, he would become the first Liberty player with an interception in four straight games since Jacob Hagen (Nov. 2-23, 2013).

A Liberty Win Would ...• Give the Flames a 2-1 edge in the all-time head-

to-head series with Robert Morris.• Boost Liberty’s record to 5-1 all-time against NEC

opponents, including 5-0 in Lynchburg.• Enable the Flames to avoid their first three-game

losing streak since starting the 2012 season 0-4.• Keep Liberty from suffering back-to-back home

defeats for the first time since opening the 2012 home slate with losses to Norfolk State and Le-high.

• Improve the team’s record in home games under Turner Gill to 21-6.

• Give the Flames an all-time record of 106-47 at Williams Stadium in the team’s 28 years of com-petition at the facility.

• Send Robert Morris to its fifth consecutive road defeat.

Quick Hitters• Liberty is 6-4 in its last 10 meetings with FCS Top

25 teams. The stretch was highlighted by a 15-14 win at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22, 2014, the Flames’ first-ever victory over a No. 1 team in program history.

• The Flames are 50-11 in home games at Williams Stadium since the start of the 2006 season, al-though their six-game home winning streak was halted last week against Jacksonville State.

• Liberty has recorded 10 straight winning seasons, dating back to 2006. That makes the Flames one of five active FCS programs with a current streak of 10 or more in a row, along with Harvard (15 seasons), Jacksonville State (13), New Hampshire (12) and McNeese State (11).

• The Flames’ 41-33 win at Georgia State on Oct. 3, 2015 was the team’s fourth all-time victory over an FBS opponent and second in as many years. The Flames’ previous FBS wins came against Eastern Michigan (1989), Ball State (2010) and Appalachian State (2014).

• The Flames have captured seven Big South titles in the last nine years, entering the 2016 cam-paign. They are 40-9 in conference games since the start of the 2007 season.
