At this time, the Special Needs Director or Camp Inclusion Coordinator will contact the family to discuss a proper plan.

“My son struggled with his communication and social

skills. Camp was a suggestion given to me to help

improve upon these skills. I never thought that he would be able to show such progress in such a

short period of time. This is 100% attributed to the

staff and experiences that my son had during summer

camp at the Darien YMCA. He was excited everyday to

go and would come home excited to show me the new

things he learned or created. The size of the smile on his face truly showed his happiness”

“Darien YMCA is a beautiful

facility where my daughter

attended SummerCamp for two

weeks. She enjoyed tremendously

the swimming, sailing, playing

outside and seeing the gorgeous

view of the Holly Pond. We are

definitely considering coming

back next year for another

happy and healthy summer.”

SPECIAL NEEDS Ages: 14 +INNOVATIVE VOCATIONS SUMMER PROGRAM

This summer program was designed to teach teenage students with special needs practical life skills that will allow them to be an integral part of summer camp. An extension of our school year program, students will broaden their social, functional and task-oriented skills while working with the camp staff and campers in their daily activities.

The Innovative Vocations Summer Program will focus on helping the summer camp staff by creating seam-less transitions for summer activities. Earning Y-Bucks for end of the day cash-in rewards, our students will learn time management skills with task-oriented goals. Summer Camp consists of multiple groups of differ-ent ages who fill their days with various games and activities. The Innovative Vocations program students will ease the stress of the staff and give them more time with their groups by setting up and taking down specific activities. They will assist our program specialists with sports, arts & crafts, STEM and more.

Throughout the day, they will also have time to socialize with their group, as well as the other camp groups. They will have the opportunity to swim & do boating if they choose.

The program will be individually tailored to each participant’s schedules, interests and abilities. Each partic-ipant will have their own binder with daily schedule and specific tasks. They will be assisted when needed by volunteers and peers.

COUNSELOR IN TRAINING (CITs) • Ages: Completed 8th, 9th, or 10th Grade

Our Counselor In Training program is a great step for 8th, 9th and 10th graders to learn what it takes to be a Camp Counselor. The goal of the CIT Program is to find participants that have a true desire to work with children. It is our goal to teach you through hands on experience the aspects of working with children at camp. This will include planning and implementing activities, organization of campers, discipline and at times parent interaction. Each CIT will be assigned a group each session. They will work with the counselors of their group with all the day to day operations of camp and will participate in all activities. The CIT. Coordinator will ask the counselors to evaluate the CIT that was assigned to their group and those evaluations will be used when hiring CIT’s to be paid staff members in the future.

Returning CITs may register during regular registration times. No application is needed.

New CIT’s must fill out the CIT Application and return it to Suzanne Richards. Once applications are received, applicants will be contacted by the CIT Coordinator to set up a short interview beginning in April. You will then receive a Welcome Letter and payment information. Applications can be found on our website or at the YMCA front desk.
