Curtis OvercashOttawa, Illinois Obit copied from the Peoria Journal Star
April 15, 1952 -- April 26, 2018 (Age 66)
Curtis A. Overcash, 66, formerly of Canton and Dixon, passed away Sunday, August 26, 2018, at his home in Ottawa.
Curtis graduated from Farmington High School in 1970. He then graduated from Spoon River College in 1972, and lat-er from the University of Illinois in Agriculture Education and was a member of the Farm House Fraternity. He began his career as an agriculture teacher at Princeville High School. He started as a salesman for FS, and grew within the compa-ny through multiple transitions, reaching the level of Credit Manager.
Together with Greg Deakin, he founded a national purebred sheep magazine called “The Suffolk Banner” in 1978. He was a graduate of the Kenneth Gregg School of Auctioneering in Texas. He was an active partner and auctioneer for Heartland Livestock Services at purebred sheep auctions throughout the country. He retired from GRAINCO FS Inc. in January of 2018 to a full-time job of farming and auctioneering.
Throughout his life, Curt remained faithful to his agricultural roots. He enjoyed participation in 4-H, FFA, charity auctions, including the Friendship Festival livestock auctions, and he was a longtime MC at the Fulton County Fair. He will be remembered for his engaging personality, his keen sense of humor and his rolling chuckle that lit up the room. He felt blessed and honored to farm alongside his dad, but most of all, Curt cher-ished his children.
Memorials may be made to the University of Illinois Farm House Fraternity Foundation or Farmington High School FFA.
With broken hearts we mourn the loss of our dear friend and colleague Curt Overcash. We as the team at Heartland Livestock Services are more than a business - we are a fam-ily and the loss of a family member leaves a tremendous hole in our lives and our hearts.
I personally have known Curt for more than 40 years - he is my friend, someone I could always count on and someone who found fun wherever he was!
Curt was a storyteller. While those stories were always en-tertaining with his unmistakable laugh intertwined, if you listened Curt was also sharing his history and traditions that he held so dear. But no matter the topic always Curt left you laughing!
Curt loved the auction business and he learned from and re-vered the greats in the business and with his engaging per-sonality he became one of those that was revered by the gen-eration coming behind him.
Curt’s wicked fast sense of humor, his laugh, his deep gravel-ly voice, and his perfectly timed “Larry Mead impersonation” (sorry Larry it was good!) will be a missed more than words can describe.
But Curt’s business acumen should not be overlooked. Curt approached business from a common sense, no bull, farmer type perspective. But he also remained incredibly loyal to his friends both old and new.
Our Heartland team works together closely, we get involved with each other’s families and watch them grow. We live to-gether for 10 days every year. We lovingly call the log cabin on the Missouri State Fairgrounds our “summer home”. In the evenings lots of laughter and many stories are told and shared which rejuvenates us for the next day of Sedalia. Curt is a critical part of our culture and our Heartland personality as a team.
Sadly, it will be quieter at our “summer home” now.

We will forever miss our partner and our friend...
Curt Overcash

from Danny Westlake -- I want to shout my feelings of gratitude out loud! “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it!” I am very, very grateful you shared your pas-sion, expertise, and time unstintingly. I am grateful to have had the privilege to work with such a humble man full of love, strength, and encouragement for all of us.
You would listen, you would understand and then find solu-tions. You gave us that rare combination of loyalty, humor, and honesty. You kept us on track, laughing and true! There is an old saying that reminds me of you which goes like this: “Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing is so gentle as real strength.”
Because of your drive and leadership within the MWSRS team, the groundwork has been well positioned for the tradition to continue with assured unlimited, unmatched, positive and creative results! You made the difference Curt Overcash...... You made the difference.
from Bobby Fletcher -- I had the pleasure to sell the Top of Rockies Sale with Curt Overcash for a few years. One year, I think about 1996, Curt brought his brother Larry and his nephew Luke to the sale.
Curt always tried to entertain everybody and this was no ex-ception. He did everything he could do for Luke including tak-ing him to the mountains and rolling in the snow and having a snowball fight. That night at dinner Curt said to Luke, “Well I guess I’m your best buddy now.” Luke responds with, “Nope, little Bobby’s my best buddy.”
Sooo, Curt always referred to me as Luke’s little buddy. I really miss Curt he was a life of the party.
from Gary Saylor -- I first met Curt in the late 70’s at the Oklahoma Black and White Sale and knew right then that I had a friend for life. Dennis Wood, who is one of our Midwest sale ring men, had travelled with me to Oklahoma City and bought a Hamp Fall Ram Lamb from Curt that year.
I’ve worked with Curt at numerous sales through the years and working with Curt was never really work as we always had a good time. A story that Curt and I always chuckled about was the year that he drove down to Louisville for the NAILE only to discover that he was a week early. You never forget that one.
Curt’s unique way of working with people in sometimes stressful situations will be missed at the Midwest sale and there will most certainly be a void inside that auction block when I step in there for the first time this year.
from Billy MacCauley -- Curt was one of the kindest and most easy-going people I have ever met. Being the manager of anything is never easy; however, trying to manage the Midwest Sale is an entirely dif-ferent animal.
Curt took on this roll with purpose and determination. He always did his best to please everyone and he took pride in making everyone feel welcome: buyer, consigner, spectator and staff alike. He had a hard act to follow in Larry Mead; however, Curt was up to the challenge and did a great job! His presence will be sorely missed!
Who better to share some memories than those who shared the gavel...
