Red Oak Area Chamber of Commerce2

The City of Red Oak and the Chamber of Commerce sponsor several annual events that have become must-do

activities for residents. Local business owners take pride in their city and pull out all the stops to ensure the community and visitors have memorable experiences.

SummerAn annual golf tournament held at the

Country View Golf Course in Lancaster is open to everyone, with all proceeds going towards the Chamber’s operating budget.

The City of Red Oak, the Chamber of Commerce, and several local organizations and businesses combined their efforts last year to produce the city’s first Red Oak White and Blue July 4th Celebration, held at the high school football stadium. The celebration includes live music and entertainment along with programs to honor the troops and a spectacular fireworks show.

FallFounders Day is an annual two-day

celebration in September and the biggest event on the Chamber calendar. Kicking off with dancing in the street at Main Street Plaza on Friday night, the festivities continue on Saturday with a parade and a festival at Live Oak Park, including musical entertainment. Booths feature food, arts, crafts, and jewelry, and children enjoy a variety of activities, from bounce houses to pony rides and a petting zoo.

Taste of Red Oak, hosted by the City in September, was a benefit inaugurated in 2007 to raise funds for North Ellis County Outreach. The event offers a chance to sample food from a dozen area restaurants while enjoying live music, art exhibits, and a silent auction. Participating restaurants in 2007 included Bubba’s BBQ, Joe’s Burrito, Fred’s Steakhouse, Whataburger, and Starbucks, among others.

Another big fundraiser for the Chamber is the Annual Auction. In October 2007 the event featured a Moonlight Serenade theme and brought in more than $50,000. More than 250 silent and live auction items were up for bid, including a variety of merchandise from local merchants, trips, and a diamond ring appraised at $3,000. Funds netted from the event are used to cover Chamber operating costs and support other charities and events held throughout the year.

WinterThe Second Annual Festival of Trees

was held Nov. 24–Dec. 1, 2007, at Red Oak Elementary. Admission is free, and proceeds from the sale of decorated trees and wreaths benefit the Red Oak Independent School District Education Foundation. Businesses, churches, schools, and city organizations donate the decorated trees, which are sold to the highest bidders. A special room for children allows them to make “snow angels” on the floor and take home a souvenir ornament. Other activities include photos with Santa and a variety of entertainment and musical performances throughout the event.

Christmas Downtown Red Oak is a highly anticipated community event put on by the Chamber, Parks and Recreation Department, and downtown merchants. The annual celebration includes a parade, holiday food and drinks, entertainment from area groups, and a visit from Santa.

Municipal CenterCommunity events hosted by local

organizations frequently take place at the city’s modern and conveniently located Municipal Center, which can accommodate 300 people. It may be rented for wedding receptions, family reunions, and private business functions.

• Red Oak was originally called “Possum Trot”

because of the proliferation of possums in

the area. After Ellis County was formed in

1849, the town was renamed Red Oak for the

creek, and it became an incorporated city in

1949. Today the city’s trail system is named

Possum Trot in honor of the city’s old and

colorful name.

• Red Oak is the hometown of beloved country

music star Boxcar Willie. After a major road

reconstruction project, the City of Red Oak

designated the overpass at I-35 and FM Road

664 as Boxcar Willie Memorial Overpass in

honor of the singer, known for his hobo songs

and fondness for the railroad. Boxcar Willie

died in April 1999.

• In 1967, the movie Bonnie and Clyde, starring

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, shot on

location in Red Oak for three days. Local

resident Mabel Cavitt was on the sidelines

observing shooting when she was instantly

recruited to play Bonnie Parker’s mother. The

current North Ellis County Outreach (NECO)

Building was featured in the film as a bank

robbed by the infamous duo.

Population ExplosionFirst settled by James Patton and his

family in 1844, Red Oak has come a long way from the pioneer days when it was known as Possum Trot. With a population of 3,124 in 1990, the city has grown to 7,986 in 2007, with a projected population of 33,853 in 2010 and 63,329 by 2030, according to the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

City Manager Scott Albert says Red Oak has become one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas because of several key factors. “It has unique small-town charm, a great school district, close proximity to I-35, and it offers convenient access to downtown Dallas, DFW Airport, and Love Field.”

In response to current and future growth demands on city services, Albert says the city will be implementing several programs over the next 12–24 months. “One of our major goals is to create a premier economic development program by diversifying the tax base, decreasing the residential tax burden, and creating a healthy local economy that will sustain the community today and in the future,” he emphasizes.

Economic Plans Are in PlaceThe Red Oak Economic Development

Department has an aggressive incentive policy for industry and business recruitment. Incentives include tax abatements, land pricing, tax exemptions, relocation support, and employee training programs.

Additionally, the city is working to open up more space for development. “Red Oak currently has an industrial park that has been successful for several years,” Albert

explains. “Our staff is preparing a proposal for a professional business park unique to the southern Dallas area, yet competitive with northern sector parks.”

Red Oak leaders also know exactly what types of businesses they hope to attract. The city is ideally located to become not only a stopping point for travelers, but also a destination in and of itself. Albert says the city is aggressively pursuing retail shops, entertainment venues, shopping centers, and other commercial and business opportunities that will not only serve local residents, but also be recognized as regional, state, national, and international destinations.

“Our biggest priority is attracting new business along the I-35 corridor,” says Mayor Alan Hugley. “It is one of the busiest traffic thoroughfares in the state, and we need to develop more restaurants, retail, and entertainment venues that will entice more people passing through to stop in our city.”

Additionally, regional developments are expected to have a positive impact on Red Oak. “The Dallas Logistics Hub is going to have a huge impact on our city in years to come,” explains Mayor Hugley. “It is a development near Lancaster, just north of the Red Oak city limits, which encompasses 6,000 acres that will be used for manufacturing, distribution, and retail. In 10–15 years it could generate employment for 30,000 people. It is only natural that some of those people will come to Red Oak for housing.” Hugley notes that the long-term economic impact could parallel what happened with development in the DFW Airport area.

Including DowntownA Downtown Vision Plan approved by

the Economic Development Corporation and City Council has been implemented to turn the city’s historic downtown area into a destination point for shopping and business as well as a gathering place for community events. The goal is to provide a pedestrian-friendly environment with amenities such as water features, historic street lighting, and monument signage.

The plan has already seen a major success. Main Street Plaza is a classically designed retail office and commercial plaza in the heart of downtown, featuring brick façades and Southwest styling. Phase One of Main Street Plaza offers 45,000 square feet; Phase Two is expected to open an additional 32,000 square feet. Among those already leasing space in Main Street Plaza are Fred’s Steakhouse Bar and Grill, Snap Fitness, Plaza Hair and Spa, Candle Heaven, Kids University Day Care Center, and Dance Xpressions.

Other new businesses that have opened downtown include Heather’s Dining and Ice Cream and Unique Party Supplies.

Getting Here From There“Regional transportation will be discussed

over the next 12 months while the city is preparing a comprehensive plan,” Albert notes. “We hope to gather input from residents on the type of public access necessary to serve their current and future transportation needs. Light rail is a strong alternative due to the city’s proximity to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system.”

Red Oak employs a mayor/city council form of government. The city also employs a city manager who works

closely with the mayor, City Council, and other agencies to implement strategic plans.

Mayor Alan HugleyAlan Hugley became mayor of Red Oak

following a special election in October 2007. Born and raised in nearby Lancaster, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in business and a minor in economics. Employed as a flight dispatcher for 19 years, he is married and the father of three sons.

Hugley moved to Red Oak four years ago, and he’s no stranger to Red Oak City Council meetings, having previously served on the Planning and Zoning Commission and on the City Manager Search Committee.

Hugley notes, “One of my goals is to encourage both long-time and new residents of Red Oak to have a greater sense of involvement. Whether they serve on committees, attend City Council meetings, or participate in local charities, being active in our community can help shape its future.”

City Manager Scott AlbertCity Manager Scott Albert assumed his

position in October 2007 and has much experience handling the special problems of a

growing city. While he was the administrator in Celina, Texas, the city grew 150 percent. During his five-year term, Albert coordinated a downtown revitalization plan and helped create the Preston Road Corridor, projects that mirror closely what he hopes to accomplish in Red Oak.

Albert has a B.A. in business administration with a minor in economics and finance, as well as a master’s degree in public affairs from the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked for 16 years in local government management, including positions in Plano, Springtown, and Fairview, Texas.

Councilman Ben GoodwynBen Goodwyn, a long-time City Council

member and former mayor pro tem, was born in southern Ellis County and graduated from Texas A&M with a B.A. in business. As a commissioned officer in the United States Marines, he was a commanding officer of an infantry rifle company in Vietnam.

Following five years in the military, Goodwyn launched a career in business. Currently he is chairman of the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce.

Councilman Casey HargroveCasey Hargrove has been a resident of

Red Oak since 2001. He graduated from the University of Dallas with a B.A. in history.

Hargrove has served on the Red Oak Parks and Recreation Board. A licensed REALTOR® for seven years, he says his goal is to improve the quality of life in the city and help decrease the tax rate.

Councilman Scott LindseyA resident of Red Oak since 1990, Scott

Lindsey has 20 years’ experience in law enforcement and serves as chief of the Red Oak Independent School District Police Department. Previously he worked for 12 years with the Red Oak Police Department. Lindsey also served one year as mayor pro tem of the City of Ferris.

Councilman Eric Smith Eric Smith, City Council member and

mayor pro tem, is a native of Fort Worth, Texas, and earned a criminal justice degree from Saint Joseph College in Maine. He also has graduate degrees as a United States marshal and criminal investigator from the Federal Law Enforcement Academy in Brunswick, Georgia.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Smith began his career in politics at the age of 40 when he was elected to the Red Oak City Council. Smith says his goal is to attract new businesses and jobs to the city and to improve the quality of life for residents.

Tradition of ExcellenceThe Red Oak Independent School District

is highly respected for its 4-A rating and for its safe and secure setting, which gives both students and teachers the chance to grow in a supportive environment. More than 5,100 students are enrolled in the system, which includes Red Oak High, Red Oak Junior High, Red Oak Intermediate, and four elementary schools: D.T. Shields, Eastridge, H.A.Wooden, and Red Oak. Acorn Academy is the district’s special education facility. Offering a student-to-teacher ratio of 16-to-1 and proficiency scores of 92.2 percent for reading and 80 percent for math, the school has definitely earned a reputation for excellence.

The Red Oak School District’s mission, “Realizing Our Individual Student’s Dreams,” is achieved through a strong academic program, numerous opportunities to participate in sports and extracurricular activities, a very active PTA, and plenty of volunteer support.

The Red Oak Education FoundationEncouraging students to follow their

dreams is a recurring theme throughout the school system. The Red Oak Education Foundation was founded to provide teachers with the funds for innovative projects that aren’t covered in the school budget.

“We want students in Red Oak to get an education they wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else,” explains Pam Lynch, executive director of the Foundation. “We invite teachers with creative ideas to present their proposals through a grant process, and funds from the Foundation help them buy the supplies and equipment they need for their classrooms.”

Lynch notes that some of the grant proposals might be considered “fluff” or “not practical” if reviewed by the state, but the Education Foundation rewards teachers for thinking outside the box by helping them bring innovative teaching methods to the classroom. The Foundation started in 2002 and has been a great success. Students are stimulated by the imaginative programs, and teachers get a chance to express their creativity without feeling hampered by a lack of funds.

One of the first projects funded by the Foundation helped transform the classroom of a teacher working with special-needs students. Needing an effective method to teach the children basic life skills, the teacher applied for a grant to transform her room into a home-like environment. The classroom is now stocked with a refrigerator, stove, color-coded dishwasher, couch, tables, and so on. Students are taught how to make a grocery list, prepare a meal, store perishable foods after they’re prepared, load the dishwasher, put the dishes away, and clean up the kitchen.

The Foundation has also supplied the school with the TechnoJungle, which houses a treehouse loft with flatscreen TVs under it, educational video games, and software for pre-K students and gifted fourth grade students. Additional programs funded by the Foundation include a high-tech reading lab

at Eastridge Elementary, a steel drum band at Shields Elementary, a fully equipped science lab at Wooden Elementary, and a greenhouse for horticultural education at Acorn Academy. Other grants have funded art, theater, and music programs.

The Foundation is supported through private donations, an annual fundraising campaign, and generous gifts from community associations and businesses.

Growing to ServeAn ambitious construction plan for a new

high school is currently under way. The district has purchased a 121-acre tract of land for the site of the state-of-the-art building, and Superintendent Scott Niven says construction is expected to begin in 2008.

The new high school is part of a $95 billion bond approved by Red Oak voters in May 2007. A new elementary school to replace the current Shields Elementary facility is also planned.

Noted Red Oak ISD Alumni Athletes• Louise Ritter won the gold medal in the high

jump at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea.• Casey Fitzgerald is a North Texas University

wide receiver who finished the 2007 season ranked third in the NCAA for receptions per game and sixth in receiving yards per game. The 2004 graduate of Red Oak became a star player even after being warned he was too small and not fast enough for college football.

Hawk Eye News Keeps Community Informed

Hawk Eye News is a monthly news program produced by 16 student reporters from Red Oak High for the school network and Web site.

First introduced in 2002, the program has become a popular source for information on community events and school and sports news. Students participating in the program get an education in news-gathering, on-air communications skills, and the hard work involved in producing news programming and Web site content.

Local sponsors help defray costs, and numerous adults volunteer their time to help with equipment, fundraising, and special events.

Age Before Beauty? Mr. and Mrs. Red Oak

Mr. and Mrs. Red Oak is a tongue-in-cheek beauty pageant offering adult contestants from Red Oak schools a chance to compete and raise money to benefit the Project Success Drug Education Program.

In past pageants, teachers and counselors vying for the crown have stunned and amused students and community members with their outrageous costumes and flair for comedy. The huge turnout for the event ensures the drug education program can continue to educate young people and their parents about the dangers of drug use.

Red Oak’s Civil Air Patrol (CAP), one of only two such programs within school systems in Texas, engages students in three missions: aerospace education, emergency services, and cadet programs. The Patrol’s official mission states, “The mission of the Civil Air Patrol

cadet program is to serve America by developing our nation’s youth, accomplishing local, state, and national missions, and educating our citizens to ensure air and space supremacy.”

Jane Smalley, captain of the Red Oak Cadet Squadron, explains, “What it means is that we take the youth of our nation and work with them to develop the leaders of tomorrow.”

Cadets learn leadership from the ground up. Just as in the military, this means that, at first, they must learn to follow. “Cadets begin with what we call ‘followership,’ which basically means that a cadet must learn to follow if they ever expect to lead,” Smalley says. “They learn what it truly means to follow, not blindly, but with knowledge and trust in their leaders.”

Participants get intensive instruction in aerospace education, including everything from the basic dynamics of flight with paper airplanes to the physics of a space flight. Activities and train-ing sessions are numerous. Cadets attend Encampment, a week-long boot camp; Ground Search and Rescue, which teaches them to work as a team to find downed aircraft and save survivors; and communications school, where they get instruction on the CAP radio system and train to work on disaster missions.

Physical fitness is another requirement — and benefit — of the program. “Cadets in the program are required to be physically fit,” Smalley notes. “They must pass a rigorous physical training test to promote to each achievement. We work with cadets to help them pass these tests if they are struggling.”

Cadets who make it at least halfway through the program or to the Mitchell Award (Cadet Second Lieutenant) are eligible for many scholarships for school and flying. Cadets who make it to the highest award, the Spaatz Award (Cadet Colonel), have a slot at the Air Force Academy if they choose to take it. About 10 percent of all cadets at all the academies are made up of Civil Air Patrol cadets.

Successful completion of the program equips cadets with a multitude of skills. Smalley asserts, “When a cadet finishes the program they can not only use the skills they have learned in CAP in the military, but in business as well. They learn everything from how to teach a new person how to do drill and ceremonies [march] to how to plan and execute a week-long activity that has a defined budget, time, and facility constraints, and other variables that they need to work through to make it successful. In our Moral Leadership program, they learn problem-solving skills, how to work with a team, and how to deal with conflict and work through it.”

The Care and Share Grief Group, part of the Practical Parenting Education program at Red Oak ISD, is a support group for parents who have lost a child at any age. Leaders of the group include Leslie Jacob, a first grade teacher at Red Oak Elementary; Lori Walton, a paraprofessional who works with students in Structure of Intellect; and Cindy Dooly, a practical parenting leader and counselor at Red Oak Elementary.

Having shared the unequaled heartbreak of losing a child drew the group’s leaders to action. “Unfortunately, we have had many parents in the community who lost children in the last two years,” says Jacob. “The group just seemed to become a need, so we started it. We sent off about 10–12 personal invitations. We had seven parents there, including myself and Lori, that had lost a child. A few have lost more than one child.”

According to Jacob, the group began as a place where grieving parents could go to share their feelings. “It helps to know there are others having the same feelings, to know you are normal,” she notes. “We try to help members be aware of and deal with the stages of grief.”

The group solicits ideas from members on things they have done that helped them with the healing process. “It was very helpful to see one parent that was 12 years out in their grief and how they were dealing and still affected by it,” Jacob says.

Discussions among the group also help bereaved parents to realize that people deal with grief in different ways. But important to all members of the group is honoring the memories of their children. “We want to be able to know our children are making an impact on the world,” Jacob says. “We will be working on charitable projects in the community in our children’s names to honor them. For example, this year we donated a Christmas tree to the Festival of Trees, which benefits the Red Oak Education Foundation. The tree had stars decorated in memory of our children or other losses. We called it our Shining Stars Tree.”

Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie provides quality health care to Ellis County residents at its 69-bed, not-for-profit hospital. As the Ellis County area has continued to grow, the hospital

has expanded its staff to include more medical specialists. Specialties include eye, ear, nose, and throat; emergency medicine; pediatrics; gastroenterology; obstetrics/gynecology; family practice; general surgery; orthopedics; plastic surgery; podiatry; and pulmonology. Last year the emergency room was renovated to reduce wait times and enhance efficient patient care. The hospital also installed a new patient tracking system in the surgery waiting area. A new Web-based imaging technology, the Picture Archival System, gives doctors faster access to X-rays and other digital images.

For two years in a row Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie has received Leadership Awards for clinical excellence from VHA Inc. in the areas of surgical infection prevention and treatment of heart attack and congestive heart failure. The hospital also earned best-practice recognition for timeliness of administering procedures and for surgical procedures, including colon surgery, hysterectomies, and hip and knee anthroplasty. A Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Award presented by the TMG Health Quality Institute was also received in 2007. The award honors Texas hospitals that have improved their performance on specific national quality measures.

The Medical Center at Waxahachie was recently recognized at the first annual Baylor Health Care System Quality Improvement Summit for its success in creating a system to identify and treat patients at high risk for developing blood clots, which are among the leading causes of preventable death in hospitals. Baylor Waxahachie has adopted procedures so that all incoming patients are screened for their risk of developing clots. A screening form, included with every patient admission packet, helps determine a patient’s risk. Based on a patient’s history and risk scoring, physicians recommend appropriate preventive treatments, such as low-dose blood thinners or physical devices like compression stockings. Due to the success rate of the program, other hospitals in the Baylor Health Care System are adopting similar assessment tools for their patients.

Community education plays an important role in preventive care, and the Medical Center hosts a variety of events to educate adults about healthy lifestyles, diabetes management, stress control, weight management, and smoking cessation. “For Women For Life” offers women in Ellis County a chance to learn about the latest developments in health, wellness, beauty, and lifestyle through a series of educational programs presented by Baylor physicians and other health professionals. Six locations also offer free health screenings, assessments, and educational literature.

Gastric bypass surgery is now offered at Baylor Waxahachie to help those suffering from obesity, who are at risk for serious health issues such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and cancer. The weight-loss surgery is performed using a laparoscopic incision in the abdomen, and the after-care program includes nutrition and exercise counseling and a weight-loss surgery support group.

In 2006, Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie installed wireless technology throughout the hospital. Patients can connect to the Internet quickly and easily from their rooms, and visitors may conduct business from their laptops in the waiting room or while having a meal at the Parkview Café. Best of all, the internal wireless network allows employees and staff to transmit information from anywhere in the hospital, which dramatically speeds up access to laboratory test results and enhances communication between departments. The wireless technology also enables the hospital to implement mobile medical devices such as wireless intravenous pumps.

The Medical Center also has made a strong commitment to helping low-income families and the uninsured. Each year sizeable grants go to Hope Clinic, an outpatient health care clinic serving the uninsured in Ellis County. Staff physicians from Baylor Waxahachie see patients at the Hope Clinic free of charge. On the second Thursday of each month Baylor Waxahachie nurses work with local school nurses to provide vaccinations for school-age and preschool children. Flu vaccinations are also scheduled seasonally.

Red Oak Health and Rehabilitation Center has offered skilled nursing care as well as rehabilitation services

since 2002. The rehabilitation department offers

physical, occupational, and speech therapies for patients who need short-term treatment. For those who need ongoing care, the Center offers beautifully landscaped grounds with a courtyard and cabana, spacious rooms with windows, a dining room, beauty shop, and a community area with a fireplace. The specially designed Alzheimer’s unit provides a secure and caring environment for memory-impaired patients, and the hospice unit provides private and comfortable rooms for patients and visiting family members.

“Our skilled and caring staff members are trained to provide personalized care and treat residents with dignity and respect,” says Director Roy Miller.

Through rehabilitative therapy some patients are able to return home, where they can lead more independent lives, but for those who need long-term care, the Center offers a homelike environment that provides opportunities for residents to participate in activities and socialize with others.

“We have a full-time activities director, and many volunteers from the community commit their time to helping out with activities and special events throughout the year,” Miller says. “Some of our volunteers come in weekly and bring books and magazines or fruit. Their visits really give the residents’ spirits a lift. One of our regular volunteers recently got all dressed up and escorted some of the ladies to a ball. His being there has made a huge difference in the participation of our male patients.”

Loving Touch Adult Day Care

Loving Touch Adult Day Care offers a safe home environment for seniors from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Providing an alter-native to live-in care, the center offers lunch and dinner and a wide variety of activities, including movies, creative arts, outdoor games, nature walks, bingo, low-impact fitness exercises, and crosswords.

“Our day care program is a place where adults can enjoy social activities and group inter-action away from their families,” says Program Director Joeann Tyler. “Many of our participants come in four or five times a week, but we do take drop-ins. It is a safe alternative when caregivers need a break from providing constant in-home care.”

Loving Touch can also assist with everyday health needs. “Medications prescribed by a doctor are administered by a registered nurse,” Tyler notes. “We have an LVN on staff, and we honor special dietary needs.”

The center provides beds as needed, has handicap-equipped bathrooms, and fea-tures a fenced sitting area outside. “We make sure we have enough caregivers to provide personalized attention,” Tyler emphasizes.

Dallas for doctor-ordered tests. Outpatient services include digital mammography, EKG, CT scans, ultrasound testing, bone density tests, MRI, and routine radiology and blood work.

The Center at Red Oak was the first in Ellis County to offer digital mammography. Unlike

traditional mammograms, the digital test uses an enhanced high-resolution image of the breast, which allows radiologists to adjust contrast and brightness or zoom in for a closer look at suspicious areas. Images are ready in seconds, which eliminates the waiting time involved with traditional film mammography.

Lions Club“Our motto is ‘We Serve,’ and that’s exactly

what we try to do in every way we can to help the community,” says Pete Anderson, president of the Red Oak Lions Club.

The Lions Club is nationally famous for its work to help the vision-impaired. The group provides needed eyeglasses to those who can’t afford them. The Red Oak club frequently works on projects with other national and state nonprofit organizations, such as the Leader Dog program, which helps provide seeing-eye dogs for the blind. Preserving healthy eyesight is also a priority for the Lions. “We work with the Sight and Tissue Foundation and sponsor a local mobile eye clinic that travels around the Metroplex providing free eye exams for people in the community and for school children,” Anderson notes.

Kids are among those most helped by the Lions. Locally the group helps raise funds for the Red Oak Education Foundation through chili suppers, spaghetti dinners, and its popular pancake breakfasts. The club sponsors a Student of the Month program, honoring a student from a different school each month with a plaque and savings bond.

One of the programs that brings the Red Oak group the most pride is their sponsorship of the Lions Camp in Kerville, Texas. The camp offers children with physical disabilities, Type 1 diabetes, and hearing/vision impairments a chance to spend a complimentary week in the scenic Texas Hill Country, socializing with other kids and learning from specially trained camp counselors how to cope with their conditions by adopting a “Can Do” attitude.

Frequently the Red Oak Lions Club works to match the donations of generous givers with the needs of worthy recipients. Recently a local woman donated the electric wheelchair that belonged to her deceased husband, in hopes the club might find someone in need who could use it. The club donated it to a local physically challenged student who is grateful to have a more comfortable and convenient means of getting around and who can now participate in more extracurricular activities. “It worked out great for everyone,” says Anderson. “We helped a generous woman find a worthy recipient for the wheelchair, and the boy was thrilled.”

The Lions Club is also proud to support and participate in the programs of the Red Oak Chamber of Commerce.

North Ellis County OutreachNorth Ellis County Outreach is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to provide

low-income families in the area with food, clothes, rent, and utilities. The center also pays for prescriptions and medicines as needed.

Pennies From Heaven, the group’s local thrift shop, accepts donations of furniture, kitchen equipment, clothing, and other household items, which are then sold to the public. According to Executive Director Denise Butler, families who meet federal poverty guidelines can obtain any items they need from the shop at no charge. Proceeds from the thrift shop’s sales go into the assistance fund and help pay for operating expenses and events such as holiday meals.

Additionally, the group sponsors annual fundraisers. “Our annual Christmas card program, which allows family members to honor loved ones who have passed away, is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year,” explains Butler. “We receive generous support from organizations and residents of the community through a variety of events, and that enables us to help more people.”

Butler emphasizes that all monetary donations go toward helping needy families. “We also help senior citizens with light home repairs, and we have a food pantry to assist those who need help with groceries.”

meals on WheelsEvery weekday, across the country, thousands of seniors and disabled people receive

comfort and companionship when local volunteers stop by their house with a nourishing meal and a friendly hello. Meals on Wheels delivers prepared meals Monday through

Friday at lunch time to residents who find it difficult to leave their homes. Four routes serve the greater Red Oak area, and according to Amy Jackson, approximately

50 lunches per day are delivered by volunteers from the community. “Volunteers deliver meals when they can, whether it be daily, weekly, or a few times a month,” says Jackson. “For volunteers, the reward comes not only from serving meals, but providing a friendly smile and a few minutes of conversation with recipients who often feel isolated and lonely.”

The countywide organization frequently participates with other nonprofit organizations in the area to help organize the preparation and delivery of holiday meals. Funding comes from donations by civic groups, individuals, businesses, the United Way, private foundations, and federal and state grants.

Reindeer Manor: Caring Through Scaring For more than 30 years, during Halloween season, Reindeer

Manor has delighted area residents as a haunted house attraction that combines mazes, special effects, scary rooms, and interaction with costumed monsters.

The haunted house is operated, decorated, maintained, and staffed by Boy Scouts Troop #1. According to Troop Leader Richard Kinney, proceeds from Reindeer Manor fund the scouts’ budget for the following year, with some left-over money going toward a special account to help pay for uniforms and trips. “This account paid for my uniforms and trips when I was a scout,” Kinney notes. “So I know how much it means to the boys.” The remainder of the cash is split between the scouts per hours served at the Manor.

In addition to tours of the spooky main house, which boasts themed rooms haunted by costumed actors, Reindeer Manor features an outdoor midway that offers a chance to play games and win prizes. For those who crave even more excitement, a haunted trail is full of more goblins waiting to jump out and startle anyone passing by. The journey to reach the house is an adventure in itself, with a spooky drive down dark and winding rural roads. The permanent location, sporting a 20-foot gate decorated with gargoyles and fire lanterns, is used off-season for Boy Scout outings.

Running the Manor is a great experience for the scouts, Kinney asserts, as it not only teaches them work habits and responsibility, but also gives them a chance to give back to the community.

“We hold an annual blood drive at the house and collect donations for two food banks during the holiday season,” Kinney notes. “Additionally, local organizations who run booths in the midway get to keep 100 percent of their profits.”

Reindeer Manor is located at 410 Houston School Road, off I-35, approximately five miles south of I-20 on Bear Creek Road. Call 918-218-RATS or visit www.reindeermanor.com for directions and information, including a spooky haunted history of the house and grounds — which locals claim has its share of genuine ghosts, as well as playful scouts!

Special of the Day, Every Day: BarbecueVisitors to Red Oak will find several restaurants serving up hearty

portions along with Texas hospitality. Not surprisingly, three of the most popular spots to eat serve Southern-style barbecue. All three offer a down-home atmosphere and heaping helpings of ribs, chopped brisket, hot links, and mouthwatering sides like cole slaw, mashed potatoes, and biscuits.

Randy’s BBQ, located at Highway 342 and FM 2377, offers daily lunch specials as well as a full dinner and catering menu featuring hickory-smoked barbecue, burgers, sandwiches, and specialty desserts like pecan cobbler, banana pudding, and strawberry shortcake.

Junior’s BBQ, with a motto of service, quality, and quantity, is the oldest restaurant in the city and a favorite of locals, police, and firefighters. In fact, the owner is so revered by the firemen he was invited to their banquet and presented with a plaque in appreciation for his generosity and kindness to the firefighters.

Community spirit is also evident at Bubba Que BBQ. Each Tuesday the restaurant holds Spirit Night, and 10 percent of each customer’s check is donated to a local school. Recent donations helped fund an art program, field trips, and equipment for the steel drum band at Shields Elementary.

Shoppin’ AroundRed Oak offers a variety of specialty shops in the Main Street

Plaza, located amidst the historic downtown renaissance, as well as in strip centers like Red Oak Square and Red Oak Corners.

A new Wal-Mart is expected to open in 2009.In March 2008, the Uptown Village at Cedar Hill debuted

with an open-air shopping environment including Dillard’s, Barnes and Noble, and a variety of apparel and accessories retailers. Cedar Hill is a short drive from Red Oak off Highway 67 at FM 1382 and Pleasant Run.

Possum Trot Trail System so that residents and visitors will have more opportunities for enjoying hiking and biking.

Currently locals enjoy Cherry Creek Nature Preserve, Liberty Garden, and Old Town Park, where numerous community events take place throughout the year.

“One of our primary goals is to develop more parks,” says Mayor Alan Hugley. “We have purchased a 70-acre tract of land east of the city that will become our signature park. It has a creek that will be surrounded with trails, recreational areas, and ball fields.”

Youth SportsAttending Hawks sports events is a

popular activity in Red Oak. The beloved Red Oak Hawks football team reached the regional playoffs in 2007 for the first time in 23 years. Local businesses keep team spirit strong with signs of support, and residents turn out at pep rallies and events to support all the Hawks sports teams. Teams frequently hold car washes, bake sales, and other events to raise funds for equipment and training.

More than 500 kids ages 6 to 19 participate on 40 co-ed soccer teams. The spring and fall leagues are run by volunteer coaches, referees and organizers.

Softball and baseball leagues for children and adults are also offered.

Located just 20 minutes from down-town Dallas with close proximity to I-35 and I-20, Red Oak is ideally

suited for those who prefer suburban living without having to endure lengthy commutes for employment. The area has experienced a residential housing boom in recent years, and first-time buyers or those looking to trade up will find a wide variety of houses to choose from. Whether you are seeking to build your dream home from the ground up or move into an older home, there are many afford-able neighborhoods. Those seeking a larger expanse of land will also find acreage with a more rural feel.

Although the city’s population is escalating rapidly, residents go out of their way to make newcomers feel welcome. “People often comment that Red Oak doesn’t feel like other towns they’ve lived in,” says Mayor Alan Hugley. “It’s quickly evolving from rural to suburban, but even with all of the growth we have experienced in the last few years, it still has a friendly, small-town feel, and there is a sense of community here that is rare.”

According to the Home Builders Association of Greater Dallas, the Dallas Metroplex is ranked in the top half of the most affordable housing markets in the United States. “Our close proximity to Dallas and the availability of land is unique in this area,” Mayor Hugley notes. “While areas to the north of us now

have become so urban they have suburbs of other suburbs, Red Oak still has a lot of open, undeveloped land that can be used for both residential and business development.”

Buyers considering relocating to the Dallas-Fort Worth area will find that Red Oak offers a wide choice of affordable homes in several price ranges.

Nourishing Faith and Helping Others

The Red Oak area is home to more than a dozen churches representing a variety of denominations. Many of them frequently work together on community projects such as Habitat for Humanity or helping North Ellis County Outreach provide food, clothing, and other assistance to needy families throughout the region.

In addition to providing worship and fellowship, churches also offer additional help to residents, such as the First Baptist Church’s Celebrate Recovery Program. A faith-based healing approach, the program organizes groups to assist in overcoming substance abuse, eating disorders, codependency, anger/resentment, domestic violence, and other issues.

Angel Food Ministries provides high-quality, affordable food to low-income families struggling to make ends meet. Angel Food groceries feed a family of four for one week or a single senior citizen for one month. Boxes of food valued at $50 are sold for $25 through the program.

Other churches work to provide holiday gift baskets to families who otherwise would not be able to afford Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners or gifts for their children.

The Empowering Word Christian Center organizes a different project each month in cooperation with Ellis County Outreach. Church volunteers help out in a variety of ways, from building handicap ramps to cleaning yards or repairing homes. Highland Meadows Church also encourages its members to pursue charitable activities outside the church.

First United Methodist Church has a strong volunteer program for children in grades seven through 12 and places an emphasis on missions and community service throughout the year. The church features a pumpkin patch and carnival in October, with funds going to support worthy causes.

New residents and visitors will find that Red Oak churches offer a casual and friendly atmosphere, with many opportunities to make new friends and get involved in helping others.
